A right-handed wicketkeeper batsman, Zahid Ali was fortunate to be Mohammad Kaif's neighbour in Allahabad, where he was coached by the Indian batsman's brother. He also went to Lucknow Sports School, famous for being a breeding ground for several state-level cricketers. He scored 213 runs, and effected 20 dismissals in twelve Vinoo Mankad Trophy matches. He was named in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup squad for New Zealand as one of the wicketkeepers.
