Thomas Hayward was, for a time, regarded as one of the leading batsmen in the country, although he was a good medium-pace roundarm bowler and an outstanding cover point. With Bob Carpenter he helped to build Cambridgeshire into one of the leading counties, but he played for a large number of representative sides. In 1859 he made 67 and 68 for England against Surrey, and the following summer took 9 for 30 for England against Kent. In between, he toured North America under George Parr, the first major overseas trip, and joined him on a visit to Australia four years later.
