A period of intense turmoil marked the lead-up to the World Cup for West Indies, and their faltering start against Ireland seemed to promise more disappointment. They rallied back with a few strong performances, including a record double-hundred by Chris Gayle, but were always in danger of elimination before they beat UAE and the weather to set up a quarter-final clash against New Zealand (US only).
