Nigel Laughton was appointed on 01 September 1997 as the European Cricket Development Officer.
After school, Nigel spent a year teaching at Melbourne Grammar School before returning to UK to embark upon Army Officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was subsequently commissioned into The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in 1986. During 9 years service he was stationed variously in England, Scotland, Germany and Norway, served with both the American and French Allied Forces, and was sent on three operational tours to Northern Ireland. Between 1990 and 1994 Nigel was attached to the Army Air Corps as a helicopter pilot but he was involved in a serious helicopter crash which, following major back surgery, subsequently led to his retirement in 1994. In September of the same year he gained entry to Oxford University to read Geography as an undergraduate.
Nigel represented Sussex Schools, the Army, and Oxford University at cricket and is also a qualified cricket coach (ECB Staff Coach). Prior to his accident, he played representative rugby and tennis and was an accomplished long-distance runner and squash player. He is a qualified tennis coach with the USPTR, holds a pilot licence and enjoys scuba diving, sketching and walking.
In April 1999, Nigel married Sarah and together they live in West London, 10 minutes from Lord's Cricket Ground where he works.
