Will speak on corruption when time is right - Dhoni

India captain MS Dhoni remained unforthcoming when asked about the corruption issues in the IPL at his first press conference in England, ahead of the Champions Trophy, saying he would speak on the subject when the time was right. Dhoni, who had not been allowed to answer such questions before leaving Mumbai, only said that the reputation of Indian cricket had not "gone" and that some individuals had been more mentally weak than others.

"If I have not answered Indian journalists, there is no reason why I should answer you ... at the right time (I will speak)," he said in response to the first question on corruption in Birmingham.

Dhoni said he did not want to speak on the issue at the moment because he wanted to "keep our side away from everything as of now."

When asked if the image of Indian cricket had taken a hit, Dhoni said: "It is not that the reputation has gone. If I go ahead to explain that I would rather answer his question also. When the right time comes, I will answer it.

"As of now, I don't think we have lost the opportunity because whatever the set up is throughout the world or any sport, still you have some people who would be slightly mentally weak as compared to some of the others. I would have loved to elaborate but at the right time I will do it."

I know we have lost exceptional cricketers over the years, but there have always been new players who have stepped up to fill the void and gone on to become great players themselves. But I truly worry for Indian cricket in terms of captaincy. Never have we had a captain like MSD and I am not too sure we will have one like him ever, definitely not in the next few decades. MSD is your perfect captain, the kind of guy who, so far, has only theoretically existed. It's next to impossible to find a guy who is as good a captain and player as MSD is, under the reign of BCCI and shouldering the expectations of a cricket-crazy country like India. Legend!

MSD is right here. Regardless of who has asked him to not talk about spotfixing, he has to stay in the present. Talking about the past will only distract the team from the CT, and gain nothing. Let the police do their job, there's nothing to be gained by MSD saying a few lines about it.

I wish he is grooming the people so that someone next handle things in the way he does or even if does better than him, that would be fantastic

Double respect is what MSD deserves, I cannot even imagine how this guy is handling the pressures everywhere on every issue he passes by...

    1. Wins a series, people say opponents lost it, 2. Wins couple of World cups, people say luck favors MSD, 3. Wins IPL and CLT20, people say matches are fixed 4. Looses couple of series, gets black and blue from all around the corner of this planet. 5. Goes for a fresh tour, interviewed for lost games 6. Now this aura of IPL...and so on....

Full of Negativity...Man it needs a strong and tough heart to handle these kind of pressures...

Hope the young indian brigade performs well and get this Coveted trophy to INDIA. This ll surely erase the SPOT FIXING memories in INDIAN FANS who respect the cricket as their life.!! The Indian team line up is reasonably good. I think MSD is doing great to keep the team away from what is happening around. For India to succeed in the CT I think we should bowl first as for the 1st time our team has good bowling line up which can contain the other team and then with target in mind start the chase. This has most of the times worked in India's favour. Wish the team all the best for the coming series and success.

everything looking fine about team and morale, this time its more of young and form players came in from ipl. how far the form of t20s are gonna help in 50 over format with new rules. india need player like gambhir to hold innings together upto 45th over. gauti is a class player, form is temporary, class is parmenent. with good experience he is now 31.only he can play pace as well as spin. shikar, dinesh, rohit, murali, are very good players no doubt about that , but india need a player like gautham at the top to controll the situations along with runrate .when india looses 3 early wickets , dhoni cant save everytime. rohit and dinesh got chances but they are not up to potential . how jadeja performs in batting and his main qualification to be in the team as a bowling alrounder, on the fast and bouncy pitches .as we all know about murali vijays problems with quality pace, and forever inconsistant rohit.

Team India looks weaker this time compared to other strong teams :(

    Anyways my 11 is 1) Dhawan 2) Vijay 3) Kohli 4) Dhoni 5) Raina 6) Pathan 7) Jadeja 8) Ashwin 9) B.Kumar 10) Yadav 11) Vinay Kumar.

The opening pair has played well against Aussies bt still they lack experience. Kohli,Dhoni and Raina are in good form. Rohit Sharma always plays well in IPL but rarely for India. So he shd not be included in playing 11.

Pace dept. includes Pathan, V kumar, Yadav and B Kumar and all the players can swing the bowl very well at gud pace.

Spin dept. includes Ashwin, Jadeja and Raina. Though Amit Mishra performed well in IPL, the English conditions wont suit his spin much.

Both Batting and Bowlling is a concern and the burden of batting is with Kohli,Dhoni,Raina and Jadeja..

The thing about MSD is that he lives at the moment and does not dwell in the past or the future. He does things that are to be done at the moment and that gives immense clarity for anyone. You get to concentrate on the right thing and hence give it your best shot. Even losing becomes graceful when this guy is around. He gives enough credit to the opposition but keeps the dignity intact.

  • POSTED BY mrgupta on | May 31, 2013, 7:05 GMT

  • POSTED BY Naresh28 on | May 31, 2013, 6:36 GMT

@mysay - Dhoni is the type of person who wont dwell on the past. The IPL is gone and dusted. Problems occur in all sports and betting is rife all over the world. True tough characters in the team are the ones who can survive this period. From what I can see Sreesanth was the exact opposite

  • POSTED BY Naresh28 on | May 31, 2013, 6:28 GMT

@innocentguy - not really we have had Dravid, Kumble, Ganguly - these guys all contributed to India reaching No1 - great captains. The future is where we worry. And yes you are right when you say Dhoni is exceptional - as a leader he is great. He says the right things, does not worry about the past, really strong character. Virat Kohli should be groomed for captaincy and what a better leader than Dhoni. A talent like Sreesanth is wasted due to a poor mental character......he cant play with the boys!!!!

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2013, 6:12 GMT

Its strange hearing dhoni say that rohit is back up option for shikar & vijay while karthik is specialist middle order bat. by saying so he is doing injustice 2 all 4 them.he's unnecessarily putting pressure on openers incae they fail & putting pressure on karthik too. evrybody knows rohit is a classic middle order bat. if dhoni wanted an back-up opener, he should have selected rahane & let rohit play countycricket which would have done wonders 2 his game. this is such a short tournament with rain threat loomimg large, that u have 2 go with one settled combination, unless somebody is injured. hope dhoni gets his combo right, or else he may kill careers of 4 players, esp rohit who is widely considered 2 take sachin's place when he retires from tests.

  • POSTED BY on | May 31, 2013, 5:56 GMT

I think as skipper his job is to focus on games and not to answer questions. He needs to focus on team building and utilising resources well. This crap of fixing thing will go on till etrnity.

@@Akash Banik: So, Srikanth takes credit for creating GOD? Azhar takes credit for granting debuts to Dada, Dravid, VVS and all other players? No.. When MSD captained the T20 team in 2007, all of Dada's army - Viru, Bhajji, Yuvi were making comeback to international cricket.. And, Zak was just back from England and was just played one test series after comeback.. MSD played with Uthappa, Gauti, DK, Joginder, very young Rohit there and almost a similar squad in Australian VB series win.. He had the guts to play with Chawla and drop Viru to include Uthappa as opener.. Yes the big guys are from Ganguly era and no one is going to deny it.. But the credit goes to players than Ganguly.. Will someone credit Dhoni for whatever success the likes of Rohit/Virat/Bhuvi/Praveen/Ashwin had in their lifespan? No.. The ability of player is what makes them succeed and captain gets the credit for leading them well.. Not for the talent the players got..

  • POSTED BY Narbavi on | May 31, 2013, 4:00 GMT

@Akash Banik: Give the credit where its due, nobody created any team here, the players pick themselves and the captain leads them , that's it, ganguly fans do it all the time crediting him for the 2011 world cup victory, why is it necessary to take credit away from the players and dhoni all the time?

People just dislike MSD because they fear him I should rather say, they fear that there supporting team will loose against MSD's men. Here is a deal, when Lee Chong Wei is ranked world no.1 in badminton people from all around the world didn't really like him, cuz he was unbeatable but, when Lin Dan beat him everybody went crazy about Lin dan saying "He is the God" the fact is that people only like him cuz he beat Lee Chong Wei. The reason people still dislike MSD is that no other caption in the world has yet beat him/ his records. I am a big fan of captions like Kumar Sangakkara and Smith. But I like MS cuz he is just too 'cool', can handle any sort of situations. Unbelievable caption. I hope he brings Success to team India and I consider him a gift to the world.

  • POSTED BY satishchandar on | May 31, 2013, 3:03 GMT

The best thing about not answering first question is, you are avoiding second, third and till fiftieth questions.. MSD could have answered the first question but it will raise more questions and it might turn personal at some point as his boss is directly involved and media might turn to his wife as well.. Media does need to have moral responsibility to ask the reports to the police and not the opinions of MSD or others.. He is not the boss of Guru and it is the other way around.. MSD is not the one who should know about Guru does and it is the other way around..

  • POSTED BY mysay on | May 31, 2013, 2:48 GMT

WRONG ANSWER. He should have issued a statements of the "Match Fixing Scenario" and given the same recording to the English journalists. You just cannot play good cricket or even have the state of mind when a question this large looms over you. This should have been flushed out of the system. Every time India takes to the filed their game will be watched through magnified lenses, and this will not be looking for their technique or attitude. This should have been ironed out, but it was not, so India can kiss the Champions Trophy "Adios"

Some of the posters here find Srinivasan praise worthy?? I can't even imagine an Indian cricket fan talking like this. We need Srinivasan to go immediately so that We can set the house and more importantly IPL in order. Srinivasan has just spoiled the whole Indian cricket irreparably. The conflict of interest under which he is working...needs to end. BCCI and Indian cricket have become too opaque for the game's good.

  • POSTED BY RR_Dravid_Fan on | May 30, 2013, 20:05 GMT

I am Indian and why is everybody lambasting English press? He should be asked to speak out and make his stand clear, wrt IPL, CSK and BCCI. After all he is the Captain of Indian Cricket team and CSK captain and VP in India Cements. HE NEEDS TO SPEAK OUT. It doesn't matter much if that effects Champions Trophy. Right now, the first priority of every body related to Indian Cricket should be cleansing this mess. Once we set the house in order, we can ensure long term sustainable success. We can't brush everything under the carpet or wish away or put off for some later date. The time is now. We need to find that voice and take this opportunity to clean this mess. It is what is in the best interests of Indian cricket in the long term.

I always thought Imran is the best captain, then Mark Taylor and then Hansie Cronje. But now in my book MSD is even better than these. He may have got a team from Ganguly but the way he handles pressure as a captain, it's truly unbelievable. I still think nobody would've done(including my all time favorite Sachin) to promote himself above the man of the series 'Yuvraj" in a final, considering MSD's own poor performance until then and the amount of criticism he was taking until that final. Anyway, he takes criticism after winning a WC for India. He is not greatly talented batting wise but that doesn't matter to me(Remember India is not short of batting talent but is always w.r.t captain). Like someone said, he is better than an OLD PM who is as good as Dritharashtra in Mahabharat. Even at this age, he is more worried about his PM post than the country's fate.

Not sure what's so special about MSD's responses here. A lot of people here are praising Dhoni for being "cool" and what not!!! All he is doing is follow his godfather's (read Srini) instructions to keep quiet and behave like nothing happened. That's called running away from the problem rather than facing it. Acknowledging a problem is the first step in solving it. Besides, no one questions his abilities in the shorter versions of the game, it's the test matches where his batting and captaincy, in particular, are not up to scratch.

I agree with the sentiments shared by sichu_emerald. We all know MSD is massive hitter and as long as he is on the crease his team always has a chance to win the game.

What we don't necessarily know is how good a diplomat he is?

It is safe and easy to keep a distance from such people and activities and he is doing that very well. I think our politicians will do well to learn this trait from him.

I love the way he called them Mentally Week in such a way that it must have sounded compliment to them.

Anyway, I think this trophy is only one that India hasn't won during his tenure. So, I hope he does that this time.

As many pointed out here, Dhoni always talks sensibly.. Best Ever!! Long live MSD!!

Dhoni proves time and time again why he is such a great captain and leader and it's good that he is staying focused on the Champions Trophy. I've always supported him as a captain inspite of the 8-0 loss. It's good to see that he continues to prove his critics wrong everytime. I hope he doesn't retire from Tests by the end of this year. I sense that he is planning his retirement after India's tour to South Africa.

MSD says "If I have not answered Indian journalists, there is no reason why I should answer you ... at the right time (I will speak),". But what about the public? What about the fans who pay and pray for Indian cricket and cricket as general to succeed? MSD doesn't have to answer the journalists questions, but as a valued and much loved cricketer for millions of Indian's and non-Indian's around the world, as the captain of Indian Cricket team (its Indian cricket NOT BCCI cricket) MSD owes us his views and thoughts. So do every senior cricketer past and present. MSD owes us his thoughts before any other major cricket event overshadowing what happened in IPL. If you says its just a job and he is doing his job and nothing more, I can't agree with that. Any other job pays as much in terms of fame and money? What other job in Indian gives you legions of devoted fans? Cricketers are the face of cricket for us, are the torch bearers - tell us what YOU know. With power comes responsibility.

what he said was right only mentally weak players fall to bookies traps. Anyhow media people too asked the question at wrong time. what will Dhoni tell is it is not right, etc etc even if he wants.

I was one of the Haters of Dhoni, But as days pass by I am just Left speechless seeing at his Talent on the Game and Calmness in His Words. Its really Tough to be MSD. Being a Diehard fan of Sourav Ganguly I repeat those words but now its for MSD. Yes,

Dhoni - The Best Ever Captain in World Cricket!

  • POSTED BY IndCricFan2013 on | May 30, 2013, 14:09 GMT

I do not think BCCI or any one needs to guard MSD from answering questions. He is actually more matured and much better in handling questions on his own by answering like he just did with out diving into details than some else saying next question and asking MSD to keeping mum. This way at least criticism at him will stop, since he answers like how some are mentally weak than others and would love to elaborate at the right time. I think BCCI management and Indian politicians like are lot to learn from people like MSD on how to be polite at the same time make a point with out controversy.

Lot is at stake as far as indian cricket is concerned. When I say that I mean there are many out there (sadly in India too) who want india to fail badly this all corruption phase courtsey IPL is like an fast bouncer bowled at India now its in the hands of MSD & Co. whether they take eyes of the ball take a blow OR whack it for six over fine leg.

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2013, 13:46 GMT

@sichu_emerald: really? What would you say about captains given a team of no stars and won matches for their country shaping the team such as Fleming,Mark Taylor, Ranatung a, ganguly, Imran khan? Don't ever think all are fools around you.

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2013, 13:25 GMT

@Praful Desai- Sir, who, in your humble opinion, would have taken questions as direct as this better? MSD has the guts to say sensible things. The man has done enough and more for cricket, and he is the last person you must be criticising!

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2013, 13:22 GMT

Perfect Answer, Well done MSD... Keep focused, We know that your mental strength distinguished you from rest of all.

Dhoni has lot to prove here !! Lot is at stake as far as indian cricket is concerned. If India manage to pull this one off then dhoni's stature will reach even greater hights not only in indian cricket bt the world over as a man for whom nothing else matters than the sport. On the other hand if India godforbit makes an early exist from the tournament then there will be hundreas of articles written, Stupid News channel debates aginst him (IPL) maybe some ppl even want him to step down. I am not a dhoni admirer but I wish he could overcome evrything & prove yet again that he is legend in the making. All the very best MSD& Co. !! Make us proud !! # StupidIndiancricketfan.

  • POSTED BY realfan on | May 30, 2013, 13:14 GMT

thats what every captain should say :) :) happy that india got dhoni as captain..... i think he seems to be determined about this trophy, indians desperately need to show a good performance in this trophy..... my suggestions for team india is please play these players karthik, dhawan, kohli, rohit sharma, raina, dhoni, jadeja, irfan pathan, ashwin, bhuvi, umesh yadav, please no vijay, ishant... even rohit also. but dont have too many options there.....

  • POSTED BY on | May 30, 2013, 13:13 GMT

It's good to see someone sensible enough to say 'no' to the media instead of encouraging their childish gossip and speculation. The corruption case is still being investigated so it is not appropriate to give more gossip to the press to fill up their hours of air time or newspaper columns. I hope others will take a similar course so 'news' is worth following again rather than the sort of babble we are getting from Shane Warne today.

After 8-0 loss I had lost respect for his defensive apathetic captaincy style in test cricket. But I have never lost respect for his mental stability regardless of what life throws at him. This is one more example. You are the best captain in spite of that 8-0 loss.
