ICC World Twenty20 - 9th match, Group D

New Zealand v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 13 runs

Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Nazir are Pakistan's openers. Hafeez is a more composed batsman, Imran can be a cannon on his day. Kyle Mills to open the bowling for New Zealand, from over the wicket.

Marias Erasmus says play ...

3.20 pm Some reading material before the game. Ian Chappell has written that the surprisingly positive response of the Sri Lankan pitches to fast bowling has given nearly every top team a chance at the World Twenty20.

Mazher Arshad says that this tournament is Imran Nazir's last chance.

Toss, 3.00 pm Taylor calls tails, he loses. Mohammad Hafeez says Pakistan will bat. The four players Pakistan have left out are Mohammad Sami, Raza Hasan, Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq. So Yasir Arafat is playing ahead of Razzaq.

Taylor says this pitch seems a bit drier than the one they played on against Bangladesh. New Zealand have brought in the fast bowler Adam Milne to replace the injured Martin Guptill.

2.50 pm Abhishek Purohit, our reporter in Pallekele, says it's bright and sunny there at the moment. Whoop! Showers are forecast for later but let's hope it's much later.

Here's the preview for today's game. Martin Guptill won't play because he strained a hamstring during the Bangladesh game. BJ Watling would be a like for like swap for Guptill, but word is that Adam Milne might get a run today.

Ian Chappell, on Star Cricket, says the pitch is hard and a pretty good one to bat on.

BJ: "Pakistan should be simply too good." should being the operative word there. We'll have to wait and see which Pakistan turns up today. The Kiwi fan in me is inclined to hope that Pakistan replicate their "wonderful" performance against the Black Caps in last year's world cup." It isn't Taylor's birthday today, BJ!

2.45 pm Good afternoon and welcome to our ball-by-ball coverage of day six of the World Twenty20. Today's games hold a lot of promise, like yesterday's did before rain spoiled most of it, and let's hope the weather is better.

The first game is in Pallekele, where Pakistan begin their campaign against New Zealand. It's a funny schedule: Zimbabwe and Afghanistan have already been sent packing, while Australia, Sri Lanka and South Africa are done with the first round. Pakistan are just beginning. (Apologies for saying Ireland were eliminated earlier, they could upset West Indies tomorrow and make it. My brain faded.)

New Zealand have already beaten Bangladesh, who will be hoping that Pakistan lose today. Bangladesh lost by too large a margin against New Zealand - 59 runs - to want to rely on net run-rates. Victory for New Zealand today and they will be through.

Mark Kidger resumes his routine of being the first emailer: "New Zealand looked very good against Bangladesh, but Pakistan are a much bigger challenge. A win today would be extremely impressive, but Pakistan should be simply too good for them."

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, shortish ball around off stump, Hafeez punches the ball from his crease through midwicket and finds the gap, the timing on it is good as well

5.1

Southee to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Southee makes his third appeal and once again it is unsuccessful, Hafeez tried to swivel and pull but the ball was not short enough. The impact was too high on the pad, I think. In fact the ball hit the back thigh

Dan: "Replacing Guptill with an extra bowler is not really working, is it. Going to be chasing 180+ and short a batsman. I think I may as well go to bed."

Mohsin: "I think Hafeez is very underrated by a lot of Pakistani fans. He's not tremendously gifted but is more stable than any other Pakistani openers, and he tries to make up for natural talent with hard work, which by the way has no substitute. 5.05 pm Pakistan finish with 177 for 6. They looked like getting more when Hafeez and Jamshed were batting but it is still a good score, considering the bowling attack they have.

Anjan: "Pakistan is possibly 20-25 runs short of what their initial blitzkrieg promised..."

Hafeez: "Openers gave a great start and Nasir played a good innings. We had 160-plus in our mind and we have got it. the ball is not always coming on to the bat, the spinners will get some assistance here ..."

Time for me to hand over the commentary to Alex Winter for the New Zealand chase.
