Umar Gul and Raza Hasan share a light moment on the eve of the semi-final against Sri Lanka, World Twenty20, Colombo, October 3, 2012

Big Picture

Pakistan didn't know until late on Tuesday night whether they'd have to keep their hotel reservations in Colombo for a few more days. But when South Africa's Robin Peterson gloved a ball for a single to take the score to 122 against India, a roar went around the Premadasa. It sounded as though Sri Lanka were playing, but the noise was from a legion of Pakistan fans who were celebrating their team's progress to the semi-finals on net run rate, at India's expense. There wasn't much separating the two sides, but Pakistan were better placed because they got their tactics right and won big against Australia earlier in the evening.

Spin has been Pakistan's strength in this tournament and their captain Mohammad Hafeez used his resources astutely. If that meant giving a rookie spinner the new ball and making the most experienced fast bowler wait till the 18th over, then so be it. The plan was to suffocate the Australians with turn on a sluggish pitch and it worked to such an extent that even Shane Watson had a rare, bad outing. The fielders made Australia's qualifying target of 112 seem distant. As a result, Pakistan play their fourth World Twenty20 semi-final tomorrow, but unlike on Tuesday, they will not have the lion's share of the support.

Sri Lanka are familiar opponents for Pakistan. The hosts were the more dominant side when Pakistan visited in June-July. Sri Lanka looked a more settled side in the Super Eights, making heavy weather of the chase against New Zealand (which culminated in a Super Over victory) and trouncing West Indies and England. The return of Ajantha Mendis has given their spin attack more bite and the seamers, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara don't offer respite.

It's ironic though that the semi-final is Sri Lanka's first game in Colombo during this World Twenty20. They love playing at the Premadasa and the pitch - not as quick as the ones Pakistan played on in June - should suit their spinners. Sri Lanka haven't had a world title since 1996. They are two games away from breaking the drought, at home.

Watch out for

Spin v spin: Opening with spin has become the norm for Pakistan. Will Hafeez adopt the same tactic against Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene, who are fluent players of slow bowling? Hafeez, Hasan and Saeed Ajmal conceded only 53 in 12 overs and took all seven wickets that fell against Australia. The two Mendises - Ajantha and Jeevan - have played vital roles for Sri Lanka as well, and they also possess a largely unknown quantity in Akila Dananjaya.

Something's got to give for Shahid Afridi. He has looked a shadow of his old self with the ball, while as a batsman he remains unreliable. His three wickets in the tournament are at odds with his reputation for running through line-ups. Afridi still gets the odd delivery to grip and beat the bat, but Pakistan need more from him. His star value may not have diminished, but his wicket-taking and match-winning ability has.

Team news

Mohammad Hafeez didn't drop any hints of team changes. Pakistan wouldn't want to disturb their winning combination.

Pakistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Shahid Afridi, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Raza Hasan.

Mahela Jayawardene stopped short of saying he would captain again after Sri Lanka's smart play-safe approach against England. He didn't hint at team changes either.

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Jeevan Mendis, 6 Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Akila Dananjaya, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Stats and trivia

  • Sri Lanka have lost all four Twenty20 matches they've played at the Premadasa.

  • Of the 11 matches at the Premadasa in this tournament, only one has been won by the team winning the toss - by Australia against South Africa.

"We may not have won too many finals but getting there itself shows that we have played consistent cricket."
Mahela Jayawardene

"T20 is all about giving surprises every time you play. We are trying to do that, and most of the time, we are getting some success in that. I have no idea what it will be [tomorrow], but you never know."
Mohammad Hafeez.

I sense Professor wears a bit confused look -- probably he is mentally in a much-hyped and pressured stat of mind ... Guess if he makes a mess of things with this much visible pressure in his eyes and facial features at the start of an important match.

All The Best Team Sri Lanka

Just Rock And I Wish U Will Get to Finals :)

Veryyyyyyyyyyyyy strange about Razzaq he must be in today...what they did???????????sohail nothing pak need batting not bowling

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 13:12 GMT)

Great and young talent Raza Hasan will be the most unexpected success guy for Pakistani team , best of luck Pakistan.....

Posted by Glorizee on (October 4, 2012, 13:11 GMT)

It is tragedy and very illogical to make out why Mr Hafiz has dropped Razzaq and guess what he picks Sohail Tanvi who will cost the match while Razzaq could have won it for Pakistan. This is the worst elimination in the tournament that one can imagine as a nightmare. Oh ... I tell you Sohail Tanvir is going to be bigger part in todays Pak loss and what a shameful decision .. Mr Hafiz can you ever .. ever justify this nonsense move of eliminating Adbur Razzaq.

Posted by Night_Fury on (October 4, 2012, 12:59 GMT)

to be honest srilanka dont deserve to be in semi finals. I think Pakistan will trounce Srilanka. I am an India fan but i like flare in Pakistan team. They should win easily if they dont implode. Srilanka will loose and there captains will again say that they need to get to drawing board and blah blah blah :)

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:59 GMT)

Pakistan inshallah win the semi final & final

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:59 GMT)

Good Luck Pakistan <3 Please win the cup :P

Posted by cric_roch on (October 4, 2012, 12:57 GMT)

Both your teams are good.It will be close match to predict. But SL slightly ahead because of their fielding and home advantage. Few jealousy folks from SL and PAK dragging IN into the discussion. India lost so badly against AUS,, so they are out. You guys have to go much much further achieve a percentage of India. In last 5 years we won ODI world cup, t20 world cup , and top raked in test for 2 years. Compare yourself before you comment.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:56 GMT)

For Pakistan, if Afridi is included today, then it is a cakewalk for SL.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:55 GMT)

Good Luck Green Shirts... <3

Pressure will be on Sri Lanka, Pakistan have definate advantage.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:43 GMT)

The difference between the two teams is minimal. Whoever holds nerves will win. The match will probably be competitive. Good luck to Slinga Lanka and Boom Pakistan. Whoever wins tonight will probably go on to lift the Cup.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:42 GMT)

Best Of Luck Pakistan in my opinion "Dilshan" and "Mahila" will be suffer today pressure match and Paki Bowler will create the problem for both batsmen

any way

Pressure match and big match

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:26 GMT)

In terms of batting, Sri Lanka has the edge. When it comes to bowling, equally matched teams they are. So who ever bats good, wins. Just saw the women's match earlier. Pitch is really turning! Batting will be hard on this pitch. May the best team win! (All the best Pakistan!!!).

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:26 GMT)

Srilanka has no chance against Pakistan if they bat first the score will not be more than 130 and if they bat second they will fall 20 to 30 runs short. Pakistan will reach to the final and they will surely win it.

Posted by maddy20 on (October 4, 2012, 12:22 GMT)

None of the group B teams are gonna beat any of the group A teams. Pakistan and Australia will stroll to victory against the group B minnows, SL and WI!

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 12:21 GMT)

Sri Lanka has an edge as they are hosting the tournament. The crowd is a factor.

If Ajantha Mendis happens to fire today against Pakistan, he could re-write the path for the rest of his career. At present he's been written off against Pakistan and India (and ODIs and Tests) even though he's only played 16 Tests. A big performance... even a moderately good performance and cricket world could be his oyster.

Posted by PakEditor on (October 4, 2012, 11:44 GMT)

Like to extend the best to both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The best of the tournament starts now!

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 11:41 GMT)

good day to everyone, its quet obvious you can justify by these comments how much pakistan people love srilanka and srilankan people love pakistan, its nice to see each other well wishes for both teams

if it were indian fans guess what would they write what we call this mentality of people

Posted by oops292 on (October 4, 2012, 11:37 GMT)

@ Anushka Sachith AbagNale : That is what Russel Arnold said during an ODI match bw pak and sri "I don't think prayers will help this time "and the whole world say how Pak bounced back and took that match away from SRI . Go Lala Go .

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 11:37 GMT)

My money is on Sri Lanka. If they beat Pakistan Australia Sri Lanka final is the one I like to watch.

Imran Nazir should be out from the team and young Asad Shafiq should be in team

Posted by Avidcricketlover on (October 4, 2012, 11:16 GMT)

Might impressed with Raza hasan. This lad has potential. Don't slip him down the drain Pakistan. He was more calm and composed than even Saeed Ajmal. That's a trait that is extremely when it combined with the talent he has. He could be a great ODI and T20 spinner. He was better than Afridi by miles !! Afridi looks lost, seems he forgot what to bowl when !!

Posted by vishnu1503 on (October 4, 2012, 11:12 GMT)

think it is safe to say that this is one of the poorest formats I have seen in an international cricket tournament . Usually T20 is a format where you see some good surprise performance and some of the "minnows" pull off great wins, but this T20 WC has been predictable and disappointing. To be honest it was only net run rate that decided which team went through to the Semi's. T20 is a format of cricket which is supposed to be exciting and is supposed to result in close finishes, how can you judge performance on NRR in such a format, the premise of NRR is big wins for some teams and not so big wins for other teams, however this cannot be the deciding factor in a T20 tournament, a win is a win and a loss is a loss, the margin does not and should not matter. as can be seen below very little separates the 8 teams, it is only NRR: SL PAK AUS WI IND ENG SA NZ Win 4 4 4 2 4 2 2 1 Loss 1 1 1 2 1 3 3 4 NR 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0

Posted by ajeeshferdin10 on (October 4, 2012, 11:11 GMT)

srilanka one of the hopeless team when it comes to knockouts so PAKISTAN will treash sl like anything band will keep sl fans mouth numb come on PAK...insallah PAKISTANI...

its going to be SriLanka.... they can only stop loaded WI...

Posted by timathews on (October 4, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

I think Pakistan will win this one but the WI will lift the Cup...!!!!

Posted by sanath1234 on (October 4, 2012, 11:02 GMT)

no matter Afridi hit same day years ago,no matter SL won wc years ago... that is history...its up to best players to win. both teams got mastery spinners and well formed batsmen. Malinga will be a fact today as Pakistanis never faced him recently as Indians at IPL. and Malinga seems to be find his way of attack again. and Raza will be a threat to SL openers.Dananjaya will show what he got. may be RP stadium t20 history on SL team could change tonight.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 10:57 GMT)

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 10:57 GMT)

well...i think that this is the toughest challenge yet for the Pakistan team coz of the single reason that the siri lankans play ...and i feel today is afridi's day...just get a feeling.....all the best to both teams....may the best team win

Posted by Criktic on (October 4, 2012, 10:56 GMT)

@Aziz Rehmann That was one of the very very few times Afridi has performed with the bat. Its unfortunate that he has not grown as a batsman even after all these years. He is never ready to bear the responsibility, no matter what the situation he just starts to hit every ball. He should play for the country, not for his own sake. (sigh)

Posted by AHKA on (October 4, 2012, 10:54 GMT)

Hi Every one, I just want to tell that people who talking about Abdul Razzaq, they are all talking rubbish coz just see the match strike rate from all players except Afridi that he faced only 2 balls four runs Razzaq is the best strike rate. he is true match winner lonely and you people will see his performance in this match inshallah when he wins the match alone. he is true and genuine all rounder in pakistan team, you can't call hafeez or afridi coz they both look like bowling allrounders, hope every one is respect Razzaq and his talent and ability as he is fantastic legend of the cricket game. thanking you

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 10:50 GMT)

I don't think prayers will help this time. this time for SriLanka....GO lions

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 10:44 GMT)

If Sri Lanka play the same way they played against india in ODI WC Final then pakistan for sure will win. Becoz i think that was gifted by Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lank to Indian for IPL. IPL would have been a disastrus failure had india lost the WC2011. Pakistan by droping 5 catches and playing as Test match when after scoring 120. Australia by droping steve smith and playing white and Sri Lanka by 5 changes and bringing Murali after 25 overs.

sri lanka would win the match quite comfortably if pakistan bat 1st but on other hand if srilankan batsman put a great fight with the bat against pakistani spin mystery then it will be over for pak. not to stay long in sri lanka and come home without trophy........but let wait and see who is the real champ...

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 10:12 GMT)

both teams are good l but i think pakistan has little advantage against Srilanka. there is 70-30 ratio.

if pakistan batting click today then will impossible for srilanka. Afridi from pakistan and kulusakra from Srilanka.

being a Pakistani my wishes with Pakistan. Best Of luck Pak Pak Pakistan

Pakistan has a edge on SL by winning last match with great performance

Posted by Breezedubai on (October 4, 2012, 9:54 GMT)

Today Sri Lanka will win and i expect Pakistan to surrender without any fight... That's what happening in the previous years and i hope that to be repeated as usual. The local Pakistan media will become furious after their lose in Semi Final and some of the old cricketers will pass the comments about the weakness of Pakistan. What i believe that the most talented cricket players of Pakistan are wasted? I don't know? Some thing is missing seriously....

Posted by bravetigersmustwin on (October 4, 2012, 9:44 GMT)

Congratulations Pakistan team and all the best for your finals(Pak gonna beat Srilanka anyways). Although im indian fan i still support pakistan in this match because truely they deserve to be in finals than srilanka. To me Pak is eney but still i respect them more than sri lanka because of their brave fight on the fields. They beat all the best teams and qualified for semi finals. But Sri Lanka are really lucky to be in semi finals. Definitely Pak is going to crush Srilanka.

@Rajiv Dutta Pakistan reaches semis by luck.... are you serious? Australia lost by 31 runs by hands of Pakistan …… the only team they couldn't defeat, Pak won 4 out of 5 in this tournament, even in ranking Pakistan stand 3rd ……. Kind of bowling attack they have is luck maybe? Or is that how you release you frustration ……. :-)

I am a huge Pakistan fan and am obviously supporting my team - but I really hope both teams play a great match today. And whichever team wins I hope goes on to lift the trophy. Sri Lanka is one of the few teams that have stood by Pakistan through thick and thin - we recognize your support and greatly appreciate it!

Best of Luck to both teams!

srilanka's bowling makes a tough game 4 pakistan players to devolop a gud score.dey r focusing a start break to pakisthan's batting.if pakistan can get a gud starting den it will be an easy game 4 pakisthan.but, srilanka is having aggresive bowlers as well batsmen..ajmal,-hafeez-raza-afridi ..n seemers shud be aggresive 2 case of batting pakistan shud be strong enough to make a gud of lucK ,,

I can watch this contest in peace. No worries whose gonna win, just want to see a good cricket game. Pakistan or Srilanka lifting the cup isnt much of a difference. Infact the Lankans deserve to win this one, 2012 has been a great year for Srilankan cricket and this T20 may just be the feather in the cap that they would need.

whether Pak win or loose time to say good bye to some old folks and time to bring new comers atleast in T20 and one day....Pak is winning but only 5/12 are really contributing.

PAKISTAN will win not only semi final but also final match against West Indies INSHAHALLAH.

Posted by Dam_Nava on (October 4, 2012, 7:57 GMT)

What we need to see is some exciting cricket from these two Asian giants. It was sad to see India went home early. For that India shouldn't blame their players. They should blame their own CASH RICH BCCI ... who tries to dominate even the ICC. Play too much T20 tournaments (e.g. apart from IPL now there is one more T20 Champions League). Furthermore this helps not to improve cricket this will destroy other formats of the game. Also this will be a huge headache for other countries cricking boards or authorities. I love T20's for entertainment but l think real cricket lover must know the importance of Test Cricket of fighting out for 5 days to achieve the real results. All the Best Sri Lanka (Because I am a Sri Lankan) and good luck to Pakistan too.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 7:55 GMT)

Pakistan needs to bat well to win this match...

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 7:49 GMT)

Pakistan main strength is spinners, & Srilankan players can play spinner very well, Pakistan fielding is also very poor..... I think Srilanka are more favourite than Pakistan.... But I pray for Pakistan, INSHALLAH Pakistan will win this match....

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 7:31 GMT)

Afridi admits that he is not a bating allrounder, he is a bowling allrounder. And as a bowler team needs him. His bating is just a bonus if he delivers. There could be a tough decision either to select Razzaq or Shafiq depends on if they want a punch hiter at the death overs or want to give some more strength to the middle order. it would be ok both ways because u cannot ignore Razzaq either. Both teams have 50 fifty chances. Best of luck team Pakistan.

india not in sf disappointing.but happy to see pak in sf.they trully deserve that.but india also played very well.won 4 matchs out of 5.beating teams like pak-semi flnalist,SA no 1 ranked team, eng defending champs. all out oposite team 4 times with weak bolling.they out of sf due to NRR not by poits this is happen due to mistake of team managment & supporting staff.agaist pak they would be give massage to virat-yuvi to finish early in 15-16 ovs.they very well capable of that.also hard luck to indians that rain against aus match.bcoz spiner not grip.the ball due wet ball.otherwise that defeat was not so big.again last match Sa won toss and ball first.ifindia chasing the score that day india definately chase that within giving hobart against sl.also india top in his group gave eng most heavy defeats they ever have.

Don't worry! Srilanka will win.. But, SL always looses final????

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 7:04 GMT)

COME ON LIONS!!!! ALL THE WAY!! We will win this and strive our best to win the tournament. Pakistan have a good line up but there mian bowling strength in the tournament, spin, will not work on us. Same in Sri Lanka's case but we have the SLINGA MALINGA and Kulasekara. Bad choice to ball spin to us at the beginiing anyways like you did to the aussies coz you saw what happened to nz when nathan mccullum bowled. ALL THE BEST LIONS!!!!

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 7:02 GMT)

SL though look more settled side at the moment but Pakistan can surprise every now and then. Pak need to replace A Razzak as he is slow in the field, doesn't bowl and produces a lot of dots while he bats. Inclusion of a seamer at the cost of Razzak is not a bad idea. Tanvir though looked out of color but he may prove useful with new ball and may get a chance. Nazir we never know what he is upto, Hafeez would play him but i get a felling that opening with Kamran and replacing Nazir with Asad in teh middle order is not a bad option at all. Sl is top heavy like Aussies so getting early wickets would be the key.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 7:00 GMT)

On paper, this is a Cracking Game. Hope the contest lives up to the hype. Even though Sri Lanka are playing some beautiful cricket atm, we often blow it up against sub-continent opposition. Hope we make it this time around. It's fascinating to see a pure cricketers like Mahela n Sanga are so succesful among the modern bashers. Good Luck Lions

Go green army go.. you played very well guys... best of luck. I hope pakistan's batting clicks today.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 6:48 GMT)

Didn't quite like this preview for a semi-final. The first two paragraphs mainly say how Pakistan got a semi-final berth and how they used spin vs Australia. Compared to that, barely a few lines on SL. They are also the finalists of the 2009 World T20, they have a history there.

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 6:46 GMT)

All the Best Srilanka, and Pakistan

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 6:34 GMT)

Today, again this is an excellent opportunity for the Pakistani players to demonstrate their massive skill, team spirit and capability how to turn the Victory. Effectively, you need to Bow down and focussed toward the objective. Don't take a pressure of a big match, only forefront with sense of responsibility and aim the target. Certainly, you will be in a final.

We as a strong nation are praying for your success at utmost level. Best of luck with today match.....

Posted by doosra_inventer on (October 4, 2012, 6:24 GMT)

As long as Pak Spins well and fielder do their part i think there's nothing much to worry about then....i Hope we will go through today

Posted by fan_of_good_cricket on (October 4, 2012, 6:21 GMT)

Playing Abdul Razzaq would be a disaster. He wasted too many balls in the death overs against Australia. Playing 3 dot balls to hit a boundary is not what is needed in T20. He is not required to ball either and is slow in field. Can we not include a 'proper' batsman in place of him (Asad Shafiq?) I am puzzled about Afridi though and I am sure team management would be as puzzled. Lets see what decision comes out for him! I think that would be good either way!!!

Posted by   on (October 4, 2012, 6:21 GMT)

Pakistan has got excellent bowling attack, i hope they bat good. Best of luck to Sri Lanka they played brilliantly throughout the tournament.

Pakistan qualified because they played better then India, beat Australia by a big margin, had a close win with SA, just like India has a touch-closer-win against SA, but were thrashed by Australia in just 14 overs. Anyhow!

I hope the best team wins! Cheers!

common srilanka u have to win it ....... mahela love u,,, u r my favorite .......

Posted by satish619chandar on (October 4, 2012, 6:14 GMT)

Bowling is almost even. Raza though doesn't look classy is very effective bowler with the new ball and is giving a great support to the captain. And, Gul in the last overs is a revelation. Giving nothing to score off. SL has a great outfit too. Malinga is usually effective against Pakistan. With enoumous options available to take the pace off the ball, they have a formidable bowling attack. On paper SL batting leads Pakistan by some distance. Two very good teams at it where Pakistan will start as underdogs as usual but you never know which Pakistan team will turn up. Though SL will be very challenging, if Pakistan's batting holds up decently, they might do the job.

16 years ago on 4th October 1996, Star All-Rounder Shahid Khan Afridi scored fastest ODI 100 in 37 balls with 11 6s and 6 4s.

Today, again, SK Afridi is up against Sri Lanka again. Will he be able to celebrate the anniversary in the same fashion? INSHAALLAH We, Green Shirts, The Die Hard Cricket Lovers, ♥ BOom BOom Afridi. We Are With U with our ♥s.... Praying for your BIG return Performance with VICTORY. May Allah Pak Bless us all. AMEEN

best of luck to our lions....

Malinga is difference between the two teams.Lets see what strategy Pakistan will adopt to counter his attack. Sangakara always perform well against Pakistan. In last tour of Pakistan to Srilanka he performed admirably in all forms of cricket. He scored almost 450 runs but Pakistan can surprise them.

Posted by sunnyid on (October 4, 2012, 6:01 GMT)

It's a 50-50 contest - On paper both teams are good with Srilanka's batting being a touch better where as in the bowling department Pakistan have the advantage... If Pakistan can get Srilankas top three then they ll have a great chance of restricting Srilnaka to a low score... Also need to consider Pakistan will rely on their spin as their first bowlers have been below par and Srilankans are good players of Spin.... it ll all depend who performs on the day !!! Hope we get a good game of cricket

Posted by PadMarley on (October 4, 2012, 5:51 GMT)

Sri Lanka may have to replace one left hander with a right hander... Pakistan has too many off spinners... Dinesh Chandimal coming in?

I'm afraid....I'm not looking Pakistan in final :(....I really pray from my heart it wont happen...
