Ajantha Mendis marked his return to Sri Lanka's national side by achieving the best figures in T20 internationals. He puzzled and prised out the Zimbabwe batsmen to contribute to a comprehensive victory in the tournament opener.

After Sri Lanka posted an imposing total, Ajantha tore through Zimbabwe. He took three wickets in his first spell to kill off any thoughts of a chase and returned to take three more to end Zimbabwe's limp challenge. Mendis served up deliveries that held their line, those that turned in, the carrom ball and the googly from the back of the hand, leaving Zimbabwe with a sour taste in their mouths and befuddlement in their minds.

Another Mendis, Jeevan, too was major weapon in the home side's armoury. He starred in a 94-run fourth-wicket stand with Kumar Sangakkara and took three wickets. Together, the two Mendises dominated an overawed and outplayed Zimbabwe.

Despite not bowling badly, a shoddy showing in the field and being completely at sea with the bat left Zimbabwe looking like the underdogs they were labelled as. They conceded heavily in the second half of the Sri Lankan innings when Sangakkara and Jeevan asserted their authority over an attack whose spinners held their own while the seamers fell apart.

Kyle Jarvis found swing and bowled an impressive two-over spell upfront, after he loosened up with a full-toss. He should have had an early wicket, too. Debutant Dilshan Munaweera hoicked a delivery to midwicket and Malcolm Waller could only grasp humid air. Jarvis' opening partner, Brian Vitori, suffered the same fate. Tillakaratne Dilshan got a leading edge over Brendan Taylor's head and even though the wicketkeeper moved quickly, he could not get to it in time to take the catch.

Sri Lanka's opening pair flirted with danger twice more in their 54-run stand. Dilshan escaped a run-out when he stole a single to point and Munaweera was dropped a second time by Waller. Along with risk, came reward. Munaweera went on to glance Mpofu's low full-toss to the boundary after Dilshan brought out his scoop to make things worse for the bowler.

Luck finally went Zimbabwe's way in the seventh over when Munaweera was run out, after he dropped his bat in search of a run that was not there. As luck came, it went. Graeme Cremer had Mahela Jayawardene given out lbw of a back-foot no-ball. But, two balls later, Dilshan tried to cut Cremer and was caught behind.

Smart stats

  • Ajantha Mendis' 6 for 8 is the best bowling performance in Twenty20 internationals surpassing his own 6 for 16 against Australia in 2011. Mendis' figures are also the best ever in the World T20.
  • The number of runs conceded by Mendis (8) is the lowest ever for a Sri Lankan bowler in a completed four-over spell. He is the only Sri Lankan bowler to concede less than ten runs in a completed spell on two occasions.
  • Mendis bowled two maiden overs in his four-over spell. It is first instance of a Sri Lankan bowler bowling two maiden overs in a Twenty20 international. Shaun Tait is the only other bowler to achieve the feat in the World Twenty20 (2010).
  • The margin of victory for Sri Lanka (82 runs) is joint-fourth on the list of largest wins (in terms of runs) in the World Twenty20. The highest is 172 runs for Sri Lanka against Kenya in 2007.
  • Zimbabwe have now gone on to lose their last 13 matches. Their last win in Twenty20 games came against West Indies in 2010.
  • The number of runs conceded by Chris Mpofu (49) is the third-highest for Zimbabwe in a Twenty20 international and the highest for them in a World Twenty20 game. Mpofu has also conceded 59 runs on two separate occasions.

Zimbabwe hauled Sri Lanka in temporarily. The hosts went 27 deliveries without scoring a boundary but Zimbabwe could not build on the pressure they created. Jeevan, who was moved up the order, broke the boundary drought when he drove down the ground off Mpofu, who was too slow to get down in his follow-through. The ball sliced between the long-on and long-off who both tried but failed to cut it off and Zimbabwe's morale had been dented. Jeevan picked Cremer better than his predecessors and hit him for back-to-back fours to bring up the Sri Lankan 100. He also sunk his teeth into Elton Chigumbura who bowled a poor over, giving away the first six of the match.

Zimbabwe unravelled in the last quarter while Sangakkara kept a cool head and collected runs in twos and threes, along with a gorgeous drive over point, which went for four. Their lapses would cost them, as they faced a tall target and Ajantha ensured they were never in a position to reach it.

Hamilton Masakadza and Vusi Sibanda put on 37 for the first wicket, with Masakadza even having the gumption to take on Lasith Malinga. When Ajantha came on in the seventh over, he ended Zimbabwe's hopes of running their own race of achieving a decent score or ending the match without being bowled out.

A magic box of tricks came from Ajantha's hands: the ball that held its line to bowl Sibanda, the carrom ball that had Brendan Taylor stumped and the googly to bowl Masakadza. With their top three dismissed, Zimbabwe needed fighters but Craig Ervine and Waller succumbed to Jeevan's googly.

After 10 overs, Zimbabwe were 59 for 5 and Ajantha could return to play some more. Zimbabwe reached three-figures but no more, as Mpofu spooned an easy catch to mid-off off Malinga to end the game.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s Powerplay (0-6) 16-20 overs NB/Wides
Sri Lanka 45 15 3 53-0 53-1 3/7

I feel very proud whenever a fan of the "worlds best team"(WBT) calls our Sri Lankan team minnows for few reasons.

once these minnows dismissed the WBT for a pedestrian 54. once the worlds best odi bowling figures 7/30 was against the WBT by a bowler from the Minnows.

minnows have won a world cup. A batsmen from minnows hit 189 in an ODI and 340 in a test. worlds highest score in a test innings 952 is by minnows against the WBT minnows has the bowler with most number of wickets in tests and ODIs. minnows has the highest totals in every format of the game. we minnows are the only team so far to have two t20 centurians. we have the best bowling figures in ODIs and T20s.

we have a bowler who has 3 hattricks including the only double hattrick. he is also the only bowler to have two worldcup hattricks and there are more and more to say.

so don't get annoyed when someone call us minnows. because we have achieved a lot in a very small time and if they still wanna call us minnows let them

Posted by Htc-Android on (September 20, 2012, 16:10 GMT)

@Narbavi. fastest indian not fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in test. do you know something mendis was the fastest bowler to 50 wickets in ODIs.

Posted by Sinhaya on (September 20, 2012, 15:58 GMT)

@golgoal, we won the Bangladesh tri series in early 2010! Where were you then? Also we won the Zimbabwe tri series in June 2010 and the Dambulla tri series in August 2010. We have achieved plenty of incredible results and that was why we won the Asia Cup in 2008. What did Bangladesh do in the 2007 50 over world cup???

Posted by Narbavi on (September 20, 2012, 12:03 GMT)

@gabrialgihan: i never rated bhajji higher than murali, and its so funny that u guys think that if mendis can pick 6 against aussies in a t20 then he is a better bowler than a guy who has been the fastest indian to pick up 50 test wickets!! That shows it!!

Posted by Narbavi on (September 20, 2012, 11:50 GMT)

@Charith De Alwis: Just think if Afghanistan came so close to beating us then surely if your team had played them surely lanka would have lost, how?? Because we all know lanka has been losing to india all the time!!

Posted by   on (September 20, 2012, 9:06 GMT)

Indian fans and cricketers arrogance... What ever said and done abt the SL team we beat Zimbabwe with a 80 odd run lead, while India couldnt even beat Afganisthan with a decent margin. This a minnow team, and the high and mighty world cup winning indians got a shock of their life from the Afgans... Do not diss SL's performance cos we did well... Post all the crap you guys have to say on articles about your team... And all the Indian Commentrators and fans can belittle Ajantha's awesome bowling and the record, but for all SL fans and the rest of the world that was a truly great performance, regardless which ever team they played against... Well done Lions, go full steam ahead, we are with you...

Bring on DRS and atleast try and beat Nepal. I doubt it very much.

Ummm..few days ago this same AFG team thrashed SL-A which had many of your big players lol (just saying :P )

@Pappu_bhai, not just one off day... another off day for Zimbabwe as they keep losing...

Posted by Sallu_bhai on (September 20, 2012, 5:06 GMT)

Plz feed us the mystery bowler. We will make him out of SL team for another year. But i believe this is partiality. Why Mendis is not getting the same treatment as Malinga.

We have destroyed him also still He is in team.So i believe this time even though We destroy the mystery spinner you will not be out of team as SL dont have good replaements. And also SL understand the fact that in Cricket India is far ahead of them.

Posted by Pappu_bhai on (September 20, 2012, 2:53 GMT)

So is the celebration over of a miracle victory SL???

SL fans are celebrating like they won a world cup.Plz understand that winning against ZIM will not make you better team.I still believe ZIM is as strong as SL and Just one off day made them fail.

Posted by golgoal on (September 20, 2012, 2:14 GMT)

@Nothingness You lankan guys say such big things man, but when it comes to showing results you are ZERO. Mahle and Sanga are only shown holding tea cups, and no other cups. These days you guys aren't even able to win in Bangladesh.

Posted by EmperorDravid on (September 19, 2012, 22:53 GMT)

I am still waiting for an answer from the Sl fans. But I know they can't answer because they are nothing in front of India.

Posted by gabrialgihan on (September 19, 2012, 20:00 GMT)

@Narbavi dude do you even know what you are talking?you asked what mendis has done???he has taken 6 wickets against your so called india...And now you talk about y he has been out of cricket???he didnt play the finals because we had the great murali playing in that game, and of course Mndis is way better than ravichandran ashwin who is highly overrated..i still remember how you indians were talking about Harbhajan sing breaking muralis record when he reached 400 test wickets.what happened to him?he prob need another three life's to become a murali and same apply to your ashwin too...

Posted by gabrialgihan on (September 19, 2012, 19:48 GMT)

@ Super_Cricketer yep it was 6 for 13 against india.......

Posted by Nothingness on (September 19, 2012, 17:52 GMT)

@ Yogesh Rajput;

The first upset rather came in the 3rd game of the series when India won a very hard fought game against Afghanistan.....Afghanistan were always the favorites; if only they had held on to their chances, everything would have been as expected then.

Posted by Super_Cricketer on (September 19, 2012, 16:25 GMT)

@gabrialgihan, his previous best(6/16) was against Australia not against India.

Posted by Narbavi on (September 19, 2012, 12:45 GMT)

@gabrialgihan: in that case where was he these many days?? why did lanka not play him against us in the world cup final?? i wil tell you why, he was damn good when he came in, but we worked him out later bringing his odi and test career to a halt, for now he has to be content with t20's

Posted by FLIPPER_99 on (September 19, 2012, 11:28 GMT)

india has a brilliant batting lineup barring rohit who acts as the 12th man of the opposition team giving them a free wicket but indian bowlers are worse than the club bowlers of zimbabwe. zaheer khan looks like least motivated and looks as fragile as glass, yadav is a packet of runs, balaji is slower than a spinner and ashwin learned his tricks from A.mendis when he toured India but still cant bowl like that great man and its pathetic to even speak about the rest.. India would be blown away in the face of greater teams

Posted by FLIPPER_99 on (September 19, 2012, 11:18 GMT)

lol lot of indians think that mendis's world record match figures is useless cause it was against Zimbabwe well all teams have played against associate teams one time or another but still indians can barely contain teams forget about wickets & records.. & you want mendis to purposely bowl bad against Zimbabwe just because its lower ranked?

Posted by harshini1980 on (September 19, 2012, 10:40 GMT)

India-The-ultimate-winner, But, Pakistani's dont think like that.

Posted by gabrialgihan on (September 19, 2012, 10:38 GMT)

@Narbavi you are spot on mendis allways peforms against minnows and helpless teams... and ya his previous best was 6 for 16 against india...

Posted by sidh78 on (September 19, 2012, 10:30 GMT)

why sl fans call there batsman STREET LAVELS.when they called?see sl fans called indian bowler club lavels then what you called the batsmans which are not performing against club lavel bowler out for 120 in warmup game and 5-1 lost in their home flat pitches.

@srinideva- so wont you be celebrating if you beat Afghanistan today?Or are you one of those part time indian fans who is not interested about cricket when your team is not winning?all a team can do is win against whoever they are facing and if you dont think it was a convincing win then maybe you need to learn a bit more about cricket..

Zim needs to b depromoted for their poor display against a equal poor team. on any day, ireland is the best compare to this zim...atleast they have the players to play a competitive cricket..

Posted by Hareendra on (September 19, 2012, 6:44 GMT)

Thirimanne was listed to come in at No 8 in the batting lineup. What's the point of playing a full time batsman at No 8? What happened to the SLPL Player of the Series, Shaminda Eranga? I think there should be a rethink on what the best combination should be in this ultra short format.

Posted by India-The-ultimate-winner on (September 19, 2012, 6:39 GMT)

I wish to see the semi final line up as India VS Bangladesh & Pakistan Vs Afghanistan......bcoz all of us are brothers....

Posted by bravetigersmustwin on (September 19, 2012, 6:38 GMT)

yeah srilankan are too good when the opposition is weak and they make full use of it. Create amazing records.... But when the opposition is strong they meakly surrender and lay down ... especially to india... they accept that they are toothless lions against mighty India ... and indians are really bored of beating these toothless lions...

Posted by KEVINSL on (September 19, 2012, 6:37 GMT)

Today is a big match . Afgan vs India.. its interesting to see Indian bowlers bowl full tosses at the death stage of the innings. because no instance found from the other teams could do that. its reasonable to teach how to bowl full tosses at the end of the innings. probably after loose to England, these club bowlers can do this job for cricket world.

Posted by   on (September 19, 2012, 6:35 GMT)

@Narbavi dude if srilanka are minnows, just imagine what india is? they are icc level 5 associates, been ranked 7th or something, way below srilanka lmao

Posted by   on (September 19, 2012, 6:34 GMT)

A magnificent start of SlL team. Once again Ajantha Mendis proved his talents. Ajantha made him very confident which should reflect throughout the tournament. Sanga's usual steadyness showed lots of expectaions. Jeevantha from another corner showed his marvaleous talents. It's indeed a teamwork. Go guys go...

@yorkslanka , oh yeah, you have to proud of yourself.. next time try to play with SL A team so that you can score 300 runs and also bowlers like a mendis can able to take all wickts for 2 runs..ROFL

Posted by yorkslanka on (September 19, 2012, 6:05 GMT)

@cpt.meanster- we are celebrating because a) it was a win, irrespective of the opposition, a win is a win, b) we scored our highest innings score in T20 at this ground=improvement and c) Ajantha Mendis has the best T20 international bolwing figures now...simple...

Posted by siri12345 on (September 19, 2012, 5:53 GMT)

good start guys but i think we should play another bowler instead of thirimanne bacause i think we dont need 8 batsman for a 20 over game.so i think we should replace thirimanne with dhananjaya against south africa.

Posted by India-The-ultimate-winner on (September 19, 2012, 5:49 GMT)

Congrats Srilanka.... u done wat u deserve.... now ur T20 WC is over as u r going to loose all the upcoming matches....

Posted by Nehans on (September 19, 2012, 5:39 GMT)

too early to comment but by seeing the bowling performance of the opening matches and warm up matches it seems that the pitches are too spinner friendly if this is the case than again we see all three of the sub continent team making it to semi finals....and little chance for Australia, England or Newzealand

completely agree tatail, should have been a big match to start it of, perhaps two test nation

Posted by colombo_SL on (September 19, 2012, 5:25 GMT)

I think, Kumar Sangakkara should play the anchor role in this tournament. If he can retain one end steady, others can rotate their bats & guide the ball all over the park. That would be a key for Sri Lankan success. Sangaa played only a dot ball yesterday & rotated the strike so cleverly.

Posted by srinideva on (September 19, 2012, 5:23 GMT)

It was bore game of this decade. better to gave a oppurtunity to a ireland vs australia. atleast they have the fighting spirit compare to this minnow teams. Now SL will live with this remarkable victory for a decade. bravo guys.. Really boring guys..

Jeevan Mandis Deserve man of the match.

Posted by colombo_SL on (September 19, 2012, 5:03 GMT)

My opinion is Thisara perera should be given opportunity to play between 15-20 overs. It is his duty to convert the solid foundation given by top order to a commanding total. It is better if he can bat 20 balls at least per match. But the foundation should be laid down by the top order batsman, because little mistake can lead to a severe defeat. Yesterday's innings by Kumar Sangakkara & Jeewn were fantastic. But i feel, Thisara should be given opportunity to play mor balls than that.

Posted by colombo_SL on (September 19, 2012, 4:58 GMT)

@Harshani Pereira; I feel munaweera's selection is ok. We know chandi is good player. But the quick & steady start given by Dilshan & Munaweera help us lot to post a big total. My opinion is Munaweera should take lessons from others, how to convert good starts into big fifties. Then he may be more valuable asset.

Posted by Htc-Android on (September 19, 2012, 3:16 GMT)

@Narbavi.please dont post any rubbish comments.on what basis are you telling me mendis took wickets hapless teams. last year he took 6 wickets against Aus in a t20 game. took 6 wickets agains your indian team and took 26 wickets against your team in a test series. in his odi career he 28 wickets at average of 25 against india. so are you telling me india is a hapless team? cricinfo please publish.

Its good to see Ajantha Mendis back in action. He was superb out there and Zimbabwe had no clue about his bowling. Wish he will do the same against the big teams too. And that Sri Lankan team is the perfect team to select. Jeevan Mendis prooved why he deserves to be in the team. The only thing Sri Lanka need is to prevent their simple mistakes.

Posted by tatail on (September 19, 2012, 3:08 GMT)

First I would like readers not to take this comment in the wrong way..

Absolutely all the credit to Sri Lanka for the way the played, but the opponent they chose for the opening ceremony was very disappointing..

I mean everyone knew from the beginning that SL will take the game without a doubt, but what I wanted in first match of the T20 WC was a nail biting match between two, equaled, formidable teams.. Not a one sided match..

Posted by AMAZINGFAN on (September 19, 2012, 3:07 GMT)

it's really is a great upset......i don't know how ordinary sl beat zim.......mendis and maling fit to bowl only against minnows.....but they r hopeless against ind.

Posted by DaCricketFan on (September 19, 2012, 3:02 GMT)

@ cool2cool, man I can understand your tension. Awaiting for the biggest upset of the history of the game at India vs Afghanistan match. Don't worry mate. Cricket is not all about winning.

Posted by Ramansilva on (September 19, 2012, 2:59 GMT)

Some startled Indian fans have jumped to discredit Ajantha Mendis's remarkable feat. Yes, we know Indian batsmen smashed him at one time. Yes, we know Indian batsmen are good at handling any spin bowler. But Ajantha's record is difficult to emulate by any Indian spin bowler in the current team. His 6 for 16 against mighty Australians was even better than 6 for 8 againts Zimbabwe.

Posted by DaCricketFan on (September 19, 2012, 2:59 GMT)

@praveen4honestremark & sachinkhairnar5983, Many thanks for your warm wishes my friends. At least people like you are still there to give the credit where it's due. Although our fans are tend to bash the comments posted by some of your fans, we(SL) still love to see Indian wins(not against us ;) ) as our neighbor. All the best for your team & as well as for Pakistan too.

@Frank Anushka Sachith AbagNale: lol, Ashwin has already done a great deal in test cricket with loads of wickets and a test century, what has your great mendis done other than picking wickets against hapless teams and ofcourse that wonder at the beginning of his career

Posted by Narbavi on (September 19, 2012, 2:46 GMT)

Now, that's what i call a huge upset!! i mean, lanka beating zimbabwe was considered an upset, but none expected huge margin like this, this is what i call a real real upset, that's what this format and competition is all about, remember the same happened to england in 2009 in the first game!!

this was clinical performance from SL.in t20s and odis SL has good depth in bowling,if they post even 150-160 in these pitches,it can be winning one,i can see a lot of teams strugging against SL in this tournament.they have good mix of allrounders in the team.they are definitely among the top 3 teams to qualify for Semis.well played SL.....

Posted by GIRIchamp on (September 19, 2012, 1:58 GMT)

well done ajantha. hope u keep the same performance going. and well done sri lanka. i was hoping for a brendan taylor magic but not to be. by the way m an INDIAN . JAI HIND ........ :D

Posted by AMAZINGFAN on (September 19, 2012, 1:35 GMT)

when mendis arrived everyone said he is going to be the next sensation.but after one or two series ind bastmen found a way out and they smashed mendis all over the park......when mendis could play q/f and s/f in wc then why can't he play wc final against india.mendis is afraid to play against ind batsmen...

Posted by   on (September 19, 2012, 1:30 GMT)

@cool2cool:- Sanjay Majrekar put poor effort to compare Ajantha Mendis with R. Ashwin. I couldnt able to stopped my laugh. Ajantha Mendis is a totally match winner . ashwin only performs warm up games and domestic level matches. even he has not variations as mendis has. this world cup desperately need Mark Nicholus, Richie benaud and co to commentating. other wise minnows become heroes. heroes become minnows.

Posted by AMAZINGFAN on (September 19, 2012, 1:27 GMT)

ajanta mendis bowls well only against minnows.he is ineffective against ind batsmen.the so called best bowlers like malinga and mendis gets tonked for runs by ind batsmen.

Ajantha Mendis has sealed the ICC award for the best T20 performance for the next year which he marginally missed out this year.

SL into the super 8s (despite the result of their game against SA).

Opponents: 1. England 2. West Indies 3. New Zealand / Bangladesh

Posted by BG4cricket on (September 19, 2012, 1:10 GMT)

Hope someone had Ajantha Mendis is their fantasy side as he would have got an incredible score for that performance

Good show Ajantha. You are back and we pray for you.

Guess what ???? All expected Mahela to act as an interpreter for Ajantha in the award ceremony but Aja was so confident and spoke in spotless english. It shows that this humble man is a good learner and it is very good sign of a man who goes distance.

I remember SL started WC2003 in same manner with Vassy's 3 in a row in first three balls. Don't loose the way this time guys. btw, someone is saying "This is biggest upset in my life!".

@SLCric-DHFan on (September 18 2012, 21:43 PM GMT)...Brother, Just read another book on how many great professionals India produces and it is way more than any other country. Professionals like Doctors. Scientists in NASA. Why don't you read them too. The only fact India is lagging behind in sports is that money is actually not going to welfare of other sports person. So, let's better avoid ourselves from talking too much about talent which we have plenty and no thanks for your suggestions. Period.

@sachinkhairnar5983 and @praveen4honestremark, I appreciate and fully respect Indian fans like the 2 of you when cool2cool is posting nasty comments as usual. Good luck to India indeed. They have the best batting lineup among all teams. But I doubt if Harbhajan's selection was right. Kohli will definitely play a major part in any of India's wins. Main obstacle for us winning the T20 world cup will be India and Pakistan for sure.

heights of redundancy...Ajantha Mendis' 6 for 8 is the best bowling performance in Twenty20 internationals surpassing his own 6 for 16 against Australia in 2011. Mendis' figures are also the best ever in the World T20....ROFL

Posted by Meety on (September 18, 2012, 23:31 GMT)

Well I will love to see the bowling performance that tops 6 for 8 off 4 overs! Yet they say it's a Batsmen's game? LOL! The small rider is, it was against basically a minnow, but still it is a good/great performance.

Posted by Htc-Android on (September 18, 2012, 23:08 GMT)

sangas strike rate was very impressive.hit only 2 fours and a six out of his 44 and yet he managed a strike rate of 169. who needs big hitters if he can play like this. i hope he plays the same innings in every game.

Posted by Juan_Fernando on (September 18, 2012, 21:58 GMT)

A convincing victory is always good but do not overly laud over individual performance like that of A. Mendis. Zimbabwe hardly plays any international cricket. Must prove himself against tougher and more experienced opposition.

This btw, is my second post to this article. Cricinfo not posting the first one maybe cause there was a small curse word regarding the new SL uniform. I mean, am I the only one that has a problem with it? Such horrible colour... Not true lankan blue. Shame cause I wanted to buy a new team jersey, not going to be this one.

Hope the moderators post this. Kept it as polite as possible.

@sampi72:The score 182 scored on a ground where the avg score was 120-135 Talking about kula his spell was economical and he was the highest wicket taker for srilanka in warm up games...chandimal doesn't perform well in srilanka...oh man Munaweera was in his debut..just need to give him more chances..Improve your knowledge of cricket and the past performences of players before commenting...Today after sometime SL played their best combinations...

Ajantha must play the whole tournament. If he had played in the WC final things may well have gone differently. I have been a big supporter of his throughout his career, and found his recent exclusion inexplicable. Welcome Back A.M.!

Posted by sampi72 on (September 18, 2012, 20:52 GMT)

Wwe can not happy with our batting performance...182 for 4 against minors is not sufficient enough...And we have not utilised power hitting of Angelo and Thisara...Though Jeewan scord runs...I am not agree to send him at number 5...Thisara perera power hitting should e used at number 5....We can bear that risk since we have angelo,Jeewan & Thiri after that.....For the next match against South africa...I suggest two changes.....Wunaweera should be replaced by chandimal asthe opner...Since chandimal has handled the South African fast bowlers very well in africa ,it can bea advantage to us...Further since South Africa is not playing well against spinners.....Kule should be replaced by Hearth or Dhanajaya...and Malinga nd open the bowl with thisara........Hope Mahela with bat with bit agressition..

@cool2cool, at least Indian fan praveen4honestremark is a nice guy like how I have seen him often behave in forums as he has again posted a true fair comment in this article too. Do you know that Sri Lanka beat Australia 4 times in ODIs so far this calender year. So this win last night is NO SURPRISE!

Posted by Sinhaya on (September 18, 2012, 20:22 GMT)

@cool2cool, biggest upsets??? I am rolling on the floor laughing seeing your comments! You cant admit Sri Lanka winning, simple as that! Sri Lanka has beaten all test playing nations plenty of times in ODIs. So Sri Lanka winning a T20 is no surprise. Obviously you are not following Sri Lankan cricket enough. How can a side which entered the 2009 T20 finals and also the 2010 T20 world cup semis cause an upset like this? You dont even know what you are talking! Dont be so bitter towards Sri Lanka.

Posted by   on (September 18, 2012, 20:18 GMT)

Seems Sangakarra was right about the pitches though. Those fast bowling nations like South Africa and Australia will love this.

Posted by   on (September 18, 2012, 20:14 GMT)

Come on guys. How many countries can play Malinga and Mendis well? As I recall He got 6-16 against australia last year. Should Australia's test match status be rescinded then? Otherwise SL looks good. Would love to see Chandimal though

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (September 18, 2012, 20:05 GMT)

I don't know why the Sri Lankans are celebrating this pathetic encounter ?!! Beating Zimbabwe was equivalent of beating a dead snake. Give me Ireland or Afghanistan ANY day over this team. I can't believe how the ICC have maintained Zimbabwe's test status. This team is simply a MINNOW in disguise. No improvement over several decades. How many more years will Zimbabwe need to finally compete with quality teams ? They used to be a decent team with Andy Flower, Alistair Campbell, Grant Flower, Craig Wishart, Heath Streak, Eddo Brandes, Paul Strang etc. Look at them now. I think Zimbabwe should be relegated to associate status. Ireland and Afghanistan both should be elevated to at least ODI status following this tournament.

Posted by QingdaoXI on (September 18, 2012, 20:02 GMT)

Very Good Bowling by Ajanta and Jeevan. Zimbabwe doesnt had any shot to play they look very rusty in this match, Sanga batted well, but still i think Mahela should open with Dilshan, Munaveera in local t-20 type player, he is not ready for international stage. I see SL in semi final after this match as the next opponents are South Africa and than in super eight stages West Indies, England and New Zealand who all will struggle to play the spin attack of SL, but for SL the problem will be in Knock out stages if India or Pakistan to qualifies from there, if they do SL will finish there tournament in Semi finals, if India or Pakistan doesnt come accross semi final than SL win will. I still think all 3 best Asian teams will be in Semi finals and the 4th Bangladesh should do well to qualify for Super eight stages.

Posted by rsherath on (September 18, 2012, 19:47 GMT)

Seem to be most of the ones put a premium on Ajantha Mendis. But a real deal is how he ball against India and Pakistan.

lets hope he perform agaist good teams too....its a nice performance :)

Posted by IndianROCKstars_2011_ODIchamps on (September 18, 2012, 19:29 GMT)

@AMRules ; There is no opening ceremony because SL does not have $$$. Recently I read on cricinfo just before T20 Worldcup started that ICC had given SL cricket board 2.5 miliion dollars as help to organise the tournament. It hilarious and tragic too, a board does not have that kind of money. Even Sir Ravindra Jadeja could have lend that amount money, forget Tendulkar,Dhoni and others. Point is India does not need to play SL on regular basis but its SL who come pleading and requesting to BCCI to play them. This helps them survive and pay basic salary to their team. If that was a fact and I was a SL fan , I dont think I would be talking like you do. I guess you get the hint.An IPL franchisee owner can own your entire SL team and keep them on bench all year round, just to stop your pest existence(franchisee will still make profit). India does not need SL its other way round.

Posted by amilag on (September 18, 2012, 19:09 GMT)

I told it earlier and say it again...Something big for SL cricket is looming...Go lions..go..

Posted by   on (September 18, 2012, 18:52 GMT)

Another Poor Performance by Zimbabwe...as expected..Srilanka should also focus their weakness in opening...as both Srilankan batsmen gived chances to an ordinary bowling line up...Mendis was good in bowling...a remarkable comeback...Sanga was also good..and for Zimbabwe..they should open with brendon taylor and vusi sibanda and try to stay on the wicket...or else they cant be stay in the tornament...

Posted by LynadThike on (September 18, 2012, 18:51 GMT)

Yes Ireland look like a better side right now but people need to remember that Zim has not had a proper international series since February! Ireland on the other hand could not have asked for a much better lead up to this tournament. Proper match practice cannot be achieved in the nets.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (September 18, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

Zim should have to qualify for future tournaments, let them prove they can beat teams like the Netherlands. That was an amateurish performance, even the fielding was sub-club standard.

Posted by   on (September 18, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

Mendis is back, the last game he played for Sri Lanka he took 6 wickets against Australia, so 12 wickets in 2 games for Mendis. I hope SL plays Akila Danajaya for a seamer against South Africa. Mendis and Danajaya would be too much mystery for most batting line ups

i dont want to see sl selectors doing mistake by selecting munaweera over chandimal .yes i agree chandimal is not perform well in reason past but he is very talented player than munaweera . munaweera is not mature enough to play international cricket yet, he has to learn a lot about timing and how to go for more singles rather than try to slog each and every ball . i dont want to see sl selectors do the same mistake which bcci did by selecting muraly vije just because of ipl performance

Well Done SriLanka.. Some of them are saying t20 is backyard cricket. When they come to know that their team is weak in this format and less chances to achieve the goal, they keep saying like this. Already some of them are saying "no favourites" in this format. Let see how many matches can minnows win against big teams. I think one day matches have more chances for minnows than the t20's. So i would say people keep saying like this when they see no hope for their teams.

I expected a counter-attack from Zimbabwe in batting, but it was not to be only because of some great bowling from Ajanta Mendis and Jeevan Mendis.
