ICC Champions Trophy, 6th Match, Group B: India v West Indies at The Oval, Jun 11, 2013
ICC Champions Trophy - 6th match, Group B
India won by 8 wickets (with 65 balls remaining)
Played at Kennington Oval, London (neutral venue)
11 June 2013 (50-over match)

10.30am Bhuvneshwar Kumar to start things off. He has two slips and a gully.

10.25am The teams have lined up for the national anthems. Darren Bravo is the most enthusiastic of the West Indians when it comes to singing 'Rally round the West Indies".

Harlequin: "Not sure if there is a batsman called The Dentist, though I can think of a few fast bowlers who could lay claim to that nickname!"

Rohit: "Lets see how Indian Pace Bowlers use these overcast conditions today. #Optimism".

souvick: "In many ways, cricinfo is like the radio commentary. Because, in both cases the actual game gets mixed with the reporter's perception and the receiver's imagination. But the cricinfo has a certain edge over radio, it has the awesome feedback compilations mixed with reporting, by which, one gets to know what others alike are thinking about the game. And thus, it becomes a community show."

The Indian team in a huddle, with a cameraman hovering close behind. Gayle puts his helmet on as he gets set to put on a show. In the crowd, a Liverpool fan waves the India flag which also lists the last five times the club won the league title.

10.20am Great to hear from some partying Windies fans. Malcolm: "We're not sleeping here in Kingston! Have a full house party with the match on and the rum is already flowing. Hoping our hometown boys, Gayle and Samuels, can take this one home for the Windies."

Rohit Agrawal: "@ Barriston selmy... Very true.. What you have said.. I am standing in bus traveling within Singapore.. Holding handrail in one and mobile on the other and enjoying cricinfo updates... Thanks a ton cricinfo!!!"

Bilal: "Needless to say that there is a very high probability that Pakistan wont be in the semis; and after the batting performances they've put in, the simply don't deserve to be there."

Some words of advise from Mahesh: "MSD must switch the bowlers properly & take maximum advantage of overcast conditions. Bhuvi, Ishant, Umesh must keep good line & length. should ensure balls are pitched correctly, not to allow WI batsmen to attack. Must not forget that Gayle has played against them recently in IPL season. He is well aware of their bowling methods."

10.10am Most of West Indies' fans might be sleeping right now as it is the early hours of the morning, but all of Pakistan will be backing the boys from the Caribbean today, as Pakistan's only chance of progressing is if WI win today.

Pakistan will qualify only if Windies win both their remaining matches, and Pakistan beat India. Then Pakistan, India and SA will all have one win each, bringing NRR into play. If any of those results don't happen Pakistan are out.

ManjunathRV: ""Hello cricket enthusiasts" :) please don't call cricket enthusiast. The term seem to have a different meaning now."

The forecast is for a few showers through the day, let's hope the weather holds.

Toss A huge cheer as MS Dhoni wins the toss, India choose to bowl. MSD says his decision is because it is currently overcast which could help his bowlers. India are unchanged. MSD wants India's bowlers to improve their lines in the first 10 overs.

Dwayne Bravo says he would have bowled first as well, but now wants to forget the conditions and get a good total. it is not a bad track to bat first. Ramdin is out, Darren Sammy comes in and confirmation that Johnson Charles will keep. Asked whether the Ramdin issue has affected the side, Bravo takes his time to choose his words and talks about having to look beyond that.

Our first reader comment of the day, and it gets published since it isn't complaining about the XIs. Ser Barriston Selmy: "Talking to my Dad across seas I reminisced about my engineering college days, when without internet on phones how we used to get excited over hourly cricket score updates through costly SMS. And he spoke passionately about listening to Radio Commentary in his village. There is a different excitement about following sport without watching it. Irrespective of whether I watch cricket or not, I make sure I read the commentary. There is a certain thrill to that minimalism. Thank you Cricinfo."

As CK points out, Virat Kohli is playing his 100th ODI today, just 24 years old and he already has over 4000 ODI runs. And for a completely unnecessary comparison, Sachin Tendulkar at the same age had around 5650 ODI runs, but at 100 ODIs he has score only 3146 runs.

Ajith Pai: "Cricinfo has been such a companion during Office times! I stand up and look around to see all monitors showing Cricinfo. Managers' ones too! People huddled up in one PC catching the score! Whether its TV Radio or Cricinfo the excitement never abated! A huge shout out to our text commentators!" For more on us turning 20, check here.

Pal: "Barriston Selmy, very true. The excitement in reading the commentary while watching the matches live is great! My wife always complaints that I occupy both the television and the laptop during cricket matches and she is also forced to watch :-). Pity, she doesn't understand the thrill."

Randy: "Well, here is one West Indian fan who is up this early morning. Admittedly, it's also because of the excruciating pain a tooth is giving me and I'm counting down the time before the dentist opens...... Here's hoping India will not add to the pain!" Is there a batsman nicknamed The Dentist?

9.30am Hello cricket enthusiasts, the Champions Trophy hurtles along and it is time for India v West Indies today, the winner of which will be in touching distance of the semi-finals. The last time these two teams played an ODI in England, as our match preview points out, was back in 1983, when India's victory kicked off a boom for ODIs.

Still some time to go for the toss, fill the minutes by reading about Marlon Samuels, something of a loose cannon early in his career but has evolved into a senior player providing West Indies the ballast in the middle order.

One of the problems for West Indies today is that their specialist keeper Denesh Ramdin is out suspended, with Johnson Charles likely to don the big gloves. For those of you wondering about Charles' keeping skills, he was the designated keeper for Windward Islands in three matches in the domestic 50-over tournament as recently as this March, so he's not a total stranger to standing behind the stumps.

Nagraj Gollapudi explains here why R Ashwin needs to keep evolving if he is to consistently succeed at the international level.

And in case you missed it, here's a piece from the "Steven Seagal of stats" S Rajesh arguing why net run-rate does not work as a method of separating teams on equal points. Some perceptive comments from the readers as well.

If you are actually more interested in the scandals the IPL is embroiled in than in the Champions Trophy, here's the link to our full coverage of the controversies.

Plenty of praise coming through for Ishant

43.1

Jadeja to Narine, 4 byes, Narine goes for an extravagant lofted drive to a pitched up delivery from over the wicket, the ball spins too much, misses the bat and the stumps and the keeper to go for four byes

Anand: "To everyone's surprise, Ishant Sharma's figures are very impressive today, he is into his 7th over and has conceded only 16 runs so far, he surely deserves a wicket or two today."

43.2

Jadeja to Narine, 1 run, full and on the pads, clipped to backward square leg for a single

Sagar: "Amidst all the praises for Jadeja, very few seem to have taken notice of how well Ishant has bowled today. I remember him talking about being the leader of the bowling unit in the absence of Zaheer Khan, and that's what he done! Excellent spell."

43.3

Jadeja to Sammy, 1 run, a touch short, Sammy arches back and slaps that towards sweeper cover, can they get two, no just one

Ishant is back

48.1

I Sharma to Sammy, FOUR, pitched up and outside off, crashed past cover for four, all power from Sammy, who is playing a crucial hand here

Indraneel: "@Nikhil For the Windies that must like one of those movies where people take a wrong turn and land in a frightening place with a hideous murderous entity - in this case bearded, smiling, spinning monster called Sir Jad!"

48.2

I Sharma to Sammy, SIX, full ball and that is a massive hit from Sammy, Ishant goes for a yorker, he misses and goes for the maximum instead, a huge backlift and clean swing, sends that for a big six

48.3

I Sharma to Sammy, FOUR, short and outside off, Sammy wanted to clobber that over the midwicket boundary, gets a top edge and that flies down to third man for four more, West Indies are now 212, Sammy 35 off 27

48.4

I Sharma to Sammy, SIX, another six, Ishant was having one of those rare days when he bowled economically, it is still not a disaster, but he's now gone for 20 in his four previous deliveries, this was short and Sammy absolutely powers it over long-off for another boundary

48.5

49.1

Jadeja to Sammy, no run, full, flat and wide outside off, Sammy's swipe doesn't connect

49.5

Jadeja to Sammy, no run, thumped down to long-off, but Sammy declines the single

49.6

Jadeja to Sammy, FOUR, and he finishes it off in superb style, another thunderous straight hit, over Jadeja's head for four more, Sammy finished on 56 off 35, West Indies have been lifted to a competitive 233, last two overs yielded 35 runs and that too with nine wickets down

So 51 off the final four overs, the same as they hit in the preceding 15 overs. Second fastest 50-plus partnership for the 10th wicket in ODI cricket. at one stage, they looked headed for about 190, before Sammy showed off his power-hitting skills, a terrific response to being dropped in the previous game. And again highlighting india's long-standing troubles at the death.

Before that last phase though, India's bowlers had plenty to be happy about. Ravindra Jadeja got his first five-for in ODIs, and had the best returns by an Indian in the Champions Trophy as he ripped out the top and middle order after Johnson Charles' half-century. Ishant Sharma kept it tight for most of his spell, till being taken apart in the penultimate over, R Ashwin remains a bankable spinner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar continues to impress, even in conditions like today where there was hardly any swing or seam. The main worry in the bowling was Umesh, who continues to be expensive - a career economy-rate of 6.32 is worrying signs for someone looked at as the country's spearhead.

Can India chase this down easily? Will West Indies' bowler be able to defend this total? We'll get to know soon enough. Join us in about 30 minutes, around 2.40pm for the chase.
