The exact date of death has never been confirmed or his body recovered, however the accepted date of death is 7 February 1951 aged 51 years. He was skipper of the yacht the Argos competing in the Wellington to Lyttelton Yacht Race which claimed 10 lives (the second worst after Fastnet). His death could have been any time after 24 January although weak radio signals were received from the yacht on 3rd February. The search was called off on 12 February.
