ICC World Twenty20 - 15th match, Group 2

Pakistan v South Africa

Pakistan won by 2 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)

Thanks George. I had a feeling before this game that South Africa would struggle against the spinners. They really did make them struggle. Great opportunity here for Pakistan. The players are walking out. Steyn to bowl

0.1

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, beaten first ball! That late away movement off a fuller length, Hafeez was forward to drive and that was close to the edge

0.2

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 wide, Steyn loses control of that one, full down the leg side and the batsman couldn't flick it away

0.2

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, slightly slower and he gets well forward and pushes it to the off side

0.3

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, connects and finds the gap, Steyn bowls a half volley outside off and Hafeez got across and caressed it past cover

0.4

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, too straight and on the pads, the fine leg was up and Steyn was punished for that line, turned off the hips behind square, used the pace of the ball

0.5

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, false shot this time, held the length back a bit and Hafeez was on the backfoot to punch it to the off side, not much foot movement

0.6

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, another false shot, this time off the front foot, slower delivery and fuller and moving away, nearly took the edge

Word from the ground is that there's very light cloud cover building up one side of the ground, nothing alarming though

End of over 1 (9 runs) Pakistan 9/0 (125 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 9.00, RRR: 6.57)

1.3

M Morkel to Imran Nazir, no run, fullish in length outside off and he comes forward and pushes it softly to the off side

1.4

M Morkel to Imran Nazir, FOUR, streaky! Nazir shapes to pull but too early on the shot, bottom edge beats the stumps and the diving keeper for a boundary

1.5

M Morkel to Imran Nazir, FOUR, nothing streaky about this one, full outside the off stump and Nazir likes the width, slams that square on the off side off the front foot

1.6

M Morkel to Imran Nazir, 1 run, gives that another blow, this time it's in the air and safely down to Amla at fine leg, too full and wide

End of over 2 (11 runs) Pakistan 20/0 (114 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 10.00, RRR: 6.33)

Steyn to Imran Nazir, no run, appeal for an lbw! Skidded through after pitching and he was trapped on the back foot and that was hitting a bit too high on the pad

2.2

2.3

Steyn to Imran Nazir, no run, lands it outside off and he punches it down to cover

2.4

Steyn to Imran Nazir, no run, the slower ball this time beats Nazir's wild slash through the off side, makes a bit of room, eyes on the ball Imran

2.5

Steyn to Imran Nazir, no run, aims for the yorker but it's a low full toss, he pushes it straight to mid-off

2.6

Steyn to Imran Nazir, OUT, soft dismissal! Nazir gloves it down the leg side and it lobs up and de Villiers takes it diving forward, Steyn bowled it short down the leg side and Nazir couldn't resist the pull, took his glove and de Villiers ran forward and timed his dive well, Nazir's hand came off the handle so he was never in control of that

Luke: "I wasn't convinced they would struggle vs the spin; SA handled the form spinner Ajmal as one would hope they would - going at roughly 6/7 an over off his bowling. they'd probably have hoped to take a few more off Hafeez but they did not account for Reza and by the time he'd finished they were already in all sorts of trouble!"

Hafeez: "We played couple of bad shots but great team effort. I knew that Gul could hit it hard. This is good sign that everybody is contributing. We did well to restrict them, in the end Pakistan was lucky to get this."

Gul is the Man of the Match: "I must thank to my coach. I told Akmal that we should stay at the crease, the flick is my favourite shot."

Pakistan can celebrate this tonight, but really they should have a look at some of the shots played by the top order. They treated it like a T10 slogathon. Shouldn't have been this close. Plenty for both teams to think about.

Don't go anywhere. India v Australia coming up. Cheers!

End of match: Umar Akmal may have stayed there till the end to give Pakistan the reassurance that a specialist was around, and due credit to him, but take your hat off to Umar Gul. Out of the blew, he produced some clean blows over the on side and had the South Africans paralysed. The equation was reducing rapidly with every six and the South Africans panicked.

You look at the bowling figures and wonder why on earth Botha and Duminy bowled only two overs each for not much. De Villiers will be grilled for his management of the bowlers surely.

Pathan: "Un-b****y-believable. The amount of adrenalin that has been pumped around my body watching Pakistan over the years could power half of Karachi! Afridi is a real disgrace. I hope he is demoted to number 11 in the next match."
