A slow left-armer, Major Tristan Ballance was a talented schoolboy cricketer at Uppingham and also with Norfolk, and in 1934 was one of the leading school bowlers of the summer with 53 wickets at 11. At Oxford he took 6 for 41 in the Freshman's match and was drafted into the XI, winning his Blue in 1935 and 1937. He only played three times in 1936 but enjoyed a good season for Norfolk, and he also batted well for them, with a best of 107 in 1938. He was a master at Brighton College at the outbreak of war.
