Pakistan at the precipice

Match facts

October 2, 2012
Start time 1530 local (1000 GMT)

Big Picture

One poor showing, against India no less, has suddenly thrown Pakistan's World Twenty20 campaign onto far less certain ground than it had occupied solidly since day one of the tournament. Another loss to Australia, the competition's most assured and dominant team so far, and the Pakistanis will be highly unlikely to make the semi-finals. It is a harsh scenario, but a reflection of the competition's format, calling for consistent results. The hesitance and doubt evident against India must quickly be shed from the minds and limbs of Pakistan's cricketers, but the looming possibility of elimination may not aid the return of a state of focus.

By contrast, Australia know they do not even need to win to progress, for they will qualify for the semi-finals unless Pakistan can inflict the sort of thrashing George Bailey's men have commonly dealt out so for, and a similar margin unfolds in India's match against South Africa. So far led with exceptional poise and power by the irrepressible Shane Watson, the Australians have not had their depth of batting tested. Nevertheless, the likes of Michael Hussey and Cameron White have shown decent touch in their brief stays at the crease, and the confidence of all players has benefited from Watson's show of strength.

These two sides are very familiar with one another, having contested T20 and ODI series in the UAE as a prelude to this event. Australia began that T20 series floundering, and ended it with growing confidence. They have gone up another notch or three since, while Pakistan have been shaken by the India defeat. Mohammad Hafeez's team will hope to regain the confidence they showed in Dubai, or risk elimination from an event they looked in with a chance to win a few days ago.

Watch out for

The outstanding display by Xavier Doherty on his recall to the team has placed some pressure on Brad Hogg for his spot in the XI, should Australia wish to revert back to a one spinner policy against teams better versed at slow bowling than South Africa. Hogg has bowled tidily enough during the tournament, and offered plenty of energy in the field. But he has only two victims at a cost of 53.50 so far, and will need to provide a greater impact on the wickets column as the tournament reaches its pointy end.

Plenty of chatter has surrounded Mohammad Hafeez's surprisingly halting display with the bat and in the field against India. While there is some understanding at the occasion getting the better of Hafeez and his team, Pakistan's captain must show greater steel against Australia in order to push his team to the next phase. Hafeez should be helped by a return to the top of the bowling attack, for his spin has troubled David Warner in the past.

Team news

Pakistan can either make changes in reaction to the heavy defeat against India or keep faith with the XI that had previously looked so poised at this event.

Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Yasir Arafat, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Raza Hasan

Xavier Doherty will be very difficult to drop from Australia's XI following his exceptional 3 for 20 against South Africa.

Australia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Mike Hussey, 4 Cameron White, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Brad Hogg, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Xavier Doherty

Pitch and conditions

As expected, the Premadasa Stadium surface is growing more sluggish and spin friendly with each passing match. It will not be too far removed from the Dubai surface on which Australia and Pakistan last met.

Stats and trivia

  • A win for Australia would equal their longest winning streak in T20Is, a span of six matches at the 2010 World T20 in the Caribbean
  • Defeat for Pakistan would have them miss the semi-finals of the World T20 for the first time. They were finalists in 2007, winners in 2009 and beaten semi-finalists in 2010

Quotes

"Things are just falling my way at the moment, I suppose. Things can turn and your form can go against you so you've got to make the most of it while you can."
Shane Watson hopes he won't have to wake up soon.

Brilliant bolwing by Pakistan today. Completely tied the Australian top order up. Some pretty ordinary sweep shots offered from the first 3 to go, but those shots were required because of the pressure exerted by Pakistan's excellent dsiplay. Very well played! I wouldn't be surprised if this result is enough for Pakistan to qualify. For Australia, firstly Maxwell needs to be dropped from the team. His horror show miss at first slip today was just the first of many mistakes and at the time of this clanger, Pakistan would have been reeling with 2 wickets taken in their 2nd over with only a few runs on the board. Very costly and inexcusable. Nonetheless, 150 is around a par score for that wicket and the batting display was very poor. None of the lads were timing anything, not even the bad balls. I realised we were in trouble when the leg side full toss to Watson not only didn't get dispatched, it didn't even bring up a single! Luckily for Australia, we get another shot at it in the semi's.

Aus 15/1 in 3.4 ovrs. . .. . Great breakthrough provided by Raza Hasan. Watson b raza 8(14).

  • Sports4Youth on October 2, 2012, 11:37 GMT

Pakistan have given Australia a target of 150. Looking at the form of watson & hussey it may not be sufficient. But if they get the oppeners early & the spinners get in to act, things can be different.

  • Sports4Youth on October 2, 2012, 11:10 GMT

in 15.1 ovrs pak 103/4. back to back wickets. Jamshed and Kamran gone in a space of 3 delivers. two brand new batsmen on the crease for last 5 ovrs. Nothing could go more wrong for Pakistan.

  • Sports4Youth on October 2, 2012, 10:45 GMT

Pakistanis are too tentative. Australia will play freely , especially if Watson & Warner play freely and get going then they could finish the game in 15 ovrs. Instead of Pakistan winning by big margin, it looks that Pakistan will loose by a big margin.

  • Sports4Youth on October 2, 2012, 10:43 GMT

After 9 ovrs. Pak - 49/2. Australias place in the semis is almost confirmed. Becuase now practically Australia cannot loose by a big Margin. though mathematically it will be confirmed after a while. Looks like Imran Nazir has played his last game. Hafeez has captained his last game. Gul also has to prove himself quickly.

  • on October 2, 2012, 10:35 GMT

Hafeez, this is ruthless world. You are as good as your last mistake. Pack it up. You have no place in the team if you loose today.

  • Harshmeswanirafanadal on October 2, 2012, 10:19 GMT

Being an indian fan obviously want aussies to win but i wish aus and pak best of luck they are both good teams and deserve a semi final spot as much as india do. It is only because of the unfair grouping that ind, aus, pak and sa cant go through.

  • on October 2, 2012, 9:52 GMT

Though I support Australia, I wish either Pak or India to win the cup. But unfortunately both teams lack consistency and inspiration. I agree only Pak can beat Australia if they play today with their full potential. At the same time, I also wish India to beat SA so that both Pak and India enter semi-finals.

Hafeez lost the toss, Pak bat. Abdul Razzaq is in that is good news But he has come in at the cost of a good bowler. Yasir Arafat has taken 5 wickets in this tournament (the highest among pakistanis) , he has given away fewer runs, his average was good and economy good. All the above stats are far better than Umar Gul who has taken only 2 wickets at an average of 65.5 and economy 10.91. I feel Abdul Razzaq should have come in at the expense of Umar Gul. Also Hafeez has taken a big risk in Imran Nazir, I hope Nazir gives them a quickfire 20-25 atleast, or else this could be his last match of his cricketing career.

  • Sports4Youth on October 2, 2012, 9:38 GMT

Hafeez has lost the toss this time. He has been put in to bat. So it does not matter if he win the toss or losses, because in any case he will bat.

  • on October 2, 2012, 9:37 GMT

It'd be the shock if we beat the Aussies, who I see going on to win this T20 WC unbeaten. If we win this, we win the T20 WC.

  • Sachin_Fan_2012 on October 2, 2012, 9:30 GMT

What happens if both matches are rained out !! I guess Pak and Aus will go through?

  • on October 2, 2012, 9:16 GMT

I am not sure about Razzaq but I think we need asad in the middle to hold on when our batting is falling apart. I think Imran is a gamble in the game of T20, he might score some quick runs and might just out at 8. But given his fearless potential to explode, he will tickle the minds of Ausies for sure. I do expect Hafiz, Jamsheed, Kamran, Umar Akmal, Malik to play more bigger roles because someone has to hold the batting line up together, not everyone should be like imran nazir or afridi. From the bowling point of view I think Hassan, Hafiz should open the bowling and then followed by afridi and ajmal. We need solid 8 overs to put pressure on Aus batsmen to force them to make errors. I recon spin should bowl all the overs today. Keep the fast bowler as a option in case spinners fail to deliver. Gul should throw yorkers... as he used to if not watson will murder him with sixes.... one more thing... Ausies will be fearless today, they know that they are already in semi-finals..

  • on October 2, 2012, 9:14 GMT

Dear Hafeez we all know that against india we have to sacrifice due to govt orders.. but Please show the world today that Pakistan is the bestes team of T20 all around the world.. Show them what we can do that another team can't think of.. And Kindly Include Razaq against Yasir Arafat Because we know Razaq can change the game with in a few minutes :-) Best of Luck Pakistan... And Good to See A Brilient Player Kohli after Suchin Tandulkar and wish him best of luck to break the record of tandulkar in his career :-)

  • ms2000 on October 2, 2012, 9:14 GMT

Good luck Paklistan from Sri Lanka! You are a great team and its just a matter of all you click as a team for a few hours! Go Pakistan Go

  • Lightning.. on October 2, 2012, 9:13 GMT

Pakistan should replace Nazir with Asad Shafiq and Yasir Arafat with Razzak, the playing eleven should be in following order, Afridi, Nasir Jamshed, Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik, Razzak, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal and Raza Hassan... 8 batsman and 6 bowler ...

  • misterwaqar on October 2, 2012, 9:06 GMT

I would say Yasir Arafat should be replaced by Abdul Razzaq in this game. Arafat has not been impressive in the previous games whereas Razzaq can bowl and bat in pressure games like this.

  • Mohsin_Ali_Khan on October 2, 2012, 9:05 GMT

Hafeez must must abstain from opening the inning rather he should bat down the order. He may however open the bowling against Warner. Abdur Razak should come in for Yasir Arafat and Asad Shafique should replace Raza Hassan as Pakistan have already enough spin bowling options with Hafeez and Shoaib Malik along side Afridi and Ajmal. The batting order should be as follows: If first three players provide a good flying start without early wickets then 1) Kamran Akmal 2) Nasir Jamshed 3) Imran Nazir 4) Umer Akmal 5) Shoaib Malik 6) Abdul Razak 7) Asad Shafiq 8) Shahid Afridi 9) Hafeez 10) Umer Gul 11) Saeed Ajmal. However in case first 3 players fail then Shoaib Malik and Asad Shafiq may be promoted up the order before Umer Akmal. Also in bowling wickets are the key and Pakistan will have to keep themselves in attacking mode to put pressure on the Aussies.

  • spnair on October 2, 2012, 9:03 GMT

Today Aussies will win ....... Pak is a very good team but chance is very low..........

  • shezad577 on October 2, 2012, 8:59 GMT

one thing which i like mostly about MS Dhoni that he can handle pressure so easily n do alot of experiments that why he is successful...Although Hafeez can do good match analysis but he cant handle pressure situation... Ajmal should ball atleast 2 overs in 1st 10 over if he successes to build up pressure then it will b easy for the rest of the bowler to maintain the pressure

  • on October 2, 2012, 8:56 GMT

    1. Nasser Jamsheed 2. Umar Akmal/Kamran Akmal 3. Assad Shafiq 4. Shahid Afridi 5. Mohammad Hafeez 6. Kamran Akmal/Umar Akmal 7.Abdul Razzak 8. Imran Nazir 9. Umar Gul 10. Saeed Ajmal 11. Raza. Mohammad Hafeez could be pushed further down the order if the wickets do not fall early in the innings.

  • on October 2, 2012, 8:56 GMT

Pakistan must adopt a the balance approach they are always most comftable with 3 pacers and 3 spiners. Razaq Tanvir must be in for Yasir and Raza. Asad Shafiq at 3 must be in for Nazir. Kamran and Jamshed must open, hafeez must play at 6th. Umar Akmal must be at 5.

  • MuradSheikh on October 2, 2012, 8:50 GMT

  • Bay-Lagaam on October 2, 2012, 8:46 GMT

Hafeez Bhai... Win the toss and choose to bowl 1st as Ausies are looking very hungry to chase any score they needed, put ur best bowlers to get top 3 out 1st over by Raza Hassan, Second by You or Ajji Bhai... dont look for seamers until u really need them to bowl... if watson and warner gone in 1st 5 overs thn victory will be ours INSHALLAH.. Please don't be panic and hasitnt as we want you to play good, winning is another matter.

  • on October 2, 2012, 8:46 GMT

Scenario: Australia beat Pakisthan...... and India v/s SA match can get washed also no probs.... Then we can reach semi finals

  • on October 2, 2012, 8:45 GMT

Defeat for PAK against AUS and win for IND against SA will be good to watch. Waiting to see both the matches. Heart is pumping like F1 race. Expecting Sehwag in crease for 10 overs and MSD to come to crease ONLY at 19th over. This simple idea will do the magic.

  • Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas on October 2, 2012, 8:43 GMT

DAY OF RECKONING ! Pakistan ( the Giant-Killers ) need to do what they do best i.e. "demolish the best sides" -!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of Afridis, Nazirs, Guls & Akmals must fire on all cylinders and repeat the dose ( comprehensive win in Dubai Sep 2012 ) !!!!!! Australians have had their "FUN IN THE SUN" and its "APOCALYPSE NOW" time ! Present Pakistani side served this Australian side their WORST T20Int. DEFEAT (31 balls to spare) - shackling the Watson & co. when Aussies went more than 15 overs without a boundry!!!!!!!! Pakistan just need to follow their KILLER INTINCTS, play their natural AGGRESSIVE game!!!!! Hafeez should ignore the "Whatmore trash" and talk to his team mates to engineer the demise of Australians towards a decisive victory to avoid the perms. BE RUTHLESS, do not them a sniff ( else they will take yards ). Regardless of results, We ALWAYS LOVE our PLAYERS & expect usual TITANIC effort from you ( giving sweat + blood for Pakistan )! Go Paki - Power to You !!!!!!

@umaird :- But in that case worse team will be out of the tournament. But all we want is better team to qualify.I want Ind and Pak both to win.In that case even if Pak qualifies,We Indians will be supporting them to win the cup again.

  • on October 2, 2012, 8:34 GMT

Agree to the team by Junaid Akbar. I would say Afridi OR Yasir Arafat.Imran Nazir has enough chances. One cannot play like that with that much of inconsistency. Same goes for Mr.BOOM BOOM.He is just there for his media repo. More deserving palyers are sitting outside.

    1) Mohammad Hafeez (capt) 2) Nasir Jamshed 3) Kamran Akmal (wk) 4 )Shoaib Malik 5) Asad Shafiq 6) Umar Akmal 7) Abdul Razzak 8) Shahid Afridi 9) Umar Gul 10) Saeed Ajmal 11) Raza Hasan

People of Pakistan - it just wasn't our night against the Indians. It happens. We the supporters can be as emotion as we want with our wins and losses. But team Pakistan must learn to graciously accept their winnings for the losses shouldn't hurt them as much as last game has. In humility we must win and lose. I hope Pakistan players are experienced enough to think beyond last game and MOVE ON from their loss for today is a new day. Thats what t20 is all about any ways. GO GREENS.

  • fetchy49 on October 2, 2012, 8:14 GMT

I think some of the aussies who haven't had a bat should be moved up the order so they get a bat before the semi's. I still would rather have steve smith (he should be in the squad) than bailey and i would have him as captain seeing as he was the captain that won the big bash. :D

  • Shafi79 on October 2, 2012, 8:09 GMT

Pakistan have always been a Jekyll and Hyde type of team ... if Dr Jekyll turns up today ... we might see Pakistan getting in to the semi finals today. Add to this the fact that Watson has scored in every game so far ... he has to fail at some point right? could that be today??? Wishing the Pakistani's the best of luck from Sri Lanka ... hope to see you guys in the semi's :)

  • Syed_imran_abbas on October 2, 2012, 8:02 GMT

Imran nazir should be replaced with asad shafeeq in middle order and razzaq should be in for arfart. And raza hassan with sohail tanvir. Pakistan must preserve wickets to wicket. they will have to control that over aggression.

  • on October 2, 2012, 8:02 GMT

Whether it was the pressure of Indian team or gambling that Zardari League was trying to play but its all totally disgraceful. Pakistani team was never expected to show such a behaviour.

  • dmqi on October 2, 2012, 7:58 GMT

FINALLY AFTER BEING THRASHED BY INDIA, WE WILL SEE FEW CHANGES IN PAK TEAM. I HOPE THE CAPTAIN AND TEAM SELECTORS UNDERSTAND THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE GOOD BATSMEN IN THE TEAM. HIT OR MISS PLAYERS CAN NOT WIN AGAINST GOOD TEAMS. RAZZAQUE AND ASAD ARE TWO IMPORTANT PLAYERS SITTING OUT. DROP CATCH MAY COST PAKISTAN THE MATCH TODAY. AUS HAS MANY WINNERS IN THEIR TEAM. PAK HAS NONE LIKE THEM.

  • AndrewFromOz on October 2, 2012, 7:51 GMT

A strange situation that Pakistan can't find room in the XI for Razzaq and Oz can't find room for Dave Hussey. Funny old game this...

  • imghani on October 2, 2012, 7:45 GMT

Pakistan team should make some changes in their group. There is no room for Imran Nazir, Afridi and Yaser Arafat in the T20 team at all. The captain as well as coach should think seriously before starting the match.

    1) Mohammad Hafeez (capt) 2) Nasir Jamshed 3) Kamran Akmal (wk) 4 )Shoaib Malik 5) Asad Shafiq 6) Umar Akmal 7) Abdul Razzak 8) Shahid Afridi 9) Umar Gul 10) Saeed Ajmal 11) Raza Hasan

  • Abiminhas on October 2, 2012, 7:43 GMT

According to my Calculations, If Pak beat Aus to minimum 40 runs or at the case of chasing Pakistan chase any target with 10 runs/ovet RR, then Pakistan NRR Will definitely higher than Australia.

  • jonesy2 on October 2, 2012, 7:43 GMT

they should rest warner, watson, cummins and starc, bring in hussey to open with wade to get wade some batting opportunity and bring in mckay, hilfenhaus and christian: wade, david, maxwell, christian, white, bailey, mike, mckay, hogg, hilfenhaus, doherty.

  • on October 2, 2012, 7:42 GMT

Why are we bashing hafeez captaincy all of a sudden? yes the team failed as a unit but i think he didnt set attacking field because he didnt want india to end up having a even better NRR and starting second in the group Today! Secondly Afridi was useless at no.8 anyways so i think it was good decision to send him at no.3 cuz he might have made use of the powerplay but unfortunately he failed but the decision had logic just didnt work for us... Lastly why is there so much Bring in ASAD SHAFIQ an extra batsman!!! Guys at one hand you want pak to score 160+ and on the other u want asad shafiq in too? hafeez is slow already we dont need another slow one for a 20 20 game! Razzaq should come in place of yasir arafat and umar akmal should be promoted up the order too! Hope pak wins today :)

  • on October 2, 2012, 7:39 GMT

We should not play double gamble with Australia....Afridi is always a Gamble but should be included as a bowling option..! Imran Nazir is Gamble no. 2.....We should add Asad shafique a far more accomplished batsman at one- down position. I think Yasir Arafat should be replaced with and Sohail Tanvir or Razaq. We need two good pacers as this Wicket gives initial swing with new ball.

  • mtalhas on October 2, 2012, 7:38 GMT

India gets thrashed by AUS and earns a win after hard work against teams like BAN and AFG, whereas PAK defeats all these teams which defeated IND. On the other hand PAK gets defeated by IND (who has nothing but a below par street cricket level bowling attack). Its hard to digest what goes around in international cricket. Every team is a mystery in itself and has left nothing for the fans except for them to scratch their heads and suffer heartburns. PAK and IND are not different. Lets see whats the result of todays match.

  • AmjadZork on October 2, 2012, 7:38 GMT

I read one of the comments below & i totally agree with that. Imran Nazir cannot play class Fast bowlers like Steyn, Southee, Mitchell Johnson, Bret Lee.. He could never play against them even in the past... Although AUS bowlers are not that good today !!!

  • AbdaliTigers on October 2, 2012, 7:34 GMT

Pakistan should replace imran nazir with asad Shafiq and Arafat with Razaq and open with kamran akmal and hafeez and put asad on at no 4. For bowling Hafeez should starts with ajmal for conquered watson.

  • on October 2, 2012, 7:34 GMT

Picking up watson n warner at the start of the match will may be make some difference..otherwise pak is going to lose this match.

  • arshcrk on October 2, 2012, 7:26 GMT

today's pitch will be favour 2 bowlers as we've seen it in the past .pakisthan seemers has to bowl aggressivly as well spinners.warner-watson partnership will be a gr8 head ache for paksithan.if pakisthan cud get der wicket early den its easy game 4 pak bowlers.i dont think australian middle order batsmen r gud in making score.the key players like watson-warner-hussey r the run flowing batsmen 4 dem.its been a quite long pakisthan batsmen r poor in batting .i hope pakisthan will surely show a great change in der batting level..gud lUcK pakisthan

Come on IMRAN NAZIR, before it that World forget your name forever from today, play another brilliant innings to throw Pakistan in to the Semi Final. It is not just a dream but you never know it can be happen and you may expect this from world's most unpredictable team and their every individual player.

PlzzZzzZz.... Hear my yelllllllllling request... KICK OUT YASIR ARAFAT once and FOREVER. BRING IN ABDUR-RAZZAQ IN PLACE OF HIM. We DESPERATELY NEED HIM!!!!!!!!!! And Hafeez plz walk down the ground with some killing instinct and attacking mind frame. You got'ta have some game plan ("Plan A" or else "Plan B") to get rid of 2 W's Aussies earlier on OR else you're GONE!!! If batting 1st, make sure not to throw away your wkt in 1st power play. If batting 2nd, worth play gamble, sending Afridi to open the inns with Imran Nazir..as we got'ta be concious abt NRR thing as well..cuz it's gonna be crucial by the end of the day.. Good Luck team Pakistan!

Imran nazir can perform only at low pressure games...& at low level .. Afridi should take retirement ....GUYZ check the stats before commenting in favour of these two idiots... Yasir arafat has never performed at international level so he should be dropped to.. Unfortunately our bench is too weak to drop all these at once. Atleast shafiq & Razzaq should be included in the side

This is an excellent opportunity for the Pakistani players to demonstrate their massive skill, team spirit and capability how to turn the Victory. Effectively, you need to Bow down and focussed toward the objective. Don't take a pressure of a big match, only forefront with sense of responsibility and aim the target. Certainly, you will be in semi final.

  • raihan927 on October 2, 2012, 7:08 GMT

I dont think PAK deserved to be in the semi final of this world cup..due to continued corruption in the selection of team they must loose this match too...selection of imran nazir is still questionable who has performed against BD only on CHANCE...FOR AFRIDI fans his cricket is over a long time ago he has played over 350 ODIs and he is not a match winner at all..His day comes in every 25th or 30th match which cannot make him a match winner.plz check the stats of his performance. Also inclusion of ARAFAT instead of real match winner RAZZAQ is still questionable. In 2nd T20 against AUS RAZZAQ was sent to open the innings and he also bowled the last over which means he is the biggest hitter in critical situations and the faith was there. If AFRIDI & NAZIR are better than why weren't they sent as opener..

  • on October 2, 2012, 7:00 GMT

  • FAiSAL.SHaH.oNe.X on October 2, 2012, 6:59 GMT

Pakistan will have to win today bcoz its a last chance and a high pressure on Pakistan team. Arafat should be replace by Razzaq today. And they should need Asad Shafiq in today. Well It will be a good match between HUSSEY XI vs KHASSI IX.

This is the real test for Hafeez because if Pak can knock Warner and Watson out, the game really is open. If Watson clicks, Pak can pack their bags I think. If not, they're in with a big chance. Hafeez has to show incredible steel and I think he has it in him. Pak as a unit is strong enough to win this cup, but are they mentally ready to rise to the occasion? We need Razzaq back in the side for these games unfortunately. Until Umar Akmal, Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Jamshed et al really gain that experience, they just don't have the nerve to out-pressure the big sides on the biggest stages. If Afridi and Razzaq click in a big way, everyone's morale will rise and drops will become catches, 2's will become 1's on the field and 1's will become 2's with the bat, 3 dot balls will become 5 etc. Pakistan in form and on song is a formidable side. Everyone has seen it. We need the big game players to come out of their bad-form month!

  • on October 2, 2012, 6:49 GMT

    If Pakistan wants to win they must go with this combination. Please someone convey this to Hafeez;

1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt) 2 Imran Nazir 3 Kamran Akmal (wk) 4 Nasir Jamshed 5 Asad Shafiq 6 Umar Akmal 7 Abdul Razzak 8 Shahid Afridi 9 Umar Gul 10 Saeed Ajmal 11 Raza Hasan

  • on October 2, 2012, 6:48 GMT

Imran Nazir can't play against Australians. Asad Shafiq must be in to minimize disaster in Pakistani batting lineup. Remove Yasir Arafat and Pick Razaq. Todays pitch is helpful for spinners, which is good for Pakistan.

  • Ajamalh on October 2, 2012, 6:47 GMT

Pakistan should put their heads down and work hard and avoid outside pressure as much as possible. They crumbled under pressure against India even before the match started.

  • hot_youngs on October 2, 2012, 6:43 GMT

only two changes are required, 1st Razzak should be the part of Playing Eleven and Second Change of Captain, We want fighting captain. If Australia score 136 runs in 20 overs and pakistan chased the score in 14.4 overs, Pakistan will be in Top in Group and qualifies for the semis....

  • on October 2, 2012, 6:35 GMT

from the last match against India... Hafeez should admit that he cant handle the pressure situations... the way he bats n even on the field he was not giving his 100%, in the low scoring match he was totally confused what to do... secondly still i am not getting that why they are picking Yasir Arafat in the team they should drop nazir n Arafat n pick razzaq and Tanvir against the Aussies kamran akmal should open... Imran Nazir performance at the domestic level is not that much good their are alot of people waiting for their chance such as Gohar and rizwan from KPK.

  • MAK123 on October 2, 2012, 6:31 GMT

Against Australia its different ball game. Don't blame individual player. We have been losing against India since 1992 world Cup. Country want Pakistan team to fight, no matter what the results are because that is the only thing they can do.

Australia is in that groove that won them 3 ODI world cups in a row and the champions trophy a couple of years ago. When they are in that mind set they are almost impossible to beat. SL is the only team that will push them and that will be in the final. However, Australia in a final is an almost sure thing. Pakistan have two chances of wining tonight, None and Buckly's.

  • on October 2, 2012, 5:38 GMT

Pakistan should replace Yasir Arafat with Abdul Razzaq (Razi Bhai) so that to progress in the tournament. Don't know why Pakistan is playing Yasir Arafat in this shorter format when we have best option of all-round services of Razi Bhai. He is good in this format. Pakistan should make Abdul Razzaq play as he also has a good record. He will definately do better than Arfat and his experience with bowling can bring plus to the side.

For Pakistan, how many times have seen Pakistan throwing themselves out or putting themselves down. For me keep the things simple do not experiment more as this is not the time to make changes in the team or batting order. I have read people saying the afridi should come down, u akmal should come at 4, bla bla...for god sake they are proper batsman they should have bat at any order or position given. Pakistan should have to play aggressively, put Razzaq in for Y Arafat.. Rest all fine. Team + Batting Order : Hafeez,Nazir,Jamshed, U Akmal, Malik, K Akmal,Afridi,Razzaq,Umar Gul,Saeed Ajmal,Raza Hassan

Pakistan fights better under pressure. They have defeated Australia in recently held series at EAE on the similar pitches. On the other hand India may falter against South Africa as Garry Kristen knows in an out of Indian team and won't allow kolhi to score freely. If Kolhi does not score, India cannot make to semi's. Iam positive, Pakistan will make to finals

  • colombo_SL on October 2, 2012, 4:27 GMT

  • henchart on October 2, 2012, 4:04 GMT

@BravoBravo:Hypothetically speaking, Aus beat Pak by 1 run and SA-IND match is rained out-PAK take the flight back to their country while Ind prepare for the Lanka test.Let us not bring hypothesis ,in here, as cricket is going to be played on ground and pitch which is detriorating .Pak and Ind have better chances of winning against Aus and SA if spinners are used judiciously by their respective skippers.

  • VivtheGreatest on October 2, 2012, 4:01 GMT

Hope Aus knock Pakistan out- Best Wishes from India!

  • Marcio on October 2, 2012, 3:47 GMT

As an Aussie supporter, this is a fun match, as there is almost no chance they can miss the semis (touch wood!). Basically, if they score over 100 they can't possibly be knocked out. As someone pointed out, giving the middle order some time in the middle would be good. Guys like Maxwell and Wade haven't batted at all in this WC, as far as I'm aware. The other great thing is that AUS get more practice against a very good spin attack. That will come in very handy if they make the final against, say SL. So it seems all the pressure is on PAK here. Will be interesting to see how they handle it.

  • on October 2, 2012, 3:35 GMT

  • on October 2, 2012, 3:16 GMT

pakistan rely too much on individual performances with batting and that makes them really dangerous if one of their batsman does get going. Australia look a far more settled side. I just love how Australians play with aggression and intent...they just never give up. looking forward to d match...pakistan need to hunt as a team or ajmal show alone might not be enough against the mighty aussies

  • Happy_AusBang on October 2, 2012, 2:58 GMT

It is in the small aspects of the game that the match will be won or lost - singles taken or denied, catches taken or dropped. There is no point in putting pressure on opposing batsmen but allowing them singles. In the same way if PAK's batsmen are under pressure they should try to conjure singles first instead of trying to blast their way out of it.

  • cric4world on October 2, 2012, 2:17 GMT

Pakistan will never make it to semi final. in game against india we saw that experience of captaincy does make a big difference. dhoni kept his side cool n calm n they only did basic things they didnt try anything extra ordinary. but pakistan tried to do too much in too little time n result was a disaster. same is going to happen today bcoz this time they literally have to do too much in too little time . australia is just too professional to know it before even the match starts and trust me australia is gonna toy with pakistanis brain . dav whatmore doesnt seem to have a grip on this pakistani team at all.well we had couple of good wins but we r gona miss semi this time :(

  • on October 2, 2012, 2:16 GMT

sorry to say but Hafeez has poor judgement not only he did not play Razzaq/Shaiq against India but he defends the decision of playing same 11 as if it is test cricket . It is T20 sir a different form where you dont have to much time to bring back lost form so lets be clear that we play with Razzaq/Shaifiq instead of Yasir/Kamran Akmal (yes thats right, he never clicks when its really needed..) Hafeez should make sure that he uses Saeed Ajmal / boom boom properly to topple Watson/Hussey - They are most dangerours at the moment. Also sending Afridi early wont make any difference as he tries to hit every ball and in 1st class cricket it does NOT work.

  • cricket.lover.at.his.best on October 2, 2012, 2:01 GMT

Mr. Professor has been a poor captain so far. He has already committed so many blunder in this short era of his captaincy. I hope today he might justify his place as a captain. We can just hope and pray for a Pakistan victory.

  • on October 2, 2012, 1:50 GMT

Being a Pakistani fan - I want Pakistan to win, but Aussies are being flawless and they look invincible. But remember Pakistan is the most unpredictable side ..on their day they can defeat any team !

The real competition will be between Ajmal and Watson and I think Ajmal might prevail and have a better of Watson- that's the only chance for Pakistan.

Raza hasan is also bowling very well but he's not a winner. Hafeez has to bat bravely

They must play Razzaq he's a big match player !

I dunno what to do with Afridi - perhaps its time for him to bid farewell to cricket

  • BravoBravo on October 2, 2012, 1:23 GMT

  • Sports4Youth on October 1, 2012, 23:37 GMT

All the successful teams have their best players at the top. Warner-Watson-Hussey. Also the Sri Lankans had tried for sometime by moving Dilshan/Jayawardane down the order but it failed badly. Finally when their top players started playing at the top order, they clicked big-time. What is wrong with Hafeez ? Why he wants to learn the hard way ? He can even learn by observing others.

  • Sports4Youth on October 1, 2012, 23:34 GMT

Nasir Jamshed had started in such great form. Even in the Asia cup he was great. But the professor has spoilt the whole thing by constantly moving him around. Hafeez does not like it when something is going good. Unnecessary he starts fidling with it untill it is spoilt. If having Imran Nazir in the team is very important then you can have him at no.3, but please stop moving Jamshed around. as it is Pak was not finding a good opener since the last 2 years and when you found him, you want to convert him into a no.3 or a no.4. what is the point ? Again you will start hunting for an opener and wont find a new opener.

  • on October 1, 2012, 23:29 GMT

Pakistan's team is at the level of Bangladesh, Zimbawe and Ireland. It is a folly for them to enter into competition with teams like India, South Africa. Their once in a while win over countries such as New Zeland or South Africa is just a fluke.Their true level is determined by the fact that they are unable to go the whole 20 overs against India (whose bowling attack is considered the weakest in the league of SA,WI,Australia etc.) is proof enough of their batting ability. As far as bowling goes, they were lucky to get two Indian wickets. As far as Kohli goes, none of the Pakistani bowler can even put Kohli in a difficulty, what to talk about getting him out.Shahid Afridi definately should consider retirement from cricket,as he tries to play gulli-danda in the game of cricket.

  • on October 1, 2012, 23:28 GMT

Pakistan should play first and should score 190 plus to win this match

  • indiafan76 on October 1, 2012, 23:22 GMT

For Pak to qualify, Pak has to win and hope India don't have a better win. Pak has almost no chance if they loose. Whoever wins beterrn Ind or SA will overtake them on NRR very easily.

Here is the scenario for India to Qualify: 1) Aus win vs Pak: India can qualify by winning against SA or by loosing to SA by not more than 3 runs or with 1-2 balls to spare. This will keep them above SA in NRR and also above Pak assuming Pak didn't loose by less than 2 runs 2) Pak win vs Aus: India has to win against SA and have a better win compared to Pakistan's win by 1 ball or 2 runs.

If both India & Pakistan win their matches, it is unlikely that Aus will loose out on NRR (Pak has to beat them by 40 runs to do that). So it will be between Ind and Pak on NRR (Scenario#2 outlined above).

  • cric-doctor on October 1, 2012, 22:52 GMT

  • disco_bob on October 1, 2012, 22:05 GMT

I think Watto will be more dangerous than ever in this game because he'll not only know that a loss doesn't matter but that he has the extra bonus of benefiting the batting practice of the lower order if he gets out cheaply. So my guess he will play as audaciously and recklessly as he can and probably end up not being able to get out. Be prepared for a rainstorm of 6's and maybe a few 12's out of the ground

  • ammadsaleem2000 on October 1, 2012, 22:03 GMT

Pakistan must start the game with positive mindset and show aggressive cricket specially in fielding and opt bowling first. And must bring Razzaq he is match winner and give dept in batting, focus must be bowled out Aussies as soon as early and chase the target as soon as possible, defiantly they get semi final spot

  • on October 1, 2012, 22:03 GMT

Let me add that one thing that India will qualify easily tomorrow. Being Pakistani it would be sad but Pakistan team is too complacent here. Pakistani team have everything right but the cricketing mind is not in the right place. If they sort that out no body can beat them. During Imran era everything was not right but the mind was at the right place to win. It's all about how strong you are mentally.

Watson has got 5 consecutive Man of the Match awards (one before T20 cup), this mean their middle order is rust and untested. They have not seen the pressure. Pakistan is the only bowling attack which pressurized their batting lineup. Go Green, Best of Luck Pakistan.

check cricinfo's overall t20 analysis. Umar Akmal and Imran Nazir have been the best t20 batsman for Pak. We need an impact player at the top. We have to be aggressive not defensive, yess asad is a good player but check his t20 stats. hafeez, asad both in the top order ?? hafeez shud drop down the order and bring razzaq. bowl first and play like cornered tigers. WE WILL WIN INSHALLAH with a good margin, GOOD LUCK

  • on October 1, 2012, 21:47 GMT

Well where indian's missed that trick , hafeez got that, i must say he is a professor, ppl are saying that why haffez didnt attack when pakistan was defending a small total, this is the reason he didnt attack and pakistan is still on no 2 on point tables, 129 was just a piece of cake for indians and hafeez made that hard on field, and come on people stop blaming AFRIDI for every game. he is doing good in bowling and in fielding , in both games our batting collapsed so every single batsman is responsible for this, replacing afridi with Razzak is useless because you loose your front line bowler and a good fielder, because razzak can be dangerous with bat not with ball and on field. so he should be replaced with arafat. as far australia and pakistan is concerned , my best wishes are with pakistan , just play your normal game win against australia and forget about semi final's. beating australia right now will be a bigger gift than beating india.

well, its going to be another loss for pakistan. My vision says its going to be a heavy loss for pakistan, something similar to what they had against Ind or even a bigger loss.Well,in this match pak is going against the best batsmen in this tournament also the most wickets in this tournament,i.e. Wato.Aus are completely balanced in both batting, fielding and the most important in the fielding.OZs don't drop catches like pak do.Pak currently does NOT have a single stable batter on whom they can rely.I can say their bowling is though above par but their batting is below the standards. The matches which pakistan have won, they won those matches with great difficulties n too close ones or super overs. Now its time for them to pack their bags.@ all Pak fans, please stop having those hopes n prayers, as these don't win matches. Performance on the field, experience, tactics and most important of all catches win the matches. So all get ready for a big hard hammer coming down on Pak! Go AUS THRASH em

  • shot274 on October 1, 2012, 21:46 GMT

Yes Pakistan is unpredictable and in the shortest format anything could happen. On merit however Australia should win easily and without being stretched. Pakistans batting is woeful to say the least. Umar Gul is the most over rated paceman , Afridi has not 'boom boomed' as long as memory allows one to go back and you cant win consistently with one world class player-Ajmal! And forget stats and what happened in UAE-and as far as ICC rankings are concerned on current form the team ranked below Ireland(some weeks ago only) look the most likely to win the competition!!!

To the novice numerologist. My prediction is that Pakistan will win and India will lose tomorrow. Pakistan will be in the SF and team India on the plane to wherever ! The stars line up.

i think Pakistan should bowl first and try to get ausies out as cheaply as possible and than finnish the game early to go through in this this tornument pakistan has chased better.

  • Zamana on October 1, 2012, 21:22 GMT

We are always critical of the team composition. Irrespective of who makes the final 11, they should play with passion and as a cohesive unit . They should be inspired and be ably led, consistent and intelligent. The approach should be fearless. They have had some convincing and one sided victories against the Australians. The initial overs will set the tempo- whether we are batting or bowling. I am convinced that this approach will bring a convincing victory and make them unstoppable. Praying for success.

A T20 match means turning your eyes from facts and figures, any thing can happen -any thing, and whole complexion of game progress can change within a span of 2-3 overs. Pak win is a possibility but getting placed in semi is a difficult proposition even after win against Austarlia - it has so many ifs & buts. Pakistan must bring changes in mindset and body language and of course changes in playing XI .... Hafeez to drop himself to no 4 position in batting and positively should promote in bowling as first bolwer against Australia. They should open batting with Nazir and Kamran or even Afridi ( for sure he will not waste overs like Hafeez) at worst can get out first ball he faces, but any thing can happen if he gets going.Razzaq to replace Yasir and there is no point in holding Ajmal oversif he chokes runs or gets wickets. I still believe Afridi and Razzaq will come out of their shells in this match. ............

  • seniorgators on October 1, 2012, 21:10 GMT

@ Rogerunionjack You have much more to worry about than OZ. Your recent contribution was " Well done England, one foot in the semis. We're on track to retain our crown. NZ were inadequate today, now all the pressure will be on the hosts come Monday. One bad match against India, and all the knives were out. Guess a few folks would be eating humble pie tonight." Well England has one foot on the plane and how is the taste of the pastry?

  • ayub.ans on October 1, 2012, 21:00 GMT

The way Hafeez led the team against India leads me to question his integrity as a captain (very odd field placings and extremely slow batting). I hope Pakistan goes with a positive mind set and we definitely need Razzak back in the team, he should open the bowling with Hafeez.

  • perl57 on October 1, 2012, 20:44 GMT

I believe Pakistan should go with Afridi at 1 down and them playing with circumspect for first 8 overs. Do not bother if the score is 40 at the end of 8 because their spinners can make Oz hop. At the end of 8 if they lose first then Afridi coming over, bam bam bigelo!!! 120 in next 12 will put them in good standing. But bear in mind, Oz now cannot play pace as they got used to spin. :)

  • Zahidsaltin on October 1, 2012, 20:42 GMT

@Fancy_a_Flutter, all of these stats are created by Pakistan bowling. It is batting which is the problem mate.

  • Zahidsaltin on October 1, 2012, 20:39 GMT

@sports4youth, No won selects teams on the basis of short term stats. Arfats wickets didn't come because of some decent bowling. Most of them are taken in last two overs when batsmen just blindly throw their bats on the ball and get caught at the boundry. Arfat has been a useless bowler who has got beaten badly. No doubt Gul has even worse figures but going by Guls skills he can bounce back at any time where as Arfat can't be better than this.

  • on October 1, 2012, 20:37 GMT

pleas give chance to abdul razaq

  • Zahidsaltin on October 1, 2012, 20:34 GMT

RAZZAQ should replace Arfat and he should bat at 3. NASIR JAMSHED should open with Hafiz and ASAD Shafiq should replace Imran Nazir. Australia has done their homework on Imran Nazir and every one knows that he won't survive australian fasties, specially Watsons indippers.

Also i am not sure why some ppl are insisting on changes at this stage of tournament.. Are we expecting the likes of Razzak or Shafiq who were simply warming the benches all this time, to come out all guns against AUSTRALIA under so much pressure ???

  • MUGS4664 on October 1, 2012, 20:19 GMT

Advisable to let ABDUL RAZZAK play instead of arafat, poor batting and bad balling by him, what we gonna do with his experience?

  • noplay on October 1, 2012, 20:17 GMT

Look at the teams at this stage of the tournament and you will see the ones who are still experimenting and the ones who have it down pat. This is professional sport and no amount of "inshaallah Pak will win"; "india will be in the finals"; "Asian teams in final" from fans will change that. Teams must go on the field with a plan not some vague theory about the opposition and play professional sport. Many countries short change fans and viewers by playing cricket by vaps, my own team WI, no less. The reason cricket boards can do this is because fans demand so little from them.

The entire blame of Pakistan's dismal performance is upon Hafeez's shoulder. Not only his captaincy but his batting as well lacked intent and put the entire time on back-foot. Even if the results are obvious the captain should always motivate the players to strive for victory. He should have belief in his team's ability. As far as Shahid Afridi is concerned, he has been an asset to the team. Inspite of working hard, things are not going his way. Razzaq should definitely be a part of the team and should replace Yasir Arafat. Another important change to the team should be Imran Nazir. Instead of him NasirJamshed should open the innings with Hafeez. Asad Shafiq should be included to strengthen the seemingly brittle middle order. And Umar Akmal should promoted up the order at No 4.

  • on October 1, 2012, 20:09 GMT

Guys I appreciate your opinions but let me remind you that Pak never won a match against India in any World Cup Format, so the last match don't count a lot beside that Pak has performed quite well against New Zealand, South Africa, Bangladesh and Pak has a very good record against Aus. Watson is in very good form but he is unable to play Ajmal, Hafeez. Just be positive and support Pak. We will win. In-Shaa-Allah

  • SamAsh07 on October 1, 2012, 20:09 GMT

Pakistan should replace Nazir, Arafat and Gul with Asad, Razzaq and Sami. Going by the tournament achievements, Gul has delivered nothing in terms of bowling!! Nazir only scored against Bangladesh while Arafat surely can't bat. Sami may be unpredictable but it's a gamble Pakistan should try, on his day, he can deliver just like M.Amir.

  • nilb on October 1, 2012, 20:09 GMT

@H-Shakil Damn true my friend. Pakistan is the most unpredictable side in the world. Just like the previous ones. This world T20 will be won by the team everyone thought least likely to win.

  • ammar7may on October 1, 2012, 20:04 GMT

Other low scoring matches won by teams batting first suggest that Pakistan batting performance was poor. The reasons of poor bowling were: 1) don't utilize pacers overs, when the ball was new, 2) not providing slip or attacking to any bowler to attack on the batsmen (one fielder could have spared from 11 men, as 10 can also field all around the ground), 3) giving Hafeez and Ajmal separated run or bowling in pieces, 4) Drop catches and poor fielding

Before I start, I would like to say that i hope Australia wins. They deserve it. Pakistan has been pathetic in very sense of the word. Now as to question who should be axed from further t20 matches, Afridi and Yasir Arafat, both whom people label as "all rounders" have not even showed up with neither the ball or bat, let alone both lol. AFRAIDI is just an irrational player, might as well put on blindfolds and bat. Balling has been really ordinary. No serious breakthroughs that he normally WAS known for. What's left of him? =D.

Mr. Brettig, appreciate your balanced overview/big picture of Aus Vs Pak match. Although, statistics don't always mean much in T20. BUT IN CASE, STATISTICS ARE SIGNIFICANT/POINT TO SOMETHING, then some of the following could have been included in "Stats and trivia" part ! (1) Pakistan have the most wins in Twenty20 internationals. (2) Pakistan boasts MOST (6) WINS against Australia in Twenty20 internationals. (3) Pakistan have dished Australia their worst T20 DEFEAT (31 balls to spare). (4) Australia's LOWEST innings fours (3) in T20 internationals was against one & only Pakistan. (5) Australia's second-lowest in Twenty20 internationals ( 89 ) was also (again) Pakistan. (6) Only T20 matches Australia failed to hit a six were against - yes Pakistan AGAIN ! (7) Australia failed to hit a boundry for >15 overs stretch in a T20 match : No rocket science, answer is PAKISTAN ! *** Back to square one, for Pete's sake, in T20 In T20 anything can happen on any day !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sports4Youth on October 1, 2012, 19:07 GMT

In my earlier comment I had recommended bringing in Abdul Razzaq in place of Yasir Arafat. But now after checking the performances in this tournament I found some very suprising stats. Umar Gul has taken only 2 wickets from 4 games at an avg of 65.50 runs per wicket and an economy of 10.91 which is one of the worst in the tournament. As a result of his poor performance in this WC he stands on the 49th position in the highest wicket takers of this tournament. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/icc-world-twenty20-2012/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?id=6856;type=tournament , Whereas Y.Arafat has taken 5 wickets, avg 10, eco 6. Arafat is highest pakistani on that list. That prompts me to change my preference and bring A.Razzaq in place of U.Gul, & A.Shafiq in place of I.Nazir.

  • psu19976 on October 1, 2012, 19:06 GMT

bring razzaq back instead of arafat he is as competitve as watson for australia. he is should try arafat in odis if he wants to not here we should give strength to the team batting and razzaq had won too many games single handedly for pakistan we all are witnesss to that. it is disrespect that hafeez is showing towards razzaq. he has performed far better in county cricket both with the bat and ball. afridi has done better in the previous twenty wordld cup with the bat up the order so he shoud be again given a chance and razzaq should be there for the end overs

@BenGeorge-mgr810qa. I strongly suggest you think of a alternative career path mate. All your predictions are wrong. Pakistan are at their best when the pressure is on. Australia will seriously struggle against the best spin attack in world cricket and Pakistan will annihilate the Aussies just like we did in the UAE.

  • on October 1, 2012, 19:02 GMT

  • Yousufosman4u on October 1, 2012, 19:01 GMT

If Pakistan wins the toss, they should bowl first, Pakistan can get wickets of Watson, warner and hussey. Most of the teams batting 2nd are wining the matches. Pakistan can get the aussies out for 140 and can chase easily they did with south africa. Pakistan should bat second and they have to play aggresive cricket. On other hand India will lose to South Africa. Pakistan and Aussie will through to semis.

  • Solid_Snake on October 1, 2012, 18:57 GMT

I could just hope that Pak beat Aussies tomorrow. Knowing the current form of Aussies and the way they are thrashing every team out there ,i could just hope though..Pak beat them in the last T20 series but that series was really close. Our bowlers can stop the 2 W's.Its our batsmen who need to wake up especially Hafeez.Come on man whats wrong with your form. You forgot to bat or cannot handle the pressure. If Hafeez cannot bat as an opener,he should let Nasir play instead of him as an opener.Take any step which could give benefit to the team

  • shaizey on October 1, 2012, 18:56 GMT

Bad selection from pakistan in india match. We should include Abdulrazzaq and Asad shafique in place of Yasir Arafat and Imran Nazir. Openers should be kamran akmal and nasir jamshed and hafeez should instead play at one down. Poor show from imran nazir he can never successed against tough teams as u see in Abu Dhabi against Australia and in WT20 failed against india and south africa. Pakistan need professional players who should never loose their wicket inspite playing fantastically like virat kohali. When imran nazir and shahid afridi plays every opposition knows that in next ball they can send them out of the ground. We dont need sloggers but need player like razzaq, nasir jamshed, umar akmal, kamran akmal. Pakistani fast bwling is also at collapse . Pak should induct new blood in fast bowling like junaid khan presently.

Good luck to Pakistan team, they going to need it. The batting has been woefull to say the least, nazir can be destructive but so predictable whilst not knowing what afridi or k akmal going to do, if anything does not help the cause. The team needs some consistency, and thats where the likes of hafeez, jamshed, u akmal (should be moved up the batting order) and malik need to play well. I hope they give razzaq a chance, aat least he will bat according to the situation, not sure arafat can. Watson and mhussey will be the ones they will have to get out quickly but not sure it will happen if pakistan bat first. Sending afrid up the order will simply mean an easy extra wicket for australia early on, lifting them whilst putting extra pressure on pakistan. They need to keep wickets in hand.

  • sajeel.M on October 1, 2012, 18:18 GMT

Pakistan will win inshallah with a good margin and that will make their place sure in semis even if india win against S. Africa,,,,,, but one change should be done and that is razaq in place of arfat razaq figures in Aus series 2-0-12-0,,,,,,1-0-9-2,,,,,, figures in SLPL 14-0-95-7 at an eco rate of 6.7..which are really good figures.... And everyone is aware what he can do wit bat.... He is a match winner with no doubt..... Most importantly what is saeed ajmal doing,,, his figures in last 3 matches are 12-1-83-2,,,,,I know he is a great bowler but i think if you are not talking wickets for your team, you need to get a grip of yourself..... Another point to be looked for is Umaar Akmal positionin the team he should be sent up the order at kamrans place,,, kamran is a hitter and down the order is an ideal positionfor him,,,,pak bating order and team should be: 1) Hafeez 2) Imran 3) Nasir 4) Umar 5) Malik 6) Kamran 7) Razaq 8) Afridi 9) Gul 10) Ajmal 11) Hassan.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER I HAVE SEEN IN CRICKET HISTORY:

If you want to send Afridi on top of Order,,,, THEN WHY NOT ALLOW HIM TO OPEN THE INNING,s.

And why everyone blaming Afridi for this,,, Where are rest of 10 Player,s???? If Afridi Stay on wicket for 4-6 Overs or for example 2 Overs... I am sure you,ll get better average then other,s

    Bring Abdul-Razzaq in team,

AND PLEASE PLEASE TRY TO BOWL IST RATHER THEN BATTING.

Pakistan Team can chase total easily,

Imran Nazir, & Afridi should opener, then Nasir Jamshed, Kamran Akmal, Hafiz, Shoaib, Umer, Razzaq, Umer Gull, Saeed Ajmal, And Raza Hasan

    and then Australia will nowhere.

I hate my self for saying this but Pakistan's chances for going forward are slim to none at this point.as any other Pakistani fan I will be hoping for a miracle. deck is stacked against us completely. and lets be honest we are solely to blame for it. a perfect combination thru out the tournament and yet genius people decided to send Afridi on top. knowing his 16year background that if he ever performed well " when needed" it was when he was batting after #5.

Here is how i see it. and I hope and pray i am wrong at least partially . 1- Pakistan Bat First score 140 or less and loses. Aus bat first and score 155+ and win 2- Pakistan win but then both INDIA don't play to win but to beat the required score. SA Play for win and beat the required score.

It is going to be the repeat of 1996 World Cup Semi finalists Aus Vs WI, Ind Vs SL.

  • on October 1, 2012, 17:37 GMT

    1. Nasser Jamsheed 2. Kamran Akmal 3. Asad Shafiq 4. Umar Akmal 5. Shahid Afridi 6. Mohammad Hafeez 7. Abdul Razzak 8. Imran Nazir 9. Umar Gul 10. Saeed Ajmal 11.Hassan Raza. This is the best combination for Pakistan. No other team such depth in batting order as does Pakistan, but Pakistan is not using their resources properly. Pakistan need someone at #3 who can stay at the wicket as well as score fluently. This can be done by Asad Shafiq. Nobody with little knowledge of cricket and current form will pick Shoib Malik ahead of Asad Shafiq. I am a huge fan of Imran Nazir, but his confidence is low at this time so he can bat low in the middle order and fire a few boundaries towards the innings if it is required, but there is a need for stability at the top with free scoring. Kamran Akmal is most effective in opening position and at the 6 or 7. He has never been effective in the middle order. You can also consider opening with UMAR AKMAL.

Why on earth Hafeez prefers Arafat over Abdur Razzaq??? Didn't Razzaq helped him win the series against AUS in UAE (remember his over where he took wicket and played in super over with U.Akmal). Why do I feel Hafeez personal likes and dislikes make impact in playing 11 as as well in batting order and bowling changes. Can somebody tell him he is NOT an attacking opener. In T20 you need attacking openers like Ahmed Shahzad, K. Akmal, N, Jamshed. Why does he opens? Can him or anybody else justify it?

  • on October 1, 2012, 17:14 GMT

When such a weak team like India can beat Pakistan easily dont know what Australia can do to Pakistan. Definitely Australia is goin to thrash Pakistan tomorrow. Get ready Pakistan for defeat tomorrow and go home day after tomorrow.

  • on October 1, 2012, 17:12 GMT

WE hope for the good contest between Pak vs Aus ,if they got watson early things can change for them ...

  • on October 1, 2012, 17:02 GMT

Pak still has better chance than India.....Amla and Morkel are certain to limit India to a great extent and even if Pak losses it has better chances but anything can happen....Pak can count of experience of playing aus in UAE and that is where the benefit ends...If they get Watson(forget about Warner, he is always a gonner) than they have just hussey to get, if they do it, I don't think Aussi bowling is good enough to do something great. And watson is bound to fail sooner or later....may be tomorrow will be Pak's day.... I am not supporting Pak but I am sure this world cup is either of Australia or Sri lanka....

  • Big3BOSS on October 1, 2012, 16:53 GMT

For all those permutations and combinations going around, India will probably win against SA (IPL cant afford India to loose) and Australia will win against Pakistan. This will leave Aus with 3 win, India with 2 win, Pakistan with 1. I am a numerology student, doing Phd in numerology and based on bith dates available on espncricinfo for the players of teams this is my prediction based on calculations.I am doing this for experiemntal basis before I become a professional numerologist in a months time, just to see if I can be right in my predictions. Semifinal 1 - India Vs SL and Semifinal 2 - WI vs Aus ....Final to be between India and WI with WI to win a close match or perhaps rained out as per my calculation and joint winners to be declared. Lets see if i am right.

Man if you are talking about history, then its clear that Pakistan loses to India, but still makes to semis. This means that Pakistan and Australia are going into semis: South Africa is going to beat India, Pakistan is going to beat Australia, Goodluck!

  • on October 1, 2012, 16:24 GMT

Pakistan need same aggression in their batting that they show so resiliantly in their bowling. That is the only option they have. If they go in their shell, they won't end up scoring much runs. If they play aggressive and falter, they will also not score much runs however, if they click, we have a chance of posing a decent total or chase down Australia's.

Also, I don't think there is a need for much shuffling in the order. The team need stability in whatever areas they can find. Having said that, captain and coach knows the situation and team best.

Good luck Pakistan. As much as I would like to say the same to Australia, I won't :).

  • mazii on October 1, 2012, 16:07 GMT

Even abdul razzaks inclusion in this pathetic batting team can't resolve Pakistan's woes. There are already many hitters in this batting line up and all of us want Razzak's inclusion. Simple thing is this that Pakistan don't have a single batsmen who can build his innings and can fire at the end. When Pakistani batsmen score some runs then they throw their wickets away. They don't value their wickets. They just know how to hit a six and don't know how to find gaps. Nasir is Pakistan's future and he can do wonders for Pakistan, but he needs proper guidance which in Pakistan no one will give him.In short, even Pakistan wins the next match even then I'm not a fan of Akmal, Afridi, Nazir, Malik and others. Pakistan is unable to produce the players of the caliber of Anwar, Inzi and Yousaf. Don't support Pakistan, otherwise, they will disappoint you. I still hope they win, but............

  • mazii on October 1, 2012, 15:56 GMT

I don't think is going to win this. Unless some miracle happens. And other than Ajmal in this team there is one one miraculous. The way Pakistan played against India, Pakistan deserved not to go into the semis. This team, with only few bowlers in form, will be thrashed by Australia. Australia is dangerous when they are in no pressure. And in tomorrow's game, Australia will be under no pressure, because they have already qualified into the semis. I can't predict the outcome of the next matches, but one thing is sure that if Pakistan couldn't able to get 2 w's early and mike hussey then Australia will score more than 180 runs against Pakistan. On the other hand, Pakistan doesn't have batsmen to get those runs. I want to suggest to fellow Pakistanis for not to cheer for Pakistan, as they always let us down. And this time around they will do the same.

  • Zamana on October 1, 2012, 15:35 GMT

Pakistan needs to play fearlessly. They will win if they play their natural game. They must play to their strenghths. The wicket will assist the spinners. They should attack Watson and Warner with the spinners. Raza has bowled well. The batting needs confidence and fluency. The Australian bowlers have weaknesses that should be exploited.. Pakistan should forget the last game and concentrate on this match. Winning this game may lead them to winning the Championship. Best of luck. They have the potential to win - if they have the desire. Zamana

  • on October 1, 2012, 15:05 GMT

@umaird Pakistan's NRR will be go down if they lose. Ind and SA match becomes a virtual quarterfinal then as winner's NRR is highly likely to be in positives (over +.001) then, which will be obviously higher than PAK's NRR. SO, PAK HAS TO WIN OR THEY ARE OUT.

  • tanveer131 on October 1, 2012, 15:03 GMT

@ScottStevo: I have no doubt that Aus can out class Pakistan easily, but Pakistan bowling is their strength and better than any other team Aus have played. If you see Watson Batting performance in the whole series in UAE Watson clicked only in the last match. Hope pakistan gets his wicket early so pakistan can beat Aus, Otherwise Ground management have to fix the roof:)

  • Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas on October 1, 2012, 14:45 GMT

Right now Pakistan need to erase the memory (of yet another FIASCO against India), reorganize/regroup and "ALL SYSTEMS GO" to derail the "Australian Juggernaut". The professor + think tanks must chalk out the set piece/strategy to engineer/orchestrate the early removal of "THE PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT (RED-HOT Watson)" and get into the Australian middle order. Australian middle order is untested/untried/inexperienced - every chance of crumbling "UNDER COSH" ! Pakistan should take heart from series victory in Emirates and endeavor to gain decisive victory (to avoid perms). Australians have been riding crest of wave so far - early jolts/wickets will find them in an unknown territory ! "IT'S ALL SYSTEMS GO - Pakistan, You have done before" !

Pakistan is an overall ok team when compared to the bouncing Aussies. They're mainly reliant on their spin with Ajmal and Hafeez and Afridi who is not doing his usual "Boom Boom". They are unable to deliver and their batting is terrible. Aussies have Watson, Warner, Hussey, White and in bowling Starc, Cummins and Hogg have really captivated to the situation. Sorry, but Pakistan don't deserve to win and Aussies India Windies and England have put in way more effort than Pakistan and even SA.

how may times hafeez gona trust afridi bating. u got to understand afridi is not a batsman. he is a decent bowler who can bat some times. but getting him at no. 3 against india was blunder. fall of wickets put extra pressure on hafeez himself and also the talented jamshed. and umar akmal should bat at no. 4. he is currently best batsman in pak team having better rank in odi and t20 international. he should bat at no.4. pak team best of luck. i dont think they could able to beat Australia. the way they are playing now they are unbeatable....

  • Rogerunionjack on October 1, 2012, 14:25 GMT

Australia have an untested and weak middle order, if I were to be mean, then I'd say their tail starts from No. 5. We beat them in the warm ups, and they've been successful only because India and the Saffa batsmen had off days. Come on Pakistan, beat them and beat them bad. They're just a bunch of bullies, and when they come up against high quality spin, then we'll see how they react. Best of luck from England.

  • Azhar.Hassan on October 1, 2012, 14:25 GMT

Well the showing by Pakistan against India was very tentative and plain bad. Its not the defeat itself, but the manner in which they lost - a distinct lack of fight. In the earlier match against SA also, they struggled mightily chasing down a smallish total. So the signs were not good even in the victory against SA, let alone in the defeat against India. So, if Pakistan are not willing to change their approach and use the bench players effectively, it seems their struggles (and those of their long suffering fans) will continue!

If Pakistan wins the toss, they should bowl first and don't repeat the biggest blunder of batting first which they committed against India.Australian team is good in chasing so Pakistan must bowl first provided they win the toss. Moreover they should consider the fact that most of the teams batting 2nd have won the matches and Pakistan doesn't have so much strong batting line up to post a score of around 200 to chase so that's why they should bowl first and try their best to restrict Australia below 150 I still cant understand why Pakistani Captain opted to bat first against huge Indian batting line up yesterday!

Pakistan needs to play aggressively. I can't see the batsman playing decently unless they've got a clear goal in their mind after yesterdays game. I think they have to bowl first and then try at first at least to chase the score down in 14.5 overs roughly or whateer it may be to ensure if India win its Australia not Pakistan thats affected. IF they play to win by such a big margin; they'll probably field and contain Australia better and that way even if Nazir and Afridi do fail at the top of the order the game can be reassessed and the score chased down accordingly. And even if they don't quite chase it down in 14.5 overs, winning in 15.3 or something but hitting a six to win will actually improve their run rate more; and so will making Australia bat out their full overs if they collapse and score slowly it seems.

Pakistan must get Aus openers out early. So use your best bowlers upfront. I hope tomorrow is not watsons day. my team would be : (1) Kamran Akmal (2) Nasir Jamshed (3) Hafeez (4) Asad Shafeeq (5) Umar Akmal (6) Shaoib Malik (7) Afridi (8) Razzaq (9) Gul (10) Tanvir(11) Ajmal

  • Aussie_Cricket on October 1, 2012, 13:53 GMT

Pakistan will HAVE to open with Ajmal against Warner. Then go to quicks when Hussey comes in. Once getting through the middle order get Ajmal to clean up the tail. Against Watson??? Insallah Watto just has a brain meltdown.

Aussies tactics should be to cater to Afridi's ego by telling him he's the greatest cricketer ever and a pioneer for his ingenuity with balls and pitches so his head will explode. When batting edge enough deliveries to Kamran for him to drop so the rest of the team just get peeved and let morale take care of the rest.

Besides that i mean Pak 'Can' win but that doesn't mean they will, as a Pakistani i will always support Pak till the end , but ... sigh

Pakistan always plays in similar fashion all the team. Their place is never being assured. Just wait and see.

I thought Pakistan could still qualify if they lose? Provided India lose to SA. Then it's down to run rates

How long will our team management take to keep the batting order the same. when the top order is doing well why the hell we take an out of form batsman to the top and ruin every thing ??????????????????????????????

Hafeez need to rethink about his statergy , he need to be back on bowling attack and chage his batting style if he wana open the innings , want some attacking cricket man , need some attacking mode instead of defensive mode , I hope and pray tht pakistan will give some surprises as they already done with southafrica :)

I would say that mike Hussey's 45 against SA and his 28 against WI constitute more than "brief stays" at the crease, Daniel.

The worrying thing for Pakistan here is that the more that Aus played against them in the last T20 series, the worse the results were for them. And it seems Aus is going from strength to strength.

The best chance for Pakistan would be to have Australia bat first and set a score, as it appears Aus are confident of chasing down any total at the moment.
