ICC World Twenty20 - 24th match, Group 2

India v South Africa

India won by 1 run

6.50 pm Good evening and welcome to our ball-by-ball coverage of the last Super Eights game, between India and South Africa in Colombo. Pakistan's 32-run victory against Australia has ruined the World Twenty20 for South Africa, who now have no chance of making the semi-finals. India's job has got much harder, too. Only if they beat South Africa by a margin large enough to take their net run-rate ahead of Pakistan's +0.273, will India join Australia as the semi-finalists from Group 2. India's net run rate is -0.452 at present.

So as it stands, Australia are through, and Pakistan are sitting pretty with four points and a net run-rate of +0.273. S Rajesh, our stats man, on Twitter: "If India score 160, they need to win by 32 runs; if they score 140, the margin needs to be at least 31."

Sundar: "The problem is, even if India do manage to get to the SF, they will end up playing SL. All those who want an Ind-SL SF, please raise your hands."

Toss, 7.05 pm AB de Villiers has won the toss and South Africa will bowl. "Very disappointed, it wasn't part of the plan to be like this tonight. We've got pride to play for," AB says after Pakistan's victory knocked South Africa out. "Very disappointed, we've let a lot of people down."

MS Dhoni says he would have bowled first as well, because India need to win by a particular margin to make the semis. India are unchanged for this game.

South Africa have made two changes - Faf du Plessis replaces Richard Levi and Albie Morkel comes in for Wayne Parnell.

Craig: "I experience the normal Australian schadenfreude at knocking out the South Africans."

7.15 pm India need to beat South Africa by at least 32 runs if they score 160 (and by at least 31 if they score 140) to finish with an NRR higher than Pakistan's. If they achieve that, they'll knock Pakistan out, and the actual margin of victory will determine which of India or Australia finish on top. If they don't achieve that margin, Pakistan will qualify.

Kapil: "Doesn't look too great for Sehwag and Gambhir. Both are relatively struggling and trying to find form. They will be facing a full blown pace attack on a slowish pitch against a top team that has nothing to lose. Let's see what happens with the cards stacked against them."

Richard: "As a long time suffering South African, you can all say we not surprised. Wondering why Albie Morkel was not playing last 2 games, when quite obviously he was needed? Bahrdien scratched around, and Parnel is more miss than hit. Any other team would bat Albie at 4 or 5 EVERY game right?"

Ridhwaan: "For a change, let's see what SA can offer when there's no pressure ..."

Tushar: "Its very surprising to see India picking just one specialist spinner against SA. Who have struggled against spin throughout this series. Specially after seeing how much ball gripped and turned in first match."

Umang: "The only thats giving me hope is India's performance against SL in Aus when they did a seemingly impossible thing to give them hope coz of NRR. Though they ddin't make to finals finally, but they did their bit at least.."

Elvis: "Smart move by AB by electing to bowl. India has to earn the run-rate with their bowling, which is the weaker link!"

7.27 pm The national anthems are over and the final Super Eights game is minutes away. Sehwag and Gambhir to open for India. How will they approach their innings? They need to set a target large enough to secure a sizeable victory.

Leo: "Whoever complained about spinners being played - thats why they bowled their full quota. Watch India rack up to 160 now."

19.2

Kallis to Dhoni, 1 run, a full toss outside off stump and Dhoni doesn't place it well, hitting it to the fielder at long off

19.3

Kallis to Raina, 1 run, short of a length and Raina pulls towards the fielder at long-on, it reaches him on the first bounce

19.4

Kallis to Dhoni, FOUR, how has he hit that for four? Dhoni moved his front foot forward and towards the off side to sweep a full ball to the square leg boundary

19.5

Kallis to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni plays the helicopter shot but hits it along the ground to mid-on, only a single

19.6

Kallis to Raina, 1 run, OUT, the slower ball ball around off stump, Raina drives along the ground to long off and runs the single, Dhoni sprints back for the second, the throw is to the striker's end, where Raina dives full stretch with his bat outstretched. He was so far out that AB had enough time to miss the first attempt at breaking the stumps and do it on the second. Raina was just short

SK Raina run out 45 (45m 34b 5x4 0x6) SR: 132.35

9.00 pm India finish with 152 for 6. They started poorly and then picked up some momentum to reach a fighting score to try and win the game. Merely winning is not good enough for India, though. To qualify for the semi-final, India need to win by 31 runs or more. So they are defending 121. If South Africa make 122, India are out.

Time for me to hand over the commentary to Alex Winter...

End of over 20 (9 runs) India 152/6
     JH Kallis    3-0-24-1
MS Dhoni    23* (13b 3x4)      DW Steyn    4-1-26-0
