ICC World Twenty20 - 5th match, Group D

Bangladesh v New Zealand

New Zealand won by 59 runs

The national anthems are done with, and the game can begin. The Bangladesh team is huddling in the outfield. James Franklin and Martin Guptill are New Zealand's openers. Guptill to face.

Mashrafe Mortaza loosening up before the first over, he's bowling from over the wicket. One wide slip in place.

3.20 pm Abhishek Purohit informs me that those men standing on guard with covers in the event of rain have now left the field.

Dera: "I'm surprised why everyone's underestimating the black caps, they have always done well at international stage in big tournaments, specially considering that it's a country with just over 4.5 million people...would have been handy had they had Jesse Ryder, but still they are definitely the favourites today ..."

Kapil: "Not picking Milne is a mistake.. Bangladesh struggle against serious pace, not against slow medium pace of Mills..."

Adnan: "For people thinking this could be a close one : Does anybody remember the Bangaldesh-West Indies game in the 2011 world cup. Bangladesh going in as favourites in home conditions and succumbing to pressure."

3.15 pm So this is the World Twenty20's group of death, if you like, with Pakistan being the other team. Today's winner will have taken a massive step towards Super Eight qualification. I wouldn't say either team is favourite to win today, it's pretty even. If Bangladesh's spinners get something from this pitch, they'll be a handful.

And the emails have begin, Joshwin weighs in: "Expecting the first "shock" of the tournament, New Zealand will rely heavily on Brendon Mccullum and Ross Taylor. I don't see NZ posting more than 130 which will be easy pickings for Bangladesh."

James: "This feels like it's the most likely "upset" match. Bangladesh are in quasi-home conditions, and NZ are not in great form. If Pakistan play to their potential (big IF, I accept) this could be a straight shoot out for the super 8's. Just hope the rain doesn't interfere."

Toss, 3.00 pm The captains walk out to toss with the groundstaff on standby with the covers. Mushfiqur has won the toss and Bangladesh will bowl. I expect he wants to bowl when it's dry. There's the odd spit of rain at the moment as Ross Taylor says he wanted to bowl as well.

New Zealand are not playing Adam Milne, Doug Bracewell, Ronnie Hira and BJ Watling. Bangladesh have left out Farhad Reza, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam and Abul Hasan.

2.50 pm Abhishek Purohit, our reporter in Pallekele, brings less-than-ideal news. Covers are being brought on as a precautionary measure. No rain yet.

New Zealand had several fitness issues leading into the game, we'll know soon enough who's left the sick-bay and who hasn't. Toss in ten minutes, weather permitting.

The shortest boundary in Pallekele is 60 metres and the longest is 79, which is sizeable. Wasim Akram, on television, expects the pitch to spin later in the match.

2.45 pm Good afternoon and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the first game in Group D, between Bangladesh and New Zealand in Pallekele. Mohammad Isam's previewed the game and he'll be writing the report for it as well.

The weather in Pallekele is a bit of a concern, there's no rain at present but there are clouds around. And I've just read that left-hand allrounder James Franklin might open for New Zealand, in their bid to deal with Bangladesh's supply of left-arm spinners.

Abdur Razzak to BB McCullum, OUT, he's been caught off the final ball, throwing his bat at a wide ball and slicing it to the fielder running in from the cover boundary. BB McCullum c Tamim Iqbal b Abdur Razzak 123 (72m 58b 11x4 7x6) SR: 212.06

5.00 pm McCullum: Very pleased to make a contribution, we've got a very good score. The partnership with James Franklin set us up. On some days it comes off and on some it doesn't not ... They have very good bowlers, played very well against us in Dhaka, our boys have worked hard to play left-arm spin in anticipation for this, and it was nice to put such a total on the board.

Bangladesh have about 15 minutes to gather themselves and attempt to chase this mammoth total. Will Shakib's day get better? Alex Winter will bring you the chase.
