India squad for the Champions Trophy

  • MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik (wk), M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Vinay Kumar
  • In: Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, M Vijay, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar
  • Out: Ashok Dinda, Gautam Gambhir, Shami Ahmed, Yuvraj Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane

Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh have been dropped from the India one-day squad for the Champions Trophy. Dinesh Karthik earns a recall after a gap of almost three years, and Umesh Yadav returns from injury.

Shikhar Dhawan, who grabbed the headlines during the home Tests against Australia and has done well in the IPL since recovering from a hand injury, has made the 15. Allrounder Irfan Pathan, seamer Vinay Kumar and batsman M Vijay also make a comeback.

Apart from Gambhir and Yuvraj, four other players who were part of the squad for India's previous one-day assignment, the home ODIs against England in January, miss out: batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara - who is injured - and Ajinkya Rahane, and fast bowlers Ashok Dinda and Shami Ahmed.

That leaves the squad with Dhawan, Vijay, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma as specialist batsmen. Karthik will be the back-up keeper behind MS Dhoni - though he is capable of fitting into the XI as just a batsman as well - while the spin department has a mix in offspinner R Ashwin, left-armer Ravindra Jadeja and legspinner Amit Mishra. Given the conditions in England, India were expected to go in with a five-man pace attack, and that is what they have done: Irfan, Umesh, Vinay, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma complete the 15.

Gambhir managed 127 runs in five ODIs against England, and 34 runs in three against Pakistan before that. Yuvraj has one half-century in eight one-dayers since returning to the side following the completion of his cancer treatment.

There is, however, hope for Gambhir to be recalled for the tri-series in the West Indies, also featuring Sri Lanka, following the Champions Trophy. Gambhir has been included in the probables for the tour, along with Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Ambati Rayudu and Rahul Sharma. The selectors will pick from the 21 probables, which includes the 15 picked for the Champions Trophy.

Seniors Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh have not been able to force their way back in. They, along with the injured and out of favour Zaheer Khan, were not even in the 30 probables announced for the Champions Trophy.

Karthik has been the mainstay of the Mumbai Indians batting so far in the IPL, with 331 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 140. He had a solid first-class season before that, scoring 577 runs at 64.11 for Tamil Nadu.

Dhawan has previously played five ODIs for India, the last of which was two years ago, but only generated widespread interest on hitting the fastest century by Test debutant in Mohali in March. Following that he missed the final Test of the Australia series, in Delhi, and the first couple of weeks of the IPL due to injury, but has scored two unbeaten half-centuries in three games on return.

Umesh was ruled out with a stress reaction in his back during the home Tests against England last year, his last game for India being the Ahmedabad Test in November. Yadav resumed bowling in the first week of March, and then played the domestic T20 tournament, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has been Delhi Daredevils' leading wicket-taker in the IPL so far, with 13 scalps at 20.92, and has particularly impressed with his tidy bowling at the death.

Irfan last played for India at the World T20 in Sri Lanka last September-October, and then picked up a knee injury in the Ranji Trophy ahead of India's home season. Vinay had not made the Indian team since a hamstring injury ruled him out of India's limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka in July 2012.

There had been speculation as to whether Mishra would miss out to a pace bowler for the tournament in England, but he has retained his place in the squad following a solid showing for Sunrisers Hyderabad - apart from being their leading wicket-taker so far with 16 in 10 games, he has produced handy cameos with the bat for the side.

Dinda, on the other hand, has had a woeful IPL till date for Pune Warriors, being the tournament's most expensive bowler at the death. So far, a fifth of IPL 2013's sixes have been hit off Dinda.

Rahane could not take advantage of the opportunities given to him in the one-day series' against Pakistan and England, totalling 55 runs in four matches - of which 47 came in one innings against England in Rajkot.

Can we swap Viajy with Rahane!! Rahane was warming bench when he was in great form. He got very few chances when comapred to likes of Rohit Sharma. He looks like back in touch with back to back fifties for RR. Murali Vijay has not impressed so far in IPL. we can keep him as opener for tests.

My Dream Team:

Dhawan, Sachin, Kohli, Rohit, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, Aswin, Vinaykumar, U Yadav.

Pujara and Rahane out but Rohit Sharma in??? Seriously? Rohit Sharma is most overrated player of all times I have seen in my life!! He is no better than a pinch hitter!! Useless selection! Also I dont understand why Dhoni is stubborn with M.Vijay ? CSK hangover? He is unfit for short versions of the game!!! Pujara and Rahane havent been used well!! I am happy with the selection except Rohit Sharma and Murali Vijay!!

Droping Yuvraj is worst decision by selector bcz Indian Team dont have all-rounder player who can take place of yuvi.... so bad decision

Posted by   on (May 8, 2013, 13:56 GMT)

pujara should be picked instead of irfan

Posted by Naresh28 on (May 7, 2013, 9:56 GMT)

@crictical thinkiing good points raised by you. The best way of getting youngstersready is by sending out A-teams and U19 teams to play all over. BCCI HAS SADLY LACKED IN THIS ASPECT. India knows they have an abundance of talent in cricket. The best way to tap this talent and find the best players is to send them on tours like this. People like Chand, Aparajith, Samson need to be exposed in these sort of teams. Send them to Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, NZ ,Oz, SA wherever. BCCI makes so much money but cannot organise these youngsters - WHY? The ladies team is virtually non-existent. The only lifeline these players have is theIPL. But dont let the IPL spoil forward planning. BCCI should not be run by businessmen and politicians

Excellent selection by the selectors...dropping yuvraj singh, virender sehwag and gautam gambhir was always a bold decion... Bt they have made a correct decision...it is well established fact that whosoever player performs shall be selected in the team...this time selector laid emphasis on the performance of the players... They really made execellent choice..Bt one thing shocked me the most... Why they havent selected parveen kumAr.. In english conditions he is an excellent bowler... He is a master of swing bowling..in indian team no one swings the bowl more than of parveen kumar..

Posted by Meety on (May 7, 2013, 3:04 GMT)

So following on from my previous post, this is one of the "oddest" Indian teams ever. Apart from any Indian side lobbing up to a World Event without Tendulkar must look a bit threadbare, the strengths & weaknesses of this squad is out of kilter with Indian tradition. This side will boast a 3-prong seam attack that SHOULD do well in English conditions, the squad (except for Ashwin) look like the most athletic India have ever assembled, yet they will probably have the most inexperienced & raw batting line up in a long long time. A lot will depend on Kholi & Dhoni with the batting. If India can be well placed at the 30 to 35th over stage, I think Jadeja could produce some momentum. I don't expect India to do too well, but the investment in youth in this squad will pay dividends down the track! ps: I actually thought that Yuvraj spin-bowling could of been very handy if selected.

Posted by Meety on (May 7, 2013, 2:59 GMT)

Pretty good squad. Bhuvi COULD do very well in England. Hopefully Yadav will be 100% fit, if so, he gives India a bit of mongrel with the ball, (sort of like Brett Lee for Oz). Ishant has to tour, at his best he could be very good in England. India will have to play a 3-seam attack. I am not convinced that Ashwin is anything but a home-bully boy, so this could be a step in proving or disproving that notion, he'd have to play as the specialist spinner, although his fielding would be a big cross. On the topic of fielding, this looks like the best fielding squad India have put forward in a long time (maybe ever?). Jadeja apart from playing the role of allrounder, will combine well with Kholi in the circle. I can see the POTENTIAL of India actually applying pressure in the field for once. Batting is a big ?-mark. No Sachin, (leaves a hole) no Sehwag, no Ghambir, no Yuvraj - AND CRUCIALLY no Pujarra means that Dhoni must be getting that Clarke feeling soon!

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 17:32 GMT)

Fair selection..But wud have to say 'Shami' has done nothing wrong and should have been in place of Vinay Kumar... Shami, though hasn't performed well in the IPL so far..but still considering his performance in some of the 'A' tours was decent too(In NZ,WI and ENG)..His and bhuvi's..' And amongst the five seamers that have been picked..Three of them-Irfan,Bhuvi and Vinay..are effective only in the first 15 overs when the ball is new.. So inclusion of Shami would have given the team more variety to pick from.. Anyway,I wud go with Umesh and Bhuvnesh.. Gud luck to Dhoni and India.. The best line I think wud be-Dhawan,Vijay,Kohli,Rohit,Raina,Dhoni,'Sir',Ashwin,Bhuvi,Umesh,Ishant

Indian squad more looks like CSK team 1/3 of the squad plays for CSK!!!

Posted by Temuzin on (May 6, 2013, 17:10 GMT)

Nohit Sharma again?? This guy is going to show how to get out gracefully in all matches.

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 16:05 GMT)

The way PK is bowling at the moment, its a real shame that he cannot make it to CT. England had ideal conditions for a bowler like him. His lack of discipline might have cost him a place in the team. But I would rather have someone like him than a Vinay Kumar, who can only bowl slower and very slower balls. PK can use the long handle to a good effect too. Viney Kumar is good for IPL, but thats where his utility ends.

Posted by ThyrSaadam on (May 6, 2013, 14:45 GMT)

Questionable inclusion is that of Vijay. He showed form in test matches, and one would question if that was the bench mark used, as currently Yuvi, GG (to some extent), and Vijay are struggling in t20.

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 13:54 GMT)

I think praveen kumar is a better fit in this team than vinay or ishant

Posted by dork29 on (May 6, 2013, 13:40 GMT)

Sandeep Patil was a fearless batsman during his salad days and carried over the straightforward and no nonsesnse attitude to his post retirement life as well. He had had an exceedingly successful stint with Kenya as their coach and is a man known for his courage and clarity of thought. Ever since he has stepped in as a national selector, things have looked up for india. The selection for the Champions Triophy reflects this. In less than an year he has axed Gambhir, Yovraj, Harbhajan and Sehwag. Very few could have taken such a bold step. I agree Vijay's inclusion is debatable - but then who else is there to open? Rahane could not capitalise on the opportunities given to him. Gauti and Veeru are out. And Vijay's performance against Australia might have helped him. Selecting Amit Mishra is a master stroke. The only irritant now is the coach.Duncan Fletcher has been an embarassment from Day 1. He needs to go. Rohit should be named vice captain. Right now this is the best team we can field.

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 10:58 GMT)

Good to see Dinesh Karthik back in the squad. The kind of form he is in, I hope he get a chance to play as a specialist batsman in the team rather than a backup keeper.

Posted by plmk on (May 6, 2013, 9:26 GMT)

@THE BOSS: I understand your point when you talk about Ghambir and Yuvi, but it is not fair to apply the same for Rhane (after warming the bench in ODIs and Tests) after just giving oppurtunity in 4 matches to exhibit his talent, if the selectors are going by Current form (Like in the selection of Rohit Sharma) then again he should have been given a chance. I think Rahane is a better opener by FAR than Murali Vijay(these words are from a die hard CSK Fan from TN).

I assure you that Rohit is going to fail again (in English conditions) and he will be out of the team for the tri-series in Westindies. Its hard to digest that Rahane doesn't find a place in the 21 Probables for the WI tour aswell.

Irfan is another suprise inclusion Praveen Kumar could have been a better choice after his show in Engalnd. Jadeja has not been that great in ODIs, may be his current form in the AUS Test series and IPL would have got him the NOD. Lets see what SIR RAVINDRA JADEJA has in store for the fans!

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 8:17 GMT)

Vijay and Vinay Kumar the worst selection

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 6:38 GMT)

perfect selection what i felt for the first time made by indian selectors, they have not only taken IPL as the base but they have kept the English conditions in the mind as well, it look like the bowling is really good to give the opposition their own taste. Dhoni will get this trophy for us and prove why he is the most talented Indian captain... all the best team INDIA, bleed blue.

Posted by D.Bagherwal on (May 6, 2013, 5:51 GMT)

At the first sight the selection is seem to be good, but not justified enough. dropping Rahane & Yuvraj after few failures then what the hell rohit sharma is doing in the team. Rahane is long term perspective & far far ahead of rohit sharma in terms of technique & temperament. he deserve some more chances.

dropping of Yuvraj is also raise the eye brows, he fits in the slot of allrounder. After recovering from cancer decease, he definitely needs some more opportunities in the team to gain his confidence. On the bowling side Praveen kumar could have been selected considering his success in previous England tour. In England's swinging conditions he could have been proved much more effective then Vinay Kumar. After all, selectors have done their job, ALL THE BEST TO TEAM INDIA.

Posted by Ayush_Chauhan on (May 6, 2013, 5:49 GMT)

This is good young squad. We have to remember though, not to expect too high from this team, as most of them are young. I hope Karthik plays, I have always liked him a batsman.

Posted by   on (May 6, 2013, 5:18 GMT)

Its baffling to see such a selection. What on earth have M.Vijay and Vinay Kumar done to justify their selection? Praveen Kumar genuinely deserved the fast bowling perth and Manoj Tiwary should have been there after warming the bench for 4 years instead of Vijay. Also India could have taken Pujara along. I am genuinely shocked by the choice of players by the selectors.

Posted by Publickakaptan on (May 6, 2013, 4:40 GMT)

Only four player have survived from World Cup Team of 2011 to play Champions Trophy.Dhoni,Raina,Kohli and Ashwin are only surviving members.

Posted by vvnathan on (May 6, 2013, 2:55 GMT)

Murali Vijay inclusion is questionable. From CSK four players in India Team: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin. M. Vijay

My Team Playing XI: 1.Shikhar Dhawan 2.Dinesh Karthik, 3.Virat Kohli, 4.Rohit Sharma 5.Suresh Raina 6.MS Dhoni (capt & wk) 7.Ravindra Jadeja 8.Irfan Pathan 9. R Ashwin 10.Bhuvneshwar Kumar 11.Vinay Kumar

Pujara Instead of Vijay should have been a Better Option..

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 16:33 GMT)

Why they haven;t selected Manoj Tiwari?

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 16:09 GMT)

Seems to be a good decision for the excluding Yuvraj but a bit shocking for Rahane as he is proving to be a good fielder in IPL, not good shape in batting.

Inclusion of Amit Mishra, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Kartik and Shikar Dhawan is also a good decision.

Best of Luck TEAM BLUE.....

Giving gambhir no place in the squad is 100% right decision

Posted by stshekhar on (May 5, 2013, 14:53 GMT)

I have doubt with two selection choices:---- 1. Murli Vijay for Rahane 2. Vinay kumar for any other bowler.

Posted by ccriccfan on (May 5, 2013, 13:09 GMT)

To "Criticalthinking"'s comment, if you want your players to get accustomed to foreigh conditions you don't send them for trials in important tournaments like champion's trophy. In fact, you do that at home, you build pitches at home to prepare your players for that not overseas. Like i said, mark my words, indians will fail miserably.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 10:21 GMT)

The team selection is awesome,,no doubt dis is the best team for champions trophy becoz all are good job in ipl 2013 but i m quite shocked exclusion of gautam gambhir becoz gauti has well performed in ipl for kkr but however he is not in team but no worry selector have more sense above me and they know more who is best for this champion trophy acc. to my point of views this tme selecting team most pay attention for bowling category becoz due to lack of bowler india loss many match bt here no prob mix up with spinn and pace bowler( ishant sharma, vinay kumar bhuvneshwar kumar) all pace and( amit mishra ashwin and ravindra jadega) spinn all are suprb and showed best efforts in ipl... i hope selected team win champions trophy for india......

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 9:16 GMT)

The overall selection is good, the selectors have gone by the recent form. Iinclusion of Murali Vijay surprises me. Scoring a big 50 in on match and then have series of low scores is not consistency. He is even not in the playing eleven of the CSK after the initial few matches. I feel for Badrinath whom I feel is more consistent and delivers whenever the team needs him. Good luck team!

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 9:09 GMT)

two debatable inclusions:vijay and vinay....

y pick sum1 who has neither pace nor swing???praveen wud hav been more than a handful in the swinging conditions of eng in place of vinay who is a very sub-standard bowler......dnt go on ipl wickts as they are more due to btsmn mistakes....

rahane shud hv been included in place of vijay as he showed last year and deserves another go...

other than that a very gud team...shud win 2 of 3 group mtches and reach the finals........#BLEEDBLUE

For all those who are calling for murali vijay's head accepted he is not eligible to be in the ODI squad.Only some people have asked why is rohit sharma in the team,if vijay doesnt deserve a place what did this crap rohit sharma do to earn a place.Atleast murali vijay was the highest run getter in the Ind Vs Aus Test series.Rohit sharma has nothing.. he has been given quite a long rope to succeed.88 matches avg:30 disaster. 2 hundred's against srilanka and zimbabwe wat a player!! One more question wat did shikhar dhawan do to earn a ODI chance. For all those who are telling only csk players are in the squad ashwin jadeja raina n dhoni should b in any squad.. only thing all u guys are jealous of csk.now dare speak the mumbai fans.now justify dhawan and rohit's place in the team.. grow up please mumbai n other ipl team fans.only suprising thing is the exclusion of yuvraj singh which is sad for a player of yuvraj's stature.he should replace the great mumbai indians captain rohit sharma.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (May 5, 2013, 9:08 GMT)

The best XI - Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Samson, Piyush Chawla, Ashok Dinda, PA Patel, Vihari, A Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Mithun Manhas. They will surely be able to win the CT.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 8:58 GMT)

dropping yuvraj just by seeing his performance is not at all fair. every player will have a bad season time to time.. yuvraj is the most experienced guy as of now in the squad. selectors will definitely feel later for dropping him from the squad. he is a great player and match winner,etc.. that too at seaming conditions in england definitely yuvi's drop is ridiculous. even is vijay is not in good form in IPL. may be dhoni wants all chennai super kings players to be there in indian team. its all politics only.. i am very much disappointed with yuvi dropped from the team.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

without seniors like viru, gauti nd zaheer.... ways r nt going 2 b easy!!!

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 8:24 GMT)

It is a good team selection though todays 50 over match need test match kind of skills for both batting and bowling. Ability to play long innings and picking wickets is key. The only tight calls are the absence of Gambhir and Pujara, Vinay/ Irfan Pathan instead of Praveen Kumar. Praveen Kumar bowled beautifully in England last year in the tests and lost his way due to injury. Given his ability to persevere and ability to get wickets, he should have been there. Even assuming Pujara is injured, Gambhir shd hv been a automatic choice.... Gambhir has been India's mainstay in 1- day and deserved to be there. Nevertheless the return of Karthik is heartwarming. Rahane is unlucky. He has to grab his chances and do well in the remaining IPL matches to be in the frame for selection. He has to make the selectors forget his bad debut. Lastly Yuvraj. It is sad that he misses out. He shd get himself an English contract, perform and force selectors to pick him

Posted by JohnDoe123123 on (May 5, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

" So far, a fifth of IPL 2013's sixes have been hit off Dinda." This statement is inaccurate. Dinda has conceded 14 sixes so far. The total number of sixes in IPL 2013 (as of now) is 406. Even if the author meant 'a fifth of death over sixes', I'd doubt it. On a different note, it'd be easier of Cricinfo started showing number of 6s and 4s conceded by bowlers for 20-20s in the full score card.

Rohit Sharma wil be the best batsman in all form of cricket

Good team selection, but they can selected another all-rounder rather than Ishant.

Anyway good team all the best

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 6:24 GMT)

This team is really fantastic.. The selection panel does a superb job by emphasizing current form rather sole reputation . Hats off selector! Uv's sacking is pretty obvious for his lacking in nick... Happy for Gauti as we will get much needed ample time to get back to his best. One puzzling selection is vijay inclusion though I'm not surprise after his form in oz's series.. Nohit sharma is just ipl wonder...this it will happen too.. Good luck men in blue.

order of winning chances of trophy. SA,SL,WI,NZ,ENG,AUS,IND,PAK based on squads of all nations. i think this series will become a nightmare for dhoni mr.cool. sa has a great chance to win a ICC trophy

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:56 GMT)

Except Murali Vijay, the rest of the selections are quite justified. I would prefer Dinesh Karthick in the playing XI as opener instead of Vijay. My starting XI: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik (wk),Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Vinay Kumar

Posted by Malti65 on (May 5, 2013, 5:44 GMT)

This was comming since a long time. Both the openers were out of form since a long time. Yuvraj has always been a patchy performer. really speaking he should not have been picked after his operation. But i think it was a sympathy selection. Ashwin is definately better than Harbhajan. Zaheer will have to prove his form to get back to the team, but according to me age is against him. SUDDENLY THAT MAKES THE ENTIRE TEAM EXCEPT DHONI NEW. I say this becaue Raina has been In and out.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:43 GMT)

BCCI will now see how yuvraj is going to perform in rest of the IPL matches.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:30 GMT)

These players cannot adjust in English condition.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:30 GMT)

What has Rohit Sharma done ( apart for being from Mumbai ) to get selected ? I can't believe Rohit Sharma is IN the squad and Yuvraj Singh is not.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:18 GMT)

This is history that Indian batsman always faced problems in English and Ausse pitches, now this will be great to see how new talent will perform. Pakistan have also dropped experience players and giving chances to new talent which is good move.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:12 GMT)

very poor selection....how yuvi nd gambhir miss out...n vijay nd karthik get in??? Vijay would certainly fail in english conditions, due to lack of technic....i must say this is a T20 team nd not a 50 over team.Pravin kumar nd Bhubaneswar kr wud hav been a deadly comb in the seaming tracks...bt selectors dnt seem to hav that eye.

now i God save Indian team.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 5:11 GMT)

Is this a team selection for Champions trophy or Picnic tour. What were selectors thinking. Did they pick players purely on form, i don't think so. Oh! Murli vijay you got to be the luckiest person on this planet. when you dropped even in IPL but still you get picked for CT that too in Eng.. We can't talk about Sir Jadeja... Honorable Rohit can't be dropped either

I believe this is not good selection picking 3 spinners is not good. I say drop Jadeja when playing outside subcontinent ... we have Irfan for All-rounders slot..

My pick would be Gambhir, Dhawan , Dhoni ,Raina, Bhuvi, Irfan, Mishra, Ishant,Dinesh Kartik,Virat Kohli,Ashwin,Umesh, Shami Ahmed, Rahane, yuvraj,

Posted by KiwiRocker- on (May 5, 2013, 5:10 GMT)

There are several issues with Indian selection. This selection may have sealed India's fate even before tournament started. Murali Vijay has nothing to show for performances in England or other than IPL. However if IPL was criteria then why not pick Harbhajan as he is stand out spinner in IPL? This selection takes India back to dark days of 90's. Tried, tested and failed players like, Rohit Sharma, Karthik and Pathan are given enough chances. What wrong Chand and likes of Tiwary have comitted? Irfan Pathan is a mediocre bowler whose batting does not really make him an all rounder. What usage Jaedja will have in England? Suresh Raina was an epic failure in last English tour and was painful watching him. Why is Yuvraj dropped but not Raina. Yuvraj is a better batsman, far better bowler and superb fielder than likes of Karthtik,Raina,Vijay and etc.Indian bowling has Yadev who runs fast and bowls nothing special.Steyn, Ajmal, Junaid Khan,m.Irfan will be licking their lips at Indian line up!

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 4:50 GMT)

Murli. vijay has lost his place in IPL team on his performance based. why selectors has that much faith on him despite good performance from Gauthi and Ajinkya Rahane as opener and top order batsmen in IPL. past Ajinkya Rahane has good performance in English condition.overall good selection adding Dinesh Karthik and Shikar Dhawan both deserves a place on performance bases.

Posted by mylife4cricket on (May 5, 2013, 4:48 GMT)

A good team to fight but cannot find a reason to drop Pujara...and the inclusion of Amit Mishra in England conditions????? No Zaheer ???? what about Praveen Kumar ,he is experienced in these conditions and why this team???? whats going on?? D.Karthik & Dhawan is a good selection but lets see how they can play swing!!! Hey wait where is Manoj Tiwary??,every time he is picked he is sitting on the bench..

Posted by mxnmxn on (May 5, 2013, 4:02 GMT)

Besides Virat Kohli, Dhoni and Suresh Raina, no one is proven. Albeit selection of Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik is a good move. As such, any selection does not matter ...

My team: DK, Dhawan, Kohli, Rohith, Raina, Dhoni, Irfan,Ashwin/Mishra,Bhuvaneswar, Ishanth, Vinay kumar.

I think Yuvi is much better Player on international level then some of these other players . India won both world t20 and one day . Because of Yuvi . He always step up on big occasions . He hasn't done good in all the IPLs . So what ? My 2 cents !!

Posted by cricket-dada on (May 5, 2013, 3:01 GMT)

This team has a balls win cup, first time the Indian selectors done good job in selecting team with out considering seniority base. This all members are in form but they has to pick Rahane in the place of murali vijay because he done well in england last time.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 3:01 GMT)

I think dropping Yuvraj might not help. He is a world class ODI player.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 2:54 GMT)

Do ppl even read the article? Pujara is injured and hence has been left out. Murali vijay was the top scorer in the 4 test match series against australia. so i think he merits a chance. he has changed his game to suit tests and hence is struggling in the IPL. lets not use the IPL performances as a measuring stick, shall we?

Posted by WorldCup-XI on (May 5, 2013, 2:31 GMT)

At first glance, the team is a fresh and young team. And for the first time, Sachin is not in the ODI team for a major tournament. We will definitely miss him.

I still cant understand why Rohit Sharma gets included again and again, when it is very clear that he cannot perform well outside the Indian conditions. He will struggle in the seaming conditions, especially in England. He does well in the IPL only.

Posted by   on (May 5, 2013, 2:27 GMT)

IPL is a 20 overs game. When you select a team for champions trophy, you would have consider just the IPL. May be a good run in IPL can add some additional points. So in my opinion, selectors would have not just looked at the IPL performances. Like Karthik, Vijay had a great run in the domestic games like challenger, Irani and Ranji in the recent past. And more over, Vijay used to play for Jolly rovers, a first division that has experienced the English conditions many times. Plus, his form during the Australia series makes him the best candidate. Of course, he will tested and will be replaced if he fails. We hardly have anytime for the next world cup. We need to be ready with a good amount of players for the specialist roles like opening/spinner/speedster

dats it for INDIA and DHONI.. NO middle order like YUVI. no opner like VERRU and GAMBIR.. dat mean no experience watch india loosing first two match in row but will win against PAk jst to keep reputation.. champ trophy in south africa s HUT

Not happy with this squad tbh. Oh well on the bright side, at least Piyush Chawla isn't selected this time!

i dont think this was good team, with out yuvi we would not win cup..............good luck india try to enter atleast semi

Finding it hard to justify Rohit Sharma selection...how on earth this guy is getting selected without performing

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 23:54 GMT)

My 11 for india

1)Dhawan , 2)Vijay or Dinesh Karthik , 3)kohli , 4)Raina , 5)Dhoni , 6)Rohit , 7)Pathan , 8)Ashwin , 9)bhuvi , 10)Umesh , 11)Ishant

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 23:53 GMT)

Good to see Dinesh Karthik back in ODI Squad. He is a highly talented player only to be shadowed by MSD's greatness. Karthik can very well fit in the final XI as a specialist batsman . Also he is very good fielder. Remember, that blinder he took in slips to dismiss Smith in a t20 game. Gambhir deserves to be left out. Pace battery looks promising as well. Looking forward to see B.Kumar swinging the white ball in English conditions.I guess Ashwin will be the lone spinner in the final XI considering his batting abilities. All the best MSD n Co. Looking forward for the 'Champions' trophy. After all - we are the 'World Champions'.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 23:47 GMT)

shami ahmed should be in instead of vinay kumar. Don't mind seeing vijay in squad - with the 2 new balls, time to take an old fashioned approach to opening with the openers looking to see off the new ball instead of attack it. Guys like dhoni, raina or even irfan pathan can hit the ball long so batting at the end shouldn't be a problem. I would like to see praveen kumar in team either above ishant sharma or mishra.

Posted by chennaicricfan on (May 4, 2013, 23:18 GMT)

Vijay showed his class in the tests against Australia. But I still think that Rahane deserves a chance ahead of Vijay. His form in IPL has been pathetic. I think Rahane has more promise for the future in ODIs.

Posted by vrn59 on (May 4, 2013, 23:07 GMT)

Surprisingly good selection! My starting XI would be Shikhar Dhawan opening with either Murali Vijay or Dinesh Karthik, Virat Kohli batting at No. 3, followed by Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni (C & wk). Irfan Pathan or Ravindra Jadeja can bat at No. 7 based on the nature of the pitch and the match conditions. The bowling attack can comprise of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma (seam) and R Ashwin (spin). Amit Mishra's selection is surprising as he probably won't be needed in this tournament. Vinay Kumar probably won't make the first XI unless one of the seamers gets injured or is in woefully bad form. I support the decisions to not include Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan. This new team is fresh, young and a blueprint for the 2015 World Cup, for which it is time to begin preparations. I would have included Ajinkya Rahane though; very harsh to drop him.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 22:30 GMT)

this is one of the worst selections..national team selection should not be based on ipl where cricketing skills hardly matters...india will lose all three games..bowling selection is okay but apart frm raina dhoni and kohli no one deserves place in this team..uthappa n karthick should be there based on domestic odi performances..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 22:06 GMT)

Not sure if IPL should be the bench mark for selection. Why is Rayudu and Pujara not being selected, maybe Pujara is still recovering from injury and Rayudu is still paying the price for his rebellious move to have joined ICL in the past.

Posted by Shan156 on (May 4, 2013, 21:28 GMT)

Bad decision not to select Harbhajan Singh. HS is India's best LOI bowler and would have been a handful in England. His experience is so valuable and not sure what India's selectors are thinking. Looks like this may be curtains for his international career but India would miss a trick if they don't select him for SA. It feels like he has some more cricket left in him.

Posted by Dhutugemunu on (May 4, 2013, 21:08 GMT)

For sure India will reach semis. South Africa seems unbeatable on the cards. India have a tough team. In the other group England will dominate in their own conditions. Australia and Sri Lanka will fight for the second spot.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 21:03 GMT)

Looks like a good team.... But would still prefer Rahane or Gambhir even if as a back up... Can't imagine Rohit Sharma facing the new ball in England.... Pujara would have been the first choice for England but in all fairness we need him as a long term prospect so its best to let his recuperate for the important challenge in SA... Wishing the team all the best for a victory.... however even if we loose this series will separate the MEN from the BOYS!!

Posted by DauIsKing on (May 4, 2013, 20:45 GMT)

I do not agree with this selection, i feel that, even based on current form, yuvi should be selected as he has a good history in international tournaments, even if this 1 is in England. Gauti should also be selected as he is a dedicated batsman, and geninly deserves his place in this India side. And can anyone please tell me on what basis has mr. murali vijay has been selcted!

My final 15 squad would be:

1. MS Dhoni (wk/c) 2.Gautam Gambhir (v) 3.Virat Kohli 4.Suresh Raina 5. Ajinkya Rahane 6. Dinesh Karthik 7. Ravi Jadeja 8.Rohit Sharma 9.Shikar Dhawan 10. Ravi Ashwin 11. Bhuvi Kumar 12.Umesh Yadav 13. Ishant Sharma 14. Irfan Pathan 15. Irfan Pathan

I feel that this would be a perfectly balanced squad give our troubles in England.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 20:23 GMT)

my playing XI - dhawan, kartik, kohli, dhoni, raina, rohit, jadeja, irfan, bhuvi, ashwin, ishant. reserves: yadav, mishra, vinay, viay. since DK is playing at no 3 in IPL and he has done opening in test matches as well, he can open in testing conditions in englanad. dhawan is in the form of his life. i would want dhoni to come at 4 since raina and rohit can play well only if they have a calm head like dhoni with them. feel sorry for pravin kumar. vinay kumar does not swing like praveen. murali vijay does not deserve the opportunity ahead of yuvraj and gambhir in one dayers when he is not a regular even in CSK IPL team.

Posted by naren1983 on (May 4, 2013, 20:07 GMT)

Good to see DK and Mishra made the last 15. Lucky Vijay made himself to the selection after the good Aus Series, but his recent domestic and IPL form not made enough justice. But the team is really balanced one and definitely players good IPL form will be advantage to the team. My XI - DK, Sikhar, Virat, Raina, Rohit, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ishant, Umesh/Irfan.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 20:03 GMT)

I wonder why M Vijay got selected . Why Yuvi is not in the squad ?I think the CT 2013 will be in England. Yuvi is one of the India's best players. His performance is better than others outside India. I am shocked in for Yuvi's exclusion. He is a good finisher.

Dhoni n Jadu are good finishers in IPL and in India as well. But in England it wont work. I am damn sure.

Rahane did well in last England tour. His is in form now. Why did they remove him ? If it works , everything will be good. Otherwise SAVE UR ASSES selectors.

Good luck Guys !!!

Posted by sud_vm on (May 4, 2013, 19:37 GMT)

brilliant ... but why vinay kumar ???? for IPL he may be good bcoz of the uncertain nature of the tournament ... but i am guessing he will not be very effective on the international scene.... there's no venom in the indian bowling attack ... v gotta have someone like a Dale Steyn to terrorize the opponent

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 19:18 GMT)

I Don't understand y and how does Rohit Sharma get included in the squad almost all the time, he gets into form in every IPL, if the reason for rahane was for scoring 55 in 4 innings, How many flops has Mr. Sharma had..The batting Line up although looks good on paper, seems inexperienced and clearly lacks Variety, I hope Rohit doesnt get a game, he has never showed his spirit, and always had his shoulders down and always gives up his wicket easily, He must be an awesome player in domestic Circuit, but he is one of the biggest flops in international Scenario.

Posted by kc69 on (May 4, 2013, 19:14 GMT)

Well it seems like a great selection overall even though there are a few doubts on the selection of M Vijay who really hasn't impressed anyone except playing for BCCI franchise in IPL.Would have loved to see Viru bat along with S Dhawan opening in English conditions however the bowling selection was fair and correct now that the team has options with left and right arm swing bowling(Irfan & Bhuvaneshwar) along with Pace(Umesh & Vinay) with a quality off and legspinner(Ashwin & Mishra).I still thought Yuvraj could have made it.It would be a formidable side with Yuvi and Sehwag instead of Rohit Sharma and M Vijay.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 19:02 GMT)

India need someone special batsman to finish the innings like Yuvraj or Yousuf Pathan who can hit the ball hard, one cannot expect everytime from MSD, Apart from this how can they replace Ghambir with Vijay thats so stupid thing to do.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 19:02 GMT)

A good selection. Bhuvi will swing it both ways, Ishant will extract some seam movement, vinay did alright down under and he can keep it tight, irfan can swing it and umesh has got pace. Good bunch to work with for MSD. Expecting these rookies to do well and trouble the top order. We should play 5bowlers surely in England. MSD and Jaddu were so good during the last ODI tour. We have a great chance to win. Our batting needs to fire.

Posted by khs_shk2000 on (May 4, 2013, 18:55 GMT)

Why Murli Vijay is selected? It is very simple he is CSK team member , Dhoni's Man. Got it.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 18:47 GMT)

Oh, I love the selection. Too good. And, to all the people connecting IPL to justify or disqualify team selection, please, you need to understand ODI is so very different from T20s. Please don't do it. Only surprise is Vijay

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 18:43 GMT)

m vijay- the only player who does not deserve place in this squad.may be the only advantage 4 him is dat he is playing 4 csk in IPL. instead of vijay one should hav gone 4 yuvi........... and also where is ojha? after great series 4 him against eng.,he was not given proper chances against Aus.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 18:21 GMT)

my playing eleven - Kartik, dhawan, kohli, rohit, dhoni, raina, pathan, ashwin, bhuvi, umesh & ishant

Posted by ThIrU88 on (May 4, 2013, 18:17 GMT)

Well... The overall selection is fantastic. And inclusion of Dinesh Karthik is a very good move who has lot of cricketing talents but not utilized properly(i remember that Dhoni taken his chances that time he is better keeper than Dhoni). Another chance for Rohit as well as vijay also got a chance. Lot of negative thoughts on vijay's inclusion, hope he will reply through his batting(He changed his style of batting which is much suited for ODI and test). My choice for playing 11: 1. S Dhawan, 2. D Karthik/ M Vijay 3. V Kohli, 4. R Sharma, 5. S Raina, 6. M Dhoni, 7. R Jadeja, 8. R Ashwin/ A Mishra, 9. Vinay kumar/U Yadav, 10. B Kumar, 11. Ishant sharma. All the best...

Posted by mukeshg111 on (May 4, 2013, 18:17 GMT)

Mohit sharma will also be the good option as per his acuracy and wicket taking ability.

Posted by amrinder54 on (May 4, 2013, 18:12 GMT)

really saddened to hear about the expulsion of gambhir and yuvraj. i bet they are much better players than murli vijay and dinesh karthik. dhoni should have backed his boys, he is going the same way, as he has done with virender sehwag. therefore by looking at this team, we have no chance to win the trophy on seaming english wickets. pakistan is going to come hard at us with quality bowling attack. this team surely lack match winners. who says there is no politics in indian cricket?

Posted by MaruthuDelft on (May 4, 2013, 18:07 GMT)

Vijay's inclusion is mainly for his potential to take the match away from the opposition in 50 to 75 balls. Yuvraj....I don't know what he has. I have not seen him being brilliant except for that WC Quarters against Aussies; but in the next after almost making a trench on turf with those stupid hard taps he was bowled first ball; he looked stupid; he never looks switched on in the middle. But another sleeper Rohit is included. It is right to drop Gambhir; another stupid cricketer. Bhadrinath should have been taken in since Pujara is not in to provide middle order stability.

Posted by KK_Cricket on (May 4, 2013, 18:05 GMT)

People think selectors have done great job! Lets wait when we are the first team to come back home.. Got to question the people who think Raina, Sharma and Dhoni for that matter can tackle swing and seam in English conditions... And Vijay, please don't sing laurels for him.. have you seen him in the IPL? He is a walking wicket and against likes of Roach, Steyn, Morkel, Junaid and Irfan you know what would be the result.., remember Gambhir is a big match/tournament player.. T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup.. although Dhoni played well, it was his innings which set up the victory for India.. he is a great counter attacking player who could have complimented Dhawan well.. And why not Yuvraj, he is a match winner and would be better than R Jadeja, who will get all games because of obvious reasons.. Mini CSK can win IPLs, not Champions Trophies or World cups.. And you cannot select Sharma just because he is doing well in IPL.. remember his form before this and his innings against SA in T20 WC?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 18:00 GMT)

Dont know y gambhir is dropped instead of vijay.may be bcauz gambhir is not in csk,or in may be he beat csk in final last year...well done dhoni and selectors..u even forgot the men who was there at the world cup final for the team, and still didnt got the MOM..Its very very unfair..5 players from csk.wow..at least stuart binny should got a chance instead of Vijay.. Dhoni is doing exactly he has done to ganguly, and many more....

Posted by rakon_me on (May 4, 2013, 17:31 GMT)

this is a good team ....the only concern is Vijay. hope he can live up to the expectation..Those who are commenting about the team should realise that this is the starting point for the world cup preparation..the selectors will stick to this team in the next few months..virat,suresh, rohit and karthik will be the core of the middle order and they need to play maximum matches as possible until the world cup...Yuvi will return for sure... He always comes back strongly and i hope he comes back again...Team India needs him in future...the bowling looks good but i would have preferred praveen kumar over vinay.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 17:26 GMT)

Shami Ahmed was looking good. In english conditions he would have done well.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 17:23 GMT)

Brilliant selection.... rather a "brave" selection. The selectors are doing the right thing. They are sending a message to every Indian cricketer "Perform or perish" - for the likes of Gambhir, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Harbajan, Zaheer, and a more positive one for those dying for a spot in the Indian team "If you play well, you will be rewarded".

Good direction for Indian cricket. The team has a good mix of the professionals, MSD, Ashwin, Raina, Virat, Yadav, Mishra, Ishant, who've been in the game for a while, and the new-comers, those who are just entering the big stage, ie, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay. Then, the talented but debatable inclusions, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, Irfan, Vinay.

Shows they also have in mind the World Cup defence, which MSD may not be a part of, hopefully, he will.

Good Luck Team India.

This is a good team. I just feel bad for Shami Ahmed. I thought he bowled reasonably well in the last series. M.Vijay and R.Sharma need to prove themselves. Never been a fan of shamra. Hasnt really lived up to potential but keeps getting a lot of chances. There are some better players who also deserve as much chances as Sharma has been given. Good to see Pathan Back.

Posted by dhoni_sachin_fan on (May 4, 2013, 17:10 GMT)

Excellent selection. Love this selection panel for their bold decisions. One thing comes out clearly - They want to build a team for 2015 WC. Do you see Yuvraj, Gambhir and Sehwag playing in 2015? What is the point of picking them now? Though I would have loved to see Rahane in place of Vijay, I wouldn't mind the selectors trying out Vijay again in the shorter format to ascertain if he fits there or not.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 16:59 GMT)

Only error in this selection is irfan pathan rather than ajinkya rahane rest of the team is fine

i am quite content about team selection, especially not picking up gambhir , he must punish for his degradation to legend, make sure he won't play for india again, he is indiscipline and useless player, we have number of replacement

Everything is Fine Apart From Murli Vijay..!

Posted by LovedFansofIndianCricket on (May 4, 2013, 16:31 GMT)

Loop of Rohit. Plays well in IPL---> Selected for Indian Team -----> Plays badly till next IPL-----> Plays well in Next IPL. IPL ends Champion Trophy starts, loop continues. Selector pls give chance for Manoj Tiwary, Badri, or any other uncaped player like Mandip Singh, Sanju Samson, Sachin Baby, Stuart Binny or Parvez rasool.

Posted by arenness on (May 4, 2013, 16:17 GMT)

Vinay Kumar has been tried and has not succeeded in Internationals. He does not deserve most of the wickets he took in this year's IPL. A number of wickets came from poor deliveries which should have been hit for a six. He is at the most lucky. Like wise Murali Vijay does not deserve a selection on his current form. Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthick have struggled in International matches. They are local heroes. Over all the selection shows the lack of courage in the selection panel and they are afraid of innovations.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 16:14 GMT)

Agreed with all the stats that have been put up against yuvi and gauti.. But what has Rohit sharma done Barring that 83 he has failed to cross double digit in last one year.. He might be talented but he is given too long a run to be justified

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 16:14 GMT)

I really Want to See C.Pujara ! why he is not selected ?

Posted by Sano27 on (May 4, 2013, 16:13 GMT)

Gambhir & Pujara's ommision was quite unacceptable as Gauti is one of the top performer for india in recent years in ODI & also the conditions in England will suit Pujara alot....Yuvraj is struggling with his fitness & form...so that decision is ok....Good to see Mishra & Karthik in Indian colours as both have the ability to play for India....M Vijay is a bad choice as there are so many talented guys like M.Tiwary , Pujara , Rahane waiting outside...Praveen Kumar is a surprise omission as the England conditions suits him alot...probably Bhuvaneshwar Kumar's swinging ability is the factor for his ommission....all the best for Team India after regrouping from IPL !!

Posted by rkannancrown on (May 4, 2013, 16:10 GMT)

The choice of Karthik as virtual third opener is logical given his good record as opener in the 2007 series in England. Once again Manoj Tiwari gets a raw deal while Rohit gets another opportunity. The team selection points to Dhoni batting higher to accommodate 5 bowlers.

Posted by asithaSL on (May 4, 2013, 16:09 GMT)

Wow....!! Dropping Gambhir is really a major risk... I don't think, India even come to semi's without Gambhir. He is da one batsmen who performed brilliant in final match of any major tournament.... Hope to see Gambhir in national squared very soon...

Posted by Triple_A on (May 4, 2013, 16:07 GMT)

This seems to be a really good selection. Some might argue that we needed Yuvraj's experience, but he seems to be at sea even in India conditions right now. I think time away from the game will help. Now that the selectors have taken the bold, but correct steps, I hope Dhoni chooses his team impartially. It is interesting to note that 5/15 players play for CSK - we can argue whether this is Srini's influence, or just pure talent in the CSK squad. According to me, players like Vijay and Jadeja should not be in the playing XI - Vijay is not suited for ODIs and Jadeja is not suited for English conditions. My team would be:

Dhawan, Karthik, Kohli, Sharma, Dhoni, Raina, Pathan, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Yadav, Ishant

5 batsmen, 1 keeper, 5 bowlers - Kohli and Raina can bowl a few if required - All but the last two can bat decently - Left-right opening combo - 4 seamers = 2 swing bowlers + 2 pace. And everyone is in form presently - comments??!

Posted by ccriccfan on (May 4, 2013, 16:04 GMT)

Better selection or not, India will crash out early. Playing in IPL is no way to prepare team for seam/swing conditions in england; mark my words!

Yuvraj should have picked as hitter .. i doubt raina but really happy for Rohit .. still dont know why R jadejais picked maybe for filling the water bottles...S9

Posted by sents2013 on (May 4, 2013, 16:01 GMT)

Good decision. May have left Rohit Sharma and tried someone else. Selecting Amit Mishra is a very good decision.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 15:53 GMT)

Selection looks perfect but for the inclusion of Murali Vijay. How does someone who can't get a place in IPL XI, finds one in the national side? Poor Rayudu has been denied opportunities to bat for MI. For someone who blasted into limelight batting at #3, he has been compromised despite an ordinary season for MI. He should have been selected in place of Vijay. Dropping Yuvraj was indeed the right call.. while we love him and his abilities so much, what does one do if he can't even get 50s? Karthik or Rohit should open with Shikhar Dhawan. I really hope Ishant, Mishra and Vinay don't back fire at the national level. This definitely is the best side India could ask for at the moment and the selectors are being very practical. (Besides Vijay's selection that is..)

Posted by Ranjit_sourav on (May 4, 2013, 15:53 GMT)

Really good team selection with lot of young bloods, I think Gambhir deserved this mainly because of his attitude. Fighting with Dravid is absolutely ridiculous and we all knew about our wall. As this exclusion is purposely done for his attitude. Virat too need to change his attitude, Learn from other youngsters guys (Pujara,Dhawan,Raina and Jadeja), They were aggressive in field only in terms of playing and not fighting unnecessarily.

Posted by him1618 on (May 4, 2013, 15:51 GMT)

Very bold and sensible selection... kudos to the selectors for including the legspinner...speaks of an attacking mindset...Dropping Gambhir is a surprise since he has been doing well in the IPL and seems to have regained his form. In English conditions I don't think Jadeja merits a place in the XI and the all-rounder spot should go to Pathan with his medium pace swing which can come in handy. The bowling looks settled. Perhaps they should have picked Rayudu instead of Jadeja, as he cannot bat in England and his spin is of no value on English pitches. My XI:

Vijay, Dhawan, Kohli, Dhoni, Rohit, Karthik, Pathan, Umesh/Ishant, Bhuvneshwar, Ashwin, Mishra

Well balanced attack with deep batting. Hope they do well...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 15:50 GMT)

why the BCCI doesn't consider Pujara he proved himself in the past two test series(eng, aus). He's more handful bastsen in the limited overs particularly in england. I'm shocked to see Vijay got d chance it's just wasting aplace in the team,he had already given enough chances.I thought that rahane , pujara will be considered to him. We'll wait n see what happens

India will not even qualify for semis, England and South africa have best chances of wining the trophy.

Posted by Sooraj4cricket on (May 4, 2013, 15:46 GMT)

The team certainly looks good on paper. But it always boils down to performing on that day.India have won tournaments with no great names (t20 wc 2007) and lost inspite of having them(wc 2007).And selecting a player on IPL performance is rubbish.Yuvi is player who doesnt perform that well in the IPL,but saves his best for the nation..Arguments about Gambhir exclusion, though he's having a good IPL and Vijay inclusion though he's not in CSK XI are baseless.I can see Vijay's ability in english conditions being questioned, but neither Dhawan nor Rohit have proved well in England.Another important aspect is death bowling.Except for Umesh,no one can be relied upon in the death overs. And 1st match is against SA,the best, and 3rd is against PAK,who always perform well in english conditions thanks to their fast bowlers. So,I sincerely hope the men in blue dont come up with another mediocre performace & MSD can recreate some magic..!!!

Posted by spinkingKK on (May 4, 2013, 15:43 GMT)

I don't know why IPL is a yardstick for the selection of an ODI team. But, they have got some names right nevertheless. Karthik, Dhawan, Vijay and Irfan should always be in the team and they got that right. However, I don't understand why Tiwary was not picked in place of Rohit Sharma. If performance in the ODI's is anything to go by, Tiwary has excelled everytime he was given a chance. Rohit might one day excel. But, right now the performance should be rewarded and Tiwary is hardly done by his selectors. Mishra's case is also a bit questionable. Could have gone to Yuvraj instead. But, I have to wish all the best to Mishra and all others anyway. Overall, the team looks ok.

Posted by soumyas on (May 4, 2013, 15:43 GMT)

Gambhir is always in my team, but sorry to hear Vijay in his place...England conditions will be completely different and indian batsmen will dance in the crease to face the swing, forget middling the ball, they might not even edge...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 15:43 GMT)

Dropping yuvraj is a horrible decision ,he always does well in big tournaments and india has lost one of its greatest assets . For me India has weakened their team .Murli vijay seriously, wow and how many more chances ,dinesh Karthik and rohit sharma want . I will be suprised if India end up winning , hoping they do win though .And i assure you yuvraj will bounce back .

Posted by Boby711 on (May 4, 2013, 15:41 GMT)

This selection panel is picking and dropping players based on past and recent FORM. If that is the case, then why Murli Vijay has been picked. Sure, he did good in the test matches but not good enough in the short format of the game, specially in on going IPL.

Posted by Cricket_Fan_And_Analyst on (May 4, 2013, 15:36 GMT)

Team looks good. Only thing I would change is stick with Rahane. He played well in the last tour in ODIs. Vijay is not a bad option. May be they want him to get familiar with condition of seam and swing before S.A. tour.

Posted by screamingeagle on (May 4, 2013, 15:31 GMT)

All the posters crying about Yuvi and Gauti...move on! They have had their chance, did not do enough, others will get a chance. This team looks pretty good, only refrain is that no big names are there. But that, I think, is a good thing.

Super selection!!! BCCI is actually now a super selector...my only grouse here is M Vijay...as much as i enjoy his batting...his test showing may not translate into the shorter format... Dropping yuvraj is one of the wisest, if not the best, decision taken by the selectors...previous selectors wud have overcome with sympathy and past glory and picked him... Yuvraj is a class act, i love every bit of his batting...he will make a come back...current form, he doesnt warrant a place.... Karthik is a welcome change...the presence of Ishant in both the formats continues to baffle me.... Neways am sure the team would do well in this tournament....unless they decide not to shed the IPL mould!!

All the people appreciating the selection here....... lemme ask yu few things...

Are Vijay,Jadeja Better players than Gambhir,Yuvraj.... Fine if yu say that they have done something brilliant in the IPL...

Bitch please....!! this is home..wer the spin is the most assisted...& its England...wer the pitches Are Pacy N bouncy

Yuvraj is one such guy who has proved many a times in the pacy tracks of England And South Africa.....(hope i need not remind yu ppl what happened at Durban in 2007)

GOd yu Ppl suck supportin that Politics..

Excellent squad, Each players deserves his place, dropped players have nothing to complain , though shami ahmed is unlucky to miss out coz this tournament is in england irfan pathan has edged shami out.Rahane has to be more consistent, Bhaji/Yuvi is fnished, Dinda is not even good enough for IPL, Cheteshwar has own issues. After a long time the selection panel is bingo.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 15:12 GMT)

Looks out a quite Balance outfit but Yuvi should have been included and also M Vijay may have done well for Test Series but his One Day average is Below average, Should have included M Tiwary and also S Ahmed

Indian so called selectors selected a one of the worst team for icc major tournament. they selected twenty 20 team for 50 over game people like rohit sharma raina jadeja murli vijay mishra ashwin all perform well only in ipl there records in 50 overs games are not good as in t20.droping yuvraj gambhir sehwag from champions trophy is very sad because they are big tournament players and they do well in big matches. everybody shouting for youngsters who youngsters raina sharma jadeja vijay u people just see there 50 over record and averages in cricinfo and then talk. I'm big fan of Indian cricket team but my hope for champions trophy is big 0 from this team.

Posted by george_sabby123 on (May 4, 2013, 15:00 GMT)

with Sehwag already out of the scheme of things .. India definitely needed Yuvraj in the middle order with the experience he has .... also with an added benefit that he can bowl .. Gambhir always a better option ahead of M. Vijay .. looking at the performance of Gambhir in the IPL.. he is batting well in the middle and should have been given another chance..

Posted by am26884 on (May 4, 2013, 14:58 GMT)

Current form of Murli Vijay is also not in a good state and in my opinion currently Mohit Sharma would have been a better option then Vinay Kumar. Yuvi form is down but sometime his bowling performance does wonder for Team India

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 14:48 GMT)

CONGRATULATIONS! Karthik you really deserve this for all wonderful and consistent show with the bat.KUDOS to the Selectors selection absolutely on Merit and definitely those who were left out cannot grumble as they need to do some homework.M Vijay having been given a chance need to prove himself if included in the XI.ALL THE BEST for Dhoni & Co.

Posted by siddharth_r2001 on (May 4, 2013, 14:41 GMT)

While I agree that Dinda does not deserve a place in the Indian team and in fact he (and Vinay Kumar too!) shouldn't be anywhere NEAR an Indian squad, the statement "a fifth of IPL 2013's sixes have been hit off Dinda" is misleading and unfair to Dinda. I believe the correct fact is that a fifth of the sixes hit in the death overs (16-20) have been off Dinda. Overall, there have been almost 400 sixes hit in the entire IPL 2013 which would mean close to 80 sixes off Dinda, which is wrong!

Posted by shrastogi on (May 4, 2013, 14:38 GMT)

If Pujara is injured then this is a good team though I would have selected Yuvraj ahead of Vijay. And this should also be Rohit Sharma's last chance. Dinesh Karthik can fit in as a specialist batsman as well which gives team much needed balance. Mind you India is the top one day team at the moment having won one day shield and should be expected to reach at least SF. Road is not easy as India is in tough group. Lets hope for the best.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 14:34 GMT)

Can't understand M. Vijay getting selected despite awful IPL performance. Is it that he is close to BCCI Chief that he gets selected and from Chennai? Ridiculous indeed. Yes dropping Gauti & Yuvi excellent, no doubt. I would have preferred Shami Ahmed excellent for English conditions, better than erratic Vinaykumar. Shami needs to be given ample opprtunities like Bhuvi. Both are our future medium pacers. Vijay has to prove that his selection is not biassed and perform well. Even CSK has dropped him for more awaful Saha. What MSD finds in Saha, GOD knows.

Posted by takeitbyy on (May 4, 2013, 14:34 GMT)

Good team selected. Shami should be in for Ishant. There are many who do very well in ranji , how much time they would have to wait? Sehwag should be given one last chance. Vijay should be in Test team, if he is not performing well in ipl y he has been selected, mohit sharma should also be given a chance.

All pandits says dhony is the best captain.they must know, some one don't believe so. 75% of this selection made by dhony.only 25% to selecters. dhonys pets ,like raina, aswin, muraly vijay, jadeja include this team.we must remember m vijay not include csk's present playing eleven. but he include this team!.he is better than gambeer?.d karthik inclution by selecters. but dhony donot give a chance to him.he fears dk's batting and keeping ability.Suresh raina is a wonnder boy in indian cricket!.in sub continantal pitches , he is tiger.in pace pitches like auz.eng,nz,sa ,he is rate. no one get such redeculous boost like him, in indian cricket. raina is better than yuvaraj?cricket is only fielding ability? short pitch bowling a fear factor to him. we proud this this indian team in concern with australian victory. but we must know, this weak aus team very bad. dead, spinning indian pitch. i donot agree this team is the better available team.

Posted by CivilGaurav on (May 4, 2013, 14:30 GMT)

While dropping Yuvraj, the selectors forgot one thing - that he is a big match/ big tournament player! His form was awful before the 2011 WC, still somehow got selected and as it turned out that there was no way india could have got the cup if he had not played. His IPL form has never been good - in any of its 6 editions - probably because it is just a glorified and showcased domestic tournament where foreign players are allowed. No one really is giong to lose much sleep over which team wins.

Some indian fans itself commenting indian batsman is not going to play short pitch stuff there Friends we are going to play ODI cricket not Test cricket this time check the players performance last series in england Virat kohli 117, suresh raina 84,Jadeja 78 parthiv patel 95 and dhoni 2 or three fifties!

Finally a good selection by our Selectors. I am impressed by this Selection committee, so far. They have made the tough calls like dropping non-performing Viru, Gauti and Yuvi. They have done a good job in imposing faith in youngsters like Bhuvi and Sir Jadeja. Now only if they can git rid of the elephant in the room - 10dulkar.

M Vijayi again??? This has to b a joke. He can not even find a place in csk. Hail srinivasan. He shd just send csk n TN team as India. Ridiculous. Hope he is a big flop like he always has been barring few matches.

Posted by philipsmgp on (May 4, 2013, 14:22 GMT)

I dont know if the selection is based on the IPL performances. I guess the selection of Vijay,Irfan and Rohit(who will always promise to deliver which he would never) always debatable.Shami did bowl well against pakistan and england. Why has he been dropped May be because he has not done a spectacular job in IPl.But then why is IPL used as a yardstick for performances.

Posted by cricketfan74 on (May 4, 2013, 14:21 GMT)

If Rohit Sharma and M.Vijay is included in the squad then why not Ajinkya Rahane ??

Posted by akasavani on (May 4, 2013, 14:19 GMT)

On pure form, neither Gambhir nor Yuvraj deserve a place in the side. That's about all there is to it. And we need to stop extrapolating to WC 2015 every time a team is selected to represent India. That tournament is still 2 years away and that's a long time in cricketing cycles these days.

Posted by cricdick on (May 4, 2013, 14:19 GMT)

Very good move by picking up Dinesh Karthik into the team...He is in good form not only in IPL and also in recent domestic level test matches. He should play test matches in up coming series for India.

Should have consider Utappa/Gambir inpalce of M Vijay CSK (5): MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Suresh Raina, M Vijay,Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin SRH (3): Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma RCB (2) : Virat Kohli, Vinay Kumar MI (2) : Dinesh Karthik (wk), , Rohit Sharma, , DD (2) : Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, PW (1) : Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 14:05 GMT)

one of the worst squad selected by the selectors.yuvi is one of the most consistent performer for team india in this format .he is the only player who performs better for the national team than his ipl team unlike others especially dhoni.i have seen some people saying saying that yuvi can't get his position for granted but i want to tell those people that even ashwin and vijay can't get their position for granted bcoz both of them haven't performed much in the ipl. if we look at the current stats then bhajji and mandeep singh both have done better than these players in this years ipl so they should be picked ahead of them.At last i hope that india should lose all their matches in ct so that selectors can realise their mistake

Badluck Ajinkya Rahane, beyond him I think good selection in all.

"So far, a fifth of IPL 2013's sixes have been hit off Dinda."

just over 400 sixes have been hit.. Dinda hasn't gone for 80 sixes..

Posted by Princepurple1979 on (May 4, 2013, 13:54 GMT)

I dont understand all the opposition shown towards Vijay's inclusion. He was one of the top scorers in the just concluded Australia series. And he is also a guy who can score fast. With his ability combined with the recent form what harm is in trying him? Yuvraj & Gauti has been totally off color for a long time and their omission is totally justifiable. Finally the selectors have been freed from the octopus hold of Sachin on the opening slot, and they seem to be enjoying the challenge seeing these selection decisions. Now only if they get the same freedom in test matches also!!

Murali Vijay shouldn't be in the squad.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

Murali VIjay proved his class in tests against australia. Most important thing for a batsman in cricket is to stay on the crease and I am pretty sure that he can do that well.Runs will come easily if they stay on wicket.Only Question is wheter he can handle the swing there or not.If Moises Henriques,Peter Siddle and Mitch Starc can handle spinning conditions in India, then why can't Vijay. If he stays there 70-80 balls,he can easily make 50 to 60 runs and it will be quite handy because all we need is good start. We have excellent Finisher who can accelerate the run rate at will. Not to Forget we have an attacking opener like Shikhar Dhawan. If they can adjust themselves to thr condition,it will be a deadly combo for sure.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 13:45 GMT)

yuvi should be main player in india, so they have to add in team. its very very hard to win match without three main start like Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahan. three of are played in english pitch. they have add new player. i think english pitch different from indian pitch so they have to add least two outof three playe. dropping Yuvraj Singh bad move...

Posted by anton_ego on (May 4, 2013, 13:40 GMT)

Some of the players not included: Batsmen: Gambhir, Sehwag, Rahane, M Tiwary, Uthappa, Pujara All-rounder: Yuvraj, Yusuf Bowlers: Zaheer, Bhajji, Ojha, Dinda, RP Singh, Sreesanth, P Kumar, Munaf Keeper: Parthiv Patel, W Saha. All these players have represented India before and have done well to warrant a place in the team. There is a captain, enough batsmen, bowlers and keepers. What this shows is that we can field 2 internationally competitive teams for any global ICC tournament. Time to think of 2 Indian teams, India-1 and India-2..?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 13:30 GMT)

Great decision but like many selections not out of flaws and bias. Rahane in place of Vijay should have been the right decision.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 13:27 GMT)

Vijay and dhawan selection is based on the test series batting more than ipl which makes sense for English conditions. Additional leg spinner is good. English Mid wicket boundaries and cover boundaries are long, this is better for leggie Amit. I am more worried about bowling.. the pace. We would have benefitted both from pace and swing. Sadly we don't have both together...

Posted by SachinRao on (May 4, 2013, 13:27 GMT)

murali vijay ¿? even after shrikanth csk legacy continues. rayudu or even gambhir deserved a spot over him. in the bowling praveen kumar shd have been selected in place of either vinay kumar or irfan pathan. he wd make deadly opening pair in english conditons with bhuvi. rest a very good balanced squad.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 13:26 GMT)

I guess team selection was poor. Batting may collapse in England unless they make flat pitches. I guess India will loose series badly.

Posted by ashywinner on (May 4, 2013, 13:23 GMT)

Vijay has not done enough to get selected to be honest, Rahane would have been ideal replacement.

Wish we had another as a back up for Irfan.

As long as yuvraj plays cricket if he his not there is Indian team, India will never win a major tournament,if not just see India in champion trophy which we share with Sri Lank, 20-20 world cup or one day world cup.

For those who have been commenting that Vijay deserves a place in Indian squad after the Australia series ,yes he does but in the TEST SQUAD .Not in the 20/20 SQUAD .Hes not even in the Chennai 20/20 playing squad any more leave alone being selected to play for India .seriously do people posting here even understand that there is a difference between test cricket and 20/20 cricket .

A very good squad picked by selection panel.. My starting XI against SA would be: Dhawan, Vijay, Kohli, Karthik, Raina, Dhoni, Irfan, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Umesh, Ishant... Karthik could be replaced by Rohit and Irfan could be replaced by jaddu depending on their form and playing conditions... Cheers!!

Posted by Prawi5 on (May 4, 2013, 13:21 GMT)

Don't you guys ever give a chance to Ambati Rayudu? Who could be a batting All-rounder & back up Wicket Keeper.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 13:20 GMT)

This is not that big a surprise that Yuvraj and gambhir are dropped given their recent performances. And as far as the players selected is concerned, I'm pretty happy to see the 15. Only thing that i'm not too pleased about is Murali Vijay's selection as he's having a horrendous IPL and i'm not sure if he'd be able to face the new ball comfortably in England with ample swing. He was tried and tested against South Africa a couple of years ago in Odi Series and failed miserably against Steyn and co. I know he's coming from a fabulous test series against Aussies but he's not a Virat Kohli or an M.S. Dhoni whom we trust blindly. I'd have gone for Rahane anyway instead of Vijay. Bowling attack looks pretty decent though until and unless injury prone Umesh Yadav or Irfan Pathan breaks down again.

Posted by vimal03 on (May 4, 2013, 13:17 GMT)

I think this team has been selected according to the IPL performance and i don't think that the way to choose a team for the international tournament. Especially India is a poor team outside Asia. I cant see any fear factors in India team (Yuvraj / Sewage). So a non Indian supporter i think India will defiantly not going make to the semis.

dropping yuvi before vijay , nohit , mishra, ishant and raina is farcical to say the least. yuvi can win matches on his own like he did in 4 back to back mom awards and man of series in wc 2011. he is best allrounder in the world and why select nohit or vinay ahead of him. on present form even mandeep singh have better claim to opening slot than vijay, he is poorest indian domestic opener in odis and t20. plz drop him , if possible now.

GG hasn't done too badly, though he was getting on my nerves when he was throwing harsh words at Dravid yesterday :D

From this team, Mishra, Vinay, & DK are surely gonna warm the benches more often than not... Pitch will decide whom to pick between SRJ and Pathan (pathan likely to sit out most of the times)...

All in all, don't expect too much from these lads... If they can get through the first phase with a sngle win, that should be considered a good result

Posted by tmp789 on (May 4, 2013, 13:04 GMT)

Pretty good selection except for Pujara being left out without a game.

The best decision was to drop Ashok Dinda. The worst bowler I have seen at international level, not even fit to play for minnows. THe problem with Dinda is his run up and action. Which fast bowler jumps that way to deliver the ball and to top it delivers the fall at the wrong time.

People questioning Vijay's place, should recollect his performance against Aussies. He was my Man of the series(Not Ashwin!) because we recently had bowlers to pick wickets but not batsman to pile up the 500+ score..

If the argument is, that was tests and CT is ODI, Then Dhawan also dont deserve a place.

Good Young Balanced squad, All we need is the inspiration and some luck & form.. Go India Go..

Posted by AravindxD on (May 4, 2013, 13:01 GMT)

This was the very same response from most people at the start of recently concluded India-Australia test , why Vijay ?? But he went out to become the leading run scorer for India in that test.. so have patience guys , u will never know he may go out and do the same again . Vijay is far better than Rayudu . Dinesh was mostly selected becuz of his domestic odi and ipl form , vijay was selected becuz of his fine performance against Aussies . To all those who are saying this is a CSK base team , these guys had performed well in the domestic circuit and the series against Aussies even before that and are in good formand also Badrinath who is consistent run scorer every domestic season has never got a satisfying run as Rohit sharma . so think before u comment . See the selection everyone in that team is in good form and vijay might do well in international level. He is big match player. espn cricinfo pls publish

Posted by crick_wizard on (May 4, 2013, 13:01 GMT)

Not sure what Murali Vijay has done to justify his inclusion in the team and not sure why Rahane, who has a better ODI average and performed well during the last England tour, was not considered in his place. Also leaving out Yuvraj Singh could be a big mistake. He is not having a great IPL, but he is a totally different player in India colors can be crucial in big match situations. I feel he still has a lot to contribute to Indian cricket, especially in ODIs. I think he is being left out in order to play Jadeja in the team.

Posted by dabbler on (May 4, 2013, 12:59 GMT)

Im ok with this squad except for the selection of M Vijay .Why ruin his test career by selecting him for ODIs when he clearly is not suited for ODIs.hes been dropped from the Chennai Super Kings squad as well from their playing eleven leave alone playing for India .I would have preferred Uthappa who is in good form or ANYONE ELSE.The selection of Vijay is so bizarre it makes me wonder if there is nepotism involved .

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 12:57 GMT)

Mohit Sharma should have been in the squad in place of Mishra considering his current form & overcast english conditions. The best playing 11 would be Dhawan, Rohit, Virat, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Irfan, Umesh, Bhuvi, Ishant, Vinay.

Posted by CricketFan1980 on (May 4, 2013, 12:56 GMT)

Vijay given a lifeline here given his performance in the test series against Australia, despite his woeful form in Ranji / IPL. Karthik is a good selection. He should open with Dhawan. I remember Karthik scoring a 90 odd in a test in England when Dravid was captain. Hopefully he will dig deep and make use of this opportunity. Also, they do not have to select all pace bowlers just because the games are in England. Cardiff usually assists turn; Oval has bounce and Edgbaston is the only venue with some assistance to seam. It always swings in England when there is cloud cover. So Irfan is a good selection; Ishant - not so much. Good luck.

Murali Vijay performs occasionally provided he is dressed in yellow or white and that too in Indian conditions. Overseas conditions and dressed in blue is not going to help his cause.

Posted by pavang on (May 4, 2013, 12:49 GMT)

I cannot understand this. What has Rohit Sharma done to be in squad?? If Yuvraj is not given a chance why are they persisting with Rohit Sharma?

Posted by Rumy1 on (May 4, 2013, 12:45 GMT)

WHAT HAS M.VIJAY DONE IN ONE YEAR TO GET A PLACE IN ODI SIDE. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. WHEN WILL SELECTORS BE SELECTORS AND NOT ORDER TAKERS. If current IPL form was the criterion behind Amit Mishra (which is fine) then Ashwin and Jadeja shouldn't have found a place. On current form- based on 40+ IPL matches thus far Harbhajan Singh has looked the best Indian offspinner but Ashwin got the nod. Thanks again to Dhoni & BCCI Chief's presumed influence on selectors if not anything else. Jadeja should also thank these two (again) for his place in the team. Else what has Jadeja done in the current IPL thus far. If his recent Test exploits with bowling on dusty crumbling Indian turning tracks was the criterion then maybe selectors still have some hopes that ECB will prepare tracks to help blokes like Jadeja. Without turning tracks, both Ashwin and Jadeja are club level bowlers who can bat a bit. Nothing more than that. Best swing bowler in English conditions Praveen Kr has been left out...no wonder

Posted by NP_NY on (May 4, 2013, 12:45 GMT)

Not sure dropping Yuvi is a good idea. Sure, he's not been performing in the IPL but he performs well more often than not when playing for India. And he lends more balance to the side with his part-time bowling. DK on the other hand performs better in the IPL than he does when he plays for India.

I guess the only reason behind the inclusion of Vijay would be to see how he performs in swinging, seaming conditions. Vijay had an extraordinary Aus series and should by all means retain a spot in tests come SA, but his overseas record along with his technique (doesn't move foot early in the innings and usually play away from the body) don't inspire confident. Admittedly pitches in Eng will be nothing like he will face in Cape town but If he performs in Eng it can put selectors in a comfortable position, and if he fails they might contemplate recall of Gambhir, Sehwag for at least Ind A tour.

Posted by realfan on (May 4, 2013, 12:43 GMT)

i think the playing 11 will be... dhawan( to give him some experience for SA tour) vijay ( same reason, but i think he fails , if he fails then karthik) kohli ( cant keep him out ) raina ( again cant keep him out ) jadeja ( alrounder, who can trouble batsmen who doesn't know spin bowling, and can control runs and can score, can become finisher) dhoni( you cant complain) Irfan( he is perfect alrounder for india in England conditions, he gets some swing and can contribute with bat as well) ashwin( cant replace him) buvaneshwar( i think he will trouble top order batsmen with his swing ) yadav( he seems like he is improved ) ishant( personally i don't want him to play , team manger don't dare to select vinay kumar ahead of ishant, so our number 11 is ishant and useless)

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 12:43 GMT)

Reasonably the best team has been selected . How it can perform in English conditions is always a matter of doubt. The only way India can attempt to improve abroad will be to REGULARLY SEND INDIA 'A' teams abroad at least twice every year in which BCCI has failed miserably.

Posted by insightfulcricketer on (May 4, 2013, 12:39 GMT)

Crafty Dhoni has his way. For a player with limited to zero skills when pitch has something for bowlers has gotten his way by eliminating contenders to his captaincy. Vijay as an ODI player-ha.The bugger cannot keep his eyes open when the ball gets to waist high.Karthik ,Ashwn ,Dinda and Dhawan in the team bring tears to my eyes that the selectors have sold their soul to Srinivasan - the fans be damned. I will be happy if this team gets their backs whipped in this high stakes tournament. Sadly for Srinivasan putting poorly equipped favorites does not ensure great results putting players who take pride in their performances do.Kohli watch out lungi-wallahs are going to get to you too eventually.

Posted by lvcric on (May 4, 2013, 12:36 GMT)

I think this best team that India can have at the moment and has the potential to win the trophy. I would have like to see Chateshwar Purjara in the lineup though. In england you need batsman with good technique and CP has that. Still it is good to see that the selectors have gone for form ahead of popularity. Though we all love to see Viru, Yuti and Gauti in the team, they have not done enough to prove their worth in the recent past, so its a tough call. This team is young and will want to prove themselves and make a name for themselves, which is a good thing for India. Most of them do have experience playing in English conditions and it will not be a first time for most of them. They have made mistakes in the past and would have learnt something from that. The challenge would be to do perform well against the top 3 teams SA, Eng and Aus. Pak is a dark horse and they can be more than a handful in english conditions.

Will lose this plot definitely... Can't understand supporting Viay... He will by far a big failure for sure.. Karthik trying to fill the shoes of Yuvi... Can't under this... Jadeja in England, Please stop kidding... Hoping for a first round return..After all post to IPL players do need rest.. They will get it after returning from Eng soon.

What?? Rohit,Vinay picked again.why?Yuvraj drop is ok.Shami n Rayudu needded t be picked

Posted by arjnay2909 on (May 4, 2013, 12:29 GMT)

Vijay and pathan are questionable selections- should have given gambhir, binny or shammi ahmed a chance instead. but out of these guy the 11 should be- Dhawan,Kathik, kohli, rohit sharma,raina,MSD(c/wk),sir jadeja, ashwin, bhuvi kumar, ishant sharma, umesh yadav

Posted by Charlie101 on (May 4, 2013, 12:27 GMT)

Gamhbir has been found out on green tops by the Aussie and English pace bowlers and it will not take long for the WI to take advantage as well so it is a wise decision to drop him him . I always think Yuvraj's bowling is a huge asset for India and thought he may have got an allrounder's spot but I guess you have Jadeja as well.

Based on our weather at the moment which is warm and wet the pitches will be green tops .

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 12:26 GMT)

great bit of selection by the selectors! just a few hours back, i had condemned the possibility of yuvraj being included...now ishant sharma needs to be benched...the pace attack should comprise of bhuvi, umesh and irfan- bhuvi and irfan will get ample amount of swing and umesh will take care of the death bowling with his pace and reverse swing! vinay kumar will also serve as a decent back up bowler... for heaven sake do not select ishant in the 11! the batting line up looks really impressive!

Gambhir should been considered bcos one senior player required in the opening. And why they not considered Shami ahmed? Amit Misra even though he performed well in IPL is luxurious in England.

Good Selection ............. Team India Gudluk

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 12:14 GMT)

Expect picking Vijay it looks like a fair selection. What wrong did Manoj Tiwary did? He has performed every time he was picked. Should have been picked. Ok if selectors needed a opener instead of Gambhir they could have retained Rahane. He performed well in his previous outing to England. He deserved a chance. While Rohit Sharma is given a thousand chances to prove why not to Rahane or M Tiwary?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 12:10 GMT)

The Reasons for each player in the squad[acc. to me] 1. Gambhir : Excluded because of poor run in the IPL and also previous ODI's. Isnt a youngster. | 2. Yuvraj : Poor Run in IPL, indifferent form after cancer. Fielding also affected. | 3.Vijay : Good form in tests against Australia. Is a Youngster. | 4. Dhawan : Good Form. Scoring lots of runs in domestic as well as IPL. Also the 187 against Australia on Test Debut. Is a Youngster. | 5. Rohit Sharma : In Excellent form in IPL as well as Domestic. Very Talented. Youngster. Good Fielding.

My XI : Dhawan, Karthik, Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Raina, Pathan, Jadeja, Ashwin, B.Kumar, Yadav.

Posted by caught_knott_bowled_old on (May 4, 2013, 12:09 GMT)

Yuvraj's international career seems to be done and dusted. His form is indifferent, he's slow between the wickets and slow on the field. He's not the force he was 3-4 years ago. Gambhir is simply too divisive and doesn't fit in with the team ethos. Plus, his form has been nothing to write home about. What we've witnessed is the phasing in of the next generation of team India. I expect Dhawan and Vijay/Rohit to open; although I'd have preferred if Vijay was kept for Test matches. He's not really a natural ODI player; but then again he might as well gain the experience of playing quality swing bowling in English conditions. We'll find out soon enough.

WOW-this selection committee looks like the bold ones like say from Australia or England....WOW I never expected to be surprised by Indian selectors or respect them. MrPatil has proved why we need people like him leading the Indian cricket. All the decisions are sound and based on Cricketing standards than past performance or other flimsy logic that Indian fans has been used too. WOW .....

as a srilankan fan really pleased to see this team of india .but i dont think it will matter much to us because i cant see india going to the semis with this team.team looks really weak both in batting as well as in bowling.it will be a great acheivement for india if they can somehow win a single game.cricinfo please publish.

Dear Sir, Totally disappointing by these team selection . The selectors not giving Chances to Cheteshwarpujara , Manoj Tiwari, Ajinkya. And the Dashing Hero Virendra Shewag

Posted by YogifromNY on (May 4, 2013, 11:58 GMT)

For the first time in my memory of following Indian cricket closely for the past thirty years, the selectors are being lauded for their team selection. Excellent squad selection, and as Amit Seth said, they have (correctly) gone for form over the big names. If the Indian selectors regularly drop even established players who are not performing, it will ensure that the team does not carry passengers for any tour or tournament. Go India!

Posted by landl47 on (May 4, 2013, 11:57 GMT)

Let's be honest, there's nothing much there for the rest of the world to fear in English conditions. India's ability to bowl and bat in spinning conditions isn't going to help them much and neither the batsmen nor the bowlers picked have any great record of success outside the subcontinent.

I'm looking forward to see Dhawan and Kohli bat, but I can't see India troubling the better teams in the tournament.

Posted by Jimi01 on (May 4, 2013, 11:55 GMT)

I dont think it matters who's in Indias squad since none of them can play outside India. India will fail in this series.

India team which is selected for the trophy is not bad.i think yuvi should have been picked up and rohit sharma should be dropped.batting lineup is very strong.bowing line up very good with irfan and bhuvi openning.

CSK Mohit Sharma also will be gud choice.

Posted by Mohd123 on (May 4, 2013, 11:45 GMT)

The selected team looks balanced, by considering the opener's slot, they would have looked into Mandeep Singh, Unmukt Chand and bowling department Dhawal Kulkarni. Selected team is good in all department of cricket.

Posted by siddhartha87 on (May 4, 2013, 11:45 GMT)

Bold decision really.Yuvi really doesn't deserve place.Exclusion of Gambhir surprises me.He was doing a descent job(800 plus run last year,2nd among Indians after Kohli). Why Rohit Sharma is still in the team? He has scored 253 runs @ 17.00 since Jan2012. Selection of Dinesh Karthik is an absolute joke.A proven failure at international level.

Posted by vishnu.varrier on (May 4, 2013, 11:44 GMT)

Inclusion of irfan, vinay, mishra is good addittion, but rohit and vijay?? Gambir or even rahane is bettar option than him, rohit sharma included in last series because of manoj tiwary is injured, and again manoj ignored how cruel it is, he has been perfomed well in his last international series. Disappointment for him, if he scores a double hundred in odi he cannot secure a place in team. Is IPL form is the criteria for selection why select vijay?

Posted by Sundara-Chandare on (May 4, 2013, 11:44 GMT)

Good choice for Yuvraj.Because atleast he can't protect his head in these conditions.World know he is a demon slogger. And sorry for dhoni. You are the finisher for only flat roads. And selectors are blind about ipl performance.Because is vinay kumar a good bowler?Yes he has taken wickets because his lucky.Batsmens try to clear the fence for his bpwling and unfortunatley they couldn't middle it.So it's convert to a catch. And Rohit,Raina are just IPL heroes.Anyway lets see....

Murali Vijay was the TOP SCORER in the recent India-Aus series- both teams considered. If IPL should not be considered, then there is nothing wrong in Vijay's selection.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:39 GMT)

why murali vijay in champion cup,he is better than yuvi and ghambir.yuvi is also a parttime bowler.

Posted by street_smart on (May 4, 2013, 11:39 GMT)

Where is Manoj Tiwary? Why Murali Vijay?

Posted by NKuthalingam on (May 4, 2013, 11:36 GMT)

Finally selectors made a very good selection!! No matter whether VIRU OR Gauti if the players didnt perform well let them stay from the team to learn mistakes. India has enough of quality players to play for Indian cricket...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:36 GMT)

Rohit and Vijay why? Vijay did not perform in IPL. Rohit has wasted lot of time of Indian Cricket!!!

Rhane was good choice but I do not think BCCI is a good group.

They can earn money, but can not judge good talent.

In fast bowling area, they should try Mohit Sharma.

Posted by guruprakash7 on (May 4, 2013, 11:32 GMT)

In future indian team will be changed to CSK team....rohit sharma will also included on it....even he scored in single digits in all the matches...and i'm surprised of dhoni why u didn't select JAKATI as he performed well in last ipl season...

Posted by Romenevans on (May 4, 2013, 11:30 GMT)

Awesome squad! The biggest plus of this team is that now every egoistic player is shown the door. This team will play under MSD superbly. Really happy to see Gambhir thrown out, well deserved.

Posted by Yasassri on (May 4, 2013, 11:30 GMT)

Gambir perform well over Rohith Sharma in recent ODI's. Selection panel must expliain that.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:28 GMT)

Irfan, Umesh and Vinay Kumar are not a good choice at all. Irfan has lost his swing and his batting is no longer the same either. Umesh honestly struggles to keep the ball at one line and length and Vinay Kumar is also over rater. They may get some wickets on seamer friendly wickets but may not be match winner. Performance of B.Kumar would be the key to India's success.

Posted by VJGS on (May 4, 2013, 11:24 GMT)

@Ashootosh Bhardwaj Pujara is down with injury. Please read the article more closely. But you are right to be confused with the selection of M.Vijay. I also cannot understand Rohit Sharma's selection. Dhawan and Karthik would have made good openers. Kohli and Raina can make up the middle order, followed by Dhoni, Jadeja and Pathan in the lower middle.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:23 GMT)

Dropping Yuvi,Gambhir is not a good decision.Vijay is not at all replacement to these guys. I think we are going pay a penalty in champions trophy.

Given the conditions in England, India should tell all the reserve players be ready for joining the team at any point. An array of Short pitched balls aiming at your body line is going to flow in. Now tell me selectors, who all in your this fab 15 has the technique to play shot pitch balls. All are referring to the IPL show, dear its in Indian Pitches, where a six feet tall batsman has to be on his knees to hit a good length delivery. So lets wait and see, who all are going to be surviving the swing & pace of England pitches. Requesting India's coaching staff to give our players sessions of bowling machines with short pitched deliveries.. else we will read in the same media that lions of home conditions became scapegoats at english soil...

I don't understand why selectors selected M.Vijay leaving match winner yuvi. when it comes to major tournaments yuvi plays major role. everybody knows it except selectors. Lucky Rohit sharma still getting chances to represent India even though he his in poor form. Whether M.Vijay got selected because of Dhoni or Selectors wants to impress Dhoni by selecting M.Vijay, Lets not forget the BCCI president Sreenivasan who is also from Chennai as M.Vijay.

Bhuvi and Irfan opening together with the new ball.. The two best swing bowlers of Indian Cricket.. followed by Ashwin, Vinay Kumar, Ishant.. You see experience and youth in the bowling attack.. Nice team picked, though Rahane should have been there.. THIS HAS TO BE ROHIT SHARMA'S LAST CHANCE.. Hope this drop serves Gambhir a wake up call.. Its quite a good team picked otherwise.. :D

Posted by young_ind on (May 4, 2013, 11:19 GMT)

I am really annoyed at ppl who have no talent spotting abilities complaining about vijay's selection.obviously they have not learnt their lessons from the austraian series when both vijay and dhawan were questioned. its obvious to any decent judge that vijay possess a high level of talent.A quality player has to be backed to adapt to all forms of the game. on what basis is the craze for rahane? as if rahane is the one who thrashed australia for 430 runs. in fact he bottled in his debut badly.i am forr rayudu or rahane getting a chance at different time. but they are not highly superior to vijay or anything.its good to give dhawan and vijay a long run for now. they have expanded their game beautifully. others can wait their turn. The bowling however is a mistake.only one among the less quicker swing bowlers is needed. that bowler is bk. its a huge mistake to play pk/irfan or irafn/vinay in the same game. no real pace and batsmen have a jolly good time after 7-10 overs.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:18 GMT)

Gambhir deserves to be dropped... he is in such a poor form.. didn't perform well in the last two home series.. a complete flop show.. and his on field behaviour has gone worse.. should use his time for some anger management course. he should learn to respect legends like DRAVID.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:18 GMT)

But for Murli Vijay's selection, the rest of the team selected fit the boot for this tournament in England. Irfan will be the one to watch along with Bhuvi. No regrets about Sehwag,Gambhir and Yuvraj not being selected.Time to shake off the dust and move on ahead. This is a national team and not a regional team.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 11:18 GMT)

Agree with the team selection except: Rohit Sharma and Amit Mishra! Amit Mishra seems to be a poor fielder dropping important sitters at crunch times in the game!!

I dont think he a g..ood enough player to be in playing eleven though he has impressed with his big heart .Dinesh karthik will perform not sure of consistency ,but there will be one good innings .Isanth i dont knw sometimes he looks listless .Any however

1.karthik,2.dhawan,3.kholi,4.raina,5.rohit,6.dhoni,7.ashwin ,8.Jadeja/isanth,9.Irfan,10.umesh,11.bhuni,--May make it...best of luck .Mirsha,M.viay,Vinay will not make the playing 11

Finally a satisfying squad by Indian Selectors after a while now, with not much questions. Exclusion of Yuvraj is a surprise, as far as I remember he has never performed well in IPL, if they are considering only his IPL run. He'll surely be back into the Indian Team, we know he's not a quitter. M.Vijay's U-Turn as a Solid Batsmen rather than a striking batsman has made him lose his place in CSK, but earned him place in Indian Team. Karthik should always be there in the squad anytime, he is definitely the country's second best keeper. Shikar Dhawan has got to fill-in the big shoes of Virendar Sehwag, more would be expected out of him. If you're sending an Indian Team to a swinging bowling condition Irfan and Bhuvaneswar are automatic choice, with some pace of Umesh. Ashwin and Jadeja will fit into the Spin and if there would ever be a need of spinning variety , India might drop Jadeja to give room for Amit. Overall a Solid Team, they should reach semis atleast.

Gautam should not been dropped. Selectors again sticking with M Vijay and Dhawan. We have to wait & see how this would work. They have to play in England not in India. Come on we need a senior player in the team!!!

Wow!! totally strange basis of inclusion/exclusion : Vijay IN : Outstandingly super Test performance (not to forget that was at home and team is going to England) and Outstandingly flop IPL performance Sharma IN : Superb IPL performance and Miserable ODI form Gambhir OUT : Sober if not super Ipl form and better ODI form than Mr. Noodles Karthick IN : Orange Cap holder in IPL in quite a few matches and Water bottle holder in ODI's that too , unfortunately, in quite a few matches Rahane OUT : Average IPL form; and ODI form which is mystery for him too as he has been warming the bench ever since he is injected into the team after wonderful IPL5 show Yuvi OUT : the worstest decision, I felt, coz i don't know what worse has he done in International format than Mr.Noodles or what worse has he done in IPL than Mr.Bansuri Vijay.

Posted by SanjivAwesome on (May 4, 2013, 10:58 GMT)

We are stretching it a bit if we call Vinay a "pace bowler". At best, he is a gentle, harmless trundler and batsmen in England will feast on his bowling.

for god sake, why the hell is rohit sharma in the team and ishanth sharma and vinay kumar and jadeja and vijay... they all given unbearing chances... this guys shud be playing only IPL... i pray that this team loses very badly

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:56 GMT)

Look this is the best team selected based on the current performance and form. Eavery one knows Yuvi played well in WC, but today he is not playing well enough to deserve a place in Indian team

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:56 GMT)

Well Well Well... What Cheteshwar Pujara has done wrong? He is far more technically sound than Murli Vijay or anyone else in Team. People should not forget what value Rahul Dravid brought in Indian ODI Team. Pujara is the right option to replace him. IPL should never be the criteria to pick players for India ODI Team.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:55 GMT)

Yuvraj , Gambhir out ?

Guess Dhoni doesnt want anyone senior than him , so he can do whatever he wants :D

Biggest comedy , Murali Vijay ? Rahane out ?

CLAPS CLAPS

I have simple question.. What is the base criteria for a player to get selected in to the Team? IPL or domestic circuit?

I am not against any selection.. But want to know, on what basis Karthik, Rohit, Mishra included? On what basis Yuvraj is dropped?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:54 GMT)

this selection/ article almost gives reasons fro dropping almost all except Shami Ahmed...is there is any specific reason for dropping him...i do wonder as i felt he was a good prospect and boweld well in his last outings...strange...!!!!

Posted by realfan on (May 4, 2013, 10:54 GMT)

@Yasi Yas rahane got lot of time and nothing came??? when did they last time gave him to bat??? some odd game in a series especially when others play, remember he was picked into squad for almost 5 years back and he just got 16 matches, where as NO(RO)HIT sharma got like 100 matches....judge the talent by their performance when continues chances are given, not when they replace for someone else....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:54 GMT)

I dont understand the reason behind picking MURALI VIJAY??? he s a performer of subcontinental pitches only!!! Also surprised with the newss of dropping YUVI and GG YUVI adds a lot of balance to the Middle order I just want MV stay apart from playingxl,DK will be a right choice to open But still i say we are a lot lot away from lifting the cup

Posted by roversgate on (May 4, 2013, 10:53 GMT)

Replace Rohit Sharma with Gambhir and Vijay with Yuvraj and you have got a good squad. I know people are aiming for Gambhir's exclusion but his form in limited overs isn't too bad and he has experience in these places. His replacement as Vijay is a poor move, the guy never adjusted to ODIs before and should only be given opportunities in tests and T20s until he solidifies his place. Rohit Sharma once again finds his way to a squad he doesn't belong to. when are the selectors going to realize that Sharma DOES NOT belong in ODIs. Put him in tests or t20s and see what he does if you are determined to give him a chance but spare us the torture of seeing him in one dayers.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:53 GMT)

whats wrong with the selectors, why gambhir & Yuvi specialist for 505-50 format is not in the team he is in fine form, this is because of dhoni, this not fair

Posted by sharidas on (May 4, 2013, 10:53 GMT)

Hats off to the selectors. The Selectors under Sandip Patil have been very fair in their assessment and selection. This was evident earlier in their selection of the Test team as well. Though we might feel sorry for the dropping of some players. I am sure the dropped players themselves will agree that the selection has been based on current form.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:53 GMT)

The message from selectors is clear - seniors cannot hang on to their spots based on past reputation. And that makes for a welcome change. However, as in any selection process, this one too has peculiarities. And hence the scope for disagreements! Irfan Pathan has done nothing spectacular to earn a recall, for instance. Why Ishant Sharma retains his place is difficult to understand, as is the case with Vinay Kumar, whose inclusion is baffling. Vijay and Sir Jadeja have the weight of recent performances behind them, so its difficult to question their inclusion. But by giving another chance to Rohit Sharma to show how he will continue to waste his immense talent the selectors have given another opportunity to the fans to tear their hair out of frustration.

Posted by sandyforcricket on (May 4, 2013, 10:51 GMT)

Team selection is good but I would like to suggest one change ....Rahane for vijay...it will complete this squad....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:50 GMT)

The Team is Looking Good on Paper. But ,

With almost very little Experienced players - ( i meant "ALMOST VERY LITTLE") Dreams of winning te champions trophy will remain a dream.

Moreover , For those who say that we've give chances to youngsters -- This is not the right time to play a new team afresh which can be strategically weak excluding the fact called DHONI , who many a times bring them together.

But..., If this trial succeeds - INDIA will have a strong 2015 world cup side.

Bottomline : Still not the best time for the "Hit & Trial Method".

Posted by champ1388 on (May 4, 2013, 10:50 GMT)

Pathetic, why has Pujara been not selected without getting a game? what wrong has Yuvraj done? what good has Vinay Kumar done, how does Rohit Sharma get a chance after umpteen number of failures? Indian team was whitewashed in England, when they last played ODI's there. They should be prepared for an early exit with no experience in the top order. They should remember these are not going to be flat Indian wickets, they will be be humiliated and Dhoni should be sacked after that from captaincy and Virat Kohli should be made the Captain.

Posted by realfan on (May 4, 2013, 10:48 GMT)

i would prefer dinesh karthik over vijay or rohit anytime. my squad will be

dhawan, karthik, kohli, raina, jadeja, dhoni, pathan, ashwin, vinay, bhuvaneshwar, umesh.....

no place for vijay, ishant, rohit....and i cant replace anyone with mishra ( sorry for that) ..... and good move by selectors by not selecting gambir, yuvraj, harbajan, sehwag, .... fans should understand that even if these guys were selected they cant hang around till 2015 world cup, so i think this team is for 2015 world cup....

but still ROHIT, ISHANT, VIJAY???? whom i want to replace with these guys are RAHANE, TIWARI, SHAMI AHMED.....

and i think vinay kumar is good inclusion, he should be groomed for the death overs.... he dont have pace, but still he is consistent in his line....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:47 GMT)

Best Team right now. Yuvi will be back once he is fit.11 should be 1)Dhawan 2)Karthik 3)Kohli 4)Rohit 5)Dhoni 6)Raina 7)Pathan 8)Ashwin 9)bhuvanesh 10)Ishant 11)Yadav.....Vijay is not a good selection..he wont play in the 11 anyway...

Posted by Cricket_Is_Oxygen on (May 4, 2013, 10:46 GMT)

Rohit Sharma.Murali Vijay. That too in swinging and seaming conditions.. Absolutely Ridiculous.Agreed with Dinesh Karthik for a back up wicket keeper.. Thats a little harsh on Shami.. He has bowled well in batting friendly conditions against england. His economy is just 4.5 which is not bad for a new comer.. May be he should replace Vinay kumar in the squad.Just because he is contention for the purple cap that does'nt mean he is a good bowler..He has nothing.. He bowls just around the 130k mark,he cant move the ball either.Even a praveen kumar is good considering the conditions in england.. Not sure for what the third spinner is? May be all rounder or a Even a another seamer would have been a good selection.THE BIGGEST THING: WHAT'S WRONG WITH YUVI?? YUVI IS GOOD BOWLER THAN RAVINDRA JADEJA IN ODI'S AND A MATCH WINNING BATSMAN.Thank god for not picking Piyush & Sreesanth..My word.. Not sure how good is Dhawan in alien conditions.Overall its a team with a little of experience & experiment

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:46 GMT)

A well balanced side with a pool of players available & in form at the moment. One needs to have the skills to face quality swing bowling, hook or pull well and bowl a nagging foolish length consistently in english summer condition. At the beginning of summer spinner will hardly get any purchase there unless you are an intelligent leggie. Exclusion of Yuvi is a bit of surprise to me. He might not be fully fit at the moment to play in ODIs. Selectors will know better. But he has been a real X factor for India over the years in big occasions. Hope some new face does the job this time for India...in England teams with quality bowling unit always get the success. Most of the pitches will produce 250 to 270 scores which are good totals to defend there. Chasing under lights is really tough there for sub-continet teams. So my choice for starting XI for the South Africa match would be: SD & MV as openers, VK-DK-SR-MSD in middle order, YP as all rounder, BK-AM-IS-UY as four bowlers.

Posted by Sir.Ivor on (May 4, 2013, 10:45 GMT)

Just as much as the waning of his cricketing skills at the big stage, not the IPL, I think it is good that Gambhir has been dropped for the crude manner he has conducted himself on the field. Team India can do well without such boorish individuals. Yuvraj's dropping is bound to pain folks who are given to emotion as also given his good record in ODIs.But the selectors have been realistic with him.I am not sure if he is physically fit enough for the game yet.Yes maybe in six months he may be ready. The selectors must be congratulated on their selection really.Karthik must come into focus purely as a batsman. He is a brilliant fielder at gully where he has takne some excellent catches. He is very good against the swinging ballas a batsman and has experience playing in England. I would have liked Pujara not just for his solidity as a batsman but for his allround personality as well but then he is yet to recover fully. It is better that he readies himself for the sterner Tests ahead.

Seems good one for me.. My Playing 11 will be Dhawan,karthik,kohli,raina,dhoni,rohit/jadeja,irfan,ashwin/mishra,Bhuvi,vinay,umesh yadav.

Very young side but most of them will be playing in australia in 2015 so thats fair selection!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:41 GMT)

My 11 is Openers: S Dhawan, Dinesh Kartik Middle Order in sequence: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina Al rounders- R Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin Bowlers- Bhuvi, Umesh yadav

In batting department Here we have 4 Pure Batsman, 2 Wicket keepers , 3 bowlers who can bat that sums upto 9 batsman even if you dont count bhuvi

In bowling department we have 2 pure bowlers, 3 bowlers who ball their full quote who can still bat and Part timers like Virat, Rohit and Raina And we have different variance in bowling 2 seam bowlers one right handed and second left handed. Third Fast bowler is Umesh yadav who can bowl and bowl at death then one left arm spinner one right arm off spinner.

All in all a complete and the most balanced side i have seen in recent times

Posted by guruprakash7 on (May 4, 2013, 10:41 GMT)

Well done! Dhoni, once you came to indian team. If anyone has ability to be a next captain, u'll send them out team even not considered in squad. 1.Shewag, 2.Harbajan, 3. Yuvraj, 4.Gambir(won all the 5 matches those he is as a captain), 5.???????????????????????? I am sure that your next target will be????....Plz god save VIRAT KHOLI....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:41 GMT)

Praveen Kumar instead of Vinay Kumar. But, the latter obviously has a godfather. The rest of the squad seems OK.

Posted by realfan on (May 4, 2013, 10:40 GMT)

be what ever you want, but dont be like RAHANE, TIWARY... these guys deserve more chances than VIJAY and ROHIT.....what wrong has rahane done?? may be sitting in bench instead of announcing retirement is the mistake i think....and what wrong has tiwary done? he has score of 50+ and 100+ in last two odi's he performed.... and he has best technique than rohit sharma....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:40 GMT)

Its ridiculous yuvi must be there in the team. Yuvi brought world cup for us, he will play well in tournaments like this..

Posted by TM on (May 4, 2013, 10:39 GMT)

I think they should've give Pujara a chance to open with Dhawan and have chand as back up opener. my team (not all in squad): Pujara Dhawan Kohli Rohit Raina Dhoni Jadeja/Irfan Ashwin Bhuvuneshwar Yadav Vinay

Posted by draravind on (May 4, 2013, 10:39 GMT)

Oh god..... can anybody tell me for what purpose this Rohiit is in the team again and again after this much failure. If he can be included why cant Gambhir, Yuvraj, Tiwary...... I suspect his father might be in selection committee. He must have been replaced by Pujara. He is an asset for Indian team. In the case of Vijay, even if he fails Dinesh Kartik is a good choice for an opener. He is in pretty form now.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:38 GMT)

A very strong Indian side picked by the selectors. My playing 11 would be: 1.M.Vijay 2.Rohit Sharma 3.Dinesh Karthik 4.Virat Kohli 5.Suresh Raina 6.MS Dhoni 7.Irfan Pathan 8.R.Ashwin 9.Bhuvneshwar Kumar 10.Umesh Yadav 11.Ishant Sharma This team has got a very balanced look to it and definitely capable of bringing home the trophy.

i really started to like this selection panel. Excellent decision to kick yuvaraj and gambir out of d team. they didnt considered ipl performances as well (murali vijay). Feel for praveen kumar but bhuvi, irfan, praveen r similar kind of bowlers so no need for 3 of them in d squad.I think gambir should be in IND A visiting SA that should be captained by pujara.

Posted by bijuphilip on (May 4, 2013, 10:36 GMT)

gambir should have been there

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:36 GMT)

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:35 GMT)

first shewag and harbajan..now yuvraj and gambir...very brave selection commity..,india need it...and india missing it before....rahane exclussion also good..bcoz he got lot of time but nothing come ....but sami ahmed why...he bowled well in last series..he did'nt get so many wicket .but he bowl some tity spells.. also why again rohit sharma..we have rayidu, chand ,baba aparijith etc.. dhony need to come 3 or 4 th in batting.. my palaying eleven shoud be.. dhawan , vijay , kohli , dhoni, karthik, raina, aswin, misra,b kumar, yadav, ishanth

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:34 GMT)

I am shocked to see Shami Ahmed being dropped and Vinay Kumar getting a look in. Shami had performed well in the past games and him being dropped doesn't do well for his confidence... Also with his accurate bowling, he would have been a massive asset. We have been dragging Ishant along as well since quite some time now...

Posted by rdr_1019 on (May 4, 2013, 10:33 GMT)

No doubt form is the most important thing when selecting a squad, but dropping Yuvraj from the middle order is a huge mistake. He might not be at his best but all it takes is one good innings and he will be back to business. Good to sse Mishra getting a go again aling with Karthik, but M Vijay for ODI is definitely questionable. I am a die hard fan of Indian Cricket team and especially Yuvraj so I wish them the best but without the stability that Yuvraj gives in the middle order, I don't see Indian making it to the playoffs.

Posted by Surajdon9 on (May 4, 2013, 10:32 GMT)

Patil and team have a level and fearless head on their shoulders They will not be taken in by pressures of any kind. They have gone by performance and not reputation. Kudos to them. Its certain now that the selection for the Tests in SA is similarly fearless and will generate similar, pleasant surprises where performance alone will be the deciding factor Those who are banking on reputation and history will have to think hard now

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:31 GMT)

we need left and right hand combination so only they selected murali vijay if he fails thee is dinesh karthik he too can open, same to rohit sharma there are loy of left handlers in side so they needed him. overall good selection

misses: praveen kumar, gambhir,

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:31 GMT)

Let me correct all of you, Shikhar will open with LORD ROHIT SHARMA not Vijay & Karthik is picked as a pure batsman not as a backup wicket keeper.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:30 GMT)

The most balanced side ever chosen & also most unbiased, based not only on current form but with 2015 in mind. For too long, the selectors have depended more on flamboyance than performance & talent.Sandeep Patil & his team need to be applauded for their effort

Posted by Rumy1 on (May 4, 2013, 10:30 GMT)

WHAT HAS M.VIJAY DONE IN THE LAST ONE YEAR TO GET A PLACE IN ODI SIDE. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. WHEN WILL SELECTORS BE SELECTORS AND NOT ORDER TAKERS. If current IPL form was the criterion behind Amit Mishra (which is fine) then Ashwin and Jadeja shouldn't have found a place. On current form based on 40+ IPL matches thus far Harbhajan Singh has looked the best Indian offspinner but Ashwin got the nod. Thanks again to Dhoni & BCCI Chief's presumed influence on selectors if not anything else. Jadeja should also thank these two (again in this case) for his place in the team. Else what has Jadeja done in the current IPL thus far. If his recent Test exploits with bowling on dusty crumbling Indian turning tracks was the criterion then maybe selectors still have some hopes that ECB will prepare such tracks to help blokes like Jadeja. Without turning tracks, both Ashwin and Jadeja are club level bowlers who can bat a bit. Nothing more than that. The best swing bowler Praveen Kr is out ...no wonder.

Posted by Rakes93 on (May 4, 2013, 10:29 GMT)

i think that's a good selection. but as an opener rahane is better than vijay and deselection of yuvi is really a good decision. i think ojha might be deserve a chance

i still dont know how Rohit Sharma makes the cut....... tat too above Yuvi...... with short ball tha main trick in England... why vijay??? again and again why ROHIT and ISHANT?????? seriously these 3 guys are the luckiest of all..... vijay is not even selected for CSK team, we all know NO(RO)HIT sharma and ISHANT wont perform when they play for INDIA..... why dont you select ajinkya in place of rohit, he is not as bad as rohit....

but good thing is including irfan pathan, for me he should be in SA tour also, and also DINESH karthick, he is best opener among DHAWAN, VIJAY.......DINESH should play for me..... and its appreciable for not selecting gambir, yuvraj, harbajan..... anyway i am not expecting india to return with tropy with ISHANT leading the pace attack....

b prepared to b thrown out in the league matches itself. its not flat pitches of ind. welcome for swing frndly pitches of eng. n ppl like rohit n vijay r out in the first ball. is ipl the criteria for selections? rubbish. bad seleciton. yuv cant b ousted. n vijay cant b in. vijay was nt considered even by his club level team but fit for national team? u cant hv rohit in the 15. what does manoj tiwari hv to do to get selected? shud he wash dhoni's linen? what abt PUJARA non-selection in team of 15. his technique was needed the most in eng conditions, where none is going to hang around on the pitch, forget scoring runs. is dhoni going to keep him out of 11 even after getting in the 15 just like in home series against? even half-fit pujara with his broken hand led ind to victory against ausi in last test? now fitter pujara wud hv been a must for ind team. is rahane not going to get chance due to rohit's proximity with dhoni?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:23 GMT)

It is surprise that a technically sound player pujara has not been included in the team. On the seamin.g and swinging pitches of england he should have preferred to murali vijay. the team lacks in international experience and will not go far in the championship. However, if the selectors are consistent and stick to this team ,it may mature and prove handful to any team in 2015 world cup. But forget about retaining the world Cup.

Posted by pratik221087 on (May 4, 2013, 10:23 GMT)

team is good but selection of vinay kumar, murli vijay is bad. why not include rahane.. please in final 11 squad play without murli vijay n vinay kumar

Posted by guruprakash7 on (May 4, 2013, 10:22 GMT)

I have a question that why murali vijay had been taken. He scored only 196 runs in his 11 matches with an average of 17, highest score of 33 with a strike rate of 67.82. A batsman who scored a highest score of 33 with a very poor strike rate as a opener is, only the great M Vijay. Let's consider his IPL6 Score 18,3,2,18,24,2,50(50 balls),5.....?????????????

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:22 GMT)

pravin kumar is the best swing bowler for India,he did pretty well in tests during last england tour...he should have been selected.

one more chance for rohith sharma .... any way good selection

Posted by asvigneshbalaji on (May 4, 2013, 10:20 GMT)

@Midun Menon. If Vijay is not consistent, then What is Rohit/.? I am not a fan of Vijay either. But this is what they said before Aussie series. Lets give him a chance. IF IPL form is taken as a factor, Rohit should be Lord Rohit by now. Manoj Tiwary should have been given channces. He would be cursing Rohit now. How many players have Rohit blocked ? Badri, manoj, rahane.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:18 GMT)

Oh it's very wrong deciosion i think so ! gambir and uvraj are very clever batsmen !

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:18 GMT)

Eventhough I like Yuvi I guess he is done anyhow he wont play tests anymore and odi should have given a chance but by seeing this ipl he is out of shape and struggling to hit the ball after 10 or 15 minutes, he has to work on his fitness I guess. Those who whole heartedly complaining about M Vijay, then one qn what have S Dhawan done to get a spot to play in english condition, I would have preferred Rahane ahead of him. In Vijays case he has done enough to replace gambhir in the squad by his aus series performance. Vinay Kumar is owful selection instead Praveen Kumar should have got a spot. All the Best Team India.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:17 GMT)

Yuvraj is as better bowler as Sir RJ and a much much better batsman. Droping him does not make sense..!!

Posted by SamRoy on (May 4, 2013, 10:15 GMT)

@bluefunk LOL So our Michael Clarke is who, MS? Anyway, Gambhir and Yuvraj shouldn't have been dropped as they were doing decently (in ODIs) and in an important tournament, you need experience. Yuvraj might have failed as he is not a good player of swing bowling but at least one experienced opener is needed in England. IMHO Gambhir axing is a selection blunder and so too is dropping Shami Ahmed for Vinay Kumar and inclusion of M Vijay and non-inclusion of Pujara.

I hope the selectors have picked a good combination of players for the Champions Trophy even thougjh experience is missing at the top and in the bowling department I expect this team will play good cricket......... not expecting the trophy

Posted by class9ryan on (May 4, 2013, 10:09 GMT)

Now the squad is selected, I hope Karthik does play in the final 11. But the stern test for MS Dhoni lies is who he goes with - Sir Ravindra or Pathan Irfan.

POSITIVES : there are players who can play pace well - Dhoni, Dhawan, Karthik, Kohli and Rohit( depends on his sluggish form ), good spinners ( having variety in pockets, needed on green tops ).

But the major problem - Pace attack ... Is it good enough even in seam friendly conditions ?

Posted by kricket_baba on (May 4, 2013, 10:09 GMT)

Finally India has got a good selection panel that isn't afraid to take the tough decisions for the better of the team, hats off to Sandeep Patil and co. Good solid openers perfect for English conditions, good choice of in-form bowlers and all rounders in Pathan and Jadeja, and a good back up wicketkeeping option in Karthik Brilliant decision to let go of Gambhir , he is a good player but needs sometime out to cool down and focus again, but i still dont get it why stick with Rohit, he is never going to be consistent, still think Rahane deserves more chances

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:08 GMT)

BrutalAnalyst, R Uthappa has proved to be a pastmaster at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The whole world has seen him demonstrate with straight batting that he can win a game for his side. Then, in an attempt to show-off his non-existent innovation skills, he manages to get out attempting reverse sweeps / scoops to balls that he would have hit for 4 playing straight, losing the match for his side. If you don't want Sharma, I have no objection, but Uthappa - give me a break. Dhoni would be better off playing 1 short.

Playing 11, barring the unforeseen is elimentary to me - Dhawan, Karthik, Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Sharma, Pathan, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Yadav, Ishant.

Batting - Dhoni + 4 specialists, Jadu, Pathan & Ashwin Bowling - 2 spinners, 4 seamers with Kohli, Raina & sharma. Fielding - Dhawan, Kohli, Raina, Sharma & Jadeja

Dhoni would be well supported.

If this combination can't win, I guess we just doff our hats to any opposition that wins, saying well played.

Posted by KK5619 on (May 4, 2013, 10:07 GMT)

Without yuvi & gautam India cannot win any major trophy..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:06 GMT)

I can't understand the selection of Vinay Kumar. No pace. No swing. We would have been better off with Praveen or Shami. I don't have a problem with the selection of M.Vijay. Batting in the swinging conditions of England, would be similar to a test match.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:05 GMT)

Murali Vijay's selection is a bad choice. Yuvraj, considering his experience or Rahane for that matter are better prospects. Rest of the squad is decent. I hope Dinesh Karthik makes use of this opportunity to cement his place as a specialist batsman. At times, he can also give some relief to MSD

The likely playing XI in the early matches........Shikhar Dhawan, Karthik / Vijay, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina,Rohit , Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma

The selectors should be lauded for their decisions, it's better to take tough decisions now rather than regretting after 2015 world cup, simply put, teams should be selected based on current form rather than reputation/seniority, in that spirit a good squad. However Rohit needs to grab his opportunities sooner than later.

That being said, the likes of Sehwag, Yuvi, Gambhir, Rahane or Bhajji can force their way back with strong domestic performances, overall the Selector's forward thinking approach will serve will for the 2015 World cup.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:03 GMT)

Team is good--------but why vinay kumar. he is domestic player only.He can not bowl on fast pitches. Praveen kumar is best but selection committee dropped him.Other team is good and best of luck INDIA.

Posted by sree_yuvi on (May 4, 2013, 10:03 GMT)

Jadeja instead of Yuvi ??.. At International level you can hardly expect a no ball when you need to score 2 runs of a last ball...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 10:01 GMT)

is vijay netter than gambhir. I do not think so. the otherteams will be excited to see India is without sehwag gambhir tendu yuvraj in our line up. either sehwag or gambhir should have been there .Also yuvi to my memory is doing fairly well in one dayers .

Posted by INDIAhello on (May 4, 2013, 10:00 GMT)

Yuvraj and Gambhir should have given a last chance instead of selecting M Vijay and Rohit Sharma, also Why concentrate lot on spin Options where the conditions in England supports Fast bowling Shami Ahmed should have been retained instead of Amit Mishra, any way good luck Team India...

Posted by Aaranya on (May 4, 2013, 9:58 GMT)

Rohit is a bad choice and Vijay is a surprise choice. Just had that luck, seems.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:56 GMT)

m.vijay is not a consistent player.he shud have been dropped..pujara was a much better option than vijay..chances shud be given to young lads like sanju samson

Posted by FAB_ALI on (May 4, 2013, 9:53 GMT)

My first choice XI would be - Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Irfan, Ashwin, Vinay, Bhuvi & Yadav.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:51 GMT)

bad opener selection not m vijay.......sehwag or rahane......... and middle order ..... not rohit sharma ............yuvraj singh

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (May 4, 2013, 9:51 GMT)

I never understand all the talk about Sharma and Yuvraj both totally overrated for me ROBIN UTHAPPA is a better batsman than both of them out together, how is top scorer in India's domestic comp not even included in the squad ?

Posted by FAB_ALI on (May 4, 2013, 9:51 GMT)

Seeing this squad, Ideally India shouldl go with four bolwers (three seamers+ashwin), two allrounders (irfan & jadeja) and five batsmen. Because no one other than Kohli is promising in top four so why not play one allrounder instead of picking Rohit Sharma or Karthik.

Posted by passionatecricbug on (May 4, 2013, 9:50 GMT)

Mohit Sharma should have been picked in place of Irfan. That would strengthen our bowling. There was a time we used to believe Irfan is a dangerous wicket-taking bowler. Then came a time when we thought he is the all-rounder India was searching for a long time: he can bowl as well as bat. Let's be honest: today he can niether bat nor ball. Not being pathetic does not mean brilliance. Mohit Sharma could take a lot of wickets on seaming England pitches.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:50 GMT)

Gambhir's omition was expected but dropping Yuvi was surprised but selectors can't rely on his form & fitness as he seems not fully fit to play ODI. Surprise call was Vijay as he is performing well in Test matches but ODI he may be selected in the basis of professional opener. England Pitches offering swing, so we have to fully rely on Bhuvi and Ishant to bowl well to win the match. This side has been selected based on the current form and not sure how they gonna perform in limited over format with having good t20 form. Virat and MSD has to play every match to take India home. Looking at the team possible playing XI would be having Dhawan, Vijay, Virat, Rohit, Raina, MSD, Jaddu, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ishant & Ummi. This is the best XI and they will produce the result. Good luck Boys

Posted by timtom on (May 4, 2013, 9:50 GMT)

Very good team..It does`nt matter if India win champions trophy or not.At least these guys were tried.. Right decisions considering 2015WC.. Vijay is the odd man out still better than Gambhir and Yuvi ..Hail selectors......

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:49 GMT)

Good Selection, But why Murli Vijay ??? Dhoni effect !!!

Posted by FAB_ALI on (May 4, 2013, 9:49 GMT)

In this batting line up, Virat Kohli has a big big responsibility on his shoulders. Not assured how much runs we will get from the top two and from number 4 whoever plays at these positions and thus, Kohli needs to fire in almost every game. No. 5,6 & 7 are good enough and assured as Raina, Dhoni and Jadeja.

Posted by ttap on (May 4, 2013, 9:48 GMT)

Selector can pick any 15 from Ranji Players. Outside of sub-continent, India can't win. Only they can win in flat pitches in india only. So It is better that whole Team change in every series picking player from Ranji Teams. Thus everybody get chance to play international cricket.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:47 GMT)

Team is selected well. It is a very balanced side in batting as well as bowling department, especially the middle order including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Irfan Pathan appears robust... The only disappointment is about Praveen Kumar, whose bowling is suitable for English condition and his record is also good there...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:46 GMT)

No sehwag,No gambhir ,No tendulkar,No zaheer khan , No harbhajhan singh,No rahul dravid....not much hope for india this champions trophy.... :p

Posted by cric_J on (May 4, 2013, 9:46 GMT)

The selectors have yet again gone with the "extremely talented " Rohit Sharma. But till date he has materialised this talent only during the cash rich IPL . And it is needless to say that there is quite a difference between an ODI and a T20. I don't think there has been an Indian player who has been given more chances than him and has failed repeatedly and that miserably.

The India ODI cap is a precious one and should be given to people who really want to do well for the country and not perform only for money !

Vijay is another pathetic selection . He has even been dropped from CSK ! What more proof do the selectors want for not making such horrible decisions.

I hate to say this but I am really looking forward to seeing how

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:45 GMT)

I Think... Gautam & Youvi should not drop.... As Goutam is in good form & Youvraj is also better alrounder then Ravinder Jadaja , he is capable to change the game . I don't think Vijay is better then Ganbhir . Irfan inclusion is good for india ,

Posted by SherjilIslam on (May 4, 2013, 9:45 GMT)

This is another ridiculous team selection. Can anybody explain me on what basis does M. Vijay qualifies to get selected for CT in England???? He is in horrible form in this year's IPL (If IPL is the selection criteria), he was not the part of ODI team which India played against England, so performance of the last series also not taken into account. I also believe in no case, the form of T-20s shall be considered for selection in ODIs. Extremely displeased with the omission of Rahane and Yuvraj.I believe India would be extremely lucky to win even a single match with such a fragile batting order.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:43 GMT)

If I was a selector, I would drop Rohit Sharma from the ODI's, but give him a place in the Test Team. The way he has played in Ranji in the last few seasons, I feel the time has come to put him in the test team. In ODI's he has not performed so far, so better to give Yuvi a chance here.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:42 GMT)

After a long long time I can say a Good team is selected. They have shed the previous policy of including people with Big Names he is a big hitter he is a match winner etc.Out of the 15 almost 8-9 are automatic selection which leaves 3-4 spots open.Hope the selection is good and we win some games.M Vijay scored centuries in Tests but has been a failure in T 20 I would prefer him on the bench rather than open but with no choice for openers I guess he will play.If they can experiment with Rohit/Pathan opening with Dhawan it would be interesting.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:41 GMT)

agony for yuvi not sure for gambhir.....seaming conditions ...yuvi would have been better bet in the place of vijay as he is still a match winner on any given day at any where in world as compare to vijay who is less experienced while playing on such conditions.... more vulnerable out side the off stump and cannot bowl............

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (May 4, 2013, 9:40 GMT)

The best India squad the only change I'd make would be inclusion of Uthappa over Nohit Sharma. Dhawan and Karthik are huge boost to batting both much better players than Yuvraj, Yuvraj should have been gone a long time ago and he's always been a bunny in England for most part anyway.

Posted by Venkiviru on (May 4, 2013, 9:40 GMT)

nice selection....good decision nt 2 select Rohit Sharma n Gambhir on their current IPL performances though Irfan's selection is quite baffling as he hasnt done anything of late

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:40 GMT)

Not impressed with the selection of M.Vijay i dont know y they considered him, he is a bad selection coz he never proved consistent. Either Gambhir or yuvi would have been fit in the side their experience mi8 help us.. Rahane should n't deserve chance after his failure agnst ENG.. Apart from M.vijay inclusion and exclusion of yuvi and gambhir, it was a good selection. but the team not looking quite gud as it was iin the past on paper let see how much can dhoni get succeed wid dis team.. All The Best Team India

Posted by yorkerboy on (May 4, 2013, 9:40 GMT)

Everybody is questioning Vijay's selection! Can all remember what made selectors to include Dhawan in the squad? That 187 in 1 innings & 2 good 50's in IPL this season right? if you keep that as a Yardstick, isnt it vijay selection is very fair? He scored 2 good 150's in test & has scored 1 50 in this IPL! Also its not over yet for Murali Vijay in IPL! Dont forget that critics! Be Rationale! Its a good selection overall..!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:39 GMT)

Its a balanced side and selectors have kept in mind the future series in south Africa and the world cup..only thing not understandable is inclusion of rohit sharma.. Tiwary was a much better option and composed technique too..murali cijay has been selected on basis of form against Australia and his aggressive intent..its dhonis team and is his time now..so he knows better what he is doing..good selection overall.....Dr Varad

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:38 GMT)

Good selection... happy to see that, selectors has taken some bold decisions. This wil b good for indian cricket. the main thing i have noticed in this team is the capability in fielding.. with Raina, kohli, jadeja, rohit, karthik, dhavan... we are the best in the world. Jadeja assures stability to the team with bat and bowl. All the best team india.

Posted by vish57 on (May 4, 2013, 9:35 GMT)

Need to applaud the selectors for selecting the team on performance. Gambhir could have been preferred over Vijay, yet very fair, Dinesh Karthik can open as well which he has done during 2007 tour. Bowling department is the best available in India with Bhubaneswar Kumar and Irfran swinging the ball and Ishanth and Umesh to support. India can Play with 5 batsmen + WK+ Jadeja, Irfran, Ashwin Ishanth and Umesh so that till No. 9 we have depth in batting. Really the selectors are doing good and deserves pat irrespective whether India qualifies for semi finals or wins. I also find that for the first time there is no regional bias in team selection. All said I pity Ajikha Rahane who is falling in line with Abhinav Mukund being ignored. I am sure these two, Pujara , Gambhir all can be in India A team to SA so that India can play a better criciket down under later in Nov-Dec.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:34 GMT)

Overall it is good team except for M.Vijay selection. Yuvi should have been selected. For all those peoples who are not satisfied with the selection of Vinay Kumar, look at this stat, he is been the best pace bowler for India after WC2011,

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;spanmin1=05+Apr+2011;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=bowling

He is in good form in IPL also , hope he justifies his selection ....

Its good selection but M.vijay is poor selection , not performing and sitting bench in ipl ..yuvi is for m.Vijay and another one vinay kumar

Posted by Servin on (May 4, 2013, 9:33 GMT)

My palying 11 1. Dhawan, 2. Karthi, 3. Kohli, 4. Rohit, 5. Raini, 6. Dhoni, 7. Jadeja, 8. Pathan, 9. Ashwin, 10. Bhuvneshwar, 11. Ishant/Vinay/Umesh

Is Gautam Gambhir the Simon Katich of Indian cricket?

Posted by kquool on (May 4, 2013, 9:31 GMT)

i agree that vijay should not have been selected and instead ajinkya rahane should have come in. rohit sharma seems to have hit some kind of form and warrants inclusion.

what one does notice is that the core of the one day team of the last decade is out and there is a new Core forming!!! the only person i will miss is SRT all the rest have done their time and will have to fight their way back!!!

This is a good job overall by the selectors with Dhoni's inputs. Hope virat kohli doesnt mess around like sehwag for captaincy!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:30 GMT)

Bad team selection..before watching a game I cn say tht we r nt winning champion trophy dis time..sad :(

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:27 GMT)

Apart from Dropping Yuvraj It's a gud selection.... Wondered why Yuvi had been dropped... He started as a gud cricketer while playing in eng conditions...Rohit getting mre chances coz of IPL nd nt performing in Intl matches... But Yuvi deserved to be in the squad... As a fan of Yuvraj Stil nt digesting as he's been dropped from the ODI squad... Totally Disguising.....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:27 GMT)

Sehwag could have given a chance instead of Murali Vijay!!!!!!!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:26 GMT)

Gosh...........hard to believe that players of the caliber of Gambhir and Yuvraj have been left out. Gambhir has been performing so good in the IPL. And Murli Vijay whose performance has been below par in both IPL and ODI International is included for Champions Trophy.

Next comes Rohit Sharma..........he performs in IPL but underperforms for Team India. This team is a joke

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:26 GMT)

Dropping Yuvraj Singh is not good movie , he is far batter batsmen than Rohit Sharma

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:24 GMT)

Good team selection, I think IPL is nothing less than a International Tournament... and it being our own Indian based tournament at least we need to take its results seriously... One thing is for sure IPL Successes may not be ODI & Test Successes but IPL failures are defenitely having a bad patch with their talent or temperment so dropping them is mandatory.... Because u get so many chances in IPL that a player like ghambir or yuvraj should regain their form in such a long tournament and play some winning knocks for their team... just see how Rohit, Dhawan, Karthick are doing the same...

Posted by nandkishor45 on (May 4, 2013, 9:24 GMT)

Dropping Yuvraj may cost in england. we need balanced team with experienced like Gambhir.....Murali vijay has never scored a half century and have only avg of 17.81 how he can be given opportunity again. in case we are no picking Yuvi then we would have selected some young blood from the performing pool of IPL. vinay again got a chance ahead of shami ahmed who done well in last series. sehwag is a good option against Gambhir in england.

Posted by Sautrik on (May 4, 2013, 9:23 GMT)

just because Rohit sharma is an ipl success doesn't hide his international failure. Murali vijay is also a bad selection, because, neither has he been a consistent playerr, nor is he a loyal team man. also, Vinay has never been much of an international success. Fully support the inclusion of karthik and pathan, but sadly, because of some weird other inclusions and some disappointing exclusions (gambhir, rahane, tiwary, yuvi, sehwag), India are looking at another group stage exit.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:23 GMT)

It is a bold selection, gives an indication to all that performance is matter, nothing is granted in the top level. well balanced and good combinations. It very hard to over look player like Yuvaraj singh, he deserves place in the fifteen. I would like to see YU in place of Rohith sharma in the squad.

Posted by 11_Warrior on (May 4, 2013, 9:22 GMT)

Virat Kohli is vice captain of the side, Though there is no official announcement about it !!!

Posted by rajattiwaari on (May 4, 2013, 9:22 GMT)

Yuvraj should have been there . Yuvi has excellent record in ODIs. Otherwise a very good team.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:21 GMT)

Again mishra will be acting as water boy,,,,,real test for Ashwin and Jadeja,,,,they still need to prove themselves outside India

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:21 GMT)

Bowling looks good, batting selection concerns a lot...experienced Yuvi ignored.. why Vijay ahead of Rahane...Rahane has good record in one-dayers and also experience in previous England tour !!! However wouldn't mind much coz..its a short tournament, India has 3 matches before semis... given the likes of RSA and PAK attack, indian batting doesn't seem to have answers !!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:19 GMT)

why u hv done to yuvraj im happy with the exclusion of gambhir but yuvraj should be there he is a match winner u know he is more committed to the indian team than ipl teams,i really miss him...i dont understand the decision to include m vijay he is a terrible player when the conditions are favourable to the bowlers. In all i can say that this one is a bad move by indian selectors rethink guys othrwise u will see in coming days......

Posted by Rajesh.y93 on (May 4, 2013, 9:16 GMT)

dropping of yuvraj is a shock....!.his place connot be replaced.he's like a pillar in middle order and can manage with both bat and ball..and fielding too.pujara is best option than vijay.

Posted by ultimate stars on (May 4, 2013, 9:16 GMT)

For this team my playing eleven will be, Dhawan, Rohit(Better opener than Vijay), Kohli, Karthik, Dhoni, Raina, Pathan, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ishanth and for that place its either Mishra/Umesh/Jadeja. Inclusion of Vijay & 3rd spinner makes our team very week. Yuvi should have been in eleven but unfortunately he is not in squad itself.

Posted by wadesamir on (May 4, 2013, 9:15 GMT)

i think first of all we have to change the selecting commiteee!!! bczzzzzz u cant leave our two world cup heroes gauti and yuvi in a big tournement like champions trophy where we have won only one hoooooo that too by sharing with srilanka due to rain!!!! and look what our selectors did they r sending m vijay to check will he play good or not but dear selectors we have only 3 chance to be in final and we have to beat pak,sa and wi! and as the matches are in eng it is difficult and without yuvi and gauti it is verrrrrrrry diffff! and as we know yuvi play good at eng and still selector droped yuvi and gauti is verrrrry good in odi! and tell me why there is r sharma and m vijay! i think r sharma has an avg of just under 20 in last 10 odi's !i must say no we have to have beleive only on kohli, raina and dhoni to strong our batting! vinay and irfan are godd pickup bczz both are good swinger of ball in eng we need swing bowlers!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:15 GMT)

Manoj Tiwary has a 60+ and 100+ score in the last 2 ODIs he has played. He was also the highest scorer in 2 side games against 2 visiting sides England and Australia. Yes he hasnt performed in IPL, but is IPL the only yardstick for getting India colors?

Posted by kk777 on (May 4, 2013, 9:14 GMT)

There will always be hue and cry about any team selection in India(after all we are a billion strong country with as many opinions). But what grates me most is the fact that some people are complaining without reading the full article, like those criticizing for Pujara's exclusion...Open your eyes! HE IS INJURED...which he frequently is... Please burn that into your overworked brains. Apart from that any other controversial selection like Vijay & Rohit for Yuvi and Gambhir could have gone either way. Overall pretty satisfied with the selection. Only problem is: I will miss Sachin playing in Indian Blue...May the force be with you guys...Bring the trophy home!

Posted by SKT_G on (May 4, 2013, 9:12 GMT)

I think given to the england condition yuvi is better player than Vijay, If these selection has been made by looking at current IPL form of then also there is not much difference between Yuvi and vijay. Apart from that Gambhir lost is place because of his last 3-4 inning in IPL before that he was in good touch.By looking at Rohit and vinay kumar's selection it is clear that IPL is not just indian paisa leauge moreover if you can perform it can change your fortune & vice versa

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:12 GMT)

Many ppl wondering how irfan pathan has been selected.. i think murali vijay is lucky to get selected bcoz there is no other option as an opener apart from gambhir.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (May 4, 2013, 9:11 GMT)

I think Robin Uthappa should have been included. He is a better wicket keeper batsman. Its coz Dhoni can only play well on flat pitches in India. He is gonna miss Indian highways a lot in England n fail big time. He hasn't scored a single century (odi/test) outside of sub-continent. So Uthappa can replace Dhoni. And I think Samson is better than Kohli. And Piyush Chawla can replace Ashwin. If these changes are made, India will at least have a chance to make it to semis.

Posted by AMAZINGFAN on (May 4, 2013, 9:11 GMT)

FAIR SELECTION...rahane doesn't deserve to be in the squad after his failures against eng in odi series,he was struggling against swing and pace and his techinque was exposed badly by finn..yuvi was never a good player on fast pitches...he struggles against pace, swing and off-spin...the only selection i don't agree with is the inclusion of vinay kumar, with his pace he can never trouble international batsmen,he got lots of wickets in this IPL because it's t20 ....ODIS r completely different from T20S...cricinfo pls publish

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:11 GMT)

salute patil and co. for taking a tough steps by throwing out the so called seniors..( gambir bhajji shewag) nice to see kartik irfan umesh back in blue jersy..it should be simple those who are performing will be given chance irrespective of snr/junr, or past records... dhawan and kartik should open, while both irfan and jadeja should be in playing eleven, irfan will bounce back on international platform for sure, h will love to bowl in his favourable conditions..inswing and lbw/bold...waiting for that dismissal...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:11 GMT)

I am pleased with this selection, especially with exclusion of ghambir and inclusion of DK. But there are problems in both the departments. Batting -pacey, bouncy and swinging conditions are a challenge. Bowling - except Bhuvaneshwar i don't see anyone who can swing and except Umesh i dont anyone who can bowl fast. Ignore "always good length bowling" ishant sharma. he only knows one delivery to bowl.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:09 GMT)

Good selection based on current form and available resources. Dhoni,Dhawan,Ashwin,kohli,raina-Expected and no issues Vijay-scored against AUS in test, fair enough to continue the successful opener Karthik,Mishra-seems to be selected based on IPL but done well in domestic season also, fair choice Jadeja,irfan- fair enough for all rounder Umesh,bhuvi,ishanth-expected, tick Vinay-IPL performance, should have given chance for shami, might be experience. Rohit- still "promising talent" for selectors considering IPL success is not new for him

No gauti- didn't learn from mistakes still having those bad habits(dab down to third man) good choice. No yuvraj-doesn't look fit, seems to put on weight, need more match practice, fair enough No Rahane- made to warm the bench too much, looks like lost his touch, fair enough

Overall its good selection depending on the resources and there aren't any young players who set stage on fire at the moment.sad

Posted by nair_ottappalam on (May 4, 2013, 9:08 GMT)

A real mix up on the cards. No much idea of how Raina plays in English conditions. A big question mark on the selection of Irfan Pathan and Vinay Kumar. Jadejs's subcontinent form may not favour him abroad. A big opening partnership may elude in the post Sehwat-Gambhir era atleast for the time being. Dhawan and Vijay are both attacking batsmen, but English conditions?????? Yes Kohli and Dhoni are destined to give a strong middle order. It might be a toss between Kartik and Rohit where Karik should figure in the playing XI.

vinay is doing good job for RCB, nice to see him in the team

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:05 GMT)

i think this is a good selection but yuvi should be there instead of vijay he has not performed in the iplas yuvi is handy batsman in england seaming condition my eleven would be dhawan, kartik, kolhi, raina, rohit, jadeja, ashwin, buvi, ishant, and umesh

Posted by ramz30380 on (May 4, 2013, 9:04 GMT)

I still cant digest that Rahane isn't there. He deserves a place in the squad. I can't see a chance of playing Amit Mishra in Eng conditions, though he deserves a place in the squad due to his recent form in the IPL. Rahane cud have been picked in his place.

Too bad that Pujara is injured. I am sure he would have been an immediate choice otherwise.

Apart from that, its a well balanced team. Good job done selectors - in fact a very bold job done! You need a pat on the back for not going by past reputation and choosing players on merit!

My XI to play against South Africa will be:

1. Dhawan 2. D.Karthik 3. V.Kohli 4. Rohit Sharma 5. Suresh Raina 6. M.S.Doni 7. I.Pathan 8. Sir R.Jadeja 9. R.Ashwin 10. B.Kumar 11. U.Yadav

good selection.... gambhir deserved to be dropped, i think yuvraj was omitted because of the conditions in England. anyway a bold selection.. shows that no body can take their places in the side for granted.. including in form players like dhawan, mishra, dinesh karthik is a good move. hope we perform up to the potential and win the champions trophy. my playing X1 would be: dhawan, rohit sharma, kohli, dhoni, raina, jadeja, pathan, mishra, ashwin, bhuvaneshwar kumar and umesh yadav.

Posted by Kishore2994 on (May 4, 2013, 9:02 GMT)

Not a good team selection.Yuvi should be there in squad as we all know in england pitches he is very good batsman.Yuvi is good allrounder and especiaily in one day matches. We should not consider his performance of IPL in one day matches also.Mohit Sharma should also get chance.Gambhir is out , this is good decision.

Dropping Yuvraj Singh is a surprise move. Didnt expect this. Yuvraj Singh is a Tournament Player. He performs really well in Tournaments. If based on IPL Form, he is not selected, has he performed so big in IPLs in the last 6years? Vinay Kumar s selection also is worrying. Don t think he has performed so well for India in the Past. Rohit Sharma is in the team still. Last 12 Matches in the Last One year he is averaging just 16.00. Gautam Gambhir has been averaging a 32.50 in the last year and his experience would have been necessary to play in English Conditions.. If Rohit Sharma is given that many chances why is Yuvi or Gambhir not given that many chances??

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:01 GMT)

Good selection except Rohit Sharma and somewhat Murli Vijay. Rohit only plays in IPL. Till now he didn't showed enough batmenship for INDIA.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:01 GMT)

Yuvi cant be judged with domestic performance. He is always best in the international big series. Murly vijay can never be a choice in England. He cant even perform in domestic as well. Manoj tiwary should be included in the team. How many times he needs to prove himself and if IPL is the only place to judge players then why not stuart binny in the team. I dont think jadeja can do anything in England......

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:01 GMT)

Why M. Vijay ??? its bad, Instead I would prefer Yuvi..

Posted by ir_prathik on (May 4, 2013, 9:01 GMT)

I think Pujara deserved a chance

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 9:01 GMT)

good to see this panel heading in the right direction. Gambhir has been exposed and keeps getting out to the same ball. Yuvraj is not the same player after recovering from cancer. Both need to get some runs in first class and List A (not IPL) to force their way back in. Why is rohit sharma still in. his list A stats aren't very impressive and hence he has been average in ODI's. For a guy with an List A average of 35 to have played so many matches is amazing, and to average 60 in first class and not playing a single test is really making me laugh. While he is in and if he is picked, then opening is the most ideal position for him,as India has no openers and Rohit did get a very good match winning 80 against a good England side, so he atleast has some experience.

Posted by PShukla on (May 4, 2013, 9:00 GMT)

M Vijay seems incapable of performing outside India and he will not find more difficult conditions than English. India needs Yuvraj in England else they will not even reach the knock-out stage. Players like Yuvraj still have 5-6 years of cricket left in them and selectors need to understand that such a talent is not available easily

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:59 GMT)

With a team selection as bold as this. The future for Indian Cricket looks very bright. It also motivated a lot of youngsters who are not in the squad today to put in more efforts and hardwork to make it to the squad.

The era of big names is over. This is a new era where only performance speaks.

For those who are criticising. Guys we can never have a common opinion hahahahhah. But the selected squad looks very promising.

Cricket looks taken care of with Mr. Sandeep Patil and company. Can we focus a lil on the political scenario and try to fix that as we dont have Mr. Sandeep Patil and co. there. We ourselves are the selectors.

Good Luck team. We sure hope a good performance.

My playing 11 1) Dhawan 2) Karthik 3) Virat 4) Raina 5) Rohit 6) MSD 7) Ashwin 8) Jaddu 9) Bhuvneswhwar 10) Umesh yadav 11) Irfan....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:58 GMT)

Sanju V Samson is a good option..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:57 GMT)

india is winning because of team effect and not because of dhoni captancy ... its better to drop him and get dinesh karthik in playing 11

Posted by binu.emiliya on (May 4, 2013, 8:57 GMT)

Man of the series of World Cup winnng squad is note selected why? He is not in great form in the IPL that is usual he always underperforming in IPL bu in national colour always a matchwinner we want that only just opposit of Gambheer and Rohith sharma who gives 100% to their IPL team, Yuvi should have been in the team over M Vijay Other than this a good team good selection

Posted by anerossi on (May 4, 2013, 8:57 GMT)

First of all i don't understand why people talk about selecting Rohit sharma ahead of Gambhir, for god's sake Gambhir is an opener and Rohit is a middle order batsmen. Secondly, Yuvi hasn't been hasn't been up to the mark after his comeback so not picking him is the right decision apart from that Gambhir should have been selected ahead of Viijay but Dinesh karthik being a specialist batsmen could open the innings. Overall its a decent selection by the board.

Posted by Kilish on (May 4, 2013, 8:57 GMT)

Yuvraj was not judged a/c 2 his IPL form, rather 2 his recovery as he is still in his recovery stage nd Gambhir not included wasnt a surprise for me as he is out of form. Selectors selected a decent line up including 5 game changers namely Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Mishra nd Umesh. I m satisfied with this line up though Yuvi should have been included. India will greatly miss the experience of Zak against the likes of Cook, Sangakkara, Amla, De villiers, Clarke...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:56 GMT)

Why Vijay again he is not in form now

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:56 GMT)

Those who commenting on vinay's selection, just have a look at his recent performence in shorter format, he is the leading indian bowler in on going ipl.... Instead of commenting on him , comment on irfan pathan's selection he did nothing to get selected, his recent performance in any format is horrible

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:56 GMT)

Gambhir Dropped...Cant believe...!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:55 GMT)

It is a good team selection but I wonder how it is going to fare in English conditions.

Posted by Gladiator11272 on (May 4, 2013, 8:54 GMT)

Don't see any reason as to why Shami Ahmed was dropped.. he did quite well in the last series where he made his debut ..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:54 GMT)

Nice and daring selection...However Rahane and Yuvi should have been better than Rohit and Vijay...

Posted by anuajm on (May 4, 2013, 8:54 GMT)

While overall the team looks ok but there are some baffling decisions. How can Yuvraj Singh be dropped, he might not have done well in IPL but he is one of the best players in short formats and will be the first player in our playing 11!! Dropping Gambhir is a good decision. I would have picked Rahane, Shami and Pujara too and don't see any reason why Vijay has been picked. Rohit Sharma also should not have featured. Karthik is a solid player who has never captured the chances coming his way. Overall as i said the team looks good, but some confusing decisions.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:53 GMT)

good selection..however i would have played rahane instead of vijay

Posted by crikcinfo on (May 4, 2013, 8:52 GMT)

Even as a die-hard CSK fan, I don't agree with the selection of Vijay. It's no secret that Yuvraj always plays at his best for the nation than the IPL team and hence can't take his dip in form in IPL to account and he deserved a place. Same goes for Rohit who only plays for IPL team and never for the nation. Leaving out Gambhir was right since all his dabs to third man would have ended up in the hands of slip in England. Vinay Kumar is a tried and tired piece of work and his art of death bowling is not working in sub-continent even most of the times. Could have given chance to somebody like Mohit Sharma.

Posted by Susheel1190 on (May 4, 2013, 8:52 GMT)

what wrong did shami ahmed do in the matches against england???Easily the best bowler behind bhuvi...bad decision!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:52 GMT)

very poor selection... Tough chance...:(

Posted by sonviks on (May 4, 2013, 8:51 GMT)

No doubt squad has been selected on basis of IPL performance Well laziness of Yuvraj cost him his place. Had he bowl well in some matches, he would have got in.But he is not keen to bowl at all.He should learn by the commitment of Sir Jadeja.World know that Sir jadeja is neither a bowler nor batsman but he always try & succeeds Gambhir must have been out due to his poor behavior. He is neither respecting juniors(Kohli) nor seniors (Dravid in yesterday match).Having Gambhir in squad & not in final playing XI will create rift among players. Better he has been excluded.Bowling dept is mix bag. Overall I am satisfied by the team.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:51 GMT)

should be yuvi why need rohit here yuvi well bowling also and batting also

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:50 GMT)

What Vijay is doing in the team and why yuvraj is out? I know That Yuvi is not giving good performance in ipl 6 but he should be in the team Becauce he is the match winner........ I think the decision of Gautam, Yuvraj and Rahne is not a good idea.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:50 GMT)

Good selection... only change can be rahane instead of vijay

Posted by saicharan200 on (May 4, 2013, 8:48 GMT)

Good to hear that gambhir got dropped, Brave decision from the selectors really but why do they prefer vijay over rahane and pujara z still puzzling me..Dinesh karthik is a good option, he can be a good backup to MSD and he can milk singles when given an opportunity in middle order..Dropping yuvi is also a bad decision from selectors..In england conditions why do we need 3 spinners..Instead of mishra yuvi can make the cut and his allround ability wll prove handy especially in england conditions as he can play well in fast conditions rather than clueless mishra..The bowling dept is looking nice though exclusion of praveen kumar is a bad idea..in those conditions pk will be a useful bowler as he can swing the bowl in both ways..overall it is a good selection. good luck team india.

Posted by huzrocks on (May 4, 2013, 8:48 GMT)

no player from the ganguly era !! next generation is here !! frst round exit though!! dhoni is defintly a partial captain..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:48 GMT)

Batting looks weak, openers are inexperienced , rohit sharma and vijay inconsistent .... raina jadeja cannot play short ball ,,, presence of yuvraj would have added strength ,,, If Rohit fails again at international level , please move on selectors ,,,, the word 'potential' really irritates now ...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:47 GMT)

I appreciate the selection of Indian team for champions league....Golden opportunity agn for Rohith sharma...special batsman-keeper Dinesh karthik gets opportunity n think its a very good n +ve move all rounder Irfan pathan in for yuvi n Shikar Dhawan included in place of Gautam Gambhir.....overall a nice combination of youngsters....

Posted by tambolisamir on (May 4, 2013, 8:47 GMT)

Rahane is always better option than vijay in swinging conditions....bad selection for opening pair!

Posted by sunrai on (May 4, 2013, 8:46 GMT)

Indian selectors are out of their mind. One thing is for sure that India is not going to win a single match in this tournament. I can't understand what are Vijay and Rohit Sharma doing in the team. They are getting chance again & again just b'coz of Dhoni & company. I think selection for 50-50 overs matches should not made on the basis of performance of IPL.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:45 GMT)

We have only one best rank i.e in ODI...With this team we will miss that No 1 Spot also

Posted by darkage on (May 4, 2013, 8:45 GMT)

i would say selecctors had shown some guts by dropping both gambhirand yuvraj, yuvraj batting has gone down a lot over few months its been reflecting in ipl aso dineesh karthik is a great selection

Posted by ramz30380 on (May 4, 2013, 8:44 GMT)

Its a good squad the only disappointment is not picking Rahane. He has done reasonably well and has a sound technique as well.

Vijay though good in tests hasnt really fired this IPL. Its surprising he is there.

I am happy for Dinesh Karthik. He is one of the most unluckiest wkt-kpr batsmen to be born in the Dhoni era.Hope he fits into the XI.

Yuvi hasnt been himself off-lately and hence him not making it is justified. He has not done himself a favor by playing rash shots this IPL.

Gambhir deserves to be dropped. His attitude and anger has been on public display for the past few days. First, it was with Virat, then with L.Balaji and yesterday with Rahul Dravid. Who on earth will pick up a fight with one of the finest gentlemen to ever play the game? It is never healthy for a team to have a man like that in the squad.

I am surprised that ppl are blaming MSD for dropping Gambhir. The captain has a say but he alone cannot decide the team, there are selectors who call the shots.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:44 GMT)

I think that is the rite choice but one thing is sure the conditions of Uk is totally different from india. So i think experience player like yuvi must be part of the team because every time the bat of dhoni is not enough for team India.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:43 GMT)

i think this is the best team going forward............specially keeping in mind the 2015 world cup...............seeing their recent selections i honestly believe india has a very good chance of retainng the 2015 world cup.............

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

Nice selection by Mr.Sandeep patil &co good they are groomoing youngsters i hope dhoni will build a team for 2015 world cup specially it will be in Australia

Posted by favazak1986 on (May 4, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

Not the best team I would have picked. V Kumar, A.Mishra, R Sharma, M Vijay would not find place in my squad. Sharma(Chennai super kings), Rahul Sharma, A Rahane, Yuvraj would be in my squad. Any how its close to a good team. G Gambhir deserved to be dropped after he had a spat with R Dravid, He should be banned for that incident for at-least 6 months. My first eleven with current team will be as follows in batting order 1.Dhawan 2.D Karthik 3.V Kohli 4.MS Dhoni 5.S. Raina 6.R Jadeja 7.I Pathan 8.R Ashwin 9.B Kumar 10.U Yadav 11. I Sharma ( 5 Batsman 4 All Rounders 2 Bowlers) Benchers:V Kumar, M Vijay, A.Mishra, R Sharma (these guys should remain in bench until there is an injury). All the very best Team India!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

Yeah Pujara should have been their.. But You can not pick a guy who is injured... Guys he will get his call.. I don't think we have to wait long to see him in blue colour.. I think this is best possible team

Posted by TATTUs on (May 4, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

Whats Vinay Kumar doing in there? He shouldnt be near any international team ever.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:41 GMT)

The selection is fair. but still yuvi would be a strong contender in seaming conditions. All the best for the team. I wish them to do well in England.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:41 GMT)

Seriously..??? How could u drop YUVI...??

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:41 GMT)

Good team but India droped its two world best lefthanders.. both are the key players in india's 2 world cup wins...UV in place of vijay could b a best choice..my best XI is;

Dhawan,karthik,kohli,rohit,raina,dhoni,jadeja/Mishra,irphan,ashwin,Bhuvi,Ishant

jadeja or mishra can considered but waste of vinay in team..instead they might have picked a allrounder like Binny or Rishi Dhawan

I think this series may b the last choice for thelikes of Vinay, vijay even for Umesh

Posted by cricketlover89 on (May 4, 2013, 8:40 GMT)

yuvi and gauti deserve to be dropped. msd is the boldest capt for india.. but rahane and manoj tiwary shoud have been in the team for vijay and rohit sharma according to my choice.. but when msd does something it will only be the good thing for team india as always... lets c if he proves that once again..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:40 GMT)

Shami Ahmed is better then Vinay Kumar, Yuvraj is better then Vijay.

Posted by riverlime on (May 4, 2013, 8:39 GMT)

It's a pity Praveen Kumar wasn't included, considering how effective he has been in recent limited overs games. He may not have express pace but he has the ability to swing the ball both ways, and in English conditions would have been quite a handful. Plus, to have a bowling line-up of 3 Kumars would have been a sight to see. (Bhuvneshwar, Vinay and Praveen).

Posted by MohamedBasheer on (May 4, 2013, 8:38 GMT)

I m wonder how Yuvraj missedout in the selection. He should be in for Vijay, Vijay is a test player, he have to perform some more test series to get the ODI squad. Is Yuvraj injured or what ? dropped Yuvraj is a BCCI's bad move.

Posted by naansari on (May 4, 2013, 8:38 GMT)

The batting line up look bit weak in absence of Gambhir and Yuvi. If the top order doesn't perform well then surely the middle order will have to do lot of hardwork. Anyway wishing the Indian team all the best and hope they perform well in the Champions Trophy.

Not sure if Vijay deserved an opportunity over Gambhir, or Rahane. But a good squad overall. Nice to see the selectors not afraid to drop senior players who aren't performing.

why yuvi was not selected.plz selectors dont be too harsh on yuvi.he was a game changer.though his performance in ipl 6 is not good as expected but you should give him a chance bcoz he is a talented all-rounder and experienced player.bizzare selection.hope to see india reaches semis.

a very bold team selection since a long time...bowling department look very string, may be best since a long time..only missing link is pujara who should have replaced rohit sharma...its hard to see him missing out so many matches due to injuries...only problem is as vijay did not play well in IPL, so if he misfire and rohit too (which he usually does), India will be short of batting...but vijay played remarkably well against Australia and deserve this...very happy too see selectors did not worry about his IPL form which really doesn't matter...

Posted by SamRoy on (May 4, 2013, 8:29 GMT)

Team is a joke. Vijay has done nothing to warrant a recall in ODI series. Shami Ahmed did nothing wrong to get dropped. Pujara never got a game to prove his ODI ability (he has tremendous domestic LIST A record). Vinay Kumar is a great bowler for opposition teams (second only to Dinda in that department). Yuvraj axing makes sense (though I would have picked him) because there might be some swing and he is not a good player of swing bowling (though he is India's biggest match winner). Apart from Yuvraj axing and obvious Dinda axing and inclusion of Karthik, Irfan and Umesh, nothing else makes any sense.

Shami Ahmed was good in all the matches he played. He must not be dropped. Why Murli Vijay is selected is not understandable. He was not good in domestic ODIs and one cannot be selected based on his test performance to a ODI side. I would rather take chances in Pujara as an opener, than to select Murli Vijay. Did selectors see the matches or just select the player for sake of their job....Anyone having a very little knowledge of international games will not select Vinay Kumar. He is neither a swing bowler who swings better than any one else in the Indian side or bowls fast. But he himself feels like a legend of the game. I always appreciated the work of present bunch of selectors but not this time....This time they has selected an IPL team rather than selecting an Indian team.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:27 GMT)

Not a very good selection.................Its totally based on IPL performance.....but the selection should be made on the basis of performance in national team and ranji......not IPL

sad to see rahane being dropped......he shud have been a member of CSK...sure wud hav been selected.........funny to see M. Vijay in the team.....lobbying plays a big part in India team selection...performance is secondary...........

Posted by frankzzzster on (May 4, 2013, 8:27 GMT)

Good Selection. But preferring Vijay over Rahane is huge disappointment (even though I'm a CSK fan) for me. Getting amit mishra in is good, but don't know what spinners are going to get in UK pitches. Earlier days, as like everyone I too said "WHY ROHIT SHARMA???", But now after seeing him bat in this IPL, I would give him even 1 million chances. That guy has some talent to hit the ball. Hope he performs this time and earn himself a place for next 3-5 years. Finally DK is back again. Dropping Yuvi, Gauti and Dinda gives them more time work on their mistakes. Pujara is out with injury! So overall, a good batting unit+WK+All rounders+bowling unit... Satisfied with the squad.

AH !! Vinay Kumar Again...I think if the thinking was to send a team for future, guys like trivedi, kulkarni who can ball quick as well as swing the ball better than vinay kumar, would have been better...whether Vinay can prove me wrong, only time will tell. All the best Guys!!

INDIAN TEAM WELL CHOSEN: This was expected that after Sehwag, Gambhir was living on the knife edge not only for his form in IPL but also of the selectors. Let me tell you that once again Rohit Sharma SURVIVES. Thot that Ambati Raydu would have made, but not a worry, coz in this IPL Rohit Sharma is playing 60/40 within his limitations. Welcome Back to international Cricket for Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan and that Small TUG thrice Hatrick Taker in IPL as far as wickets taken is concerned Amit Mishra. I would say that once again a bold step taken by Selectors Sandeep Patil and Company. Sure this Indian Team will win the CHAMPIONS TROPHY.

Posted by jagasworld on (May 4, 2013, 8:26 GMT)

I think Gambir deserves it for a worst behaviour. We are tired of Rohit drop him and bring in some fresh blood. Dinesh Kartick is definitely included as a batsman.

Posted by lastlaugher on (May 4, 2013, 8:25 GMT)

very bad selection indeed...how rohit and vijay finds a place in this team...if ipl performance is the criterion for selection for rohit, then what is the criterion for vijay??? He is a big failure in even ipl too...the only reason i can find for his selection is he is a csk player...but dinesh karthik and amit mishra are fair selection by the selectors...amit mishra is far better than ashwin, as he is a genuine wicket taker with his variations...dropping yuvraj was also a mistake...he is a far better allrounder than ravindra jadeja in foreign conditions...jadeja is good only in indian conditions... overall in batting department, selection is very poor...i dont think this team can do anything in england....best of luck team india !!!

first round exit for sure..way to go

Posted by JG2704 on (May 4, 2013, 8:25 GMT)

Yuvi seems more of a surprise omission than Dehwag and Gambhir to me. He adds a big threat in both batting and bowling and often makes a big contribution with one or the other. I certainly won't criticise the selections too much as I don't follow the domestic game. Karthik looked excellent in the IPL - can he come in as just a fielder/batsman?

Posted by Gurusamy84 on (May 4, 2013, 8:24 GMT)

Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (capt), Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma

It will be sure flop show in CL

Posted by cricketanand12 on (May 4, 2013, 8:24 GMT)

Good selection.Although ,Yuvraj could be a better option. We have players like Kohli,Raina,Dhoni,Jadeja,Ashwin who performed well with bat in 2011 in england.Even Karthik can be handy because he performed well in England last time in 2007.He has played well in South Africa and Australia. So,he can handle these conditions.Shikhar Dhawan will be the most valuable player if he can handle swinging conditions because he is a guy who can make runs very quickly because his boundary hitting abilities. We have swing bowlers like Bhuvaneshwar kumar.Vinay Kumar and Irfan Pathan can also swing the bowl well with decent accuracy.Umesh Yadav is more of a fast bowler, who can bowl full and fast delieveries in death overs.Ishant is a wicket taking bowler. Probably, this will be best XI: 1)Shikhar Dhawan,2)Murali Vijay,3)Virat Kohli,4)Suresh Raina,5)MS Dhoni,6)Dinesh Karthik/Rohit Sharma,7)Ravindra Jadeja,8)Irfan Pathan,9)Ravichandran Ashwin,10)Bhuvaneshwar Kumar,11)Umesh Yadav.

Can't believe it... they dropped yuvi based on IPL form...yuvi is player of international stature and should not be judged based on performance in domestic tournament. i'll take Yuvi any day instead of any member of this 15 player squad.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:24 GMT)

@raghvendra prasad, this is not these player's fault, if they r playing well from CHENNAI SUPER KINGS.. Yuvraj should have got chance in team,.. but this is a nice and balanced team.. The question is, how these players will play in England where condition favours seamers..

this is DHONI team......................................

Posted by srikanths on (May 4, 2013, 8:23 GMT)

Definite signs of confusion in selection. Some are based on IPL , Rohit Sharma and Amit Mishra ,Shami Ahmad and one is based on Test performance ? Murali Vijay. Ganbhir needs to be dropped only to on grounds of piquant behaviour. While one can say teh same about Kohli, Gambhir has been a consistent boor. He had shoulder charged watson a few years back, regularly gets in to fights and had a bad scrap with Kohli and that from a cricketer who has been in international game for 4-6 years, unpardonable. All these guys keep praising SRT ,Laxman, Kumble and Dravids but what have they learnt from those

Posted by Narabavi on (May 4, 2013, 8:23 GMT)

Murali Vijay beat Piyush Chawla to become the latest lucky charm in the Indian squad :)

No pujara again......................why rohit, vinay kumar in team...........they should be replaced by pujara, mohit sharma. surely.

good selection...however would have really like to see the Bhuvi and Ahmed's combo pace attack...happy to see Umesh back!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:22 GMT)

Good seletion. .Dinesh karthik rightly got into the squad. .Y irfan pathan????

Posted by vrkp on (May 4, 2013, 8:22 GMT)

still no place for Tiwari? But somehow the Nohit Sharma gets selected inspite of numerous failures in short formats of the game. Karthik is good selection, his past performance in Eng must have been one of the factor.

My playing XI for the first match:

Dhawan, Vijay, Kohli, Karthik, Raina, Dhoni, Sir RJ, Pathan, Ashwin, Bhuvi & Umesh

This XI has 3 openers (incl. karthik), batsmen up to 10, 2 spinners, 3 pacers, 2 wkt keepers. only 2 or 3 poor fielders. All basis are covered.

Posted by sahbas_s on (May 4, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

Can't expect our team to win the trophy. This team hardly has any experience in playing english conditions. Yuvi's experience and orthodox spin would have been crucial in english conditions. Nice to see Viru n Gauti dropped and can't figure out the reason for Vijay's inclusion.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

Rahane was awesome in England last year. Just 1 test match will decide his future???

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

Almost gud Selection but Vijay should not desreve palce in ODI & also many chance s given to Rohit, Yuvi is far better than Rohit & for Vijay --Ambati Raydu would have been best Choice.

Posted by muraliko on (May 4, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

excellent squard.....yuraj better option than Kartik....he would have been handy in clearing the big grounds and also as a spinner

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

SUPERB SELECTION FOR THIS COMPETITION....Gambhir's exclusion is fair...his behaviour on the field is quite ridiculous..cricket is a gentleman's game.... but little surprised with inclusion of vinay kumar..he is good in T20..bt hopefully he wll do better here..dinesh should be included in playing xi frm the start...he should be given chance ahead of rohit...My playing xi..1.dhawan2.vijay3.kohli4.kartik5.raina6.dhoni7.pathan8.ashwin9.bhuvi10.umesh11.ishant

Posted by allysvalley on (May 4, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

Praveen kumar had an excellent outing the last time he was in uk, his form this ipl is pretty good as well. Gambhir and rahane's exclusion is hard to digest and so is vijay's inclusion.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:20 GMT)

With Gambhir and Shewag inside the Squad we can come out of the compettion in the first round itself. We can rest assure our score is 20 for 1 or 30 for 2 with these two legends. Their prime has gone. Yuvaraj could have been an option in case if jadeja fails yuvi could have been brought in. never the less lets wait and watch

Posted by devil_in_details on (May 4, 2013, 8:20 GMT)

Team selected much along expected lines. To those questioning Gambhir's and yuvarja's exclusion and blaming it on ipl- the reality is their poor form in one dayers against england and pakistan cost them their place. Its just that I would have dropped raina as well- he will get bounced out and make a fool of himself. rahane has been poor in whatever international chances he has got so justifiably axed as well. Just hope rohit sharma makes more than his usual 30 runs or india will regularly be in big trouble hoping for dhoni to rescue them like it happened in the past tour of england. Would even be tempted to give karthick a chance ahead of raina or vijay. The playing 11 most likely would be murali, dhawan, kohli, rohit, raina, dhoni, jadeja, ahwin, bhuvi + two of unmesh/vinay/irfan. Mishra would be most likely a passenger and this team anyways would be lucky to make it to semis.

Why Rohit has selected for Champion trophy??? Because of Ipl performance..?? But they forgot to select Manoj Tiwary who score 1 hundred and 1 fifty in his last 3 ODI... And why not Yuvi and Gauti??? They were the only man who makes us T-20 world cup and one day world champion.:) Is this the Dhoni team who included CSK player and Nohit Sharma in the squad

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:18 GMT)

y all this fuss abt uv nd gauti... they hav gt wt thy deserved... u cnt expct players jst come in and play... all the players in the squad has done well for their place in the team in the last 2 months... and im very well pleased wth the selection... and abt pujara he isnt fit as he is injured and is yet to join rcb club... so he will join the indian team for the SA tour... the final XI wch i lyk to c in eng is MS Dhoni (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Vinay Kumar 1. Shikar Dhawan 2. M Vijay 3. Virat Kohli 4. Suresh Raina 5. Dinesh Karthik 6. MS Dhoni(c) (wk) 7. R Jadeaj 8. Irfan Pathan 9. R Ashwin 10.B Kumar 11. U Yadav ths team contains a lot of all rounders nd except yadav all r batsmans... nd they hv 2 swing bowlers nd 1 fast bowler nd 2 spinners and 1 part time spinner...would be ideal to go wth ths line up and bowl 1st

Gautam Gambhir should have been selected ahead of Murali Vijay. Vijay has not fared well in ODI's and that too in english conditions its a miserable decision.

Bizzarre selection.Team looks like selected on the basis of Ipl Form.Mr Selectors Y you people dont Explain on what basis you have selected Murli vijay. What is the need of three Spinners in England.Better to add some experience in opening pair. instead of dhawan and vijay ...rahane and gauti shoud be preferred over dem.

Posted by AravindxD on (May 4, 2013, 8:17 GMT)

yup i am happy with the selectors now .. my prediction came through but very sad for Pujara ... he needs to given atleast one opportunity to prove himself in ODIs . I wish DK doesn't warm the benches .. good team .. It has got match winners through out. My playing 11 :- 1. Dhawan , 2 DK , 3. Kholi ,4. Rohit , 5. Raina , 6. Dhoni , 7. Jaddu , 8. Ashwin , 9. Bhuvneshwar , 10. Umesh , 11.Irfan/ Ishant .

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:16 GMT)

This is wrong Gambhir is a good player and needed a back up his last odi perfomance wasn't good enough against england but he is a very experienced player. Shami Ahmed is a much better bowler than ishant sharma he doesn't give away too many runs. Rohit Sharma is playing well in ipl but his international perfomance cannot be trusted Yuvraj Singh would have been better bcoz he can bowl as well. The most important player is missing out from every india squad Cheteshwar Pujara after perfoming so well in tests the selectors didn't keep in odi squad that is very wrong. Gambhir should have been in place of Vijay. Pujara in place of Rohit.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:14 GMT)

I guess the selectors have picked quite a good squad, yuvraj was left out due to inconsistency and throwing his wicket away regularly in the India-England odi series, and gambhir is too fragile as a batsman which we have been observing for the past two and a half years.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:14 GMT)

what wrong did Rahane do to be dropped ?? Management didnt pick him in the 11 when he was in form and now instead of backing him they have dropped him for Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma can only be successful in T20s not in other formats. When Sehwag and Gmabhir were there it was said where to fit Rahane in. Now all three are out of the team. Strange!!

Posted by Arvind07 on (May 4, 2013, 8:14 GMT)

I really dont understand ...how can yuvraj singh be dropped...its totally an unfair selection..

Posted by Rugsy on (May 4, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

On expected lines, but that does not mean it's logical or correct. Rohit Sharma's inclusion continues to defy logic. From Jan 1, 2012 till date, the man has scored just 255 runs in 15 innings at an average of 17.00. It is completely inexplicable, unless he is a beneficiary of the BCCI quota system, what with the Chairman being from the West Zone. Nothing else can explain such a non-performer at the highest level being selected again and again and again..... The other selection that is meaningless is that of Irfan Pathan. Irfan's best days are long over, he looks a pale shadow of himself. No pace or bite in his bowling, no consistency in his batting. He is hardly an investment for the future. Both these players could have been replaced by some promising youngsters. Long live BCCI

Posted by SachinLara1 on (May 4, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

overall good squad.. 1..Rohit has been given many opportunities..its high time he makes it count. 2.Vijay has only played 11 matches lets be patient on him atleast for couple of series. 3.DK should always be the reserve keeper at times can be played as batsman. playing 11: dhawan,vijay,kohli,rohit/DK,raina,MSD,jadeja,ashwin,buvi kumar, umesh, ishant.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:12 GMT)

Posted by venkatesh018 on (May 4, 2013, 8:12 GMT)

Gambhir would have been a much better opening option than Vijay in England. Yuvraj or Wriddhiman Saha deserved to go in place of Dinesh Karthik. Also, how the junior Pathan keeps getting selected when people like Praveen Kumar, Ishwar Pandey and Pankaj Singh are left out is puzzling.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:11 GMT)

good selection. i am happy selectors persisted with rohit. PPL might bay for his blood & creek abt d chances he was presented, but i feel he's done well,if not totally justifying his talent, Except for d Sl series[2012], which was a disaster for him, he's slot was always floating, even in t20's where he batted at no:7.D fact is he'd future for india in all formats. Dhoni handle him well, pls.

On what basis Murali Vijay got selected is beyond me. By the way, has anyone noticed this squad has only 3 players out of the 15 from the winning World Cup Squad only 2 years later?

Anyway, 3 changes i'd love to have seen in this squad: 1. Instead of Ravindra Jadeja or Amit Mishra - Yuvraj Singh 2. Instead of Murali Vijay - Gambhir or Sehwag 3. Instead of Vinay Kumar - Praveen Kumar

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:09 GMT)

yuvaraj singh should be included under all circumstances.we cannot select odi squad based on IPL matches. Rohit sharma got enough chances, but he did not utilize them.it is mere waste of time to give more chances to him( bec no other player got so many chances). rest all is fine. good team selection.sad thing is yuvaraj singh is not included.he is very gud seam player.

Posted by gauravk on (May 4, 2013, 8:09 GMT)

Only Dhawan and Vijay as openers. I think we needed some more depth and experience in opening position given the English conditions. Little short in experience with no back-up. @ Raghunandan .. remember Vijay plays for CSK but Rahane doesn't.

Posted by Idavai on (May 4, 2013, 8:09 GMT)

Very good selection. Dropping Gambhir and Yuvraj is the way forward for the Indian team. Rohit is a failure in the international arena. The message has to go out loud and clear that this is the last opportunity for him..The only sore point is that Ishant is still in the squad. Shami could have been tried.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:09 GMT)

how can selectors do this .they picked murali vilay who dont know how to play in swing condition and not yuvraj singh.

Posted by Awadhwal on (May 4, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

It is shocking to see Gambhir out ..and Vijay in similarly yuvraj out ...rohit in Two most important players ousted for such a huge tournament!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

india needs to get a proper opening combination. i think that maybe the reason murali vijay is picked.frankly speaking he does deserves a chance as he hasnt exposed so much.every one knows the wekaness of sehwag and gambir . but i think yuvi should have taken and rohit should been dropped.judging a player based on ipl performance is not good , rohit has been a consistent performer in ipl not in ODI's..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

why rohit sharma...... he is a king of IPL and lamb in international cricket......

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

my playing xi would be vijay,dhawan,karthik,kohli,raina,dhoni,jadeja/mishra,ashwin,bhuvaneshkumar,irfan,ishant. this will be a great combination but at any cost yuvi and gambhir should be selected instead of rohit and vijay. politics playing a major role in indian cricket all the time.

Posted by YusuF_Sukhsari on (May 4, 2013, 8:07 GMT)

Surprise to see Murli Vijay still in team & Rahane & Yuvi is out?? it seems like whoever will play in chennai team will be included in indian squad without any performance & Rahane, Raydu wll b excluded. at one point i m happy that rahane is not included as dey dont give him any chance & he has lost his confidence by carrying water bottle since last one yr... atleast he will get his confidence back by playing in national league. Rohit sharma has failed at international standard but his inclusion is understandable as his performance is good in IPL. little disappointment of not seeing Praveen kuman in this squad

vinay kumar?? r u kiddin me?? what on earth did he do to get a place in the side?? did the selectors forgot the bowling of bhuvi nd shami ahmed in the death against pak in T20 as well as in the last odi?? they can bowl much better in swinging conditions.. except vinay the team is alright...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:06 GMT)

The international teams have already figured out how to bowl to Yusuf. He is only a one dimentional batsman. M Vijay is a waste of time in my opinion, instead they should have considered Sanju Samson. Oh well I guess in time he will get a look at :)

Posted by KaptainKool on (May 4, 2013, 8:06 GMT)

Yuvraj in place of Jadeja and Rahane in place of Vijay would have been better options. Also don't know how effective will Rohit be in English conditions.Selectors could have gone with Unmukt in his place. I think IPL form is given preference over domestic cricket here. Rest of the team is more or less expected.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:06 GMT)

How absurd. India's best batsman, and a fast-scoring one, C. Pujara, who ought to open ahead of both Vijay & Gambhir, is still to make his ODI debut!. Gambhir & Yuvi had not done much wrong though, not on ODIs. Yuvi is an allrounder who ought to bat lower than 4 so that Raina can bat higher. Batting at 6 or 7, Yuvi competes with Jadeja, who is far superior bowler. So that's why he is out. Vinay Kumar gets hammered in international cricket. Pankaj Singh would have been better. Overall, it's a good team though.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

I can bet wid anyone in dis world, dis team cant win champions trophy..how can some one select players like rohit, vijay, and vinay kumar?

Posted by Nitsdoc24 on (May 4, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

India have made a huge mistake in dropping Yuvi nd rahane. Both are good and experienced players..Vijay and Rohit are no way near to them.Really bad selection..IPL Based. And I support mishra's selection coz ashwin is very inconsistent. Also Gambhir should show some form in domestic matches to deserve a place in the team.Karthik is also a very good selection. Can bat both as an opener and middle order batsman

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

why vinay kumar???i would have taken p kumar hes more suited to english conditions and no match winner yuvraj,no chance indian going to get out off the group

looking good young team well done indian selecters. Good to see dinesh karthick come back. Karthik is more valueable player the vijay.

Posted by thinkgood on (May 4, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

Guys, Vinay Kumar and Ashoke Dinda may not be as good as Zaheer Khan, but they are good utility players. They are much better than Ishant who has not learnt form so many greats such as Wasim Akram and Waqar Yunis. What's the point in having hyped up players in the team who dont perform in the international level? Ashoke Dinda must have been dropped due to his poor form shown in the IPL. Vinay may give runs but also get wickets.

Posted by Ankurjain18 on (May 4, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

Why Murali Vijay and not Gautam Gambhir and where is Praveen Kumar who can ball those banana swings in England ? I guess couple of bad decisions again from BCCI owing to make the team on the performance in IPL.

Posted by crindo77 on (May 4, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

Mixed bag; really happy to see Rohit Sharma. Not so happy to see Vinay Kumar. Gambhir was never in contention, while Yuvraj will be missed. Who are they planning to open with? Dhawan and Vijay? Good plan, give them more time to open together ahead of SA tests. Btw whats up with picking Mishra? He wont get a game ahead of all the CSK staff. A few passengers. And if Raina comes up short against the short ball AGAIN, whats the plan then? He's still pulling with his eyes closed in IPL.

oh cmon u just cant select player on behalf of their ipl performances. this is international cricket. gambhir n rahane must have a place against rohit n vijay.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

good Team for INDIAN selections I hopefull best of the team. But Umesh yadhav ----->>>>>> Praveenkumar

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

The New Generation team is going to England for Champions Trophy...............First time, a team without proper settled opener is going for a big tournament.................No Sachin, Sehwag or Gambhir......................................What will Murali Vijay do in ODIs????

Open the innings??? Thats the last thing which any Indian fan would expect.....

Posted by Nishant2012 on (May 4, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

i am shocked!! vijay, vinay kumar and mishra? gautam and yuvi should have been there india dont need 3 spinners at all in english condition... India will b knocked out in group stage itself..!! real shame!!!

Posted by king78787 on (May 4, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

WHY have they dropped yuvraj?! The best ODI all rounder india has, takes wickets and hits big.Mishra desrves a go over ashwin based on recent form and B Kumar is more incisive than V Kumar My XI for india in the champions trophy:Dhawan,Vijay,Kohli,Raina,Yuvraj,Jadeja,Dhoni,B Kumar,I Sharma,Mishra and Yadav.

Posted by QingdaoXI on (May 4, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

I think with this squad we will not qualify for finals. Why on earth that Vijay and Wayard Vinay are in the squad. I hope Vijay gets injured and Rahane comes in and Shami Ahmed comes in for Vinay. and Yes Sir Jadeja was good on Indian pitches it doesnt mean he is better than Yuvi. Yuvi should have been there in place of Mishra or Jadeja.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

This is not fair selection. Vijay is not fit for ODI but he is selected but Gambhir who is in form in IPL has not been selected

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

maybe rohit sharma would play for the India wearing MI Jersey!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

instead of Vijay should have selected Yuvraj.....very bad selection in batting part...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

team India need good wishes like(All the best)

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

I would have taken up a chance with Pujara as an opener. Hope Vijay proves me wrong, but i can only see a deer in headlights in seaming conditions. Dropping Gambhir and keeping Misra are real good moves. Also dropping Yuvi a move in right direction given we have Pujara, Karthik and Raydu in the mix but is he that unfit or woeful with the bat?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

On What basis Rohit holds his place? How come Vijay came in to team ahead of Rahane & Pujara? Why Yuvi is dropped? baffling selection..

Posted by NikhilAsrani on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

Hats off to Murali Vijay. He seems to get selected in the Indian Team without even performing in the domestic tournaments of the respective tournament. Other cricketers need to learn the art from him of not performing and getting selected in the team.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

Why Rohit Sharma has been prefered to Yuvraj ?? Yuvi can bowl few overs and gives more options for Dhoni. Rohit's selection it totally based on IPL form ....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

good team selection but i was expecting Bisla in the team. i hope he will get chance in future

Posted by gk0808 on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

I think selectors made a blender mistake not choosing praven kumar and yuvi ,

opening bowling combination of two kumar , would have been great in english condition ,other thing i feel sorry for rahane ,i am very surprised to see vinay kumar and ishant sharma , lack of death bowling ability will cost india sorry to say i am totally unhappy with the selection ..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

Where is Ambati Rayudu ???

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:00 GMT)

My Playing Eleven shall be...............M Vijay,Shikhar Dhawan,Virat Kohli,Suresh Raina,MS Dhoni,Ravindra Jadeja/Dinesh Karthik/Rohit Sharma,Irfan Pathan,R Ashwin,Bhuvneshwar Kumar,Umesh Yadav,Ishant Sharma/Vinay Kumar...........

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 8:00 GMT)

Happy to see Dinesh Karthik in lineup.....! hopes he will make use of this well deserved opportunity to cement his place. Rohit getting extendended opportunity in yet again in international arena should prove his critics wrong

Posted by Prasoon.Mangal on (May 4, 2013, 8:00 GMT)

What is the case with Manoj Tiwary? Never allowed to play when he is in the team. One bed IPL and now he is dropped. Few good IPL matches for Rohit and he is in despite failing mammoth times.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:59 GMT)

perfect team..but M vijay is not at his best

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:59 GMT)

Good that Gambhir is dropped, but I strongly feel Yuvraj should be in the squad!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

Though DK is selected in the squad, I am unsure if he gets a chance in the playing eleven

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

my team would be.........

dhawan,vijay,kohli,raina,rohit,dhoni,jadeja,ashwin,pathan,bhuvneshwar,yadav......................

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

Would have liked Pujara instead of Vijay but still an awesome team.. It was very important to have all the performing youngsters in the team and they did just that.. Good Job selectors.. We win or not these are the future of Indian ODI Cricket..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

Yuvraj, Rahane and Shami are out of the team that is ridiculous. The thing which hirts me more is the inclusion of Vinay kumar and Sir Jadeja on England pithches. What these guys have done wrong.

Posted by ibbani on (May 4, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

Expected team,Rohit wasted by given an opportunity instead of other good players in the country. He is a good IPL player, but not an international player when selected to Indian team. Hope he does not get a chance in playing 11, instead Karthik comes in.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

If Ganmbhir is dropped what Murali vijay is doing while we have more young guns like Mandeep Singh, Ajinkya Rahane

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

well selected, all inform players r in, gambir is strugling, lovely selection

Posted by Neeta on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

M.Vijay has no technique to survive in foreign conditions..at least this decision is a wrong one by the selectors. Also no Praveen Kumar is a shocker considering how he was our best bowler during our horror England Test series in 2011. Yuvraj I think had it coming as he had shown no signs of form inspite of hitting a few sixes here and there. But Gambhir should have been there instead of M.Vijay, Praveen Kumar instead of Vinay Kumar. Otherwise it is an ok squad. Hope to see Rohit Sharma come good again after the umpteen chances he has got so far.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

the worst indian squad I seen..no yuvi,,no sehwag,,no gautii....yuvi wud hav been on the place of m.vijay..I think n committee forgot its England pitches..:)

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

surprise surprise....yuvraj dropped he has always performed well for India Rohit sharma getting another chance how many more will he get... Happy to see vinay kumar & shikhar dhawan back

Posted by sweetspot on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

Excellent team selection! We can harp about a few that didn't make it, but those that have been selected look good and should be up for the challenge. All bases covered by the look of it.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

again risk is taken based on ipl performances..HOPE IT CLICKS THIS TIME !!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

if ipl performances count then why domestic competitions rohit is waste in 5o over format why u drop yuvraj he is handy in one day format

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

good to see kathik, yadav, irfan back in the team unfortunately gambhir misses the chance !!!!! should have given a chance to mohit Sharma bowler of csk !!!! any ways all the best guys hope u win the trophy !!!!!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

dropping gambhir and yuvraj on form is ok but what has M vijay done in limited overs format to get a recall, rahane would have been a better choice

Posted by ODI_BestFormOfCricket on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

why is vijayi, t's ridiculous. If mishra and karthik recalled on basis of ipl performance, then the same should be for gambhir if not yuvaraj. Hope vijay will save BCCI from embrassing.

Posted by HarwinderSinghBRAR on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

Very sad to know about yuvraj singh, the selectors were about to make the similar mistake during world cup selection, but still they don't know the value of yuvi, surprised!Come on yuvi, show them you are the best

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

praveen kumar should be in for ishanth sharma. 1.dhawan 2.dinesh karthik 3.virat 4.rohit sharma 5.raina 6.dhoni 7.irfan/jadeja 8.ashwin/mishra 9buvi 10.vinay kumar 11.umesh yadav will be the combo i think. bt i dont think vijay deserves a place. he played well aganist aus on spin tracks bt failed on seaming tracks in chennai during ipl. rayudu must have given a chance

Posted by Kameps on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

Good selection but why dropped shami Ahmed even after good show in last few matches

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

Dhoni has finally completed his surgery of Indian Team by getting all seniors removed one by one. Gambhir, Sehwag, Zaheer, Harbhajan, Yuvraj etc. Only Sachin left ODIs on his own terms.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

why murali vijay is there...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

i personly feels that viru shold hv given a chance in SA

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

yuvraj dropped are you serious? bci is a joke

Posted by gkautish on (May 4, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

this is team DHONI not team INDIA most of d guys are CSK guys....this is nonsense...what is vijay doing in this team.... and why yuvi is not there?...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

Ideal starting 11, 1. Vijay/Karthik 2. Dhawan 3. Raina 4. Kohli 5. Dhoni (C/WK) 6. Jadeja 7. Ashwin 8. Umesh 9. Bhuvneshwar 10. Ishant 11. Vinay/Pathan

Looks amazing & youthful for the seaming conditions of england.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

Gambhir's exclusion is surprising. He hasnt performed that bad in ODIs and T20s. Murali Vijay cant even make it to Chennai's playing eleven and has been included in the squad. Somehow his bad performances over the last year in Ranji Trophy, IPL have gone unnoticed. Fishy.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:54 GMT)

its too harsh on Gambhir... he was playing well in initial games of ipl.. n i think praveen kumar should have been included too in place of irfan pathan..

Posted by vb03 on (May 4, 2013, 7:54 GMT)

They have to add Pujara in place of Vijya for stability at top order on England fast tracks. No need 3rd spinner. Yuvi has to get chance as an alrounder.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:54 GMT)

without Yuvi it won't be possible for India to win the CT13!!! that's wat i think....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:54 GMT)

If there is anyone who is not getting his due in Indian Cricket, its Ajinkya Rahane. Please dont make another Wasim Jaffer out of him. He is still young and raring to go. Rohit Sharma has been given enough chances. I understand he is in divine form now. But you cant depend on the man. On Rahane, you can. Sad to see him always getting sidelined.

Posted by kuldeeprockkzzzz on (May 4, 2013, 7:54 GMT)

o cmon u should have gambhir and rahane in place of vijay n kartik. this is not ipl .

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

gud squad .....except the fact that why rohit sharma is given a chance again while many uncapped players are performing well....rohit form is seasonal thing ...it may change day to day.. match to match...

Posted by QingdaoXI on (May 4, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

Selectors why Ajinkya Rahane and Shami Ahmed are dropped, they should have been given some more chances. I support Mumbai indians, but Karthick was only good in first 4-5 matches after that he is flopped. If Rahane and Yuvraj are dropped due to poor form than why Vikay is included, Dhoni dont do this politics. Drop Vijay asap and why on the earth we need 3 spinners in the squad in England Conditions. I still hope Yuvraj, Rahane and Shami should be included in place of fopped Vijay, Vinay and Mishra.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

all the best team india..... dhoni team will be at their best

Posted by FAB_ALI on (May 4, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

Thumbs Up!!! to the selection committee. Well balanced Team..only problem will be the opening batsmen..who will accompany Dhawan??? Not going by the names and based on the performances, selection seems quite good. But, I still doubt if the Mumbai Indians stars can deliver for India at the international level.

Posted by Rathoreeeee on (May 4, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

Why they have dropped Yuvraj..? He is not playing well in IPL Thats why ? I think they have selected according to the IPL form of the players.. like Karthik, Vinay and all.. Anyways its not bad. My Best XI will be.. Sikhar, Vijay, Kohli, Rohit/Karthik, Raina, Dhoni, Sir Jadeja, Irfan, Bhuvneshwer, Ashwin, Umesh.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

The list looked great till I saw the last name!! LOL!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

really looking forward to shikhar dhawan's batting in the champions trophy. still can't get over his phenomenal strokeplay against the aussies. too bad two of the 2011 world cup heroes got axed. the pitches in england call for experience.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

Vinay kumar ? select me then also i can also give 20 runs in one over

Posted by ankurc_27 on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

How abot this for a playing 11... Rohit Dhawan Kohli Raina Dhoni Jadeja Pathan Ashwin Bhuvneshwar Ishant and Umesh?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

Well our country is hardly going to win matches . I think this because there is not much experience in this side and also we have matches against strong opponents like South Africa , Pakistan and West Indies , all this three play well in the Swinging and Fast Bowling Conditions . We need Gambhir , Yuvraj , Sehwag .

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

I am happy for vinay kumar, all the best

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

I am suprised that selectors left out yuvi nd gautam are not selected.they needed 1 more chance.they did d biggest mistake by dropping sehwag.they should have also taken sreesanth as he can swing the ball really well both ways.not happy with this team.sreesanth will be back against south africa

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

best odi team in indian cricket

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

Hmm .... gud selecion...........................

Posted by NikSN on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

I wonder why Mishra was preferred over Ojha?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

This is very unfair on yuvi.

Posted by androyuvi on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

WoW.. AM so excited about this team, and I am happy to see some brave decisions from the selectors. Good or bad, let try some of these youngsters, and hopefully Dhoni can repeat some of his magic make this talented lot a good team.

Posted by SudheerYVN on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

Not impressed with M Vijay selection...

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

Surprise... Yuvraj not in the squad..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

well done by selecting irfan pathan

Posted by jay_vkjay on (May 4, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

Gambhir's exclusion expected. But Yuvraj is a big tournament player. Cheteshwar Pujara instead of Murali Vijay will be more interesting. Shami Ahmed for Vinay could have been better. Virat Kohli should have been named vice-captain. All the best team India.....

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

this for CSK team.... not a india team select MR. sandeep patil.

Posted by paddukandimalla on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

why not Gambhir .. why vijay .. five players from csk

Posted by Narbavi on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Praveen kumar must be wondering where he went wrong not to be picked for the champions trophy!!

Posted by shailesh_itech on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Murali Vijay in ODI squad. This selection makes me wonder because even gambhir is playing better than Vijay now a days. Ajinkya Ranhane could be better selection instead of Vijay.

Posted by kjzala1188 on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Well Well Well Best Team But Pujara Deserve in This Squad.

Posted by Vibhormbic on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Still no Praveen Kumar? Pathetic..

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Good to c gambhir not in the squad but sorry for Maharaj sorry Yuvaraj!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by biju666 on (May 4, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

y vinay kumar...? he s not gud as praveen and y no yuvi...? then instead of vijay, GG r Pujara should b there..?

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:49 GMT)

What sin has rahaney done ? He should have been there instead of Vijay !

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:49 GMT)

Why has India dropped Yuvi? Big tournaments like this bring out his best!

Posted by lovckt on (May 4, 2013, 7:49 GMT)

dropping gambhir is good but why rahane or manoj tiwari dropped? pujara is best option then MURLI VIJAY.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:49 GMT)

Shami Ahmed is better than Vinay Kumar is useless..!

Posted by Cricketfan101 on (May 4, 2013, 7:48 GMT)

Good about time all non preforms got dropped

Posted by Narabavi on (May 4, 2013, 7:47 GMT)

Vijay??? ohhh..for what? This is not a Test championship. Wasn't expecting this at all.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:47 GMT)

I don't think why Yousuf Pathan is ignored every time.. he is talented batsman who can change the course of the match.. he should not be dropped from the squad.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:47 GMT)

Why Murali Vijay has been selected over Ajinkya Rahane . The performance of both the players are the same & i don't know why selectors have made blunder by selecting Murali Vijay

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:47 GMT)

Gambhir Should have been there. Its bad he dint make it.

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:46 GMT)

The decision to drop Gambhir is appropraite.. But why Yuvraj! I guess he's done well in England in the past!!!!!!!!

Posted by   on (May 4, 2013, 7:46 GMT)

This is unexpected that yuvraj not in final squad....how M Vijay in squad. If they consider test against Australia, then this is fully wrong.

Posted by Lakpj on (May 4, 2013, 7:46 GMT)

Batting looks ok, but bowling isn't strong enough to trouble good teams in English conditions. They will surely miss Zaheer. Even in batting players like Dinesh Karthik, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma haven't proven a lot in International cricket. With this team India have to play really well if they are to overcome Pakistan and South Africa in their group.

Posted by Ranta on (May 4, 2013, 7:44 GMT)

No Gambhir I can Understand, But no Yuvraj ?

What's wrong with him ?

Surprise to me is Murli Vijay. Lucky boy of Indian Cricket. Rest every one deserved to be there. Sad for Rayudu not making cut. In future may be.

Posted by allysvalley on (May 4, 2013, 7:44 GMT)

shell shocked to see gambhir and rahane dropped!Appaleed by the selection of Vijay who is not even being picked by his franchisee!Devastated!

Posted by gnanzcupid on (May 4, 2013, 7:44 GMT)

Best thing about the squad is inclusion of dinesh and non inclusion of harbhajan singh
