Mishra and Dinda set to be dropped

157

Three bowlers that featured in India's squad during the home ODIs series against England in January are likely to miss out on the Champions Trophy, to be played in England from June 5.

Legspinner Amit Mishra, one of the stars of the current season of the IPL, is set to be a casualty along with Bengal pace duo of Ashok Dinda and Shami Ahmed when the selectors name the squad in Mumbai on Saturday evening.

While fast bowler Umesh Yadav is certain to return to international cricket after breaking down with a lower back injury during the first Test against England last November, Vinay Kumar and Irfan Pathan are front-runners in what would be a five-man pace bowling attack.

With the conditions in England not favouring spin, Mishra, who was the reserve spinner for the England ODIs, is likely to miss the cut with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja available. While Vinay has been ignored by the national selectors since the last year's Asia Cup in March, Irfan broke down after returning from India's limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka in July-August last year.

This would mean that in the absence of Zaheer Khan, who hasn't recovered from side strain, India would be able to field the seam attack of Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Vinay and Pathan being the back-up bowlers. Both Vinay and Irfan have had an impressive IPL campaign so far, and one of them will lose out on a plane to England only if the selectors decide to stick with Ahmed. Dinda, having had a horrendous run with the ball for Pune Warriors, especially in the death overs, is all but certain to be axed from the 15-member squad.

In the batting unit, the only major change is likely to be Shikhar Dhawan replacing Cheteshwar Pujara. Having recovered from the fracture that he suffered during his memorable Test debut, Dhawan is all set for another stint in the shorter version. Dhawan, who last featured in an ODI almost two years ago, hasn't done much of note during his five ODI appearances.

Despite being under pressure to retain their places in the squad, opener Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh are likely to return their places in the squad.

I believe batting for india is more or less covered because most of these people are proven one day players and no exceptional player knocking the doors except for a raydu perhaps.... but it is the bowling which can be the nemesis as apart from bhuvneshwar kumar i really dont see any one even in acceptable international form(most of ipl wickets are batsmans gifts rather than bowlers hard work)...India desperately needs a fast bowling alrounder or need to make jadeja as the main lead spinner in odis so to play 4 fast bowlers becoz in england and australian conditions(for the next wcup) part time spinners are not really gonna do the job which was indias strength in india recentely....

AMIT MISHRA is much more talented and wicket taking bowler than Ashwin, Irfan, Vinay Kumar and has recently hit double hundred in first-class cricket, can be usefull with the bat too... Its unfortunate that even having such a good IPL this season 2013 and in 2012 and being consistent domestic season doesnt get AMIT MISHRA selected even as a reserve spinner. Hope the selectors take an informed decision and pick AMIT MISHRA in the 15.

Irfan & Bhuvi are key players for IND in English conditions.. If Irfan bowls good, with his batting abilities he would be the best bet for allrounder at no.7.. I rather throw dice by dropping Jadeja and bring in leg-spinner Mishra. He could be more effective than Ashwin & Jadeja... Also I would go with Sehwag ahead of Gambhir provided you already have left handed opener Dhawan and I would retain Pujara & drop Rohit as we need some one to anchor innings in the tough bowling conditions..

Gambhir and Youvi are out of form in all sorts. Gambhir's technique is horrendous with his inability to have playing short balls, too much shuffling in front of wicket.Vinay has very good bowling techniques in death overs. he would be very handy on English conditions, he is also handy in batting. he has a good cricketing brain in terms of assessing the batsman. he has got 16 bowler wickets out of 18 he has got, 2 might be gifted ones.but overall, Dhawan, Pujara,Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja,Vinay, Ashwin, Ishant,Bhuvi, Irfan, Umesh are good 12 member team.

..continuing from my prev post..Bowling is relatively straight forward. Third seamer only needs to be selected to support Bhuvi, Unmesh and Ashwin- most likely it would ishant/ vinay kumar/irfan. either ways it doesnt make any difference. in foreign conditions its is a damage limitation attack at best. My ideal team thus would be vijay, dhawan, kohli, rohit, yuvi, dhoni, jadeja, ashwin, bhuvi, unmesh , vinay/ishant/irfan.

Tricky to select the Indian team because of poor form of players/ swinging conditions. A solid start without loosing many wickets would be most crucial in deciding the fate of the match. So we need a good set of openers most of all. But at the moment we dont have a settled pair. Gambhir has been in poor form for two years now and his fishing outside the offstump will doom him. Not convinced about Murali Vijay's off stump play against the swinging ball as well. Dhawan would be full of confidence but making is a newbie. Probably he and vijay should be given a chance over Gambhir who is clearly short of confidence. Pujara is injured so out which means kohli at 3. Below that again tricky- yuvaraj is out of form, raina will be sorted out by bouncers so a no-no, tiwari again out of form. Rahane has been a big disappointment in whatever chances he has got- seems to be frozen almost with fear. I think kohli, rohit and yuvi shud be the middle order and then hope that they fire.

  • DINESHCC on May 4, 2013, 7:37 GMT

If players like Vinay Kumar, Dinesh Kaarthik, Rohit Sharma, Amit Mishra, R.P.Singh etc. are picked based on the IPL performances, then 8th place is guaranteed for India in CT.

  • MAYURESHmagic on May 4, 2013, 7:29 GMT

Mohit sharma doing well in IPL, takes wickets of international players. He might be handy in champions trophy.

  • GRVJPR on May 4, 2013, 7:28 GMT

People are commenting as if Indian bowling is useless. If that is how it is, how come Indian is at top of ICC ODI ranking for last 8 months??

  • niroopbhat on May 4, 2013, 7:26 GMT

I see a lot of slack on Vinay Kumar. He has definitely increased his pace than his early days and has consistently bowled in the 135+ range in the recent past. The IPL requires him to bowl slower balls at the death(where he is proved invaluable for Bangalore this IPL). His List A stats in batsmen friendly Indian pitches are not bad - 82 matches, 123 wickets at an avg of 26 and an eco of 4.8. And he has some much needed international experience which is currently lacking in the pace attack having played more than 20 matches (and having picked up 28 wickets at an avg of 33). And more than anything he is a hard working team man. So please get your facts right before you dismiss someone...

No not Gambhir and yuvraj again . Vinay kumar in no where as near as good as praveen is . I really don't want to see Gambhir getting another chance . His days are over . Y don't people select Pujara ?? he is a wonderful as to Indian Cricket . Yuvarj's should be replaced with Dinesh and gambhir with pujara . Even though this is an ODI team selectors must think about the future overseas tour where they will exposed to swing and pace like in the England . I can't think of yuvraj getting another chance to play in tests . My playing 11 :- 1. Dhawan , 2 .Pujara , 3. Kholi ,4. Rohit , 5. DK , 6. Dhoni , 7. Jaddu/Raina , 8. Ashwin , 9. Bhuvneshwar , 10. Umesh , 11.PK / Ishant . Mishra is old... we need to look forward and it would not be a bad idea to bring A.Mukund . He is a fine talent and needs to be given more opportunities and also considering he has played in england before /

    dhavan,gambhir,kohli,UV(Rohit),Raina,MSD,Jadeja,Ashwin,Irphan, Bhuvi, Ishant(PK)

    reserves: PK, Mishra, Pujara, Karthik

    - India need to have 1 reserve fast bowler, 1 pujara type batsman, 1 reserve hitter like karthik and good spinner like mishra

    - it never b a problem if india includes mishra in eleven.

    - Irphan, PK, Ashwin, Bhuvi(proved batsman in domestic cricket) can bat

  • on May 4, 2013, 5:48 GMT

Who made this likely list of selection. I mean why would you want Vinay Kumar; he is only good for domestic circuit. Its better 5 man pace attack consist of Ishant, Bhuvaneshwar, Umesh, Praveen Kumar & Irfan Pathan. And spinners Ashwin and Jadeja select themselves. I would not be bad idea to drop one paceman and select Ojha instead. And batting line up should consist of Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Raina, MSD, Yuvraj and last two slots is debatable but seeing current form Rohit and Dinesh Karthik should make the cut. I would drop Rahane from the squad as his technique is found wanting. Pujara needs to play in oversea conditions as India needs a rock in middle order in case of collapse. Remeber the wall Rahul Dravid. Opening Dhawan can be partnered with either Karthik or Rohit as both have opened earlier and have good technique against seam and swing.

The BCCI seems to have lost all sense these days! Why on earth do they keep sticking to ishant sharma? Praveen Kumar is a much better player in english conditions and he was the lone bright spot in that horror tour of 2011! When will these people learn? And though i agree with dhawan's inclusion, why do u want to drop pujara who himself is going through a purple patch? these decisions will hugely hamper india's chances at the tournament! supporters, brace yourself for another early exit!

  • GRVJPR on May 4, 2013, 5:25 GMT

Irfan pathan is getting his swing back and that is what needed in england. People think that in england the ball will swing automatically. It is not so. you need people who can swing it. Also much is made about pitches and that they will be too difficult. England pitches are very flat in ODI cricket and they don't even brake up to help spinners.

  • KiwiRocker- on May 4, 2013, 5:20 GMT

Indian selectors need to learn a lesson from their Pakistani counterparts. India is picking these tried, tested and failed players. Irfan Pathan has been around for more than a decade is is a mediocre bowler bowling at a friendly pace. His batting once considered useful is also nothing special anymore. Vinay Kumar against is one track bowler who has got nothing special to offer. Worse of all is Umesh who just runs hard and bowls same thing over and again. India need to pick a seasoned seam bowler like Parveen Kumar along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar as India is up against mighty fast bowling attacks of SA and Pak in their group. Amit Mishar is a fine bowler and Ashwin should be dropped to accomorate Mishara. It is an utter shame IPL is being used to judge performances but even so Mishra has done better than any other spiinner. Biggest face is India's batting. Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh along with Suresh Raina are sitting ducks on English wickets.India needs Pujara- A technically good batter!

At least everyone has agreed on Dhoni's captaincy and leadership. Could try sanju samson, atleast as a bench player. He is so young, talented and has got calm thinking

  • MAYURESHmagic on May 4, 2013, 4:57 GMT

Is that compulsary to have 15 man squad? India have to go with 16 man squad, keeping one extra bowler.

  • on May 4, 2013, 4:55 GMT

Dhoni is a futuristic leader. India could be a force to reckon with given the experience in batting & quality swing/fast bowlers in Bhuvi & Umesh. Lots of ODI match-winners in Dhoni, Raina, Yuvraj. Gambhir has big match player capability & is keen to return to the national squad. Rohit & Ishant have played at international level for almost 6 years now, need to covert potential in performance. High-time Ishnat rises to the role of the leader of our attack in pacy conditions. Dhawan has toiled hard. Kohli will again be the go-to batsman & will stamp his authority in all conditions. The 15 should be : Dhoni (C & WK), Kohli (VC), Gambhir, Dhawan, Yuvraj, Raina, Rohit, Sir R Jadeja, Irfan, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ishant, Umesh, Saha/Rayudu, Vinay/Praveen. Rayudu & Saha should be chosen over Karthik for age factor. Playing XI - Gambhir, Dhawan, Kohli, Yuvi, Dhoni, Raina, Sir RJ, Irfan/Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ishant & Umesh. Play Ashwin at Oval & Irfan at Cardiff & Edgbaston.

  • Romenevans on May 4, 2013, 4:42 GMT

Dindia is a good death over bowler, but his first spell will be a concern because he bowls way to short and he his hit the deck type of bowler, hence no swing. Mishra won't be effective in UK, so Mishra and Dinda for sure. Here is my team -

    1. Dhawan 2. M. Vijay 3. Kohli 4. Rohit Sharma 5. Yuvi 6. MSD 7. Jadeja 8. Irfan Pathan 9. Ashwin 10. Bhuvneshvar Kumar 11. Umesh Yadav

@symsun, perhaps u want dinesh kartik to captain our team presuming he replaces dhoni.

  • on May 4, 2013, 4:26 GMT

Shami Ahmed is a decent bowler. He should be given a second chance. Pujara seems to lack fitness. He still has a long way to go before he could be compared to Dravid. Dravid still looks much fitter than most current Indian players.

Pujara over Gambhir any day, far better technique, not the dabs and hesitant charges down the track that are Gambhir's trademarks., Pujara is also a better fielder, and a level-headed guy, unlike the ever-pouting GG who reacts to every dismissal with head-shaking and grimacing.

  • on May 4, 2013, 2:37 GMT

Am surprised that inform quality spinner Amit Mishra has been dropped. The wickets in England have traditionaly favoured quality spinners like Murlidharan, Warne and Ajmal, who do not need the pitch to assist them. Ashwin and Jadeja do not have the predigree to make quality spinners.

  • vagee on May 4, 2013, 2:31 GMT

Dhawan, Rahane, Kohli, Yuvi, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Praveen kumar, Bhuvi, Ishant, Dinesh Karthick, Ambati rayudu, Umesh Yadav and Irfan pathan

  • LovedFansofIndianCricket on May 4, 2013, 2:30 GMT

If Pujara is fit try him as opener with Dhawan. Omit GG for some time. He should tune up his batting skill and coolness in Ranaji. Looking condition in England India should include Buvi, Pravin as well as Irfan. U Yadav and Vinay Kumar are back up bowler and good death over specialists. Both uses yorkers and slow bowls very well. Also it is better to include Balaji or Munaf. For god sake don't include Rohit Sharma. If Manoj is fit include him if not include Mandeep Singh or other uncapped player. Kohli, Raina, Jadeja Ashwin are not ignorable candidate. Reserve Keeper it is the time to include Dinesh Karthik again in the team. Yuvraj needs some rest. So Selectors have good bunch of players this time. Best of luck Team India for last Champions Trophy:-)

  • RajeshNaik on May 4, 2013, 1:56 GMT

If Dinda is dropped then it would be very demoralising for him. He has come up the hard way and works very hard. But hope he takes it in his stride and works hard for a comeback. If Irfan is selected despite his regular poor performances (Asia cup, T20 WC, Srilanka one dayers) then it would be unfortunate. Only the swing factor may save him. But all know that if there is no swing he is very very mediocre. Shami came in because Vinay was injured. Now if Vinay is fit and gets selected, its only natural that Shami goes out. If Shami is kept in the team at the cost of Irfan, that would be great.

The selectors must select the squad from the world cup point of view. They should give chances to budding talents in domestic circuit and try to rebuild a perfect squad for 2015 WC.Indians must be prepared to handle the pace and bounce from Australian surfaces hence it's good to provide chance for the youngsters. Take a look on these guys 1.Harmeet Singh 2.Unmukt Chand 3.Parveez Rasool 4.Baba Aparajith 5.Sanju Samson 6.Ajit Chandila 7.K.L Rahul 8.Mohit Sharma 9.Sandeep Sharma 10.AR Vijay Shankar 11. • RajeshNaik on May 4, 2013, 1:17 GMT

The writer has got his facts wrong regarding Vinay Kumar's absence from national team. He was not ignored as the writer claims! After the Asia cup in March, Vinay was selected for the T20 WC in Sri Lanka, but was injured and Irfan got the chance. I have the quick comment man Abhishek Purohit to vouch for this. Then Vinay was again selected for the one day series against England, but again injury kept him out and Shami got the chance. Vinay has been a consistent performer and so far there has not been a situation where he had to be ignored by the selectors on the basis of performance. He may or may not get selected for Champions Trophy. But he was certainly not Ignored after Asai cup.

I would have wanted to add sehwag in this list because he could give some experience in top order, though he is not in form but he is the kind of person who can be dangerous on his day and in country like england, you could need some experience at top and help other players.

  • arup_g on May 3, 2013, 21:32 GMT

No complaints from me regarding the squad. It looks like the best possibility for English conditions. Rohit Sharma is a big maybe, but on current form you would select him but selectors have gone against him due to National form.

I cannot wait to see Kumar in the seaming conditions. He should be a revelation. Good to see Yadav back. We need someone with raw pace and he seems like the only one in India who has that. What happened to Varun Aaron?

My XI would be: Dhawan, Gambhir, Kohli, Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Ishant/Irfan, Yadav, Kumar

Looks balanced. 3 seamers with 2 spinners. Can play Irfan at 7 and drop Jadeja to play 4 seamers if needs be. Batting looks strong except perhaps Gambhir needs to get into form otherwise play Rahane instead.

  • gauravk on May 3, 2013, 21:26 GMT

With all the fuss around the selection of pace attack, why are we forgetting Praveen Kumar. He can prove to be a deadly bowler in English conditions with his swing bowling and his dibly-dobly speed. Why the selector have stopped considering him for the national duty. May be due to the problem with his temperament.

  • Nampally on May 3, 2013, 21:17 GMT

Dropping of Mishra & Dinda can be justified for ODI's in England. But dropping of Pujara is unjustified when India does not have batsmen with sound technique to face fast bowling. Pujara is one solid sheet anchor- either for Tests or ODI's- who can hold an unreliable Indian batting in England, together. Only justifiable cause could be his physical fitness after he cracked his thumb in last test series. If Pujara is still injured, Dhawan, Vijay, Kohli are likely to be the top 3 + 2 out of R.Sharma, M.Tiwary & Raina the next 2 batsmen. Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin + 3 seamers complete the XI. Ishant Sharma, B.Kumar & Yadev are likely to be the 3 seamers, if Fit. Reserve squad will have 1 WK + 2 seamers + 2 batsmen. These 5 are likely to be Saha (WK), Vinay Kumar, Mohit Sharma/I.Pathan (2 seamers), U.Chand & Mukund (2 batsmen). Personally if P.Kumar was in form he would have been a good choice. I would like to see Dhawan, Ashwin or Tiwary as vice captain. Kohli as V.C., will be a wrong choice.

  • viru-319-219 on May 3, 2013, 20:17 GMT

Batsmen should be picked based on their ability to play pace, bounce and swing. I would like to see the final XI with 6 batsmen 2 wkt keepers 1 spinners 1 allrounder and 5 pacers. We dont need Jaddu in england Yuvraj can do he job and Dhoni doesn't look beyond ashwin so no need of second spinner.

    My 15: Dhawan,Rohit,Kohli,Yuvraj,Gautam,Rahane,Dhoni,Karthik,Ashwin,Irfan,Bhuvi,Yadav,Ishant,Praveen,Sreesanth

I dont want to see Slow Pacer Vinay in the team and swinging conditions in england will best suit sreesanth and praveen kumar.

    Starting XI: 1)Karthik,2)Dhawan,3)Virat,4)Yuvraj,5)Rohit,6)Dhoni,7)Irfan,8)Ashwin,9)Bhuvi,10)Ishant,11)Umesh

Top order is capable of playing swing and bounce, middle order can make any bowling attack look ordinary. In bowling, Two quality swing bowlers irfan and bhuvi with two pacers ishant and yadav won't be easy to face along side Ashwin, he can bowl 6 different deliveries every over but all we need from him is to not bowl a loose delivery every over

  • janardhan1990 on May 3, 2013, 20:13 GMT

I feel Gambhir needs a break from cricket which will do his frustration and his game a world of good. its going to be the begining of english summer which is prety much cold and the conditions will be similar to the ones that we had during the 1999 world cup. Taking a note that a batsman like dravid with a proper technique had scored the highest runs then i feel rohit sharma will be a very good option. and going by the current form of the players swing bowlers like bhuvaneshwar kumar vinay kumar and irfan pathan must be picked.praveen kumar will also not be a bad option. my 15 players to england will be as follows Dhoni(captain).Virat,Raina,Rohit,Yuvraj.Shikhar Dhawan,Ravindra Jadeja,R Ashwin,Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.Umesh Yadav,Vinay Kumar,Ishanth sharma,Irfan pathan,Praveen Kumar,Amit Mishra

My Playing Eleven would be- Rohit,Dhawan.virat.yuvraj,Raina,Msd,Irfan,Ashwin,Bhuvi,Ishanth,Vinay

All the best Team India..!! Love you Always

  • on May 3, 2013, 19:53 GMT

Why is Pujara set to be dropped ? What wrong has he done ? Keep him there in place of Yuvraj or Gambhir. Yuvraj is having a really bad IPL and Gambhir isn't at ease while facing quality attack in English conditions. Pujara has proved his mettle in the subcontinent conditions and now is the time for him to go a level ahead and get his hold on foreign conditions as well. He can't get an opportunity better than this on a trip to England to have a look at the conditions there and get some exposure as well as some runs as India play tests againt England away next year. And as far as bowling is concerned I might just go for Shami Ahmed ahead of Vinay Kumar for his extra pace.

  • on May 3, 2013, 19:42 GMT

Guys Pujara is not fit and BCCI doesn't want him to risk ahead of SA serious. Considering the form of Dhawan and rohit, they should get the chance. Right now BCCI has few worries i.e Yuvi's worst form and GG's strugling top order innings. In Bowling department we are some what settled with BHUVI & ISHANTH opening the innings followed by Umesh and reserve bowling of Vinay/Shammi. Though the matches are playing in English condition we should expect three seemers and a spinner(ashwin) followed by jaddu who can bowl & bat. My best XI would be - Dhawan, Rohit/GG, Virat, Raina, Dhoni, Yuvi, Jaddu, Ashwin, Ummi, Ishanth & Bhuvi folled by Amit Misra, Vinay, Rahena & Dinesh/Manoj Twari. Since i have to consider the form of Yuvi & Manoj ( who spend most of his time sitting in pench ) it may the last chance.

After watching all the comments, most of the fans are talking about Cheteshvar Pujara. I think he is struggling with his fitness after last test against Aussies. That is why after half stage of IPL we havent seen him playing a single match yet. And selecters rightly doing safe approach about Cheteshvar Pujara not picking him for Champions Trophy as we need 100% fit Cheteshvar Pujara more for the mighty and tough SA tour after Champions Trophy. After Dravid, Laxman we may face problems against Stayn & Co on pacy SA wickets. I think its always better to give Pujara sufficient time to get fully fit for SA tour. Another comment I read about Playing Rohit Sharma at opening slot with Dhavan. I think we should leave it to Rohit only. What we are watching Rohit playing at 4 superbly. After getting leadership he is consistant also. But Offcorce we have witnessed to his 84 runs inning as opener on swinging Mohali track against Eng. So lets see what happens.

I do believe that Rohit should be given oppurtunity at the top of order along with Pujara. If Rohit fails again, then Dhawan/Rahane could be given oppurtunity. Also, i feel that Vinay has improved a lot and now he's a good slog overs bowler, which is a critical phase of any ODI game!

Vinay Kumar is a rubbish bowler...Give Ishwar Pandey/Shami Ahmed/Siddharth Kaul a chance. Gambhir should make it on his experience. I would not like to see Ravindra Jadeja in the final eleven, and rather have Irfan Pathan as bowling all rounder at no 7, followed by R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma for final eleven. Roshit Sharma should be in at top with Shikhar Dhawan. It should be make or break series for Yuvraj Singh. Ambati Rayudu should be a part of the squad too.

How can u drop PUJARA ?he will do a DRAVID job in the middle..unlike Rohit INCONSISTENT SHARMA who plays well only in IPL and has been given too many chances in ODI team already

  • on May 3, 2013, 18:02 GMT

No Gambhir please. Pujara or Rahane should be better choice as openers than Gambhir.

  • Haleos on May 3, 2013, 18:00 GMT

Unlucky pujara if he gets dropped. Gauti should go. Has been getting out to the same shot time n again his entire career. Does not understand simple logic of cost benefit. 1 run aginst his wicket. No brainer Thrre.

  • on May 3, 2013, 17:59 GMT

Pujara has to be in the team, he could open as well. Given the English conditions i would prefer him over Gambhir. Given we traditionally get thrashed in last 10 overs we need regular wickets and spin could be the difference against WI, SA, Pak. I would toss-up between Jadeja and Misra as per the confidence in batting and play Ashwin for 2 spinners + 3 pace attack. Playing 11 - Dhawan, Pujara, Kolhi, Dhoni, Karthik, Raina, Jadeja/Misra, Pathan, Ashwin, B. Kumar, Yadav Bench - Yuvi, Rohit, Mishra/Jadeja, Vinay What i fear would happen with certainty is Gambhir, Ishant would replace Pujara and Misra. Less likely though possible is Rahane in place of Karthik - that would be plain stupid though!

Selectors, Mishra can be very handy bowler against a team like WI and SA as they don't play spinners great. Mishra has the ability to decive the batsmen,.

Its really funny to see some of you want to see Rohit and Yuvi in place of gambhir and Raina, Well stat time ,since Jan 1 2012 Gambhir has scored 838 runs(23 matches,avg-36.43,SR 78.75),Raina has scored 818 runs(24 matches,avg-48.11,SR 89.49) Rohit has scored 255 runs( 16 matches avg-17.00 SR 72.23) Yuvi has scored 160 runs(8 matches,avg-20.00,SR 90.90) Forget about Gambhir and Raina, even selecting Yuvi and Rohit in place of Jadeja and Rahane will be injustice. Purely on the basis of recent performance playing XI should be- Gambhir,Dhawan,Kohli,Rahane,Raina,Dhoni,Jadeja/Yuvi,I Pathan,R.Ashwin,B.Kumar,I.Sharma

  • bipulkumar on May 3, 2013, 17:35 GMT

There is no reason to add one more spinner in Irfan Pathan.

  • anuajm on May 3, 2013, 17:29 GMT

It's going to be an interesting selection. It might be the last chance for Gambhir else we might see him getting dropped from the ODI team too. I would keep Shami Ahmed in the team, he bowled well in limited oppurtunities and probably would select Pathan ahead of Vinay Kumar. Dhawan looks in solid form so might sneak in but Pujara has to be there specially in the seaming English conditions. Better drop the 'talented' Rohit Sharma who'll eat up a place in the team. You cannot ignore Sir Jadeja!!

Are the selection panel from CSK or something... its unfortunate that even having such a good IPL this season and in 2012 and being consistent domestic season doesnt get AMIT MISHRA selected even as a reserve spinner.

Where as he is much more talented and wicket taking bowler than Ashwin, Irfan, Vinay Kumar and has recently hit double hundred in first-class cricket, can be usefull with the bat too...

I dont understand why the selectors do not do a honest selection rather than heeding to Dhoni's CSK recomendations... I hope the selectors take a brave decision to pick AMIT MISHRA up on the Basis of his talent and avoid lobbying... !!!!

  • Boris384 on May 3, 2013, 17:19 GMT

Dear Selectors, I kindly request you to drop Gambhir and open with Dhawan and Rahane for atleat next few series, if they get some 10-15 matches on trott they will prove how good they are and Same goes for Rohit Sharma give him a fix position at no 4, soon we will see results. Yuvraj is not good as a middle order batsmen at number 4 he can come at number 6. Also dont take bowlers like Vinay kumar, he is tried and tested, he is failure on the international circuit, by playing him dont make laugh of our country. My Squad Dhawan, Rahane, Kohli, Rohit, Raina, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Jadeja, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Shami, Umesh, Ishant, Irfan, Kartik.

  • AlbertPintoGussaHua on May 3, 2013, 17:18 GMT

Why are we so easily swayed by IPL form, a domestic T20 tournament, and start making ODI selections based on that for a tournament to be played overseas?

  • siddhartha87 on May 3, 2013, 17:12 GMT

No Vinay Kumar please.Shami Ahmed is a better option than him.Gambhir is doing okay in limited overs while Rohit Sharma was really horrible past year. MY XI:1.Gambhir 2.Dhawan 3 .Kohli 4.Rahane 5.Raina 6.Dhoni 7.Jadeja 8.Pathan 9.Ashwin 10.B.Kumar 11. I.Sharma

    Reserves- Yadav,Yuvraj,S.Ahemd,R.Sharma

  • Fan1969 on May 3, 2013, 17:11 GMT

India does not have good death bowlers. This is a rude fact as Bhuvi, Praveen, Irfan want to finish early. Umesh, Ishant and Vinay bowl enough length balls to go for sixes. The big WI boys and AB (SA) can take atleast 1 six in every over if not 2 per over. Pak has enough hitters although they have thankfully left out Afridi.

India's only chance to win games against tough opposition like WI, SA and Pakistan is to have wicket taking bowlers. Amit Mishra can give a few wickets against WI who are average players of spin. We need Praveen/Bhuvi/Irfan to take wickets against Pak/SA in first 20 overs.

Ashwin and Sir Jadeja are unlikely to get many wickets in English conditions with the ball not spinning much.

India needs an X factor and thus must take Mishra/Praveen to get wickets.

If the opposition has lost 3 or less by over 35, India will lose. We can leak 120 runs or more in last 15 overs.

Despite Sir's brilliance in India, Yuvi is a big match player and should play ahead of Sir.

  • on May 3, 2013, 17:07 GMT

It might be fair to drop Mishra since conditions in England are not likely to support spinners, but not fair at all to drop Pujara, only because Dhawan played at a better strike rate in a test match. If IPL performances are a parameter, why was Dhawan not selected last year when he scored 569 runs... Pujara has showed he can score quickly.

  • SamRoy on May 3, 2013, 16:44 GMT

And btw when will Dhoni stop his partiality to Amit Mishra. Granted Mishra never was good enough in test cricket but he never got enough chances to prove himself in ODI cricket. In one-dayers leggies are the real wicket takers, not off-spinners.

  • on May 3, 2013, 16:35 GMT

Mishra has to be selected ahead of Ashwin. Mishra is a strike bowler who is much needed and more than useful bat as well. It is depressing to see the names of Pathan and Vinay Kumar coming up again. They are both useless. Instead pick PK and Gony

Please, please PLEASE! No Gautam Gambhir. This guy has shown he is no longer good enough to bat in international matches unless it's a flat track. His terrible running and tendency to give his wicket away are his problems. Let him stay as an IPL star, while players who actually WANT to play international cricket are given the chance to perform, like Dhawan.

  • on May 3, 2013, 16:26 GMT

Eventhough Sehwag has been out of form off late,it would not be a bad idea to bring him back into the opening in Champions Trophy just to that have that X factor that India need against teams like Pakistan,SouthAfrica

  • z0mbiezom on May 3, 2013, 16:23 GMT

Whilst IPL form is important, I really hope the selectors don't see t20 cricket as the sole determinant for 50 over form. Players like Pujara, Gambhir, Rahane, in particular, are far better at 50 over game than 20 over game and are important cogs in the side in terms of anchoring an innings. Similarly bowlers like Shami would be much more effective bowling 10 overs, than in a short 4 over spell, mostly in the powerplay and at the death.
