Gohar, Butt jailbreak takes Pakistan into final

  shares 205

Pakistan Under-19s 205 for 7 (Shakeel 45, Gohar 37*) beat England Under-19s 204 for 7 (Rhodes 76*, Higgins 52) by three wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Zafar Gohar and Amad Butt starred in a jailbreak with the bat, getting Pakistan Under-19s over the line in a tense semi-final against England Under-19s in Dubai.

Gohar and Butt came in when Pakistan were in the doldrums at 142 for 7 chasing 205. The pair were not under immense pressure with the asking rate at any point, but a few fielding lapses from England aided Pakistan's steady journey towards the target. It came down to four needed off the final over and Butt sealed the win with a boundary over mid-off, sparking wild celebrations.

Gohar and Butt came in with 63 needed off the last 13 overs. Gohar, the left-hander, glided a boundary to third man before Butt chipped another over mid-off to ease the nerves. They impressed with their temperament, choosing to loft only if the ball was in the right length. The pair kept rotating the strike and, with every single, raised the hopes of the Pakistan team and their supporters in the stands.

Pakistan needed 38 from the last six overs but a tight two-run over from the captain Will Rhodes was followed by a ten-run over from the seamer Jack Winslade to ease the pressure, making it 26 off the last four. Winslade then made probably the costliest error of the day when he dropped a catch at long-off running backwards. The momentum took him towards the boundary but the ball spilled out and lobbed over the rope. It was an error similar to the one committed by India's Deepak Hooda in a crucial stage in the quarter-final, ironically against England.

England were left counting the damages as the equation came down to a run-a-ball with the pair unseparated. As the tension mounted, England failed to plug the singles and Pakistan emerged favourites, before reaching the target off the first ball of the last over.

Pakistan have so far been carried by Imam-ul-Haq's solid knocks at the top, but the chances of him playing a long innings were hampered when he pulled a hamstring early in his stint. Imam, the tournament's leading run-scorer, was struggling between the wickets but he released the pressure on himself with a couple of boundaries off the seamers, the first of which was smashed past mid-off.

Rhodes introduced spin towards the end of the Powerplay and it turned out to be a smart move. Offspinner Rob Sayer had been cut and swept for boundaries by Sami Aslam, but when Sami attempted another sweep, he was trapped lbw. It wasn't the last time Pakistan lost a wicket straight after a spinner came on.

It also wasn't the last time a Pakistan batsman fell going for shots. Hasan Raza tried to clear the off side off Rhodes but tamely chipped it to mid-off. Imam got forward to the legspinner Rob Jones but failed to cover the line. He was given out lbw but replays showed the ball would have missed the leg stump. Pakistan slipped to 57 for 4 when Kamran Ghulam tried to pound a short one from Jones but found short midwicket.

Saud Shakeel and Ameer Hamza played steadily against the spinners, with Hamza sweeping full tosses from Jones to the boundary. Shakeel scored four boundaries in his 45 and the pair looked comfortable against the seamers, too.

Rhodes decided to revert to spin and for the second time, was rewarded instantly. Sayer struck in the first over of a new spell, trapping Hamza lbw while he attempted the sweep. There was further trouble when Saifullah Khan and Shakeel were caught down the leg side trying to hook the seamer Matthew Fisher, the best of the England seamers with figures of 10-3-21-2. As England clawed back, things heated up and a few of their players engaged in a verbal spat with the batsmen. Pakistan, though, had the last laugh.

Pakistan were on top for most part in the first innings, too. The noon start was expected to be friendlier for the batsmen, but the trend of early top-order wickets continued. England were tied down by the seamers, who picked up early wickets, but later found the spinners equally hard to deal with. The acceleration towards the end came from Rhodes, who made an unbeaten 76 off 79 balls.

It hurt England that their best batsman against spin, Ben Duckett, fell just after he had worked for a start. Duckett kept looking for scoring opportunities, pulling the seamers over the infield and fetched two consecutive fours off Zia-ul-Haq on the on side. However, he got his placement wrong in the same over, attempting another pull, and fell to a sharp catch from Imam-ul-Haq at midwicket. Duckett's handling of India's spinners helped England get over the line in the quarter-finals but it was left to his colleagues to handle Pakistan's spin-heavy attack.

The boundaries had dried up for England after the loss of three wickets for 38. The ploy of taking the Powerplay as early as the 17th over didn't work as the overs yielded only 15 runs. Rhodes broke a boundary drought of 98 balls with a pull off Shakeel to deep square leg. Ryan Higgins made a subdued fifty, scoring just one four in his 99-ball stay.

Rhodes' positive knock was responsible for taking England to 204. He was aggressive between the wickets and used his feet against the spinners, charging Gohar and launching him over deep midwicket. England scored exactly 50 off the last five overs, thanks to Rhodes and Sayer. Rhodes reached his fifty off 65 balls and along with Sayer, took 17 off the final over. In the end, it wasn't enough.

Pakistan will now meet the winner of the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa.

Great Performance, i Think we should still have won with much more ease if it had not been for Fisher and Jones, in the End what saved us were only 2 Things:

    1) Patience 2)Drop Catch from Winslade for a Maximum 3) Misfielding on Cover for a Boundary 4) Extreme Pressure 5) Watching the Ball carefully Because Fisher was coming up with Superb Short balls. 6) Confidence, Why, because any U-19 Team would flattened up after Going 7 Down

Wonderful win for Pakistan. A refreshing bunch of all-rounders and never ending batting lineup. Tailenders never came out to bat. Saud Shakeel's maturity was treat to watch did not look like an u19 player very cool headed no media hype for him but great showing. Zafar Gohar was same like Saud Shakeel and Amad Batt did not show any nerves normally attributed to tailenders and went through. Pakistan won despite Sami, Imam, Raza and Kamran missed out. If they come good in final then pakistan can win the cup any given day. English will feel that winslade lost it for them and english batsmen showed that they never faced quiality spin in the tournament before the semi.

It should be accepted if it not hurt Pakistan because talent don't need money but cricket need money. Its long debate. This is not time for that debate. Glade to see when indian match was not live on ESPN Cricinfo

  • POSTED BY Sheikasif on | February 25, 2014, 6:38 GMT

Congrats Pakistan U19 players. Pakistan fans should learn to respect other nations. Why bring India and other non-issues into discussion. If anything, the defeat of the big three nations prove they deserve more money to develop their players (money that they contribute more anyway and on which nations like Pakistan are dependent on). Enjoy your victory but don't spoil the fun by embarrassing your nation with cheap shots at other nations. Best wishes for the final. May the best team win.

After reading this I have drawn an inference that the writer of this piece believe that it was more a case of England losing than Pakistan winning. It seems that he writer has deep rooted malice against achievements of Pakistan cricket. Let me dilate upon the sole reason of Pakistan's win: "TRUE GRIT and CHARACTER in the field". Its a shame that even educated people like the write of the aforementioned piece fail to live above personal biases.

It's nice that Pakistan fans have something to get get excited about, even if it is only u19s cricket. Pakistan fans don't have much to shout about, senior team is not very good and they play home games in front of no one in a another country. There's no money in Pakistan cricket, they have to rely on crumbs that BCCI, ECB and CA throw to the other nations. So when the rare good day comes along, a lot of noise needs to be made. Well done Pakistan, you played well and were just that bit better than England today, enjoy the moment.

Good performance by Young Pakistan team and commiserations to young talented English side who remain bit unfortunate. Cricket like any sport is a source of bringing harmony friendship, respect, love, excitement and peace for the fans and hurting anyone feeling though emotions and sentiments are part and parcel of game, especially in our part of world (sub-continent).Pakistan is rich in cricket talent like other nation, people everywhere love to play and watch, currently no international cricket in Pakistan is very frustrating and hard to bear which we hope to revive v soon but appreciation should come from the cricket fraternity that even in present circumstances our team is performing exceptionally well. The new ICC structure, to be controlled by Big3 is almost implemented, hope it will make game more popular and excited and opportunities will be given fairly to all teams to play against each other.

in fact under19 teams have no stability.so dont considerthis win as something great.pakistan surrendered meekly to india and then they beat the team that beaten india.like that australia lost to afganisthan.india lost to sreelanka in the show match but thrashed the same team in the context for the 5th place play off.i think only south africa has shown some sort of stability in this tournament and only they deserved to be the winner

What great entertainment for an U19 match! A Thriller!

The English lads were not allowed to put up a huge total but they defended what they had like a top team. Well done! Some great talent that im sure we will be seeing very shorty on the BIG stage.

Pakistan U19 has now reached the semis and beyond 7 out of the 11 times they have played in the U19 WC and are the only back to back champions. The Pakistani boys should be very very PROUD of themselves for producing such a great performance under pressure! When the whole world's eyes were on the team they have proved themeslves to be of top class cricket pedigree.

Fought like cornered tigers, winning the cup will be bonus! Good luck champs!

Truly said....RESPECT can not be bought with money it can only be earned. BIG 3 got money Pakistan got respect from all true cricket lovers. They banned cricket in pakistan and guess what.....pakistan is still beating them all at all levels and keep producing world class talent. I want to tell one thing to ICC that actually this blockage of international cricket is working in favor of Pakistan. Because Pakistan is a nation if you will try to bar them they will come harder than before. I am a pakistani and i know my self that if you will try to stop/dictate me i will be more aggressive. So stop playing politics against pak cricket, it is never gonna hurt only thing is the fans getting deprived of international cricket. But now you come up with BIG 3 formula to dictate us. Let's see what it can achieve. One thing is for sure, World cricket is incomplete without pakistani flavor.

Well said, JG2704. Anyone who wishes to see a cricket loving country like Pakistan struggle (or even disappear!) is not a true cricket fan and will not get their wish.

Why do I say this? Because Pakistan have been involved in some of the greatest matches in the history of the sport, and you just cannot predict what they will do next!

They can beat anyone at any time. And of course their huge and passionate fanbase is a credit to the sport. I still remember the fantastic 92 test series where Pakistan beat England 2-1.

Salazar, there really is no need for your comments. It was a great match, and while some of the sledging from some of the English bowlers was disappointing, it was nice to see the teams respect for each other at the end.

Wish Pakistan all the best for the final (esp if they play Australia!) and hope that soon they can play international cricket in Pakistan again. I can assure the doubters that TV and the fans will very much be interested in watching!

  • POSTED BY haq33 on | February 25, 2014, 1:11 GMT

Well played Pakistan but if you analyse carefully, it was England's fielding that let them down. They were lucky to get away with poor fielding in the QF and this time, they paid the price. It is bizarre for me that fielding standards are so low in Eng U19 and even more odd that pak u19 seem to have pretty decent fielding....so far. Also, there are plenty of genuine fans from big 3 nations who resent the big 3 concept, so please don't dig at the nations themselves or the fan bases. Really it is the boards and some notable ex-players who failed us. It is right that Pak continues to make its point, on the cricket pitch.

Either umpires should be removed from cricket or all LBW and caught behinds and run out should be over ruled by DRS. Why cheating through umpires is added by ICC. I declare ICC is inapt and run by cheaters because why all umpires wrong decisions are not reversed, you know there is something behind the close door.

  • POSTED BY JohnSnider on | February 24, 2014, 21:59 GMT

Pakistan is most amazing and exciting thing in cricket and they have fans all over the world. In Pakistan Pakistani internal cricket is much superior than any other country. Proofs is always in front of you. England beat India and Pakistan beat England this is the way Pakistan revenged and proved the superiority over all teams. Pakistan should not play in Money making IPL as truth is Pakistan is not real poor country only wealth is in few hands specially the people who runs the government and they give generously to cricketers.

There is no doubt that Pakistan is the one side that actually matters to world cricket. Can you imagine how boring cricket would be with collapses from good positions, mediocre fielding but on their day they are the best team in the world. You only have to look back at the recent few series and have a look at their record. We beat the likes of India @ India, South Africa in Africa and Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. The matches we lose are close or from good positions we should have won the game from. Now why bring this up? Well because it's a well known fact that the BCCI doesn't like Cricket Pakistan. BCCI have constantly denied our players from the IPL citing many "reasons" for our omission. FYI I'm only mentioning the BCCI not the millions of Indian cricket fans who would love to see Pakistani players playing in the IPL. So my only fear is that when the big3 come into power we may not get enough matches against competitive teams to be the side we are today. It'll be a travesty.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 21:35 GMT

Heroes don't make excuses. Heroes don't complain about lack of a home ground for almost their entire playing careers. Heroes don't choke when facing the barrel. Heroes don't hide behind "rankings" or "records". Instead, they seize the day, own the night, earn every inch, give nothing away and dictate the pace. That's who we are and that's how we roll. We. Are. Pakistan. Go get 'em!

Most disappointing day in cricket!! A team which lost in league phase badly & comprehensively, which deserved to be in semis, whose fans are master in absurdity while posting comments are through to the final. A team which won every match but lost in one match (in q/f) and most favorites to win the championship are out of the tourney. If you replay any match with any team, Pakistan would be comprehensively beaten by each of them. That's guaranteed!!

  • POSTED BY Desihungama on | February 24, 2014, 21:12 GMT

Absolute great fight by England considering there recent record against Pakistan Under 19. Just came bit short. As a Pak Supporter, I am really happy for our team as this is indeed a first step by putting yourselves in position to win a World Cup since what we are hearing from the Pak Camp that all teams - Men, Women, Under-19 have been asked or should I say have been tasked to lift all upcoming major trophies in year 2014. A bit too much to ask but given the fast changing world of cricket this is the only survival of Pakistan Cricket and I wouldn't have it any other way either. So I say Go Boys and in the words of Al Davis Just Win Baby!

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 21:12 GMT

To All Pakistani Fans: India was favorite and they performed like favorite but one bad day made them out of competition same can happen with any good team. This was a match full of twists and turns and I feel the final twist was the drop on the boundary late on in proceedings.

England have some promising youngsters. I've particularly like Ducket and Rhodes and I wonder if the former had stayed in for longer if we may have posted a much stiffer total.

Sad not to get to the final but we've been involved in a number of tight games - you win some, you lose some

This person indicated that Pakistan was a forgone conclusion (after beating India)and now seems to indicate that they are an inferior cricketing nation because they are not one of the ICCs big 3. It's a shame that he/she cant give any credit whatsoever to team Pakistan.

We all know how passionate the Pakistan fans are and if their games were played at home they would gather big support and I would like to say that despite being. I wonder how big England's support would be if they had to play all their home games in France.

Make it 6 out of 10. Its funny how the organizers make sure onlyo the two IND , PAK teams reaches final as they do not want an all Asian mouth watering final that is IND vs. PAK. From an Indian Fan.

excellent all round performance from the boys in green. restricted englands talented batting line-up to a very average score. despite haemorrhaging wickets consistently, the two stars of the show gohar and butt, managed to grind out a partnership worth its weight in gold. englands boys were too exuberant, and although their aggressive approach has worked against other opposition, they didnt have enough runs on the board to defend. pakistan can look forward to the final with high spirits indeed.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 16:34 GMT

Just goes to show how talented the Pakistani cricketers are. Given the extremely limited cricket opportunities and the immense pressure of a semi-final match, they played magnificently and showed character, composure and class. There has been no international cricket in Pakistan for the last 4 years but these guys have proved yet again that Pakistan can do very much with very little. Bravo gentlemen!

  • POSTED BY wapuser on | February 24, 2014, 16:33 GMT

Really impressed by the commitment of young boys. Our senior team is equally capable but they are struck with politics. Maybe the young guys are politics free and are more cohesive. Anyways, 2 out of BIG 3 have been knocked out, 1 to go. Weldone boyxx.

great match credit goes to both teams England lads fought well..both teams are equal but fortunes turned into Pakistan favour.now big question on big 3 two big3s are gone one left and if another big 3 goes tomorrow then it would be shame for all big 3s.i just don't like the word big..they shud have made any other name istead of big.

  • POSTED BY drnaveed on | February 24, 2014, 16:23 GMT

congratulations to the Pakistani team. two of the three Cricket's Contractors ( SO-CALLED , THE BIG THREE) are out of this under -19 world cup , one to go ..... yes, world cricket needs Pakistan , one cannot write Pakistan out of cricket.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 16:17 GMT

I was waiting for the victory since quarterfinal. It shows that pakistan A team will consider some of these guys in national team soon. As always all rounders did the the job for both ends. The catch dropp was the end of England dream. I am from AFGHANISTAN and I have been supporting pakistan cricket team since I came to know about cricket. It was a tensed match and my heart beat was at 120 km. MAY ALLAH ALWAYS GIVE U VICTORIES MY BROTHERS IN FAITH. AMEEN

  • POSTED BY Akhter786 on | February 24, 2014, 16:16 GMT

This was really sensational, arguably the edge-of-seat kinda finish. I wonder why Pakistani batting crumbles under the load of Chasing be it First class cricket, international, U19 or whatever. Fortunately their bowlers did it today with the bat also. But the DNA seems to be showing no signs of mutation at all when it comes to Pakistani batting especially chasing.

Nevertheless, this was a great win. Absolute morale booster when down and out. Just one more gritty show like this and The World Cup is all yours.. God willing GodspeedGodspeed........

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 16:15 GMT

Amazing Stuff..showing no nerves with U19 is just phenomenal...hats off to the youngster and I hope to seem them very soon replacing some worn out celebs of the existing international squad.

  • POSTED BY Zahidsaltin on | February 24, 2014, 16:13 GMT

Sami, Imam and Kamran need to start scoring against bigger teams too. Well played Ameer, Shakeel, Butt and specially Zafar Gohar. It wasn't easy at all to be 57/4 and specially after losing 3 wickets on 57. Pakistan will most probabily play South Africa in the finals, a really tough contest but I put my money on Pakistan.

  • POSTED BY Diamondback on | February 24, 2014, 16:13 GMT

What raw emotion and honesty by both sides. They gave it all they had. England clearly dominated the second half but nerves got to them and they made those crucial fielding errors. Broke my heart to see the English Captain all dejected at the post match interview. But one team had to lose. Glad it was not Pakistan!

  • POSTED BY LeftBrain on | February 24, 2014, 16:11 GMT

well done boys....... they proved that there is spark and talent in Pakistan's future generation of cricketers. Very well paced chase after such an enormous pressure. this is sort of stuff that seperate best from the rest. Good luck in finals. You already made all of us proud with your committment, your strengths and your skills.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 16:10 GMT

What a match! Am disappointed as a Welshman that England lost but they made a really good fight of it against a team which has dominated them at youth level in recent times. Good luck to Pakistan in the final.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 16:09 GMT

Well, even though we have crossed the line but what needs to learned both by our juniors and seniors is simply how to tackle pressure. England's attitude should be an inspiration for us. The score of 200 was always going to be easy and should have been chased down if all 50 over were to be played and that is what exactly happen.

  • POSTED BY jb633 on | February 24, 2014, 16:07 GMT

Top quality game and even as an England fan I would say the best side went through. I feel we should have won this game but we choked when it matters most. On paper this Pakistan side looks the strongest at this level and their spin attack is very difficult on these pitches. England have some good prospects. I think Fisher and the off spinner bowled really well and didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Good game overall though.

  • POSTED BY mensan on | February 24, 2014, 16:04 GMT

Brilliant fightback by Pakistan to win. But I think coach must work hard on short ball playing skills because Pakistan will face barrage of short-pitched bowling from SA/AUS bowlers in final. Today they failed against short ball.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 16:04 GMT

Loved that Pakistan won but also kind of felt sad when I saw the down heads of the England players. They should also be praised.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 15:59 GMT

A truly remarkable game of cricket. Both teams showed the maturity and handled the pressure well. The difference was luck which favored Pakistan. Both team put their best effort. Sorry for England who eventually lost the match and congratulation Pakistan for winning it.

Congrats team Pakistan, big win, Money canny buy you victory. these boys dont have any IPL or County experience but they do have talent. two out of three so called Big B are out remaining one will decided tomorrow. how can you decide things on money not on talent and fair play rules.

  • POSTED BY Musafir366 on | February 24, 2014, 15:52 GMT

I saw the match from the moment when Pak lost 7 wickets. It was indeed a good match. Of course being a Pakistani I am happy that Pakistan has won but really congratulate and like the way England boys did especially Fisher and Rhoads. I think Rhoads very much and think that he can be a good captian of big boys team his body language and attitude is very positive and having leadership quality. Weakest link was that boy who dropped a catch at boundary, i think named Winslet i think he also bowled poorly other wise England had great chance to be in Final.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 15:39 GMT

Future of Pakistan Cricket seems bright. Well done youngsters. You broght happiness & smiles. We congrat u & pray for future successes. Amen

Well done my boys! Very happy indeed, following the score from Manila. I was worried that having beaten England 11-0 the 12 game an important may go against imply on statistical grounds.

Now please win the final! Makes us all happy.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 15:37 GMT

What A way to end the match...... it was a tense situation when Pakistan 142/7, & then Gohar Ali fought with England players, but the way Gohar & his partner batted..... Excellent Boys,,, In Shaa ALLAH Pak U19 will win this world Cup In Shaa ALLAH. Wish you best of luck guys.........

  • POSTED BY reality_check on | February 24, 2014, 15:37 GMT

Well done Pakistan. Hard luck England. One more hurdle for Pakistan and then you will prove "all those who want to see Pakistan cricket vanish" wrong with the loudest and firmest reply. World cricket needs Pakistan.

You have already made everyone in Pakistan proud of you. Great stuff.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 15:37 GMT

I have enjoyed the great contest between these two teams. This is Gohar who knocked out England from this event and credit goes to him for his terrific stuff.

  • POSTED BY on | February 24, 2014, 15:32 GMT

Hearty Congratulations to Sami and his men in Green, to be honest i am a little bit disappointed by the batting of Hassan Raza and Kamran Ghulam.........!!! As far as Team England is concerned, Will Rhodes, A captain in the making, the way he led his side and the way he called for conference was indicating that he will lead Team England in International cricket one day..........!!! Very Happy that Team Pakistan made it to the finals Meanwhile very sad to see Team England lose...............!!!!

All the very best Team Pakistan for the final, May God be with you........!!!

Very good semi-final between these two sides. Feel sorry for England but I am very very happy for my team Pakistan. Well done boys. The entire nation is proud of you. Our team has showed the maturity that is difficult to find in this age group. My advice to the Pakistani team is that they work on their death bowling, don't take any pressure, take one match at a time and don't think of it as a final, stay humble, don't try to overdo anything. focus on the game and feel assured that the entire nation is there to support you whether you win or lose the final. Good going young ambassadors of Pakistan cricket. I think good times are coming for Pakistan. Pakistan Zindabad!!!

  • POSTED BY hamza893 on | February 24, 2014, 15:27 GMT

That's the best way to answer the Big3 boys.

Cricket is our unity as a nation.

Every time we are in crisis we hear a good news from Pak cricket.

People talking or criticizing PCB affairs should shut their beaks up.

I didn't see the match (being in the USA), but Pakistan just won. From the pace of play it seems like Pakistan played a very mature innings. Having lost 7 wickets at 142 chasing 205, they kept their cool and kept chipping away unitl a final burst. Way to go Green!

  • POSTED BY JavedKhanAfridi on | February 24, 2014, 15:16 GMT
