'We believe we can win' - Sammy

West Indies captain Darren Sammy has said his team has the self-belief to go all the way and lift the ICC World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka, starting later this month. Sammy said he was touched by the support from the fans and urged them to continue showing faith in the team.

"This is a huge tournament for the team and the fans as well, so we will go to Sri Lanka and give it all we've got," Sammy said before the team's departure for Sri Lanka. "We believe we can win, but it will be hard, tough work. Once we play together and continue to get the backing of the fans, we know we can lift the title."

The squad had been training at the High Performance Centre in Barbados for nine days. The World T20 will be the team's first international assignment after the home series against New Zealand.

"The camp went very well and we are all in the right frame of mind," Sammy said. "We will head off to Sri Lanka believing in ourselves and believing in each other.

"A few days ago, we played two practice matches at the Three Ws Oval here in Barbados, and it was truly amazing to see how many fans came out to watch the matches, talk to us, and encourage us. People have been talking to us on the streets and have just been warm and friendly. I want to urge everyone to continue to rally around the West Indies."

Ottis Gibson, the coach of the West Indies team, was also satisfied with the preparatory camp and believed that the team has the potential to win the tournament. "The players have done very well at the camp and we have a good combination, a good mix of experience and young players," he said.

West Indies are one of the in-form teams coming into the tournament, having beaten a struggling New Zealand comprehensively in all three formats. They were boosted by the return of Chris Gayle to international cricket after a long stand-off with the West Indies Cricket Board.

Several in the squad have been the most sought-after players in various Twenty20 leagues, including Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Dwayne Bravo. "They have been stars of the Indian Premier League, and have in-depth knowledge of this format," Gibson said. "The captain, Darren Sammy, is in great form, so too Andre Russell and Fidel Edwards, and there are others that can step up."

The team failed to make the semi-finals in the 2010 edition, despite playing at home. They made the semis in 2009 before bowing out to Sri Lanka. In this edition, West Indies are in Group B along with Australia and Ireland. They warm up with two games against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

West Indies have the most balanced team - strong hitters, good pace bowler, good spinner and decent all rounders. All the other teams are lacking in at least one of these - India - pace bowlers and all rounders Pakistan - Batsmen England - No big hitter, no decent spinner Sri Lanka - no big hitter SA - no decent spinner Smart money on west indies to win - but its 20/20, anything can happen

Yes like Sammy, even I believe WI can win. I have no hopes for my team, so as is the norm in India, we support WI, given the fact that we Indians always liked and supported WI since ages.

Gayle has been smashing club bowlers in domestic leagues. We need to wait and watch how he fares at the international level. I think he will not be as effective and West Indies certainly will not lift the T20 cup. Semi-finals max.

  • cricketfannik on September 11, 2012, 0:44 GMT

WI is the only team to have all T 20 players who deserve a spot in the squad. they should win

  • mus_tard on September 10, 2012, 23:15 GMT

for all those that don't know, Roach isn't playing because of his no ball problems. and for all the Sammy-haters, he scored 58 not out from 23 balls at number 8 that included a maiden over in the first of the 2 T20 warm up matches he spoke about in the article against a WI A team attack. he deserves a place in the limited overs side. his captaincy decisions may not be the best but he is bonding a string WI team that always play with passion and carry the pride of the WI. WI ALL IN!!

  • on September 10, 2012, 22:24 GMT

    My starting 11:

    1. Chris Gayle 2. Dwayne Smith 3. Darren Bravo 4. Marlon Samuels 5. Dwayne Bravo 6. Kieron Pollard 7. Andre Russell 8. Denesh Ramdin 9. Darren Sammy 10. Sunil Narine 11. Fidel Edwards

  • on September 10, 2012, 21:29 GMT

Right you are ! WI is in the top 3 to win. India,Pak, & WI. Bowling is the key. WI have big hitters and match winners in Mr.Narine and Mr.Roach.

  • ProdigyA on September 10, 2012, 20:18 GMT

I think India are good enough to beat any team but if they meet WI head on with Gayle, Bravo, Pollard & Dwayne in their side, WI will have the upper hand.

  • maddy20 on September 10, 2012, 20:14 GMT

@ Daki_SL He has always had problems against offspin . Ashwin and Narine have enjoed good success against him. Ajmal will do great against him as well, though I agree that the rest of the WI line up can demolish any opposition on their day.

  • on September 10, 2012, 19:26 GMT

    yes WI have bright chances

  • on September 10, 2012, 19:24 GMT

West Indies trump card in SL is going to be Badree. The management has to play he and Narine together to improve chances of a win. Russel and Gayle can open. Russel as pinch hitter, with Darren at 3 or Dwayne B can also open, did it successfully in the past. Ramdin must play as he has to keep to Narine and Badree.

  • on September 10, 2012, 16:57 GMT

Please don't start an anti-Sammy campaign here again. Whether we agree or not, the man has been appointed captain once more. If you're a true Caribfan, just rally around the team and give it your support and prayers, if you're so inclined. Cut out all the nay saying, negativity, malicious criticism, chronic complaining and the like. Save that until after the tournament when you're free to do the post mortem routine.

The team looks strong on paper, but as we all know, games are played on the field, not in the media, rum shops, sports bars and the like. We must simply execute the game plan with all hands on deck, but be prepared to make adjustments to it if warranted. Cricket's a team game so everyone must do their part.

If our men fail to lift that trophy, they're going to be many disappointed Caribfans in the region and around the world. Time will tell. I wish them well & GOD's blessings too.

One needs to think twice before questioning Sammy's place in the limited-overs team. Yes, he isn't a Test match player and should be sacked in Tests so that they find a decent third seamer in the XI. But he can surely be a big asset in limited-overs especially T20s with his canny bowling, late big-hitting and inspiring captaincy.

  • noplay on September 10, 2012, 14:01 GMT

Wasn't Chris Gayle playing in the IPL? When did his team win the tournament again? I forgot. This sport is a team sport, with a captain and team strategy. No one man wins matches. If that is how WI fans feel then that is too bad for them. Did any of them notice how the KKR coaching bench looked. I am sure Sunil Narine learnt more from that six weeks than anything WI has to offer. And I am sure Gayle learnt more from his trips around the world that any advice WI staff has to offer. While he was in the doghouse he was preparing to help WI win this tournament. Now that was a cool strategy

  • 777aditya on September 10, 2012, 13:44 GMT

@ Pupun Jena - W for West Indies and W for Wait and Watch - time will tell - in all probability in less than a month's time from now WI will be the champs - Dhoni's brigade is impressive in these conditions as well. Pakistan is a dangerous side as is SL in home conditions. So, watch out for these teams - but WI for sure has the chance like never before - many criticize Sammy, but he is really not as bad a cricketer he is made out to be.

  • 777aditya on September 10, 2012, 13:02 GMT

@ sea biscuit - Regardless of what you feel about IPL, please dont forget only the best from all over the world get to ply their trade in IPL. So, if Gayle succeeds against A class players, he will definitely do better against B or C class players. He does not slaughter Indian bowlers only, but anything that meets Gayle is washed away, in style. Gayle and, in fact, WI will definitely succeed in SL where the climate is almost the same as WI. Pitches will differ, but a few practice games will put that into perspective as well. Trust me pal, WI are hot property now.

  • kums1985 on September 10, 2012, 12:27 GMT

MR CYBER WRITEING IN CAPS IS TO ATTRACT BUT THE MATTER IS TRUE U WILL BELIVE IT IN 15 DAYS THE FIRST HURDLE IS 2 START WINNING IF THEY DO SO THEN THEY R UNSTOPABLE I DONT KNOW WHICH TEAM U R SUPPORTING FOR, BUT I AM SURE U R GOING TO CRY ON THAT DAY WHEN WE DEMOLISH UR TEAMS CHANCES OF PROGRESING IN THE TOURNAMENT HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!!

  • arun_nva on September 10, 2012, 12:20 GMT

@TheCricketAsISeeIt, oh ya the same Below avg bowler was terrorising Gayle in past 2 IPLs. Bhajji also had quiet good success against him.and Praveen Kumar also had success against him basically Gayle is weak against the traditional off spinner/ away moving deliveries from him. if bowlers are able to use it then the will conquer. if bowlers give him some time then he will thrash everyone.

  • on September 10, 2012, 12:15 GMT

they are just trying to lure Gayle in a sort false expectancy they have already have plan for him

  • on September 10, 2012, 12:14 GMT

On paper the Windies have the depth to be destructive and very dangerous. On their day they can chase down anything that the opposition will set them. Unfortunately they haven't got the discipline or organisation to maintain any consistancy or momentum throughout a whole tournament. Unless that side of their cricket changes, i can see them pulling off some entertaining results, but at the same time will also disappoint through their unpredictability to turn up when it really matters. I like the biased-arrogance by some people on here to completely dismiss their chances, but the fact that they're rated number six in the rankings of this format, does give them a outside chance, if only a slim one.

  • on September 10, 2012, 12:13 GMT

westindies i doubt i really do.

  • tanstell87 on September 10, 2012, 11:51 GMT

West Indies will make the final this time...India,South Africa & New Zealand will be other 3 semi finalists...Pakistan mite get knocked out from league phase itself.

  • i_witnessed_2011 on September 10, 2012, 11:24 GMT

I think this is the best chance that WI have... Though they are the better team on paper, They need to get their team combination and strategy right... There are too many all rounders and hence they need to pick them smartly and should make full use of their excellent potential... I would like to see Russel opening along with Gayle. He is too good player and has a very good attitude. They will be wasting hi potential if they play him at no.8... Opening will give him the chance to attack from the first ball and also gives Gayle to settle down.

  • ShankarKR on September 10, 2012, 11:02 GMT

West Indies can only win if Sammy is out of the Team. He doesn't deserve his place in the team.

  • TheGreatestGameEverPlayed on September 10, 2012, 10:48 GMT

Wow...these Indian are living in a bubble or something..They keep writing how destructive Chris Gayle is. I think they watch too many league matches..lol. He can not pull IPL/BIG BASH stunts here. And that's a fact. Wait 'n see how its gonna unfold. peace out !!!!!!!!!!

  • Technosys on September 10, 2012, 10:32 GMT

I'm predicting WI will never reach to next round because Aussie and Irish will beat them

  • on September 10, 2012, 10:29 GMT

West Indies Vs India would be a superb final !!! The West Indians definitely have a chance this time as Gayle is back...He'z one of the most destructive players in World Cricket and is capable of hitting any ball anywhere... The top order has Darren bravo and Samuels to give solidity...Following them, are the power hitters Dwayne Bravo, Pollard, Sammy and Russel... The bowling dept. also lokks good with Roach and Mystery spinner, Sunil Narine...Hence, there's no reason why they shouldn't do well...

Why is everyone trying to create a Chris Gayle-phobia around here ? May be he is a big deal for West Indians, but not for others.. He is fine batsman. no argument, but he is not the freaking Cricket God. He will be playing here with big boys ,not with IPL or BIG BASH country boys.

  • HawksEyeFocused on September 10, 2012, 10:02 GMT

@ sivagt: Ashwin will control Gayle??? lol...........You made my day....lol........He's below average bowler...........India will lose all its matches in T20 like the last T20 WC!!!

  • CRIC_or_CRIC on September 10, 2012, 9:56 GMT

  • Thyagu5432 on September 10, 2012, 9:54 GMT

When WI players come in firing all their cylinders, they can beat any team in this world. However, they also have the ability to last exactly 10 balls per innings. There is no anchor player which makes their being consistent virtually impossible. And you need to be consistent to win any tournament. But no matter what, WI team is one team which makes any match interesting.

  • HawksEyeFocused on September 10, 2012, 9:50 GMT

Yeah W.Indies is also there with the other T20 giants like Pakistan,South Africa and Sri Lanka. The rest will be knocked out before the semi-finals!!! Cheers!!!

  • satish619chandar on September 10, 2012, 9:29 GMT

WI are the real powerhouse team in the WT20 this time. If two of their big hitters(Any one of the 6-7 around) get to face 60+ deliveries, they will kill the opponents. This time, they got the bowling lineup filled too. With te allrounders they got, they can use both the swing available in the evening and also the slowness of the track. My favorites by a long margin!

  • TheGreatestGameEverPlayed on September 10, 2012, 9:23 GMT

As a Sri Lankan, I don't see West Indies as a threat at all. We have never been defeated by WI in T20's. So I highly doubt that It's gonna change specially on SL soil. Btw good luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!
