ICC World Twenty20 - 1st semi final

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Sri Lanka won by 16 runs

Dilshan will not be on strike. Tanvir will start off for Pakistan. Jayawardene to face. A wide slip in place

The national anthems are done. Big cheers as the Sri Lankan openers are walking out. The Pakistanis are in a huddle, many of them nodding away as Hafeez gives them a pep talk. Was holding his hand against his chest, as he was talking.

Ravi B: "If Pakistan really wanted to bring in Sohair Tanvir, it should have been at the expense of Shoaib Malik not Abdul Razzaq, who had a good match against Australia. Remember 2009 T20 final, he took 3 crucial wickets (including the wicket of inform Dilshan) upfront opening the bowling."

6.55pm The teams are making their way out for the anthems. The Pakistan national anthem first. Pakistan are represented well in the crowd today, as they have been through this tournament. A good turnout.

AZ: "I would have to say it is pretty unfortunate to not have Razzaq in this team. He did make 22 crucial runs last match."

Umar: "Dilshan has problems with left hand seamers - no wonder they brought Sohail Tanvir in...lets hope it pays...short bowling to him!"

"You'd have to say, [in terms of] the natural cricketers who have come through in the last 15 to 20 years, Pakistan is way ahead of every other country" - This is what Ian Chappell had to say on our show Time Out, in conversation with Harsha Bhogle and David Hopps. Hopps fancied Sri Lanka to go all the way, while Chappell thinks West Indies will take some beating if they get their bowling right.

James: "Very surprised Razzaq has been left out, given Pakistan's "variable" batting. Afridi needs to pull something out of the bag for me. He's been poor with both bat and ball in this tournament so far. Now comes the big stage."

Ravi B reminds us: "Today is the 16th anniversary of Afridi's fastest ODI century against Sri Lanka. If he does half as good as that, it will help Pakistan going a long way in reaching the final for the third time in four editions."

The women's World T20 semi-final happened a while earlier at the Premadasa, with England beating New Zealand comfortably.

Toss The captains have just exchanged their team sheets. Hafeez calls tails and loses the toss. Big cheers. Sri Lanka have decided to bat. Jayawardene thinks the track will help his spinners in the latter half of the game. One change, Akila Dananjaya misses out and in comes Rangana Herath. Hafeez says he would have batted had he won the toss. No Abdul Razzaq for Pakistan, he's been replaced by Sohail Tanvir.

6.15pm We're still 15 minutes away from the toss. No immediate threat of rain, we're reliably informed from the ground. Kanishkaa Balachandran has the preview for this match. Abhishek Purohit's in Sri Lanka covering this tournament and here's what he has to say about Pakistan's achievement in making this far. Andrew Fernando, our Sri Lanka correspondent, has this on the team's build-up to this match. And on a slowish track, with spinners expected to play a prominent role, the toss will be crucial and our stats-man Madhusudhan Ramakrishnan gives us all the relevant numbers.

Want a glimpse of what the interest-levels are like heading in to this match. Here's one

6.10pm Welcome one and all, we've reached the knockout phase of the World T20, and it's hosts Sri Lanka taking on Pakistan in the first semi-final. Expect a packed house in Colombo, and expectations are high among the locals. Pakistan, barring that defeat at the hands of India, have been impressive and that comprehensive win over Australia is a big confidence boost. Sri Lanka have looked good, but how'll they bear the weight and pressure of all the expectation?

KC Sangakkara c Shoaib Malik b Mohammad Hafeez 18 (10m 11b 3x4 0x6) SR: 163.63

Saeed Ajmal to BMAJ Mendis, no run, tried to sweep that past Raza Hasan at short fine but couldn't get it past him, no single

End of over 17 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 114/2 (RR: 6.70)
BMAJ Mendis    14* (15b 1x4)      Saeed Ajmal    3-0-27-0
TM Dilshan    34* (40b 3x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-7-0

150 will be competitive but Sri Lanka need to get there, Gul runs in

17.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, pitched on a good length outside off and Dilshan swings wildly and misses

17.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, low full toss on the off and he could only drag it to midwicket, just the single

17.3

Umar Gul to BMAJ Mendis, no run, yorker outside off and Mendis can't dig it out, excellent death bowling this, missed it and went through to the keeper

17.4

Umar Gul to BMAJ Mendis, 1 no ball, given out lbw, Mendis moved across to clip it square, pitched on middle and off, Mendis missed as he tried to play the shot, was trapped in front of the off stump, the umpire wants to check if it was a no-ball and replays show Gul has bowled a no-ball, not sure there was any part of the foot behind the line as it landed

freehit time

Sri Lanka would have liked Mathews or Perera to walk in at this point, but what can Mendis do now?

17.4

Umar Gul to BMAJ Mendis, 1 run, on a good length and he swings hard but can only get it as far as long-on, just the single

17.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, OUT, Dilshan goes! Almost yorker length and he failed to get it away towards midwicket as he was trying to do, seemed to strike him in line with leg stump and Taufel gave it out

TM Dilshan lbw b Umar Gul 35 (78m 43b 3x4 0x6) SR: 81.39

He made 35 but also batted time and consumed 43 balls. The big hitters now have only 13 deliveries to face now, they need to make the most of what they have. Replays show the ball would have hit leg

17.6

Umar Gul to Perera, no run, Oh Gul, superb stuff, yorker length and Thisara had no answer against that one, failed to dig it out, couldn't get his bat down in time and it didn't miss the leg stump by much

Just three runs off the 18th over, Jayawardene still hasn't taken his pads off.

End of over 18 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 117/3 (RR: 6.50)
NLTC Perera    0* (1b)      Umar Gul    2-0-10-1
BMAJ Mendis    15* (18b 1x4)      Saeed Ajmal    3-0-27-0

Ajmal to bowl

18.1

Saeed Ajmal to BMAJ Mendis, 1 wide, OUT, stumped, stumped off a wide, Mendis comes down the track and that was bowled wide, it spun away further and he failed to reach it, Akmal did the rest

BMAJ Mendis st †Kamran Akmal b Saeed Ajmal 15 (29m 18b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

Sri Lanka wouldn't mind that wicket, now for the muscle-men...

18.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, on middle and leg, turns it through square leg into the deep for a single

18.2

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, 1 run, short and turns away, slaps it wide of long-off, just the single in the end as Malik cuts it off in the deep

18.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, slog-sweep, does it with the turn, finds Umar Gul at deep midwicket, on the bounce

18.4

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, no run, mistimed again, Perera chases that quick one, turns away and he can only knock it back to the bowler

18.5

Saeed Ajmal to Perera, 1 run, pushed quick and pushed full outside off, drilled towards long-off for a single, Malik again does well in the deep

18.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, comes down the track and pushes it wide of Malik, who runs forward and returns a good throw to the non-striker's end to keep them to a single

End of over 19 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 123/4 (RR: 6.47)
AD Mathews    3* (3b)      Saeed Ajmal    4-0-33-1
NLTC Perera    2* (4b)      Umar Gul    2-0-10-1

Pakistan won't mind this at all, 150 unlikely now, that too with Gul bowling the last over.

19.1

Umar Gul to Mathews, FOUR, edged and four, Mathews made a bit of room to play that past point, got a thick edge to the third-man boundary

19.2

Umar Gul to Mathews, 1 run, almost finds the yorker, Mathews dug it out towards extra cover for just the single

19.3

Umar Gul to Perera, FOUR, smashed back, pitched on a length and Perera has bludgeoned that over the bowler's head, Gul did well to duck under that one and Umar Akmal tried hard from long-on to dive to his right but couldn't stop it

19.4

Umar Gul to Perera, FOUR, pitched up outside off and with mid-off inside the circle that's not the ideal line, Perera manages to chip that over the fielder for another boundary

Jayawardene, in the dug-out, pumps his fists

19.5

Umar Gul to Perera, 1 run, oh, Perera will feel he missed out there, full toss and he failed to pull that, mistimed it wide of midwicket for just the single, not above the waist

19.6

Umar Gul to Mathews, 2 runs, length ball and Mathews digs that out wide of long-off for a couple of runs

16 off the final over, but just 23 came off the four overs before that. With the depth Sri Lanka have in their line-up, they would have wanted much more than that, especially after the secure start they got and a further fillip with Sanga's cameo. They would have been aiming at 150, or perhaps even more, and it seems they've fallen a few short of what they would have liked when they set off. Gul was good, except for the final over, and Tanvir along with the spinners were economical. Pakistan will back themselves here, though it remains to be seen how the track will behave. A bit of dew there, so the Sri Lankans won't be too happy about that. But let's see how the second innings pans out. Sidharth Monga's report is being updated here. It's a turner. Kanishkaa will start off the second innings.

End of over 20 (16 runs) Sri Lanka 139/4
AD Mathews    10* (6b 1x4)      Umar Gul    3-0-26-1
NLTC Perera    11* (7b 2x4)      Saeed Ajmal    4-0-33-1
