Match Day: SA's class should show against Afghanistan

Sri Lanka have named legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay as Lasith Malinga's replacement, after a knee injury ruled the fast bowler out of the tournament on Friday. Vandersay had been one of the two players who were withdrawn from the squad, 24 hours before the team left to India.

His inclusion now strengthens Sri Lanka's spin-bowling stocks, with Rangana Herath and Sachithra Senanayake already in the squad. There are only three specialist seam-bowling options following Malinga's departure, however, with Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Kulasekara and Suranga Lakmal the only frontline quicks on tour.

Vandersay made his T20I debut last July against Pakistan and has picked up one wicket in four T20Is so far. He was included for the Asia Cup recently but was unused, thanks partly to the the seamer-friendly nature of the pitches in that tournament..

@ AS7777 Hm interesting thoughts sir now i know that you have a logic behind that, love to see a left-arm chinaman Bowler in the ranks hope we see him sooner rather than later. by the way i have gone through a bowler his name is Malith De Silva a young left arm spinner who has impressed me a lot in his short career how about him(just for you opinion). As you said our batting is the major problem as i see most of the players in our ranks does not have the range of shots and the power needed for modern era of cricket. I see Chandimal is not suited for the format even though he was really good in performing domestic level. He & Thirimanna does to suit the format. so what do you think sir and what about your opinions. Whts you view on dropping Upul Thatranga

@KAVINDA1987 Vandersay is a good talent and like others said badly managed. Selectors might have been saw something of him and thats why he was selected. He is still new needs lots of things like you mention bowl with wet ball and under pressure. Another player I like to see with him is Sandaken. Right arm leggi and Left arm chinaman how about that?. My feeling is our bowling will not going to have a problem in the future but batting is the concern. If we are going to expect good performance like these every day from him, It won't going to happen, he may get thrash every now and then but need trust his ability until he become a good experience bowler.

Danushaka is far better than Kapugedara, He is always getting favors but his international figures are very poor. Anyway can replace him?

    @ AS7777

Sir you cant compare some ones most economical spell with others, that is the only time he has bowled like that. You should compare how often he can do this kind of bowling, even he bowled like that in domestic cup semi final against army sports club, on provincial final on the same ground with more experienced palyers his figures are 2 overs for 19 runs and no wickets. Im not impressed on Prasanna but niter on Vandersy there are many more choices we can go for for Ex - S Weerakoon , A Dananjaya , Malith De Silva , A Mendis , R Rambukwella where all of thease showed better performance and from in recent games with bat and bowl more than Vandersy.

Presanna didn't preform well in his previous chances and we have enough all-rounders. Legspinners have good advantage in India.

Good decision. But the senior players and coaching staff should back the young player and help him with his confidence. He may go for runs and will get panicked. That is when other players should support him and help him to stay in confidence.

@FOWMY, Prasanna should be there for his bowling and I cannot remember a single good performance by him. Vandersay is very talented but mismanaged.

  • fowmy on March 20, 2016, 3:28 GMT

I don't understand the basis on which Vandersay has been included as a replacement over Seekuge Prasanna who can bowl and bat well.

According to all these conditions sl has less chance to win today.
