Injured Welegedara doubtful for Champions Trophy

23

Chanaka Welegedara is in doubt for the Champions Trophy after sustaining a foot injury during Rest of Sri Lanka's List A match against Sri Lanka A on Friday. Welegedara bowled only 2.4 overs, before leaving the field with pain in his right foot and ankle. Sri Lanka leave for England on May 26, and are scheduled to play their first warm-up match on May 30 against Pakistan.

"Welegedara came off immediately and is currently unable to put any weight on his right foot," a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) release said. "He is getting scans over the weekend and will have the results by Monday. He will not take part in the final of the SLC President's trophy, to be played on Monday."

Welegedara, 32, had been the leader of Sri Lanka's Test-match pace attack, but has been plagued by injury in the last 12 months, in which he only completed one Test match. He strained his groin playing England in March last year, before tearing a shoulder muscle before the Pakistan series in July. He recovered in time to travel to Australia at year's end, but tore a hamstring early in the second Test in Melbourne, and has not played any international cricket since. Largely regarded a Test specialist, Welegedara had not played limited-overs international cricket since June 2010.

He is one of four specialist fast bowlers named in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy, with Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Kulasekara also picked. Farveez Maharoof, who is not in the national squad but may have been a potential replacement, was also injured during the match and will likely be unavailable for two weeks.

great news! welegedera always gets injured so he is no use. maharoof would have definitely been the first choice of replacing welegedera, but now that he's injured as well they should bring in seamer who can bat like damika prasad, isuru udana or kaushalya weeraratne. or they should give a youngster a chance, like chaturanga kumara, chatura pieris or this vimukthi perera everyne's talking about

3 fleet-footed seniors together with the wounded-soldier like spinner and Welagedara have to be dropped in giving those places to future players (Kaushal silva,AngeloPerera,ShehanJayasuriya,GayanManeshan,SachithraSerasinghe,ChathurangadeSilva,NDickwella,KusalMendis;MalindaPushpakumara,ChathuraPeris,CJayampathi,ChathurangaKumara,Tha'Khausal,Ajantha,Dulanjan,Ramesh Mendis). The youngsters have to be picked when their confidence at its peak. Some players have been picked for the things they've done in their previous births but not on the present form. The only truth is SL has hardly won single series with these over-hyped pros & other henchmen, since2007, but these henchmen are still indispensable for the J&Ps. The J&Ps have already ruined careers 2 of the best Sc'boy batters namely IanDaniels&BRajapaksha the leading batters in the YWC of 2000 &2010 respectively. Their performances immediately after leaving schools was exceptional compared to that of 3 senior pros.Stats Cric. Archives.

Wanted to leave a comment on "Lessons for the Sri Lanka Premier League" article but could not find anywhere... The proposed Caribbean league will eat SLPL alive...it will die down very soon due to lack of credibility in SLC. SL will bounce back between current mentality and Arjuna's mentality of leadership and governance of the game for the next few years until they realize that correct path is none of them!!!!!

Dear selectors ..please do not selected useless Dilhara Fernando and Suranga Lakmal...they have not done anything for SL...If need a fast bowler who has a batting skills....can select Dilhara Lokuhettige or Isuru Udana....they are much suited for England conditions and can be used as pinch hitters.....If need to add a batsman...he should be Angelo perera....

I am Pakistani fan and eager to see SL team strong in bowling, hope Chanak Welegedara will get well soon.

This V Perera bowler looks like a promising left arm fast medium bowler. He has really good bowling figures and good economy rates. It is out of V Perera of D Fernando for me. How fast does V Perera actually bowl?

I really hope they bring Dilhara Fernando into the squad. He is a much better pick than Welegedara, who's only strength is that he is a left arm fast medium bowler. Dilhara is a fast bowler who would be good in English conditions. He may not be as economical as Welegedara, but will definitely take more wickets. I hope they consider him...

It is important to have a left arm genuine pacemen in the side for early summer English conditions. All right arm attack may have issues with most sides have more right handed batsmen. It is high time that we find replacement for Welagedara who has not been in good physical shape over the past one year so. I remember when Vassy played so many years without getting injured too often if not at all. Now that he is the bowling coach it is his turn to unearth someone of his calibre.

All the best SL for Champions Trophy!

Between Angelo and Thisara they can only survive 15 overs... that's in a good day and if Sanga and Thirimanne play in the same game, they will bogged down for ages and compromise the run rate and added pressure batsmen following them. Too bad we have been relying on them (seniors and the reshuffling) forever instead of thinking outside the box and picking few good utility players. SLC is so incompetent and even if they have a magic crystal ball they would not know how to use it to gain any advantage. Unless the stars are aligned, SL won't make that far this time. Even if they do, they will crash at the final, like they always do.....so think of the Next big tournament and pick few exciting players, it's not that we don't have them. We always give preference to seniors.

Welagedara is a fantastic left armer for test cricket i placee like South Africa,Australia,NZ,Eng not in subcontinent for sure.I think now he lack fitness may be the age is catching up and he must be totally neglecting his fitness and drills and for me now another Dilhara Fernando.Everyone is talking on this page about Vimukthi Perera and I have never heard off.Looks like he should get the nod as all are talking about him.Better to nurture a yougster and also Sachithra Serasinghe lookd good on performance but do not know if he is a spinner or a paceman.
