ICC World Twenty20 - 7th match, Group C

Sri Lanka v South Africa

South Africa won by 32 runs

Not too long a wait then before the Sri Lankan openers are coming out to chase 79 to win, well, a meaningless game, but they would be the winners of the inaugural meeting between these teams...Morne Morkel to open the bowling...

0.1

M Morkel to Jayawardene, no run, length ball around middle and leg, tried to be swung to leg, missed completely, a shout for lbw but maybe too high, maybe, but it looked close I thought, not out given

0.2

M Morkel to Jayawardene, no run, length outside off, a step to leg and a swing and a miss

That lbw was out according to Hawk Eye...

0.3

M Morkel to Jayawardene, FOUR, length ball, lifted up and over the covers for a couple of bounces into the rope, had to delay the shot a little cause it didn't come onto the bat as he would have liked, gets four though

0.4

M Morkel to Jayawardene, OUT, slapped straight to extra cover, Dilshan is slow to come through, in comes the throw, de Villiers take it on the run and dives at the stumps and gets there in time what a play from de Villiers! That was baseball style, taking the ball and getting back to break the stumps, super work

TM Dilshan run out 0 (5m 0b 0x4 0x6) SR: -

0.5

M Morkel to Munaweera, no run, swing and a miss outside off stump

0.6

M Morkel to Munaweera, 1 run, back of a length, guided past slip but a sliding stop from Botha at third man saves four

End of over 1 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 5/1 (74 runs required from 36 balls, RR: 5.00, RRR: 12.33)
EMDY Munaweera    1* (2b)      M Morkel    1-0-5-0
DPMD Jayawardene    4* (4b 1x4)

Dale Steyn now...

1.1

Steyn to Munaweera, 2 runs, leg stump and full, flicked wide of deep square leg, they take two as the fielder comes around

1.2

Steyn to Munaweera, no run, off stump on a good length, it zips away and beats the batsman who was looking to play to leg and got totally done by pace and movement

1.3

Steyn to Munaweera, no run, movement away from the bat again, a flick off the back foot misses

1.4

Steyn to Munaweera, 1 run, full on middle stump, pushed into the covers

1.5

Steyn to Jayawardene, no run, swing and miss outside off, another good length ball swinging away

1.6

Steyn to Jayawardene, OUT, leg stump and flicked straight to deep square leg, seemed to pick it up quite nicely but picked out the fielder with perfection, he didn't have to move a few yards in off the rope and took it hands inverted at shoulder height, a solid take

DPMD Jayawardene c Behardien b Steyn 4 (12m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

End of over 2 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 8/2 (71 runs required from 30 balls, RR: 4.00, RRR: 14.20)
     DW Steyn    1-0-3-1
EMDY Munaweera    4* (6b)      M Morkel    1-0-5-0

May as well go home now...

2.1

M Morkel to Sangakkara, 1 run, outside off hammered to deep cover, now South Africa have their sweepers in off these big boundaries so this is just one, whereas Sri Lanka allowed two every time out to the square boundaries

2.2

M Morkel to Munaweera, 1 run, flicked into the deep, again just a single, same fielder now at deep square leg

2.3

M Morkel to Sangakkara, 1 leg bye, length ball around leg stump, off the pad towards the off side, again just a single

2.4

M Morkel to Munaweera, no run, swing and a miss just outside the off stump, there was a noise, obviously not bat

2.5

M Morkel to Munaweera, 1 run, another good delivery, angled in and it's forced into the leg side

2.6

M Morkel to Sangakkara, 1 run, wild swing from outside off, up in the air and dropped by du Plessis going back from point, tough chance, he got there but couldn't hang on

End of over 3 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 13/2 (66 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 4.33, RRR: 16.50)
KC Sangakkara    2* (3b)      M Morkel    2-0-9-0
EMDY Munaweera    6* (9b)      DW Steyn    1-0-3-1

Johan Botha into the attack...just a formality now, no way Sri Lanka can get 66 in just 24 balls from here...

3.1

Botha to Sangakkara, no run, leg stump, went to swing it away, comes off the pad and runs back to the bowler

3.2

Botha to Sangakkara, 1 run, step to leg, swung into the off side, bounces just in front of the sweeper coming in

3.3

Botha to Munaweera, 1 run, full around off stump, hammered back to the bowler, fielded just about but they get a single

3.4

Botha to Sangakkara, FOUR, gives himself a little room and times a full ball off middle stump wide of long off, super shot, timing and placement ideal

3.5

Botha to Sangakkara, 2 runs, slower ball, waited for and slugged down to long on on the back foot, they get two as long on moves to his left

3.6

Botha to Sangakkara, 1 run, step to leg, Botha follows him, dug out to deep midwicket

End of over 4 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 22/2 (57 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 5.50, RRR: 19.00)
KC Sangakkara    10* (8b 1x4)      J Botha    1-0-9-0
EMDY Munaweera    7* (10b)      M Morkel    2-0-9-0

Meanwhile down in Colombo, West Indies have won the toss and decided to bowl against Australia, that game coming up straight after this...Jacques Kallis to bat now...

4.1

Kallis to Sangakkara, 2 runs, back of a length ball just outside off, smashed straight up in the air but spilled by Albie Morkel at midwicket, it went a long way up but should have been taken

4.2

Kallis to Sangakkara, 1 run, fuller, worked to leg

4.3

Kallis to Munaweera, FOUR, short again, pulled again, bit of a top edge over short long leg down to the boundary on a couple of bounces

4.4

Kallis to Munaweera, 1 run, full just outside off, slapped to extra cover and they scramble a single

4.5

Kallis to Sangakkara, OUT, swing outside off, a thin edge through to the keeper was trying to go leg side, clearing the front leg to a full ball and it came off a top edge to chest height for de Villiers

KC Sangakkara c †de Villiers b Kallis 13 (13m 11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 118.18

4.6

Kallis to Perera, 1 run, outside off and a wild, wild swing gets a toe end to point

End of over 5 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 31/3 (48 runs required from 12 balls, RR: 6.20, RRR: 24.00)
NLTC Perera    1* (1b)      JH Kallis    1-0-9-1
EMDY Munaweera    12* (12b 1x4)      J Botha    1-0-9-0

Steyn now...

5.1

Steyn to Perera, 1 wide, pushed well wide of off stump

5.1

Steyn to Perera, no run, back of a length, slapped to extra cover, no run

5.2

Steyn to Perera, OUT, length ball and pulled to midwicket. Straight ball, tried to go over the leg side but it's takes some to clear these big boundaries, didn't catch it correctly and it landed directly where the fielder had just been moved to on the leg side fence

NLTC Perera c Duminy b Steyn 1 (5m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

5.3

Steyn to Munaweera, 1 run, back of a length, blocked in the crease, they scramble a run into the off side

5.4

Steyn to Mendis, no run, bumper that looked leg side but was judged to have gone over leg stump

5.5

Steyn to Mendis, FOUR, full outside off, lifted over mid on, nice strike

5.6

Steyn to Mendis, 1 run, leg side heave, just a single as deep midwicket scrambles in well from the rope

End of over 6 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 38/4 (41 runs required from 6 balls, RR: 6.33, RRR: 41.00)
BMAJ Mendis    5* (3b 1x4)      DW Steyn    2-0-10-2
EMDY Munaweera    13* (13b 1x4)      JH Kallis    1-0-9-1

So one over left, South Africa have won, let's get this done and dusted and down to Colombo...Albie Morkel to finish this off...

6.1

JA Morkel to Mendis, 1 wide, starts with a leg side wide, not great that at all

6.1

JA Morkel to Mendis, 1 run, length outside off, heaved towards the deep midwicket boundary, just a single again

6.2

JA Morkel to Munaweera, OUT, cut straight to deep cover, back of a length ball slapped perfectly to the fielder as he gave himself a hint of room

EMDY Munaweera c Behardien b JA Morkel 13 (30m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 92.85

6.3

JA Morkel to Mendis, 1 run, toe-ended towards extra cover from just outside off, back of a length

6.4

JA Morkel to Thirimanne, 2 runs, cut to short third man and dropped as he tried to take it with two hands above his head jumping up, burst straight through the fingers

6.5

JA Morkel to Thirimanne, 2 runs, slower ball, back of a length on leg stump, helped down to long leg who goes to his left to field

6.6

JA Morkel to Thirimanne, 1 run, pretty much an identical scenario down to ;long leg

And with the quick turnaround this evening, that's all we've got time for from Hambantota, we're quickly switching to our coverage from Colombo, where Sid Monga has all the details as West Indies bat first against Australia, so head over there and I'll see you tomorrow, stay classy...

So that's that and in terms of a 7-over match that is a hammering, South Africa win by 38 runs and qualify top of the group - not that it matters of course. AB de Villiers' made 30 from just 13 balls and with Duminy's late burst of 12 in 5 balls got too many for Sri Lanka to get even close to. They bowled well at the start and that killed the chase.

End of over 7 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 46/5 (33 runs required)
HDRL Thirimanne    5* (3b)      JA Morkel    1-0-8-1
BMAJ Mendis    7* (5b 1x4)      DW Steyn    2-0-10-2
