ICC World Twenty20 - 1st match, Group C
Sri Lanka won by 82 runs

Zimbabwe's batsmen stride out, we are all set for the chase. Anyone thinks Zimbabwe can pull this off?

0.1

Kulasekara to Masakadza, 1 leg bye, Nuwan Kulasekara gets that trademark indip towards the batsman, that struck him on the pad and rolled towards square leg, was going to miss leg comfortably, so no big lbw appeal

0.2

Kulasekara to Sibanda, no run, gets forward and defends this full delivery

0.3

Kulasekara to Sibanda, no run, loud appeal for lbw, Rod tucker shakes his head, Sibanda was looking to swipe that to the leg side, that one swung in, pitched on a length and then snaked in further, on the pad, but again looked like it was heading down

0.4

Kulasekara to Sibanda, 1 wide, the big movement sends the ball down the leg side

0.4

Kulasekara to Sibanda, 1 run, moving across and looking to whip it to the leg side, the ball rolls towards backward square leg

0.5

Kulasekara to Masakadza, no run, goes wide outside off this time, back of a length ball, this doesn't jag back, batsman throws his bat at it, looking to carve through cover, misses

0.6

Kulasekara to Masakadza, no run, back to the indipper, looking to work it to the leg side, can't get enough ball on it, the ball dribbles towards midwicket

Mike has dug this up: "Interesting to see what Jeevan Mendis did to Zim in the U19 World Cup in 2001-2."

End of over 1 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 3/0 (180 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 3.00, RRR: 9.47)

Lasith Malinga is on

1.2

Malinga to Sibanda, 1 run, slower ball, short of a length, played with soft hands, gets a single behind square

1.3

Malinga to Masakadza, no run, nearly unplayable. Short of a length, on off, moving away, beats the bat, and Sanga collects it overhead

1.4

Malinga to Masakadza, 4 leg byes, short, into the ribs, didn't look to me he was playing a shot, but he has been allowed four leg byes off the hip. It's a batsman's game

1.6

Malinga continues

3.1

Malinga to Masakadza, FOUR, no respect for Lasith as he charges down the wicket and lofts this shortish delivery over midwicket. Malinga made the adjustment as he left the crease, but Masakadza compenstaed brilliantly with a short-arm jab

3.2

Malinga to Masakadza, 1 run, slower ball, middle and off, pushed to midwicket for one

3.3

Ajanatha Mendis, back to international cricket after a long time, to bowl now. One of the best T20 bowlers around

5.1

BAW Mendis to Masakadza, no run, full, on off, pushed back to him

5.2

BAW Mendis to Masakadza, 1 run, Masakadza backs away, Mendis follows him with a ball that doesn't turn either way. Sibanda gets a single to mid-off

5.3

BAW Mendis to Sibanda, OUT, and it takes Mendis three balls to strike. And this is his favourite way of striking. Length ball, on middle, Sibanda plays for the angle, the ball holds its line enough to beat him, and strike the middle stump. Welcome back, Ajantha

V Sibanda b BAW Mendis 11 (23m 16b 1x4 0x6) SR: 68.75

Brendan Taylor is the new man in..

5.4

BAW Mendis to Taylor, OUT, and he is done in by the carrom ball first ball. On a length, on off, Taylor plays for a straightish delivery, and the turns goes past him. Sanga is pretty sure he has got him stumped. Replays show Taylor has lifted the foot during the exact second that Sanga flicks the bails off. That's gone for mine, but he might just get the benefit of the doubt as he lifted the bat only for a brief second. Thankfully the bowler prevails

BRM Taylor st †Sangakkara b BAW Mendis 0 (3m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Mendis is on a hat-trick already, and he has spent more than eight months out of this team. Elton Chigumbura to face the music here

5.5

BAW Mendis to Chigumbura, no run, carrom ball, short of a length, outside off, and Chigumbura goes back to defend and avoid the hat-trick

7.1

BAW Mendis to Masakadza, no run, looks to sweep, premeditates, but gets himself out of the line. Doesn't get any bat on it

7.2

BAW Mendis to Masakadza, OUT, googly there. This is not an offbreak, mind you. this is bowled from the back of the hand. Masakadza thinks he has picked a carrom ball, and plays for the turn away. The ball, however, comes back in from outside off, and bursts through the gate. Mr Mendis, we have been expecting you

H Masakadza b BAW Mendis 20 (36m 23b 3x4 0x6) SR: 86.95

Craig Ervine is the new man in

7.3

BAW Mendis to Ervine, no run, huge, huge, never-ending appeal for lbw. Full ball, beats his premeditated sweep, hits him in front of off, and might have just missed the off stump as it went straight with the angle. 7.4

BAW Mendis to Ervine, no run, well forward to defend this full ball

7.5

8.4

Mathews to Ervine, no run, bouncer, over the stumps, ducks under it

8.5

Mathews to Ervine, 1 run, short of a length, on off, punched to deep point for one

8.6

Mathews to Chigumbura, 1 leg bye, half a shout for lbw as this one cuts back in, but the height has saved him

10.2

BMAJ Mendis to Ervine, no run, flighted on off, defended back to him

10.3

BMAJ Mendis to Ervine, OUT, googly, doesn't read it, makes room to drive, misses by a mile, and he has overbalanced. Sanga stumps him, and doesn't even feel the need to appeal. That's all we have from the opening night of the World Twenty20 of 2012. Hope you enjoyed the coverage. Do log in to read more about this game and previews for tomorrow's games on the site. Cheers

"It is a tough pill to swallow," says Brendan Taylor. "We are a far better side than what we showed. Credit goes to Sri Lanka. They showed why they are one of the favourites to win the tournament. We have played enough cricket to go back from today, rethink and come back a better side."

"It's tough paying a team like Zimbabwe," says Mahela Jayawardene. "You can't take anything to granted. We had to make sure we played to our potential. It's a pretty good wicket, just needed to get used to it a little bit. Our guys batted really well, and the bowlers then did a super job."

Mahela is going to interpret for Ajantha Mendis, who is the Man of the Match, but he says he doesn't need any interpreting, and says: "I am really happy today. Playing cricket after nine months, I am really happy with my performance, and I will try my best in the coming matches."

There are fireworks all over Hambantota as Sri Lanka get off to an emphatic start in their home WorldT20, and also surely progress to the Super Eights? Sri Lanka were not extravagant against an ill-disciplined Zimbabwe in the field, and efficiently reached 182. Extravagance and flamboyance was then to be unleashed through the spin of Mendises. Ajantha was sensational on his return with figures of 4-2-8-6, and Jeevan chipped in with three. Zimbabwe, well they couldn't read them at all. Don't go away too far, we will have the presentation soon enough
