It was the eighth match between these two sides. India has won all eight.By an amazing piece of coincidence Bangladesh has always batted first in all its encounters against India. India has won by nine wickets on four occasions, by eight wickets on one, by five wickets on two and by four wickets on one occasion.

Umpire BC Cooray and Mohammad Nazir were officiating in their 43rd and ninth match respectively.

Hemang Badani and Mushfiqur Rahman were making their ODI debut. They became 130th and 50th player to represent India and Bangladesh respectively.

Bangladesh's score (249-6) is its highest ever against India putting into shade the previous highest of 190 at Dhaka on 10-01-1998. The total fell eight runs short of Bangladesh's highest total against all countries which remains 257 for five against Zimbabwe at Dhaka on 25-03-1999 and 257 (all out) also against Zimbabwe at Nairobi Gymkhana on 11-10-1997.

Both Bangladesh and India recorded their highest total against each other. Interestingly the previous highest total for either country was also recorded in same match. At Dhaka on 10-01-1998, Bangladesh made 190 in 48 overs and India responded with 191 for six in 46.2 overs.

Obviously the match aggregate of 501 for the loss of eight wickets is a new record in India- Bangladesh matches. This obliterates the previous highest of 381 for seven in 94.2 overs at Dhaka on 10-01-1998.

Thiru Kumaran conceded 54 runs in his nine overs. He now holds the dubious distinction of conceding most runs for India against Bangladesh.The previous record was of 43 runs which was jointly held by Manoj Prabhakar at Sharjah on 05-04-1995 and by Sairaj Bahutule at Dhaka on 10-01-1998.

Kumaran's figures are also the second most expensive by a bowler on his first appearance against Bangladesh. The worst, however, still remains Zimbabwean Andy Whittall's 62 in 10 overs at Nairobi Gymkhana on 11-10-1997.

Saurav Ganguly scored his first hundred against Bangladesh and 13th in the career.

Saurav Ganguly's innings is the highest for India against Bangladesh. This obliterates Navjot Sidhu's 104* at Chandigarh on 25-12-1990.

Ganguly's innings is also the second highest by any batsman against Bangladesh after Kenya's Kennedy Otieno's 144 at Nairobi Gymkhana on 10-10-1997.

Saurav Ganguly has now scored hundreds against seven different countries.The break-up: 4 vs Sri Lanka,2 each vs Zimbabwe, Pakistan and New Zealand and one each against Australia, South Africa and Bangladesh. Among Indians only Sachin Tendulkar has scored hundreds against more countries - eight. The world record is on the name of Australia's Mark Waugh with nine hundreds.

The seven sixes by Ganguly equalled existing Indian record of most sixes in an innings. Sachin Tendulkar at Kanpur on 07-04-1998 against Australia and Saurav Ganguly himself at Taunton on 26-05-1999 against Sri Lanka had hit as many sixes. Ganguly became only third batsman in ODI history to score seven sixes in an innings on two separate occasions after two West Indians Viv Richards and Ricardo Powell.

India achieved the target in just 40.1 overs at an amazing rate of 6.27 per over. India's performance is its fifth best while successfully chasing a target of 200 plus and keeping an average of 6 runs per over. The accompanying table has complete details :
