Mishra and Dinda set to be dropped

157

Three bowlers that featured in India's squad during the home ODIs series against England in January are likely to miss out on the Champions Trophy, to be played in England from June 5.

Legspinner Amit Mishra, one of the stars of the current season of the IPL, is set to be a casualty along with Bengal pace duo of Ashok Dinda and Shami Ahmed when the selectors name the squad in Mumbai on Saturday evening.

While fast bowler Umesh Yadav is certain to return to international cricket after breaking down with a lower back injury during the first Test against England last November, Vinay Kumar and Irfan Pathan are front-runners in what would be a five-man pace bowling attack.

With the conditions in England not favouring spin, Mishra, who was the reserve spinner for the England ODIs, is likely to miss the cut with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja available. While Vinay has been ignored by the national selectors since the last year's Asia Cup in March, Irfan broke down after returning from India's limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka in July-August last year.

This would mean that in the absence of Zaheer Khan, who hasn't recovered from side strain, India would be able to field the seam attack of Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Vinay and Pathan being the back-up bowlers. Both Vinay and Irfan have had an impressive IPL campaign so far, and one of them will lose out on a plane to England only if the selectors decide to stick with Ahmed. Dinda, having had a horrendous run with the ball for Pune Warriors, especially in the death overs, is all but certain to be axed from the 15-member squad.

In the batting unit, the only major change is likely to be Shikhar Dhawan replacing Cheteshwar Pujara. Having recovered from the fracture that he suffered during his memorable Test debut, Dhawan is all set for another stint in the shorter version. Dhawan, who last featured in an ODI almost two years ago, hasn't done much of note during his five ODI appearances.

Despite being under pressure to retain their places in the squad, opener Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh are likely to return their places in the squad.

AMIT MISHRA is much more talented and wicket taking bowler than Ashwin, Irfan, Vinay Kumar and has recently hit double hundred in first-class cricket, can be usefull with the bat too... Its unfortunate that even having such a good IPL this season 2013 and in 2012 and being consistent domestic season doesnt get AMIT MISHRA selected even as a reserve spinner. Hope the selectors take an informed decision and pick AMIT MISHRA in the 15.

Team Announced: Vijay, Dhawan, Dhoni, Virat, Raina, Bhuvi, Ishant, Umesh, Vinay, Dinesh Karthik, Jadeja, Ashwin, Irfan, Rohit, Mishra.

Irfan & Bhuvi are key players for IND in English conditions.. If Irfan bowls good, with his batting abilities he would be the best bet for allrounder at no.7.. I rather throw dice by dropping Jadeja and bring in leg-spinner Mishra. He could be more effective than Ashwin & Jadeja... Also I would go with Sehwag ahead of Gambhir provided you already have left handed opener Dhawan and I would retain Pujara & drop Rohit as we need some one to anchor innings in the tough bowling conditions..

Gambhir and Youvi are out of form in all sorts. Gambhir's technique is horrendous with his inability to have playing short balls, too much shuffling in front of wicket.Vinay has very good bowling techniques in death overs. he would be very handy on English conditions, he is also handy in batting. he has a good cricketing brain in terms of assessing the batsman. he has got 16 bowler wickets out of 18 he has got, 2 might be gifted ones.but overall, Dhawan, Pujara,Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja,Vinay, Ashwin, Ishant,Bhuvi, Irfan, Umesh are good 12 member team.

..continuing from my prev post..Bowling is relatively straight forward. Third seamer only needs to be selected to support Bhuvi, Unmesh and Ashwin- most likely it would ishant/ vinay kumar/irfan. either ways it doesnt make any difference. in foreign conditions its is a damage limitation attack at best. My ideal team thus would be vijay, dhawan, kohli, rohit, yuvi, dhoni, jadeja, ashwin, bhuvi, unmesh , vinay/ishant/irfan.

Tricky to select the Indian team because of poor form of players/ swinging conditions. A solid start without loosing many wickets would be most crucial in deciding the fate of the match. So we need a good set of openers most of all. But at the moment we dont have a settled pair. Gambhir has been in poor form for two years now and his fishing outside the offstump will doom him. Not convinced about Murali Vijay's off stump play against the swinging ball as well. Dhawan would be full of confidence but making is a newbie. Probably he and vijay should be given a chance over Gambhir who is clearly short of confidence. Pujara is injured so out which means kohli at 3. Below that again tricky- yuvaraj is out of form, raina will be sorted out by bouncers so a no-no, tiwari again out of form. Rahane has been a big disappointment in whatever chances he has got- seems to be frozen almost with fear. I think kohli, rohit and yuvi shud be the middle order and then hope that they fire.
