Mascarenhas earns Hampshire victory despite Bailey's heroics

For the second time this season Hampshire easily crushed Derbyshire. At Derby they won by nine wickets. At the Rose Bowl the margin was ten wickets with a day to spare and it might have been even more emphatic but for a defiant tail organised around the experienced Rob Bailey.

Derbyshire began what proved to be the last day still needing 233 to make Hampshire bat again at 10 without loss overnight. By lunch there were at least signs of resistence at 80 for two though Chris Bassano was needlessly run out taking a quick single to Robin Smith at midwicket.

Defeat by a heavy margin became inevitable immediately after lunch when three wickets fell in eleven balls and at 128 for seven the end was in sight.

Only then did the seasoned Bailey begin to make some use of a benign wicket, frustrating Hampshire for three-and-a-quarter-hours in making 98, his best score of the summer. Alex Edwards shared in a stand of 81 for the eighth wicket and later Tim Munton struck five belligerent fours in his 23.

Bailey was last out going for the drive which would have brought him a deserved century but succeeding only in giving Dimitri Mascarenhas a low return catch. Bailey hit 13 fours and faced 178 balls and it was appropriate that Mascarenhas should claim his wicket.

Mascarenhas finished with figures of six for 60, the best of his career and it was accuracy which undid the middle order and polished off what was left at the end.

Hampshire were left with two to win and the winning hit was a six off Bailey's first ball by Derek Kenway.
