ICC World Twenty20, 22nd Match, Group 1: Sri Lanka v England at Pallekele, Oct 1, 2012
ICC World Twenty20 - 22nd match, Group 1
Sri Lanka won by 19 runs
1 October 2012 - night match (20-over match)

Anyway, Angelo Mathews will open the bowling to Luke Wright

A development: Sri Lanka have been awarded an extra run (possibly for good behaviour), so England will need 170. Don't ask me for any more detail than that.

Hello. How you diddly doing? Sri Lanka are basically through - England would need to chase 169 in less than 13 overs and that, my friends, ain't gonna happen. So it's England v West Indies for the second semi-final spot. Be a good time for Ravi Bopara to find some form, eh?

Mathews to Wright, no run, good length outside off, opens the face and pushes to point

Mathews to Wright, no run, another length ball in the channel, Wright hopes across and steers to point again

Mathews to Wright, no run, touch shorter, Wright advances and plays an ungainly swipe across the line that misses

Mathews to Wright, FOUR, he connects this time, whipping a short delivery through midwicket for four, the first runs of the innings

Mathews to Wright, 1 run, pitched up on leg stump, clipped through backward square leg

Mathews to Hales, 2 runs, length ball, coming in towards middle and leg, punched wide of mid-on, well placed and they'll get back for a couple

End of over 1 (7 runs) England 7/0 (163 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 7.00, RRR: 8.57)

    • AD Hales 2 (1b)
    • LJ Wright 5 (5b 1x4)
    • AD Mathews 1-0-7-0

Nuwan Kulasekera running in from the other end

Kulasekara to Wright, no run, fullish, pitching in line and seaming further, hits Wright on the pad but Taufel shakes his head - going down leg

Kulasekara to Wright, SIX, short ball and that's dumped all the way over deep midwicket, Wright saw it early and crumped a belligerent pull for six

Kulasekara to Wright, 1 run, length ball, slightly wide, Wright throws his hands and slices one to third man on the bounce

Kulasekara to Hales, no run, pitched up, on leg stump, Hales is stuck on the crease and hit on his standing leg

Kulasekara to Hales, 1 leg bye, full and tailing in again, going past leg stump, Hales backs away, swipes and misses, the ball deflects to short third man

Sangakkara up to the stumps now

Kulasekara to Wright, no run, length ball on the stumps, hops away early and tries to cut through point, straight at the fielder

End of over 2 (8 runs) England 15/0 (155 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 7.50, RRR: 8.61)

    • LJ Wright 12 (9b 1x4 1x6)
    • AD Hales 2 (3b)
    • KMDN Kulasekara 1-0-7-0
    • AD Mathews 1-0-7-0

Lasith Malinga, the snaky slinger, into the attack in place of Mathews. Sri Lanka's extra run came from when they were docked a second for being one short in the 17th over, by the way

Malinga to Hales, 1 run, low, skiddy delivery on the stumps, worked into the leg side

Malinga to Wright, no run, rolls his fingers over this, slowing the ball down, Wright can only block ineffectually down on to the pitch

Malinga to Wright, OUT, bit of width, slashed hard and straight to point! The ball was there to cut but Wright didn't manage to stay on top of it, still whacked it pretty hard though but Dilshan is just the guy you want the ball to fly to in such a situation and he snaps it up

LJ Wright c Dilshan b Malinga 12 (10m 11b 1x4 1x6) SR: 109.09

Jonny Bairstow is in at No. 3

Malinga to Bairstow, 2 runs, full, an attempted toe-crusher from Malinga, blocked short on the leg side and Hales goes charging down the wicket, is told to go back by YJB and Malinga fields, hurls to the non-striker's end, Kulasekara can't grasp it though and England run the overthrows!

Malinga to Bairstow, OUT, well, there's no doubt about this one, slapped high into the night sky, all height and no trousers, the ball plopping safely into the hands of mid-off

JM Bairstow c Kulasekara b Malinga 2 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Malinga to Hales, OUT, yorker, smashes Hales on the pad and gone! Three in the over for Malinga! It was full, fierce and practically growling as it reached Hales, who was almost knocked off his feet - Hawk Eye suggests it would have missed leg stump but there are no reprieves in this format and England are tumbling like nine pins

AD Hales lbw b Malinga 3 (15m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 60.00

End of over 3 (3 runs) England 18/3 (152 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 8.94)

Kulasekara to Patel, 1 run, touch short of a length outside the line of off, steered behind point to get Patel off the mark

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, good length, angled across towards the top of off, blocked back down the wicket

Kulasekara to Morgan, no run, another lbw appeal, might have been a inside edge as Morgan played back in front of the stumps

End of over 4 (1 run) England 19/3 (151 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 4.75, RRR: 9.43)

    • EJG Morgan 0 (2b)
    • SR Patel 1 (4b)
    • KMDN Kulasekara 2-0-8-0
    • SL Malinga 1-0-3-3

Forget Gangnam Style, this is a run chase England Style. And we haven't even had an over of spin yet! Malinga, damage done, is off again, Mathews his replacement

Mathews to Patel, 1 run, good length, fiddled towards mid-on for one

Mathews to Morgan, 1 run, turned through midwicket, Jayawardene's slide confuses the man coming in off the rope but they still get just one

Mathews to Patel, no run, slower ball, pushed through outside off and Patel can only poke his rhubarb stick lamely, unsuccessfully

Mathews to Patel, SIX, touch full, in the slot and Patel Battenbergs the back down the ground for six over long-on

Mathews to Patel, no run, sliding down the leg side, tries to flick, comes off the pad and rolls to square leg

Mathews to Patel, 1 run, bit of width and cut to point, who falls over in the process of fielding

"To all those who've jibed at England's perceived spin weakness - on your face!" Did you perhaps mean "in your face", Krithikou?

Kulasekara to Patel, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump and driven handsomely through the covers for four

Kulasekara to Patel, no run, takes the pace off, foxes Patel who prods and misses

Kulasekara to Patel, FOUR, another slower ball, out the back of the hand, and Patel's light up like it's time for seconds, waits on it and carves over extra-cover for another boundary

Kulasekara to Patel, no run, length ball, sliding down the leg side, hit on the pad trying to turn to leg

Kulasekara to Patel, no run, outside the line of off and punched to point - dot ball

Kulasekara to Patel, no run, good length, Patel advances to narrow the gap and slaps hard, out of the meat, but straight at the fielder again

End of over 6 (8 runs) England 36/3 (134 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 9.57)

    • SR Patel 17 (15b 2x4 1x6)
    • EJG Morgan 1 (3b)

    • AD Mathews 2-0-16-0

Here we go then, cue the Benny Hill music. Ajantha Mendis is coming on

BAW Mendis to Morgan, 1 run, pushed through, bit of width and cut hard, there's a misfield and they get one

BAW Mendis to Patel, FOUR, too short from Mendis, wide of the stumps, Patel back away and crashes a four in front of square on the off side

BAW Mendis to Patel, no run, this one goes straight on outside off, thick-edged low to backward point

BAW Mendis to Patel, FOUR, length ball in the channel, Patel rocks back again and thrashes a cut shot away to the fence - playing well, Patel

BAW Mendis to Patel, 1 wide, loses his line down the leg side this time

BAW Mendis to Patel, FOUR, full toss and Patel doesn't miss out, crunching the ball over cover for his third boundary in the over! That brings up the fifty too

BAW Mendis to Patel, no run, pushed through on leg stump, straightens a touch and played back down the pitch

Well, it's not a mystery to Patel. Here's Matthew: "I've never understood why everyone knocks Patel so much, I think he's a quality player! Let's hope this innings will prove that to some people!"

End of over 7 (14 runs) England 50/3 (120 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 7.14, RRR: 9.23)

Mendis off, Akila Dananjaya on. How will Patel cope with this bamboozler?

Dananjaya to Patel, no run, floated up on the stumps, backs away and chops to point

Dananjaya to Patel, 1 run, flighted around the line of off, again the batsman makes room and clumps in front of point, beats the infield for a single

That's that from Pallekele, quite literally, because this ground is no longer required. We're all off to Colombo for the rest of the tournament, starting with the conclusion to Group 2 tomorrow. Australia v Pakistan at 3.30pm and India v South Africa at 7.30pm with a stack of permutations of whom is going through. So tune in tomorrow, from Monty and I, Alex Winter, it's sayonara...

So England heading home, they'll next be in action in India for the start of the Test series in November. But hosts Sri Lanka remain in the competition with a three from three record in the Super Eights, and now travel to Colombo full of confidence. With the home crowd behind them and their players in fine form, could it be their year again?

Presentation time and the post mortem begins for Stuart Broad: "We've learnt a huge amount from this, we need to keep wickets in hand at the top, we fell short at the top of the order and are death bowling too. Samit also today showed what he could do."

Here comes the Sri Lanka captain Mahela Kumar Sangakkara. "Well I was the official captain today. The guys played really well. Lasith is unbelievable, here with the new ball and with the old ball. It would be fantastic if we can win it but the focus is to keep our feet on the ground." Man of the Match for his five wickets is Lasitha Malinga.

And there we go, the champions are out as Sri Lanka win by 19 runs. The hosts were pretty much at their best tonight, recovered well with the bat, showed they had depth, got a good score and then defended it with an outstanding performance from Lasitha Malinga, who took 5 for 31 and ripped the heart out of England's chase.

End of over 20 (6 runs) England 150/9 (20 runs required)
