A young quick bowler, Saffell has followed the career path of Tom Lungley from Ockbrook and Borrowash onto the books at Derbyshire. He made just one first-class appearance for the county in 2007 against Cambridge at Fenner's where he helped Freddie Klokker score a hundred in an unbroken tenth-wicket partnership of 70, where he scored 35 not out. He also picked up five wickets in the match.
