New Zealand fast bowler Doug Bracewell has replaced the injured allrounder Andrew Ellis in the squad for the Champions Trophy, the ICC has confirmed.* Ellis was ruled out last week due to a broken rib.

Ellis, 31, was injured in Christchurch, while training for the three-match ODI series in England and the Champions Trophy. Bracewell is also making a comeback after missing the Test series at home against England earlier this year. Currently in England with the Test side, he failed to make the XI for the Lord's Test that concluded on Sunday.

The ODI players will leave for the UK on May 21. They have two warm-up matches in Northampton, and play their first game of the tournament on June 9, against Sri Lanka in Cardiff.

With Southee, Boult, Mills, and McClenneghan all in the squad, not sure Bracewell's ODI record will warrant a place in the team. Not exactly like-for-like, but there's still plenty of allrounders in the squad, so a good move to include another seamer.

That's probably very hard news for Ellis, who I can imagine was seeing this as the critical series in his career. I hope the selectors consider Matt Henry who I think was the bowler of the summer in domestic odi cricket and is young and takes lots of wickets.

Bracewell is not a good allrounder. But may be a good bowler on his day. So,he can't replace an allrounder. But if a frontline bowler get injured,he can be in playing XI.

so if kane williamson develops his batting more and sumhow takes 5 wickets in an innings would u consider him a batting allrounder. Classy one for nz that would be

so? just a mediocre all-rounder. There are very few proper all-rounders in World Cricket today. The rest are just batting or bowling all-rounders and hardly any genuine all-rounder.

Bracewell is like for like replacement in the ct squad.

Its sad to say but we are probably better off without him, he doesn't really offer much at all with bat or ball, don't know how he keeps getting picked

colin munros already in the squad haha

Ellis is a mediocre player at best; no loss. Makes room for a new face: Latham, perhaps? They could even throw in Bracewell, if only to scare the Aussies into withdrawal.

YESSSSS! Great News, this won't weaken the side at all. They should take Colin De Grandhomme

This is a blessing in disguise, if they want to replace an allrounder with an allrounder then they should pick corey anderson, who should have been there before ellis anyway.

@Nakul Sahdev...a like for like replacement of a medium pace slogger who is not international class. I think NZ may cope without him.

  • on May 15, 2013, 20:47 GMT

    doug bracewell or tom latham
