ICC Women's World Twenty20, 1st Semi-Final: England Women v New Zealand Women at Colombo (RPS), Oct 4, 2012
England Women won by 7 wickets (with 16 balls remaining)
Played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo (neutral venue)
4 October 2012 (20-over match)

Kartherine Brunt will open the bowling...

Here come the New Zealand openers, Bates and Satterthwaite, while the England players are already in the middle

2.15pm The highest score England have conceded during this tournament is 144 against Australia and they still chased that down. They have the top two batsmen in the new ICC rankings: Sarah Taylor and Charlotte Edwards. However, New Zealand have some very experienced players, particularly the captain Bates, Sophie Devine and Nicola Browne.

And, before you query the use of 'batsmen' it's our house style and an accepted term in the women's game.

2.05pm England: 1 Charlotte Edwards (capt), 2 Laura Marsh, 3 Sarah Taylor (wk), 4 Arran Brindle, 5 Lydia Greenway, 6 Danielle Wyatt, 7 Jenny Gunn, 8 Anya Shrubsole, 9 Danielle Hazell, 10 Katherine Brunt, 11 Holly Colvin

New Zealand: 1 Suzie Bates (capt), 2 Amy Satterthwaite, 3 Sophie Devine, 4 Frances Mackay, 5 Sara McGlashan, 6 Nicola Browne, 7 Katey Martin (wk), 8 Erin Bermingham, 9 Lucy Doolan, 10 Morna Nielsen, 11 Sian Ruck

So New Zealand have bolstered their spin attack by bringing in Lucy Doolan, but England, who are unchanged for the fourth game running, are well stocked for them as well.

2.00pm England have won the toss and put New Zealand into bat. "It's a formula that's worked really well for us," says Charlotte Edwards. "We've not played here before so we won't to know our target."

Suzie Bates: "We were happy to have a bat so we'll look to put a good score on the board."

1.45pm Hello everyone and welcome to coverage of the first semi-final in the Women's World Twenty20. It's England, the in-form team in the game, taking on New Zealand and the pair have had a number of good battles over the year although England came out convincing 4-0 winners earlier this. You can get a wealth of further information from Alan Gardner's preview and I'll bring you toss and team news when I get it.

Brunt to Bates, no run, on middle, worked to midwicket

Brunt to Bates, no run, uses her feet early on, drives firmly to cover but can't find the gap

Brunt to Bates, no run, dragged down short outside off, not a great deal of carry and Bates plays over the top with her cut shot...goes second bounce to Taylor

Brunt to Bates, no run, getting down the pitch again, Brunt drops shorter and Bates flat-bats a pull into the non-striker which ends the chance of any runs

Brunt to Bates, OUT, gone! First one down. Driven firmly into the off side, sharply fielded at cover, and there's a horrid mix-up as Greenway sends her throw back to the keeper and Bates is miles out of the picture

SW Bates run out 0 (2m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

That's a massive early wicket. Here's Mark Kidger: "The men couldn't do it but, today, England expects. Anything other than an England win would be a big surprise." They've made the ideal start

Brunt to Devine, no run, well bowled, extra bounce on this one outside off and Devine drops her hands as it goes through to the keeper...excellent first over

End of over 1 (wicket maiden) New Zealand Women 0/1

    • SFM Devine 0 (1b)
    • AE Satterthwaite 0 (0b)
    • KH Brunt 1-1-0-0

Danielle Hazell will share the new ball with her offspin

Hazell to Satterthwaite, 1 run, tossed up a little more, dragged along the ground through midwicket with a slog sweep

Hazell to Devine, 1 run, full outside off, driven square through the covers

Hazell to Satterthwaite, 2 runs, close! Almost picks out deep midwicket as she goes for a slow sweep and gets underneath the ball...the fielder, Greenway, runs in but can't quite get under the chance and actually does well to stop the boundary

End of over 2 (4 runs) New Zealand Women 4/1

    • AE Satterthwaite 3 (5b)
    • SFM Devine 1 (2b)
    • D Hazell 1-0-4-0

Brunt to Devine, 1 run, perhaps just a hint of outswing, played with an open face down to third man

Brunt to Satterthwaite, 1 run, on middle and leg, whipped off the pads down to long leg

"Not surprised Lydia Greenway's fielding affects the game - best fielder in the game - amongst men and women...?" says StoneRose. "Or is it wrong to compare?" It's a valid question

Brunt to Devine, 1 run, short of a length outside off, Satterthwaite waits a fraction longer and guides through the vacant slip area

Brunt to Satterthwaite, no run, pushed very full outside off stump, searching for any swing on offer - there's a little - and it's driven square to point

Brunt to Satterthwaite, no run, well bowled, hint of shape into the left hander who drives to midwicket but that wasn't far from getting between bat and pad

Brunt to Satterthwaite, no run, beaten, full again outside and she attempts to drive through the covers

End of over 3 (3 runs) New Zealand Women 7/1

    • AE Satterthwaite 4 (9b)
    • SFM Devine 3 (4b)
    • KH Brunt 2-1-3-0
    • D Hazell 1-0-4-0

Danni Wyatt comes into the attack. Another offspiner.

Wyatt to Devine, 3 runs, round the wicket, short outside off, and that's a rare misfield at cover as it's cut strongly off the back foot...the ball pulls up just short of the rope which allows it to be flicked back by Greenway

Wyatt to Devine, no run, tossed up, big full toss outside off, but driven straight to cover...missed out there

Wyatt to Devine, 1 run, better ball, on middle, flicked towards square leg and another fumble allows a single

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, no run, appeal for lbw as she missed another sweep

End of over 4 (5 runs) New Zealand Women 12/1

End of over 5 (4 runs) New Zealand Women 16/1

    • SFM Devine 11 (13b 1x4)
    • AE Satterthwaite 5 (12b)
    • KH Brunt 3-1-7-0
    • DN Wyatt 1-0-5-0

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, 1 run, uses her feet, makes it into a full toss and bunted down the ground to long-on

Wyatt to Devine, OUT, pressure tells...picked this up from outside off with a slog sweep but couldn't clear deep midwicket as she steadied herself under the catch

SFM Devine c Brunt b Wyatt 11 (18m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 78.57

Brunt brings out a Usain Bolt celebration...England in control early on

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, no run, stays round the wicket to the left hander, gets beaten as she drives to heave through midwicket

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, no run, tossed up on off stump, drives firmly but can't find a gap in the tightly-packed cover field

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, 1 wide, goes for the quicker ball but spears it down the leg side

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, no run, slower and back outside off, chopped into the covers

Wyatt to Satterthwaite, FOUR, another misfield, England haven't been perfect so far, as that's driven firmly back down the pitch and Wyatt can't stop it in her follow through then it comfortably beats mid-off

Still, despite that boundary, very much England's Powerplay

    • AE Satterthwaite 10 (17b 1x4)
    • FL Mackay 0 (0b)

Shrubsole to Mackay, no run, tucked into the leg side

Shrubsole to Mackay, no run, good line at off stump, comes across the stumps and plays towards mid-on

Shrubsole to Satterthwaite, no run, touch wider, another missed drive, and not far from being called by the umpire

Shrubsole to Satterthwaite, no run, down the pitch to try and engineer something, drives on the up but without much timing and it nearly carries to cover

End of over 7 (1 run) New Zealand Women 23/2

    • AE Satterthwaite 10 (20b 1x4)
    • FL Mackay 1 (3b)
    • A Shrubsole 1-0-1-0

Hazell to Satterthwaite, no run, tries to get down the pitch outside leg stump but can only tuck it to midwicket

    • FL Mackay 2 (6b)
    • AE Satterthwaite 11 (23b 1x4)
    • D Hazell 2-0-6-0
    • A Shrubsole 1-0-1-0

Shrubsole to Satterthwaite, no run, they are finding it very difficult to get their timing as this one is driven to cover

Shrubsole to Satterthwaite, FOUR, terrific shot, dropped a touch short and Satterthwaite waits on the back foot and pulls backward of square

Shrubsole to Satterthwaite, 1 run, now this is driven sweetly through the off side to give the cover sweeper some work

Shrubsole to Mackay, no run, big appeal for lbw! Looked quite close as she came across he stumps but it was just shaping down the leg side

Shrubsole to Mackay, no run, that's a technically correct drive, but goes to cover

Shrubsole to Mackay, OUT, gone this time! Was a touch fuller than the previous shout, swinging into the right hander, and she played across the line

Sara McGlashan in at No.5. New Zealand in a lot of trouble. Replays show the lbw was just clipping leg stump. Laura Marsh into the attack.

Marsh to Satterthwaite, 1 run, round the wicket, short outside off, driven off the back foot down to long on

Marsh to McGlashan, no run, nicely bowled, that really grips and spins into McGlashan who gets into a bit of a tangle

Marsh to McGlashan, 1 run, worked down the ground to long on

Marsh to Satterthwaite, FOUR, something goes New Zealand's way, this is a top edge that flies past Taylor and down to third man...Satterthwaite was aiming to send that over midwicket

End of over 10 (8 runs) New Zealand Women 38/3

    • AE Satterthwaite 22 (29b 3x4)
    • SJ McGlashan 2 (3b)
    • LA Marsh 1-0-8-0
    • A Shrubsole 2-0-6-1

Colvin to McGlashan, no run, that's a ripper...big turn and bounce from leg stump and it zips across the face

Colvin to McGlashan, OUT, lovely bowling, similar to the previous ball as it grips and turns past the edge, McGlashan is drawn out of the crease and Taylor is quick to whip the bails off...McGlashan well short

SJ McGlashan st †Taylor b Colvin 3 (8m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 42.85

There has been no let-up from the England attack from the opening over

End of over 12 (7 runs) New Zealand Women 49/4

    • NJ Browne 5 (4b 1x4)
    • AE Satterthwaite 26 (33b 3x4)

End of over 13 (4 runs) New Zealand Women 53/4

    • NJ Browne 7 (7b 1x4)

Hazell to Browne, 1 run, driven out to the cover sweeper

Hazell to Satterthwaite, 1 run, slogged away from off stump through the off side

Hazell to Browne, 1 run, short outside off, cut firmly to the deep point

A run-a-ball from here only gets New Zealand to around 100

Hazell to Satterthwaite, 1 run, low full toss outside leg stump, worked away through midwicket but still no boundaries

Hazell to Browne, no run, hint of desperation now as this is hoicked from outside off to midwicket

Hazell to Browne, no run, not allowing any width to use and this one is driven to cover

End of over 14 (4 runs) New Zealand Women 57/4

    • NJ Browne 9 (11b 1x4)

AE Satterthwaite c Gunn b Colvin 30 (54m 39b 3x4 0x6) SR: 76.92

This will be a free hit

Shrubsole to Browne, 1 run, another full toss but again it goes one bounce to a fielder, this time long off is into action

Shrubsole to Martin, FOUR, well played, again a full toss, and it's scooped over short fine-leg...extra pace on the ball helping New Zealand

Shrubsole to Martin, 1 run, still not managaing to pitch the ball, but this time only costs a single as it's swept to deep square

Shrubsole to Browne, no run, staying round the wicket, wide outside off and angled to backward point where Greenway makes a good save

Shrubsole to Browne, 1 run, another full toss is clubbed down the ground but does not go much further than the edge of the inner circle...better over for New Zealand, not great from Shrubsole

    • KJ Martin 15 (13b 1x4)

Laura Marsh will bowl the 19th over

Marsh to Browne, OUT, this time a full toss brings a wicket, clubbed out towards deep midwicket where Greenway takes a neat catch...the umpires check whether it's a no-ball on height but it's fine, Browne was also coming down the pitch

NJ Browne c Greenway b Marsh 18 (30m 23b 1x4 0x6) SR: 78.26

Marsh to Martin, 1 run, again aiming through midwicket, this one goes along the ground to Greenway

Marsh to Bermingham, 1 run, OUT, another goes...a low full toss is paddled to backward square and they try to make it into a second. The throw from the deep isn't great, but Taylor still has time to bring it down and break the stumps

Marsh to Doolan, no run, tossed up full outside off and driven to cover for another dot ball

Marsh to Doolan, 1 run, brings out the reverse sweep, Taylor anticipates the shot and almost manages to stop the ball

Wyatt to Doolan, 1 run, this turns and takes a thick inside edge which runs into the leg side

Wyatt to Martin, OUT, regulating stumping...Martin uses her feet and Wyatt fires the ball past her outside edge. An easy piece of work for Taylor.

KJ Martin st †Taylor b Wyatt 19 (25m 17b 1x4 0x6) SR: 111.76

Wyatt to Nielsen, 1 run, connects nicely, picked up over the leg side but Marsh gets around at deep square-leg

Wyatt to Doolan, 1 leg bye, goes right across outside off to try and get this to the leg side but it just takes the pad and dribbles to the off side

England have done the first half of this match very well and New Zealand only manage 93. The bowling wasn't perfect, with a lot of full tosses, but the fielding helped keep the pressure on and Charlotte Edwards used her bowling options cleverly. New Zealand hit just six fours during the innings. To have any chance they'll need quick wickets. Join me in a few minutes for the chase.
