ICC Women's World Cup - 1st match, Group A

India Women v West Indies Women

India Women won by 105 runs

Indian openers - Poonam Raut and Thirush Kamini - are in the middle. Shakera Selman to open the bowling. One slip in place.

"We have put in a lot of effort in the last four years," says Jhulan Goswami. "We will try our best to do what our men's team did two years ago."

Toss: West Indies have won the toss and they have elected to bowl first.

Pitch: The pitch has a uniform layer of grass, which may aid the seamers through the game. The boundaries have been pulled in a bit, but at 67 metres straight-on, it is comparable to some of the grounds used in certain T20 leagues. The team that wins the toss could be inclined to bowl first, says Sanjay Manjrekar.

"After a day's play on England's tours to Australia or New Zealand, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint would take the score sheets, go to her hotel, compose a match report and dictate it over the phone to the Daily Telegraph's office in London. Nothing out of the ordinary for a touring reporter in the 1960s and 70s. Except that Heyhoe-Flint was also England Women's captain." (Read more)

Women's cricket has come a long way since then. Today, it's the start of another editions of the Women's World Cup - the tenth - and eight teams have assembled in India, who are hosting the tournament for the third time. Australia have been the most successful with five titles, while England, the defending champions, have three. New Zealand won their only title in 2000-01 when they were also the hosts. Could the home advantage help the Indian team?

1.30 pm: Welcome to the first Group A match between India and West Indies. India have a strong record against West Indies - 13 wins and 4 losses - but West Indies won the last two ties. We are about an hour away from the start and I will be with you the whole day to bring all the live details.

"Looking at the career statistics of some of the players in the Indian side I am just wondering what for they are there in the Squad," says Avani. "Neither they have good batting average nor good bowling figures. I think BCCI should organize more series for women both domestic and intenational so that real talents can be located and picked up. With the present team I do not have hope of WC inspite of having home advantage." Avani, I think these numbers need to be viewed under a different lens.

Vivek Bhandari: "I read that piece about Rachael Heyhoe-Flint earlier in the day. I must say she deserves a lot of respect with the efforts she had to put in to get the women's cricket somewhat in line. And kudos to Cricinfo to bring regular updates and articles to give the proper respect a World Cup deserves."

smudgeon: "Yeah! Go cricket! I'm interested to see how this tournament pans out! Any chance Cricinfo could include stats summary things within the live match thingy, like they do for every other match? Nothing like poring over stats to keep me occupied between overs :P" Smudgeon, here is the Women's World Cup stats treasure-chest for you while you wait for the game to start.

foxhat: "No real chances yet. Is the wicket benign or are the Indians batting well?" The wicket, I think, has something in for the seamers. But a lot of spinners are bowling..

A very strong start by India, but they haven't really set the stage on fire with their running between the wickets. They have been rather reluctant runners throughout this innings. Match State: Innings Break

India have given themselves a good start in the tournament after being put in. It is their best total in a WC match and it was set up by a strong opening partnership between Poonam Raut and Thirush Kamini, who also scored her maiden hundred. Later, Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur upped the tempo with some super hitting. Deandra Dottin was the most successful bowler, she got three wickets, but there was a feeling that she was introduced very late. She has a reputation with the bat as well and West Indies would hope for a strong performance from here with the bat. We will be back in about 40 mins for the chase.

suku: "Very nice and sensible batting from India. Kami,Raut gave good opening. Julan,Kaur chipped in with useful cameos. Finally 284 is a defendable total on this wicket. Its now Julan&co to deliver victory. Mithali did well by sending julan up the order and she did wat her captain and team wanted."

AK: "I think Mithali Raj will do a Dhoni and bat up the order in the finals and win the cup for India. Wishful thinking?"
