ICC World Twenty20, 10th Match, Group A: England v India at Colombo (RPS), Sep 23, 2012
ICC World Twenty20 - 10th match, Group A
India won by 90 runs
Played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo (neutral venue)
23 September 2012 - night match (20-over match)

Steve Finn will bowl the first over. India might be experimenting, but England seem to have sorted things out. Two slips in place

Meanwhile, India are on a fooling streak. It's not Kohli, but Pathan who is opening with Gambhir. I tell you what, it is at east good to see: India making changes when times are close to desperate. In Australia they failed eight times in a row but never changed either the line-up or the order

"I think Dhoni is using this game to prove his 4 bowler strategy. By the time the fifth bowler Chawla finish his quota, nobody dares to talk about India's fifth bowler. Everybody would be saying we can do it with part-timers" Manjunath, you might just have got inside the brain of Dhoni

As the national anthems go on, I can tell you Kohli is padded, so he, and not Sharma, will open with Gambhir

7.20pm As people have been anticipating, we might have Broad v Yuvraj again. And when the two come together, they make for good cricket pictures. Here is a sample, in chronological order: Old Trafford, Kingsmead, Kingsmead, and Trent Bridge

7.10pm "So no Ashwin and Dinda is also playing. Means we have our excuse ready before the game has even begun." Sundar doesn't hope much of India, and perhaps not without reason. Meanwhile, look who is back: the deadly duo. And India are playing five bowlers

"Maybe all that 'four bowler' nonsense was a ruse. MSD just forgot to save the surprise for a game that matters..." PDTM, by now you should know better than to take Dhoni's press conferences seriously

"Sid, really "deadly" duo? Deadly for whom? You can call them a ( deadly ? ) one and a half..." Anees, or looking at one of them, perhaps two and a half?

England have won the toss and chosen to field. Stuart Broad says they batted in the first game, so it is nice to field first. They have expectedly brought in Bresnan for Patel. Broad says this is no warm-up for him, he is taking it seriously.

India, meanwhile, are taking it as a practice game, and have left out Sehwag, Tendulkar - oops Zaheer, Ashwin and Tiwary

6.45pm Amid appalling over-rates, inconsequential matches between big matches, a no-show from minnows, and the threat of rain lurking around every corner, the World Twenty20 rolls into its 10th game. Hello and welcome. It won't be an overstatement to say the Super Eights can't arrive soon enough. As we speak, it's 6.45pm, and the previous game is still on. It should have ended at 6.30pm. Surprisingly there have been no reprimands or fines or bans for the slow over-rates when almost every match has gone into overtime.

Be that as it may, tonight England and India come face to face one last time (unless they meet again in the semi or final) before the big Test series in India. MS Dhoni has said India are going to use this as a practice match, and try untested players before more meaningful matches. Stuart Broad has said his side will take this game as seriously as any other WT20 game, but he is also much closer than Dhoni is to an ideal combination. Let's see what XIs are revealed at the toss, which will happen in 15 minutes

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length, on middle and leg, seaming away a touch, edged away past second slip. And Finn has fallen over in his follow through. Hope he doesn't kick the stumps

Finn to Pathan, no run, short of a length, pitched outside leg, 144ks, beats him for the pace, hits him on the thigh

Mudassir: "Piyush Chawla might be in selectors fantasy league. Could be the only reason for his selection"

Finn to Pathan, 2 runs, this is dug in short, and Pathan has pulled this well, all along the ground, rolling the wrists on it, wide of deep square

Finn to Pathan, 1 leg bye, appeal for lbw, but with this ball hitting middle and leg and not swinging, it had to pitch outside leg. Aleem Dar thinks the same

Finn to Gambhir, 1 wide, posthumous swing there. Short of a length, just outside leg, and swings away big time after passing Gambhir's hip. Kieswetter does well to collect it with a dive

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, dug in short again, Gambhir is in the air to try to work it away, is hit on the thigh, and Pathan calls him through for a leg-bye, even though the ball has gone about six feet from the stumps

Finn to Pathan, no run, huge lbw shout. This is bowled really full, and Pathan is playing across the line. However, Dar again thinks it is pitched outside leg

End of over 1 (6 runs) India 6/0 (RR: 6.00)

    • G Gambhir 2 (2b)
    • ST Finn 1-0-5-0

Some time ago, you couldn't convince Dhoni Pathan is a better batsman than Ashwin. And here he is opening the innings. How times have changed. Meanwhile it is Dernbach to bowl

Dernbach to Gambhir, no run, short and wide, that's a four ball, but Gambhir misses out on the quick

Dernbach to Gambhir, no run, short of a length, on the pads, pushed to square leg inside the circle

Dernbach to Gambhir, FOUR, that's a bit of rubbish. Short, gentle pace, pitched outside leg, and it bounces just waist high. Gambhir pulls it away between square leg and midwicket

Dernbach to Gambhir, FOUR, that's a nice shot. Length ball, outside off, Gambhir follows it, opens the face, and times it superbly, placing it to the right of point and left of third man

The second slip moves to short midwicket

Dernbach to Gambhir, 1 leg bye, short of a length, outside leg, Gambhir gets a leg-bye around the corner

Dernbach to Pathan, 1 run, slower ball at 109ks, and another appeal against Pathan, but he seems to have got a bit of an inside edge on this. Otherwise it pitched within the stumps, and was going on to hit

End of over 2 (10 runs) India 16/0 (RR: 8.00)

    • IK Pathan 3 (5b)
    • G Gambhir 10 (7b 2x4)
    • JW Dernbach 1-0-9-0
    • ST Finn 1-0-5-0

Finn to Pathan, 1 wide, bouncer, 144ks, too high, and called a wide

Finn to Pathan, 1 run, pulled this time, in front of square, and mistimed too, but Pathan gets a single to mid-on

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, dabbed away for a single

"Reason for chawla's inclusion - Dhoni wants to create history by being the first captain to win a game by playing against 12 men" Anerudh Balaji, Chawla could be reading all these, and could be itching to serve us some humble pie

Finn to Pathan, FOUR, nice upper-cut. Finn bowls short again, provides him width, and Pathan gets under it, and sends it over point. Are England getting carried away with the short ball? This is not England, mind you

Dead ball as Finn knocks the bails off. For whatever it is worth, it beat Pathan's hoick and hit him on the thigh pad

Finn to Pathan, 1 wide, slower ball gone horribly wrong, a big wide down leg side

"The first and only line in my will - "All my property goes to the one who can read Dhoni's mind."" Jake, you want to cling on to your possessions even when dead?

Finn to Pathan, OUT, Finn has made the necessary correction. Bowls full and hits timber. Slightly fuller than a length ball, on off, holding its line slightly, Pathan has driven all around it, and he and his off stump have gone for a walk. That certainly seems back a little to hold its line against the angle

IK Pathan b Finn 8 (14m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

In comes perhaps India's only form player, Virat Kohli

Finn to Kohli, no run, good welcome from Finn. Short of a length, on middle and off, seaming away a touch, and Kohli is right behind it

Finn to Kohli, FOUR, can this man do anything wrong? He has just defended a peach, but as soon as he gets width on alength ball, he drives it between cover and cover-point. Seems he could do it in his sleep

End of over 3 (12 runs) India 28/1 (RR: 9.33)

    • V Kohli 4 (2b 1x4)
    • G Gambhir 11 (8b 2x4)

    • JW Dernbach 1-0-9-0

Here's captain Broad

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length, middle and leg, worked away towards deep square

Broad to Kohli, FOUR, Kohli is on. Definitely on. Short of a length, outside off, and he has punched it away square for a four

Broad to Kohli, no run, gets a much easier ball this time, a half-volley, but finds short extra cover with it

Broad to Kohli, no run, good come back from Broad. Short of a length, outside off, seaming away, Kohli follows it, and is beaten

Broad to Kohli, 1 run, slightly fuller, slightly slower, steered away to third man

Broad to Gambhir, no run, short of a length, outside off, plays the dab, but can't beat point

End of over 4 (6 runs) India 34/1 (RR: 8.50)

    • G Gambhir 12 (10b 2x4)
    • V Kohli 9 (6b 2x4)

    • ST Finn 2-0-17-1

Bresnan to bowl now

Bresnan to Kohli, no run, short of a length, just outside off, defended to cover

Bresnan to Kohli, 1 run, nice bounce from just short of a length, rising towards the chest, Kohli stands tall, opens the face, gets a single

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length, just outside off, and they drop and run before Morgan can swoop in

Bresnan to Kohli, FOUR, Kohli charges down, and doesn't care what is bowled at him. Bresnan bowls short, gets it chest high, but Kohli still upper-cuts it over point

Bresnan to Kohli, no run, length ball, wide outside off, Kohli doesn't move his feet, but times it well still. However, he has found the cover with this one

Slip comes out, third man moves fine

Bresnan to Kohli, 1 run, dabbed away square of third man, but not square enough to come back for two

End of over 5 (7 runs) India 41/1 (RR: 8.20)

    • V Kohli 15 (11b 3x4)
    • G Gambhir 13 (11b 2x4)
    • TT Bresnan 1-0-7-0
    • SCJ Broad 1-0-6-0

Gambhir fixes his neck chain, and Finn comes back for a third over. Braod wants wickets. There's one wide slip in place

Finn to Kohli, FOUR, Slips don't matter when you are in this form. Finn gives him a half-volley outside off, and he wristily drives it between Finn and mid-on

Finn to Kohli, no run, short of a length, just outside off, pushed to cover-point

Finn to Kohli, 1 run, short of a length, into the pads, worked away to deep square

Finn to Gambhir, FOUR, Gambhir gets into the act now. Dances down the wicket, and makes room too before crashing this shortish delivery between cover and cover-point

Finn to Gambhir, 1 run, dabs this one past point for a single

"I love these little batting 'experiments', and I just hope they catch on in other aspects of sport and life. Perhaps a Davis Cup team will let the ball-boy play one of the rubbers, and maybe my boss will put me in charge of pay roll tomorrow. We can only hope!" GK, hope doesn't float any more

Finn to Kohli, 1 run, short of a length, on the stumps, nicely guided to third man

End of over 6 (11 runs) India 52/1 (RR: 8.66)

    • V Kohli 21 (15b 4x4)
    • G Gambhir 18 (13b 3x4)
    • ST Finn 3-0-28-1
    • TT Bresnan 1-0-7-0

Graeme Swann to bowl now

Swann to Kohli, 1 run, full, fast, on the pad, worked away for a single

Round the wicket to Gambhir

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, Gambhir is down the wicket right away, and chips him to long-off for one

"I don't think I have ever seen someone bat in this sort of form. I have seen better players, but I am sure that Kohli is batting well beyond what anyone expects his ability to be." PDTM, you better not shake his hand. You might turn to gold

Swann to Kohli, no run, short of a length, on of,f doesn't turn, and Kohli does well to get an inside edge onto the pad

Swann to Kohli, 1 run, down the track, right down to the pitch, works it away for one

Swann to Gambhir, 1 wide, fired down the leg side, and is a wide

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, slower now, but no turn still, punched away to deep midwicket

Swann to Kohli, 1 run, full, on off, driven to long-on for one

End of over 7 (6 runs) India 58/1 (RR: 8.28)

    • V Kohli 24 (19b 4x4)

"Jake, Dhoni always thinks what he thinks others can't think - no matter good or rubbish." Anees, do you think you can call that king of thinking "thinking"? Broad is back

Broad to Kohli, 1 run, full, outside off, driven to sweeper-cover

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run, bouncer, pulled away crunchily, doesn't keep it down, but it bounces short of deep midwicket

Broad to Kohli, FOUR, it seemed Broad had done him in by following a backing-away Kohli, but he still manages to whip it over midwicket. One of these days, Kohli will actually mistime a shot

Broad to Kohli, no run, a massive grunt from Kohli as he misses out on a short and a wide delivery. No feet there

Broad to Kohli, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, steered away to third man

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length, on the stumps, runs it down to third man for one

End of over 8 (8 runs) India 66/1 (RR: 8.25)

    • V Kohli 30 (23b 5x4)
    • SCJ Broad 2-0-14-0
    • GP Swann 1-0-6-0

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, gets too close to the pitch of the ball as he dances down, but manages to chip it well short of long-off for one

Swann to Kohli, no run, sharp turn, from short of a length and just outside off. For once, Kohli is cramped, and can't get it away

Swann to Kohli, 1 run, too short, pulled away to deep midwicket

Swann to Gambhir, no run, nice delivery. Full, middle and leg, surprises Gambhir with no turn and quickness. Hits the pads, gets a dot

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, beaten in the flight as Swann tosses this up, but Gambhir manages to chip this over the infield on the off side

Swann to Kohli, 1 run, fullish, turning into the pads, helped away for one - just four off the over

End of over 9 (4 runs) India 70/1 (RR: 7.77)

Bresnan to Kohli, FOUR, Read this two or three times to believe this. Off the front foot, he has pulled a short-of-a-length delivery into the cow corner. He didn't even go back to create the pulling length. That's a shot and a half

Bresnan to Kohli, 1 run, steers this one down to third man for one

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, bouncer, hits him high on the bat as he pulls, but the ball doesn't go up, and he gets a single to deep square

Bresnan to Kohli, 1 run, slower full, too full, driven to long-on for one

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, digs it in short again, but it bounces only waist high, and he has pulled it to deep square on the bounce

Bresnan to Kohli, 2 runs, charges down, yorks himself, but steers it to the right of third man, and comes back for two

End of over 10 (10 runs) India 80/1 (RR: 8.00)

    • V Kohli 40 (30b 6x4)
    • G Gambhir 26 (22b 3x4)

Run-rate exactly eight. India will want to up it. Here is Swann, who has conceded just 10 in two overs

Swann to Gambhir, 1 bye, how did that not bowl him? Missed stumping anyway. Beats Gambhir in the flight as this dips on him, and he falls over, and the ball squeezes between him and the leg stump. Kieswetter makes a mess of it

Swann to Kohli, no run, more lovely bowling. This is the quicker one, the toppie, outside off, and beats Kohli's drive

Swann to Kohli, OUT, the pressure from Swann has finally drawn a false shot. Kohli gets too close to this delivery, and goes towards midwicket. Because he is so close to the pitch of the ball, he doesn't get the elevation, and picks out deep midwicket

V Kohli c Bairstow b Swann 40 (33m 32b 6x4 0x6) SR: 125.00

Rohit Sharma gets a bat

Swann to Sharma, no run, flighted outside off, pushed to cover

Swann to Sharma, 1 run, full, nearly a yorker, driven to long-on

Swann to Gambhir, 1 leg bye, How did Aleem not give that? Flighted on off, doesn;t turn, goes with the arm, beats Gambhir who is playing across the line. Live time, that looked plumb. Aleem, though, doesn't raise his finger, and calls it a leg-bye too, which rules out an edge

End of over 11 (3 runs) India 83/2 (RR: 7.54)

    • G Gambhir 26 (24b 3x4)
    • RG Sharma 1 (2b)

Dernbach is bach

Dernbach to Gambhir, 1 run, short of a length, on off, dabbed away to third man

Dernbach to Sharma, no run, bouncer, 141ks, Sharma ducks under it

Dernbach to Sharma, 1 run, short of a length, angling in, pushed to midwicket, and they steal a single

Dernbach to Gambhir, 1 run, slower ball, 110ks, short of a length, on the stumps, Gambhir reads it well, and runs it down to third man

Dernbach to Sharma, FOUR, pulled off the front foot, short at 135ks, and he gets it over midwicket even though the weight is coming forward all the time

Dernbach to Sharma, 1 run, short of a length, widish, punched away to deep cover

End of over 12 (8 runs) India 91/2 (RR: 7.58)

    • RG Sharma 7 (6b 1x4)
    • G Gambhir 28 (26b 3x4)
    • JW Dernbach 2-0-17-0

Swann to bowl out - 3-0-11-1 so far

Swann to Sharma, no run, flighted, slow through the air, driven back to him

Swann to Sharma, 1 run, even slower, and gets it to dip on him, but Sharma lets it turn, and works it around the corner

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, angling into the pads, pushed into the leg side for one

Swann to Sharma, 1 run, length ball, turning in towards off, worked away to wide of Wright at deep square, Sharma wants two, but Gambhir is not turning back

Swann to Gambhir, 1 run, flighted outside off, a half-volley really, driven to sweeper-cover

Swann to Sharma, 2 runs, Morgan and Bairstow have made a mess of this. This is bunted into the leg side, between those two men who are converging on the ball. Neither of them collects it, though, and that gives India enough time to come back for the second

Top spell from Swann then: 4-0-17-1

End of over 13 (6 runs) India 97/2 (RR: 7.46)

    • RG Sharma 11 (10b 1x4)

Broad comes back

Broad to Gambhir, FOUR, short of a length, outside of,f driven powerfully on the up, to the left of Fin n at sweeper-cover, who dives all over it

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run, slower short ball, pulled away without control, but it doesn't carry to midwicket

Broad to Sharma, 1 run, shapes up to pull, but this ball stops at him, and he checks the shot to keep it down and take a single to midwicket

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run, short, pulled away to deep midwicket on the bounce. He connected this well

Broad to Sharma, 1 run, short of a length, just outside off, dabbed to point

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run, slower ball, short of a length, pitches leg, cuts away, Gambhir drops and runs, and gets the single easily

End of over 14 (9 runs) India 106/2 (RR: 7.57)

    • G Gambhir 37 (32b 4x4)
    • RG Sharma 13 (12b 1x4)

Bresnan replaces Swann

Bresnan to Gambhir, FOUR, length ball on the pads with fine leg really square. Gambhir plays it fine, and gets four for it

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, dabs this wide of cover for one

Bresnan to Sharma, no run, that's a bit of a peach. Kicks off from short of a length, at 133ks, and beats Sharma's rather ambitious drive

Bresnan to Sharma, 1 run, short of a length again, Sharma moves across, works this into the leg side for one

Gambhir is sweating profusely

Bresnan to Gambhir, 1 run, slower bouncer, and Gambhir has mistimed it horrible, but has got it to land between the infield and the boundary riders

Bresnan to Sharma, 1 run, full, on off, pushed to long-on for one

End of over 15 (8 runs) India 114/2 (RR: 7.60)

    • RG Sharma 15 (15b 1x4)
    • G Gambhir 43 (35b 5x4)
    • TT Bresnan 3-0-25-0

There has been no spell of acceleration from India since the end of the Powerplay. What can they do in the last five? Gambhir looks really tired with sweat dripping through his helmet

Finn to Sharma, 2 runs, Sharma opens up the front leg and lofts this absolutely straight. He hasn't timed it, but the straightness of the shot means it doesn't land in a fielder's lap

Finn's last over coming up

Finn to Sharma, 1 run, slower ball, pushed to long-on for one

Finn to Gambhir, no run, lovely bouncer, 137ks, really sharp, between the shoulder and the head, and rising as it reached Kieswetter, who makes a one-handed overhead take

Finn to Gambhir, 2 runs, slower ball, Gambhir mis-hits the slog, and it lands safe between three men - midwicket, long-on and deep square

Finn to Gambhir, OUT, Finn has got his man. Gambhir has had a patchy innings, and finally one goes to hand. It;s the slower offcutter again, Gambhir looks to make room and go over extra cover, but all he manages is a healthy edge. The ball, though, is dying on Kieswetter, who dives forward to complete the catch

G Gambhir c †Kieswetter b Finn 45 (70m 38b 5x4 0x6) SR: 118.42

Still no Yuvraj. In comes Dhoni himself

Broad to bowl his last over now. Dernbach has tow left, Bresnan one

Broad to Sharma, 2 runs, length ball, into the pads, worked away, with soft hands, comes back for two

Broad to Sharma, FOUR, nice shot. Broad bowls the bouncer, following the backing-away Sharma, and he just opens the face to dink it over the keeper's head. Hold on, he closed his eyes as he played it

"This game will be close. Kiwis made it a close game too...order of batting strange. Back to Eng team, the Somerset boys will shine tonight...in honour of the apple an Taunton...it's harvest time!!" Miles, have a good one in Taunton

Broad to Sharma, FOUR, poor bowling. He has just brought the fine leg up, and he has bowled a short ball down leg side. Easily puled over that man

Broad to Sharma, no run, full and wide, Sharma is rooted on leg stump, and can't reach it with the drive

Broad to Sharma, 3 runs, length ball, on off, slogged into the cow corner, Bairstow from long-on can't make the catch, but does well by pulling the ball back in even though it is over the rope but in the air. Saves one run

Broad to Dhoni, no run, it's all happening. Broad beats Dhoni with the pace on a short delivery, and the ball lodges itself between his pad and his leg. Broad realises, though, that Sharma is running up, so he goes, collects the ball from its cosy resting place and tries to run Sharma out. Misses, though, and Sharma was gone by a long way had he hit. But I think the ball becomes dead as soon as it lodges itself there

End of over 17 (13 runs) India 132/3 (RR: 7.76)

Dernbach is back to bowl 18 and 20

Dernbach to Sharma, 2 runs, slower ball right away, and Fin misfields at short fine to allow the second

Dernbach to Sharma, 1 run, full outside off, driven to third man for one

Dernbach to Dhoni, FOUR, low full toss and wide, Dhoni gets enough bat on it, and places it to the left of sweeper-cover where Wright dives valiantly and in vain

Dernbach to Dhoni, 2 runs, slower legcutter, short of a length, on off, muscled away towards midwicket where Swann misfields to allow the second

England have been sloppy in the field tonight

Dernbach to Dhoni, 1 run, wide of the crease, and bowls full and wide. Dhoni can't get under it, but drives it into the ground, and it bounces over Dernbach

Dernbach to Sharma, 1 run, slower ball again, dips alarmingly at him to york him. Concedes just the single towards long-off

End of over 18 (11 runs) India 143/3 (RR: 7.94)

Bresnan's last over coming up

Bresnan to Sharma, 2 runs, Sharma moves well across, and disturbs a leg-side wide to lob it over short fine for a couple. It was a slower ball, which is why he couldn't time it

Bresnan to Sharma, FOUR, wide full toss, would have been another wide had Sharma not edged it away for four fine of third man

We are five minutes into overtime. This innings was supposed to end at 8.50pm

Bresnan to Sharma, no run, slower short ball, Sharma moves across to try to pull, but is beaten by the pace

Bresnan to Sharma, 1 run, full and wide, drilled to sweeper-cover for one

Bresnan to Dhoni, no run, slower ball, short of a length, cutting in, cramping Dhoni up, who has bludgeoned this into his own toe. Precious dot

Bresnan to Dhoni, 1 wide, another dot. Oh, hold on, he has called this a wide. This is full and wide, but just inside that guide line for mine. Dhoni doesn't reach it, but it has been called a wide

Bresnan to Dhoni, 2 runs, yorker, but helicoptered away, Bresnan gets a hand to it, which takes pace off it, and that facilitates the second

End of over 19 (10 runs) India 153/3 (RR: 8.05)

    • MS Dhoni 9 (7b 1x4)
    • RG Sharma 42 (29b 4x4)

Last over of the innings. This could prove decisive in the final equation. Meanwhile the ball is out of shape, and we need to change it. It's taken two minutes to find a replacement. David Lloyd things England have slipped up because this ball will travel further. He thinks they should have bowled with the out-of-shape ball

Dernbach to Sharma, 1 wide, wide length ball, Sharma can't reach it, called a wide

"What IS the deal with the general fielding of this tournament? We saw South Africa drop 3 sitters in the 42 balls they were in the field for last night. New Zealand who pride themselves on their fielding abilities weren't exactly very good tonight. Is there something in Sri Lanka messing the fielding up?" BJ, the outfields in Colombo and Hambantota have been patchy, but it can't all be put down to that

Dernbach to Sharma, SIX, full toss, wide outside off, and he has sliced it for a six, the first of the innings. This ball has travelled all right. How well has he timed it. Didn't look like hitting it at all

Dernbach to Sharma, FOUR, slower ball, dipping on him, turning out to be a low full toss, and he has swept it between square leg and short fine leg. Sharma has reached fifty off 31. That will do him a world of good

Dernbach to Sharma, 1 run, slower legcutter, Sharma can't time it, gets a single to cover

Dernbach to Dhoni, 1 wide, wide - full and wide, but he has pushed it too wide

Dernbach to Dhoni, OUT, lovely tag-team work. Slower ball, Dhoni gets more height than distance, but this is still taking Butler with it over the long-on boundary. Butler catches it inches inside, knows he is going to step over with the momentum, and lobs it back in before doing so. And it turns out to be an easy catch for Hales, who has also run for the catch

MS Dhoni c Hales b Dernbach 9 (23m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 112.50

Raina is on strike because Dhoni had already come back for two

Dernbach to Raina, 1 wide, Dernbach is having a horror time of time. Another wide, this time down the leg side

Dernbach to Raina, 1 run, slower ball, dipping on him outside off, yorks him, concedes just the single

Dernbach to Sharma, 2 runs, slower legcutter, short too, Sharma has to reach for it, and he chips it into the off side and gets a couple off the last ball

India were 80 for 1 after 10 overs, so England will think they have done well from there on. But they were also just 119 after 16, so India will think they have done well from there on. Sharma and Swann were the stars of the innings. Just one six, though. The question is, have India scored enough for their brittle attack to defend? We will soon find out

End of over 20 (17 runs) India 170/4

    • SK Raina 1 (1b)
    • JW Dernbach 4-0-45-1
