John Brunskill was at Trinity College at the same time as some other talented cricketers - most notably Lucius Gwynn - and helped to form the mainstay of an exceptional side. A middle-order batsman, in 1895 he scored 25 and 58 as Dublin University beat the MCC, but he had less success on the tour of England which followed. He also played for Ireland. After qualifying in medicine he was commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corps and that curtailed his cricket. He served in World War One, receiving a DSO for gallantry. At the end of the war he was medical officer in the allied forces Dunsterforce expedition.
