Claude Tozer was a precocious schoolboy cricketer who established records in Sydney school and grade cricket and who would have played much more first-class cricket were it not for the demands of medical school. He did make a handful of appearances in second-string New South Wales games before the war, but went to serve with the Royal Australian Medical Corp at Gallipoli and then on the Western Front during WW1, ending up as a major and winning the DSO. He returned home to join become a GP, and began to make his mark. He started the 1920-21 season with 452 runs in three appearances in grade cricket and was picked for an Australian XI against the touring MCC in December, making fifties in both innings. As a result, he was named as NSW captain for their game against Queensland starting on New Year's Day, but on December 21, 1920 he was shot and killed by his deranged mistress.
