The Big Picture

This match can be seen through several prisms: champions of the world v pre-tournament favourites, misfiring middle order v misfiring middle order, pace-reliant attack v spin-heavy attack, athletic fielders v incompetent fielders. Australia against India is a clash between teams with obvious imperfections. The loser goes home while the winner heads to Mohali, to play Pakistan on March 30.

If any of Ricky Ponting's men are relatively weak-willed, compared to the Australians of campaigns past, they have had plenty to help them focus in the days leading up to this quarter-final. An Australian paper reported Cricket Australia were going to discuss Ponting's future as captain. An English paper reported Ponting was going to jump before he was pushed. An Indian paper reported sinister allegations about Australia's game against Zimbabwe, prompting an angry retraction demand from the ICC. Whether they were planted to drive Australia to distraction is debatable, but none of the stories was substantiated.

Off-field dramas aside, Australia's progress in this World Cup was smooth at first - a comfortable win against Zimbabwe, a smashing one against New Zealand - and then uninspiring, when they laboured against Kenya and Canada. In each of those matches, at least one weakness was evident: a captain struggling for form, a middle order troubled by turn, spinners incapable of striking, and fast bowlers with wonky radars. All of these frailties were exposed by Pakistan, who ended the legendary unbeaten World Cup run on 34 matches. Australia's successes have been built around the opening partnership of Brad Haddin and Shane Watson, and the energy of Brett Lee. That might not be enough to topple India - but it might, for MS Dhoni's team is far from the shoo-in semi-finalist it was expected to be.

Before the World Cup began India's batting line-up was thought to possess the armour of God, their bowling was considered less formidable but effective in home conditions, and the fielding was known to be average. As their campaign played out, it became evident that the armour didn't fit the middle order - there were collapses of 9 for 29 and 7 for 51 - and the bowling, while adequate on helpful surfaces, was mediocre on flat pitches. The fielding has not been average. It has been abysmal. Slow anticipation, slower approaches to the ball, failure to cut off angles, and plain lethargy have allowed opponents to run at will.

For a long time during West Indies' chase, it seemed as though India would make the quarter-finals by beating only the three weakest teams of their group, which would have vindicated this forgiving format designed to prevent the upsets of 2007. But Zaheer Khan saved the day, as India expect him to. Zaheer apart, India have relied on Yuvraj Singh for an extraordinary number of wickets, as well as consistent runs in the middle order. The key, though, is at the top, where Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag have provided tremendous starts. But even if they do it again against Brett Lee and Shaun Tait, it may not be enough.

Watch out for...

The batting Powerplay was conceived as an asset for the batting team, an aid in the pursuit of fast runs. In the months leading into the World Cup, it began to be a banana skin, with wickets falling as batsmen resorted to rashness during the fielding restrictions. India have slipped spectacularly on it during the tournament, scoring 9 for 154 off 130 balls. During the batting Powerplay, India lost 1 for 32 against England, 4 for 30 against South Africa and 4 for 28 against West Indies, squandering positions of immense strength. Australia haven't mastered it either, making only 4 for 121 off 100 balls. Those five tricky overs could make or break a campaign tomorrow.

If the stakes weren't large enough to fire up Ponting, the talk about his captaincy and retirement will have strengthened his determination to end his form slump with a cathartic performance. Ponting has been dismissed by the short ball - a strength turned weakness - in this World Cup and by spin, a more traditional subcontinent susceptibility. His composure has also been strained. Eight years ago to the day, Ponting ended India's World Cup dream in Johannesburg with a century of frightening brutality. He plans to watch videos of it in the hope that it will help him reproduce something similar in Ahmedabad.

Sachin Tendulkar watched that World Cup slip out of India's grasp as the bowlers conceded 359 in the final. He was then dismissed in the first over of the chase. The Player-of-the-Tournament prize was little consolation. He has the opportunity to write a wonderful script tomorrow - a 100th international century in a victory that will dethrone the World Champions. But cricket, like life, is never perfect.

Team news

Virender Sehwag missed the last group game because of an inflamed knee and India are keeping news of his fitness under wraps. He batted on Tuesday and on the eve of the game as well, but Dhoni said they might wait as late as match morning to take a decision on his participation. If Sehwag does not play, India are likely to field the same XI that beat West Indies.

India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag/Gautam Gambhir, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir/Suresh Raina, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Munaf Patel.

Australia have had an unchanged team since Michael Hussey replaced his brother in the XI, and they are likely to do the same against India. The weakest links have been middle-order batsman Cameron White and offspinner Jason Krejza and potential replacements could be David Hussey and allrounder John Hastings.

"We haven't finalised our 11 yet. We'll have a bit more of a think about things this afternoon, make sure all our players have got through training well, with no injuries or illnesses," Ponting said. "There's a good chance that any of our guys could come in for this game. Coming off a loss last game wasn't ideal for us, and we have to have a look at what we think is going to be the best make-up and balance for the game tomorrow."

Australia (probable): 1 Brad Haddin (wk), 2 Shane Watson, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White/David Hussey, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Steve Smith, 8 Jason Krejza/John Hastings, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Shaun Tait.

Pitch and conditions

Australia played their World Cup opener at Motera, where they started slowly against Zimbabwe before accelerating to a formidable total. Ponting expected tomorrow's pitch to be similar to that one. "It was pretty much what you'd expect for a subcontinent wicket: a little bit slower, spun a bit more in the second innings of the game maybe than the first," he said. "We're going to send our coaches down late tonight to have a look at the ground and see if there's any dew about. I think it's supposed to be 41 [degrees] or something [similar], so it will be nice and hot for the boys out there."

Stats and trivia

  • India have lost their last four games in Ahmedabad. They batted first in three of those matches.

  • Brett Lee has 50 ODI wickets against India, the highest by an Australian bowler. Four of his nine five-wicket hauls are against India.

  • India have not won a game against Australia in a global tournament while chasing. Their last win against Australia in a World Cup was in 1987.

  • In 14 ODIs against India in India since 2007, Australia have won eight and lost five.

"People have been talking about the short-pitched ball a lot, and not to forget the best batsmen in the world don't like facing the short-pitched deliveries. One good thing, it's not something new to us. It follows us. Wherever we are, the shadows of short-pitched deliveries can be seen. I don't think it's a new strategy."
MS Dhoni hopes that familiarity will breed confidence when Lee, Tait and Johnson thunder in.

"Maybe we've just learned to keep our mouths closed a bit more. A lot of that chat hasn't really happened since [Glenn] McGrath and [Shane] Warne went out of the team. Hopefully, our cricket will do the talking on the field tomorrow."
Ricky Ponting on sledging and whether there will be plenty of it during the quarter-final.

India will win this game. All good things come to an end. Let's hope it's a great game. I expect it to go all the way, with AUS looking like winning comfortably, then throwing it away right at the end - a predictable pattern in most of their vital games in the last two years. That won't be all bad, as it's time to blood a new captain and a few new players.

Go Aussie oi oi oi. With the Hussey brothers in and the bowlers all firing Australia should win.

Think India has a slight edge over the Oz's. But you never know. Cricket is a funny Game. Love to see India and Pak in the Semis.

It all boils down to these last matches. No history of previous glory or talented players or best batsman or best captain is applicable any longer. None of the performances in the leagues or in the past year will matter. The momentum of this match will carry on to the final.

i reckon aussies will win QF as they hv much stronger team than india in every aspect in the field. india team is lacking in bowling dept and only relaying on zaheer khan as others r not putting their best in the game. even india score 300+ but there chances r less BUT u also dont know as its day game and whoever play his best definatel will come up with win. i also want to see pak vs ind semi final. Good Luck to all the teams.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 8:02 GMT)

let me ask a question to the writer of this article. which teams is flawless ?

1) India: Weak bowling/fielding. 2) Aus: Weak batting and lack of apetite to win. 3) Eng: Just can't win/ attitude problems. 4) Pak: Weak batting and pathetic fielding. 5) SA : Chokers/ Over reliance on Kallis (Kallis = 90% of SA team strength) 6) S Lanka: Just Mahela and Sangakara to talk about in batting lineup. And no spinners of Quality after murali.

So every team has weaknesses, we just tend to forget these when it comes to teams that have managed to win a couple of games in a row.

A team with a good day will win no matter what.

From high in the beautiful Nepali Himalayas - KATHMANDU ... I'm wish our Aussie cricket team god-speed and good luck for today's match against India. The defining difference between the two teams is the "never say die" attitude that the Aussies possess. Even in the darkest moments the Aussies seem to pull the rabbit out of the magic hat! We need another vintage performance from our Captain Ponting ... and some deadly "line & length" from our bowlers ... C'mon Aussie c'mon c'mon! I'm barracking for the Aussie team to win in Ahmedabad!

Australia will win, because of Tait, lee and johnson's pace, and the indian's pathetic batters. only good one is tendulkar, he is always relied on to do good. if he fails, which he will, then India fails. goodbye india. no world cup for u this year.

What do you get for pretending the danger's not real ?

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:52 GMT)

Australia needs to play David Hussey ahead of White...He gives you that extra efficient spin option, which can be a deciding factor in Ahemadabad....India needs to prove a point...One way or the other....Hoping for a cracker of a QF....

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:51 GMT)

come on india beat australia today we are so hungry to beat you in india in the semi's INSHALLAH

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:50 GMT)

i am confident that India will overhaul the aussies ; but to do it Dhoni must not bat up the order , nor in the middle order.. India's best chance to win will come only if he doesnt bat..

Its very big mistake from Dhoni that he didnt yet gave a chance to Sreesanth...dont mind his character but he can make the real breakthroughs at crucial situations............Dhoni will regret.... :(

Posted by 9for52 on (March 24, 2011, 7:38 GMT)

As a NZ fan, I have no dog in this fight, but I always like to see new blood in a Final, and as Aussie & Sri Lanka fought out the last Final, that means I'd like to see on this side of the draw an Indian/English semi. So, GO INDIA!

Posted by karthikeyan4142 on (March 24, 2011, 7:37 GMT)

india should open bowling wit ashwin having fine leg and short mid wicket and long on and sweeper cover. V can restrict their run flow in powerplay and v can get some 1 r 2 wkts.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:36 GMT)

Does India has any chance? An amazing opening pair of Haddin and Watson for Australia, while no seamer can bowl effectively for India in the first 15 overs. Ricky, the sleeping tiger was hurt and aroused by media. Lee bowling at his best, with speedsters Johnson Tait bowling at > 100 mph can blast India's so-called heavy weight batting line-up very easily. Added to that, Viru has a swollen knee, while Yuvi has stomach issues, and so on. Kohli, Pathan are shuffled so much that they don't even know whether they will play and where they will play. Raina is cool since he knows for sure that he wont play. Ashwin is exhausted waiting on side lines and expects more rest for IPL with Raina. Dhoni is more attacking in the media than in the field. India's best wicket taking spinner Bhaji is learning to contain runs. Sreesanth, Nehra and especially Chawla have all done enough to be dropped. Yuvaraj and Sachin can feel they have done enough. Sachin may want to reserve his best for next World Cup.

Posted by Eraj.Mehmood on (March 24, 2011, 7:29 GMT)

I hope India wins today, so there can be a Pakistan India semi-final! Now THAT will be a match were India's batting line-up will really be tested.. :)

Inida win the match and keep the world cup in India itself...don't miss it Indiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.........It's our chance

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:20 GMT)

Venkatesh Naidu. Take care of your todays match with Australia. It is to early to say india beat Pakistan in the semi final. Pakistan is the only team that can beat Aussies u cant do that even at ur home. It will be proven today. This is not an easy proposition to beat Pakistan in the semis. We are the team tailor made for final stages of any tournament. We play with enthusiasm and zeal we don't care who face us.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:17 GMT)

Should wait for the match to finish before jumping to conclusions before the game. Remember te 2009 World Cup first rounds in the Windies. !!

There is a only word for India - Win

Posted by aamed33 on (March 24, 2011, 7:11 GMT)

Shame these two giants are meeting in Q/F rather than in the Semis or the Final, and that one of these remarkable teams will be eliminated from the tournament. A bit like Brazil and Holland clashing too early in the football World Cup. India might find that superiority of Australian bowling attack against that of their own is the vital difference between the two oherwise well matched teams. Pity that they don't have a Lee, Tait, Johnson of their own, and rely too much on part time spinners to tickle a batsman or two out. But what a batting line up. May the most deserving win!

Posted by diri on (March 24, 2011, 7:08 GMT)

India are going to be knocked out today!!!!! They have the weakest bowling attack ever!!!! I have a feeling its going to be SA v Pakistan in the final

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 7:07 GMT)

Would love to watch an encounter India vs Pakistan. No matter who wins it will be a great game of cricket for the sub-continent.

It would test the nerves of the players as well as all Indian and Pakistani supporters.

So let us keep our fingers crossed and look forward to a great game today.

Posted by sajjad.kernel on (March 24, 2011, 7:02 GMT)

india has no bowling attack as proved in England,South Africa,Ireland matches.....why dhoni is reluctant to add fifth specialist bowler?....but india should be cautious cause the "fear of Australia" might easily strike them.... Australia --> Good batting team, better 5 bowlers, exceptional fielding team india -->very Good batting team, normal 2 bowlers, poor fielding team

Posted by simargill on (March 24, 2011, 7:01 GMT)

India will win today, definitely

in a knock-out game India MUST do something surprizing for Aus otherwise their bowling 'll not defend whatever total they 'll have on board.

If India could beat Australia they could beat anyside Australia is the toughest side. India has weak fielders. and running between the wickets too is also a problem.

Posted by anwarmeherally on (March 24, 2011, 6:28 GMT)

Aussies are defending champs, India is a wanna be champ. India will have an uphill battle to remove the current champ, when they win then they can claim a real accomplishment.

Posted by Nutcutlet on (March 24, 2011, 6:23 GMT)

This match is likely to decide Punter's future, as captain and as international player. A win here, even if his individual contribution is modest, may persuade him that he can continue as captain - and a score of, say, 70+ will tell him that he can hold his head up and continue in the side for a little longer. However, a lack of runs and a loss is extremely likely to bring down the curtain on an outstanding career. His captaincy skills will need to be razor-sharp today if Australia are to turn India over. Their glaring lack of spin options could well be decisive, although everyone knows that the Aussies will not go meekly. This is a match worthy of the final itself, with the added poignancy that Ponting's time may be called when the dust settles. I don't suppose the Indian fans will give him the respectful ovation that he deserves as thier supporters have much to learn about the bigger picture: how I hope they raise their game too!

lets go australia, may the best team win. especially on India`s mini cricket grounds... though helps their cricket players look good when it comes to the stats..

Posted by TheUparcut on (March 24, 2011, 6:06 GMT)

I think if India bats first,it should get a minimum of 320.If its chasing, then anything over 270 would be really tough because the nerves take over as the game gets closer. It is always good to bat first in a knock-out game. The team which handles the pressure better should win.No doubt that the Aussie legacy would be at stake,so will be Ricky's captaincy. So,they will come out hard at India.I feel Hussey and Pup hold the key because they are arguably the best players of spin in the Aussie batting line up.Haddin can play spin well. So,India will have to fight it out hard. The talk is about the top order of Australia. But,its middle order is not too bad as well.Make no mistake it is probably the best one day game in the last 5 years(post '438').

C'mon India.. u can do it...!!!!

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 6:01 GMT)

We know that indian batsmen can only play on flate pitches and they are always in trouble on those pitches in which some bounce on swing. in this match, the opponent have pace and swing and in sure indian batting will not be the same as we looked on the flate pitches. if india has to chase, they will be in big a trouble bcos india dont have bowlers like umer gul dariel styne, spinners like afridi. indian have only 25% chance to win this game.

our lower middle order batsmen must bat with application rather than throwing caution to the winds.against sa had india been say 200/5 at the end of 40 ovrs and if our lower order batsmen rallied around to post the same 296 we may have won,but due to the collapse there was an element of shock which worked in their favour. thus our lower order batsmen must have trust in our bowlers of defending scores of even 260 and should not try to hit all the balls in a quest of posting 300+ scores.

india is gonna lose so bad there bowling is average they rely to much on the top order and the crowds are useless as they only support one team meaning no pressure on aussie

Gotta laugh. The one guy that really worries me as an Ozzie is Ghambir, has a knack of turning up when the chips are down and can get under the boys skin. A guy that mans up when he needs to (and he may not be playing :). Otherwise, this is a no lose for the average ozzy, we think our team has played crap, because the selectors selected the wrong players, so if we lose, no biggie. India on the other hand... 1 billion...expectations... noone has ever won a home WC... it will be the funniest thing if India get tagged in this game. Cmon Aussie Cmon

India need to play good cricket to face Australian fast bowler's specially Bret, johnson

Posted by Mcroos on (March 24, 2011, 5:42 GMT)

its clear India will loose the match ..................because they mess up with 2 easy wins which was cost them to play againts the AUS and its all over for INDIA in 2011 WC.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 5:41 GMT)

only a supreme effort tonight will save ricky, the coach and the selectors skin. even then, it will be a different australian team next summer that faces india. lets hope for a great contest either way, but i expect the pitch to turn sideways from the first ball and the toss to decide the winner. given the prolonged group stage its almost a shame to see one of these teams (as an aussie) eliminated so early, why not less group cricket and more quality cricket this time of the tournament?

seems difficult for the INDIANS. But drawing inspiration from the warm-up game. India must request VVS Laxman to be with the team today. His presence will beat the Aussies today....

hopefully the wicket favours spinners like the wearing one in chennai it will put aussies under pressure against quality spin bowling.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 5:17 GMT)

Indian team Strategies: If Batting First 1. Sehwag and Sachin build up good partership. 2. Middle order should maintain the tempo. Not trying throw wickets even if score is good. 3. One batsman should be always at the crease upto 50th over. 4. Ashwin should bowl in death overs along with Zaheer. 5. Hold the nerve until last moment evn if Aussies batting going well. They are prone to spinning attack. 6. Have a better running between the wickets even if not getting the boundaries. If bowling first 1. Stick to the bowling basics. Not try with variety in lengths. Look out Paki's bowling attack. They stick to their basics only. 2. Put pressure on both the batsman on the crease not only on the weaker batsmen between them. 3. While chasing, do not think about the run rate rather think about building partenerships.

Best of luck to both the teams. Hope India will win today and meet Pakis in SF.

Aussies will win. Nothing else about it.

Posted by cond_cool on (March 24, 2011, 5:10 GMT)

Aussies are too tight in bowling..

I guess this will be a one on one match.. meaning, a team will dominate well the other..

What do you get for pretending the danger's not real ?

Posted by Malediction on (March 24, 2011, 5:04 GMT)

As much as I like to see Australia win, if they go all the way in this world cup, they will have won 5 out of a possible 10, and the last 4 running. That seems a bit ridiculous really. It's time for someone else to win it, or we might as well just rename the thing to the "Usually Australian Cricket Cup".

Having said that, this match could go either way. If India get off to a good start batting they could score a lot, and if they bowl well, the game is theirs.

On the other hand, if they lose wickets early, and their bowlers do not step up, they will really struggle.

This could be a classic. Let's hope so anyway.

Posted by Kami_Malik on (March 24, 2011, 5:02 GMT)

I think Indian team is more balanced then Aussies and we support India to win and out Aussies from world cup becuase it's too much boring to see Aussies champion again and again BEST OF LUCK INDIA see you in semi final thumbs up :)

Posted by jatheesh on (March 24, 2011, 4:58 GMT)

Even if India score 300 + runs, they can't defend it unless taking early wickets. So India Should attack from the first ball. Dhoni should shrug off his tag "Captain cool" and be aggressive. Being cool didn't work against England and South Africa.

Posted by pakichamp on (March 24, 2011, 4:57 GMT)

Hahaha When Aussies losses they strike so hard leaving behind the best teams in the world. Pakistan were the only one to defeat them and finish their streak if India is so Awesome they should win this game with a 10 wicket win or 200 runs win as Pakistan defeated them really easily and keeping in mind the fact that your no . 2 in ODI rankings.

I hope INDIAN batting and bowling wakeup this time..though if they beat Aussies today but considering indian form in this WC I believe Pakistan will be able to end the never winning streak of them against india in WC..

but hope to see Pak Vs. Ind. semi.. wat a game it would be...

Posted by johnathonjosephs on (March 24, 2011, 4:47 GMT)

One very important factor many do not think is the crowd... this is a QF and a high profile game AND in India...the stadium will be packed with Indian supporters just like the south africa game.... sad to say but if India bats first and they lose maybe a couple wickets in first 10 overs (especially if tendulkar is gone), I'd expect to see an Indian batting collapse that being said, i really think tendulkar will make century today unless one of the bowlers produces a gem of a delivery

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 4:40 GMT)

This is the right to show the Sachin effort against Australia in World Cup. May be this will a revenge game for Sachin after 2003 WC Final Loss. I hope India will win this match and will make pull stop for Australia's Victory

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 4:32 GMT)

The negative point of India is, they dont have spinner who can attack in first 10 over.Baju is the spinner who can hold the little old ball.India good option is to open with Zaheer and Yuraj.Because Yuraj not give too much flight and he delivered fast ball as well like Abdul Rehman doing for Pakistan. There is also no place for Pathan as well.He is not striking the ball and also not ball more then 4 overs in a match. So should include specialist batsman Raina or another spinner Chawla

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 4:30 GMT)

Australia can win only if they do the correct team selection... David Hussy has to come for Cameron White... John Hasting has to replace Jason And I would say drop tait and play Nanes...

My prediction the team batting first will WIN...!!

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 4:25 GMT)

India has star studded batting line up but australia has enough match winners to match and beat India . BCCI has missed a trick here, they should have postponed the IPL bidding of the Indian players for the end of the world cup, then the players would have really given their 100pc, and may be we cud hav seen munaf bowling at 145 kmph.

Posted by santro1112 on (March 24, 2011, 4:18 GMT)

I wonder why Shawag does not get injured during the IPL matches. Whenever there is big game he gets injured..

I think suresh raina should play instead of Yusuf pathan as he is agreat all-round player where as Yusuf path an is selected for his slogging. Raina can play to the situation. Yusuf just had a few lucky innings. The top three batsmen of each team and the batting power play will decide the game.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 3:39 GMT)

is dhoni keeping sehwag out of da game just because of pacers??? he needs to rethink his strategy, he's been in his worst form ever be it batting or captaincy! If he gears up with confidence, dea will be no match for india!!

India 11: 1 Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar,3. Virat Kohli, 4. Yuvraj Singh, 5. Raina, 6 MS Dhoni, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 R Ashwin, 11Gautam Gambhirl.

Start Bowling with Ashwin and medium pace kohli.

AUS 11:1 Brad Haddin (wk), 2 Shane Watson, 3 Ricky Ponting , 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Michael Hussey, 6.David Hussey, 7 Steve Smith, 8 Jason Krejza, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Shaun Tait.

Tough one to call. India didn't beat either of the other top two teams in group B and Australia didn't beat either of the other two top teams in group A. The difference in this game, I'm guessing, will be the pitch. It's going to be low and slow and take spin. Now which team does that favor- the one with three quick bowlers or the one with three spinners? India to win, and after they beat Pakistan they'll take on the reigning World T20 champions in the finals!

Posted by mysay on (March 24, 2011, 3:31 GMT)

India's poor bowling will be the reason this will be their last game in this WC. No matter what total India pose, Aussies will run it down, just as England almost did. India has spin, but not top quality spinners who can turn it a mile, which is the kind needed to really strangle Australia. However, Australia has fantastic pace, and talking 140Kmh + pace, and three of them. In the latter part India struggled against Daryl Stein and SA was victorious. So the outcome is almost written.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 3:23 GMT)

india don't think Australia is easy to defeat. have to improve middle order batting and bowling you look at other matches india played fall of wicket is not consistent. also fielding is very poor team india must learn fielding from bangladesh how quick to stop boundries. play for the nation this is your chance to lift world cup.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 3:22 GMT)

India should rout Australia comfortably, if you see how we did against them in bengaluru in a one-off warm-up match against them. But the fact is, we are not worried of Australia's form, we are worried of our own form. We can destroy ourselves like 9-29 or 7-51 stuffs.

Considering the current Aussie side, I don't think they are front runners for this world cup. As we can see some clinical performances by Pak, SA and SL I would not put my money on Aus. The result will not affect the world cup, but it will affect the future matches if India exit at this stage. As we know Indian crowd won't be very much interested in the world cup once the home team is out. We might have Indian victory here to keep the world cup momentum up and make the rest of the tournament interesting. If at all India wins, it will be a see-saw game.

All the best Team India.

Good luck India, --- Result--- we all know :-)

Posted by schnoggs on (March 24, 2011, 2:24 GMT)

Tight game either way, I agree with Babar's comments as Smith isnt a great batsmen at 7 and doesnt really bowl. ACB obviously see something in him that the public do, perhaps he is one of the few young half decent players coming out of Australia so they probably have to back some youth.

I think Cam White is horribly off form and would certainly drop him for Dave Hussey. I think it should be close and it depends on the pitch. Oz will struggle to face India's spin more than India will struggle to face Australia's fast bowlers. Whoever wins this will probably lose to Pakistan who are suddenly looking like the favourites!

Pakistan v SA final with Pakistan winning it...

Posted by Marcio on (March 24, 2011, 2:16 GMT)

India are going to win the game, and that's OK by me. We have won too many world cups, and our record against India is so one-sided in the WC (and ODIs in general) that its time to let them balance it up a bit. LOL. I predict a close game, which will swing around. AUS will look like they are about to win comfortably... then throw it away. This has been a recurring pattern with this AUS team over the last couple of years.

Posted by   on (March 24, 2011, 2:13 GMT)

I agree tomorrows winner has the best chance to win the world cup. In my opinion either for India or Aussie tomorrow is a big match ( a virtual final ) and for the winner the next match is easy. I never felt pakistan is a team deserve to play semi-final, either one of the teams will beat Pak easily. Especially Pak spin wont work with India and they are very lucky to beat Aussie in the last round match. My prediction is India/Aussie will face Lankan in the final.

Pathan is going to fire up today with Aussies for sure. That makes Aussies panic and create own graveyard.

Posted by T20man on (March 24, 2011, 2:02 GMT)

India are deserved favourites, but the Aussies can win this. Interesting stat about India losing their last 4 matches at this ground. Aussies should definitely play both Hussey brothers, probably at the expense of Smith (he is young so his time will come). They can get as many bowling overs from D.Hussey as from Smith, and I would certainly rather have Hussey in there for his batting.

Posted by Amol_Gh on (March 24, 2011, 1:59 GMT)

AUS wouldn't have come so far had, SA got that one run in 1999 and played to their best in 2007 and had IND faced them courageously in 2003. Now everyone has a Catching-Up to do with the Aussies. And a lot of it. And the process starts from today.

Posted by vulpesiangeisha on (March 24, 2011, 1:58 GMT)

Very new to the game...in fact this will be the third match I will have followed ...but as a fan of sport in general...I see it as very difficult task for India...not impossible....but difficult. It's hard to see a team with Sachin losing this against an unimpressive Australian side...but again a team like Australia... I think... needed the loss as a wake-up call. I think an India-Pakistan semi would be more exciting...and to lose the home crowd for the rest of the tournament would be ashame...but I think the Australians will return resolved for this match and have their chance at revenge.

This is the Best Time and the Best Match for Tendulkar to score his 100th International Century and thereby settle the scores, and bat Australia side out of the World Cup, 2011.

Posted by Monishjoshy on (March 24, 2011, 0:53 GMT)

Nehra is in poor form for the last 2 years, and he was given many chances to prove his point. Chawla was a flop in South Africa, but he was given 4 matches to prove his skills nevertheless he faltered every time, Why Sreesanth hasn't given chance to prove his bowling even though he has bowled well in South Africa and has better statistics than all of the other except Zaheer Khan for the last 2 years. He bowled well against New Zealand in the last home tournament, but I agree that he would be a flop in very flat and batting wickets where even a small boy can hit sixes, that doesn't make a bowler less capable, it is about smart and intelligent cricket, which he needs to learn. Dhoni shows lot of likes and dislikes for some players, But as the Captain of India, I support him but I wish he had no partialities and favoritism.

Posted by Vinod on (March 24, 2011, 0:49 GMT)

@Rizwan Asif Thakkar: looks like India and Pakistan both do this.. when Pak plays Aus.. most of us support Pak.. finally one thing common for India and Pak..

Anyways.. I think this match is going to be the one to watch.. if both teams play their best.. India will go thru.. :) I am not sure what the fast bowling hype is all about.. barring LEE who can be rattled.. other fast bowlers are so inconsistent they just have a tiny teeny possibility of troubling the Indians... we'll see what happens.. Watto and Hussey are the 2 pillars on 2 ends.. get them .. they're done!!

Posted by nirvana_1959 on (March 23, 2011, 23:49 GMT)

Sehwag's 2 300 came against furios SA and Pakistan pace attack. As evident from the last N outs he gets impatient against the spinners. The only team he may not like to face is out (Bangladesh) ;-)

Posted by Jason1979 on (March 23, 2011, 23:43 GMT)

Indian batsmen -- just do what you did in the first 35 odd overs against SA, bat sensibly after that, and you should have this one wrapped up! Best.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 23:35 GMT)

I think, India doesn't have a chance to win this match because they gradually went down in the all department particularly in the batting department.

Posted by ShankarKR on (March 23, 2011, 23:11 GMT)

I dont know why Aussies are keeping faith on SPD Smith again and again.

India should drop out of form pathan and bring back Suresh Raina into the team. If this happens and If India wins toss and bats first, India will surely beat Aussies tommorow.

Posted by ShankarKR on (March 23, 2011, 23:09 GMT)

Both teams are afraid of chasing scores. I bet who ever wins the toss will bat first.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 23:00 GMT)

All INDIA need to do is BAT FIRST. Open with Sach / Viru..score 100 in 15 overs. Send VIRAT at No 3. Try with Yousuf @ No 4. Allow Yousuf to take some overs to settle down and go for a Blast. Make 100 in the next 20 overs.Yuvi and Raina can follow.Take PPLAY between 35 and 40. Let Dhoni and Harbhajan play the hitter roles and not anchor roles.Dhoni MUST stay till the end to avoid any collapse. Make 100 in the last 15 overs. Score just above 300 would be a panic total for Aussies.

Open bowling with Zaheer and Ashwin. First change is Munaf for Zaheer. 2nd change should be Yuvraj and not Yousuf. Harbhajan and Zaheer should always be used whenever a wicket falls.

Put Watson and Ponting under pressure. Dont react to sledging. Stay Calm and Focussed. NO ASHISH NEHRA PLEASE. Bowling length should be Good and Full. Never Bowl short.

India shouldn't send their top players (sachin and Sehwag) together against australia. They should try sehwag and ghambir in opening and sachin no 3. for australia i think smith is totally useless, its better to include a specialist bowler or batsman to replace smith.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 22:46 GMT)

My suggestion is that if Veeru is not fit tomorrow then theres no point playing him in final 11 as it'll have more pressure on him to perform while being injured and other players will also be obsessed with his injury thing goin on in their mind. The players will again and again think of same question... whether Veeru will deliver carrying an inury. It'll be better to give such an opportunity to a fit player such as Suresh Raina who can be vital in the slog overs or take an extra bowler in the team such as Piyush Chawla who has dominated over the Australians in the past in their home also. Its a very clear strategy guyz that please dont take Virender Sehwag in final 11 if he's carrying an injury as it'll do no good to the team and will merely hit the entire team as a unit. Dont think that its a do or die situation and team needs Sehwag badly for it. Simply think that he is required for the crucial games after this match which will be of utmost importance too..

Australia won't win. They don't have the fire in em.

India has the ability and the passion, Australia will have to play out of their skin to even stand a chance in this match!

I don't really care, one of the big names will be out of the competition today. Good news for South Africa :)

End of world cup for India, get thrashed! What a pleasure it would be to see the Indian fans silenced and we want PAK v SL in finals :)

If INDIA wins today then PAK vs SL is the final. If AUS win today AUS vs SF is the FINAL.

Hope for the best matches.

Posted by Ozcricketwriter on (March 23, 2011, 22:23 GMT)

Hastings and David Hussey have to play if Australia are going to have any chance. Sehwag missing will make a big difference to India's striking power though Suresh Raina can score just as many runs, just that it'd take him a few more deliveries to do it. Sehwag missing may be a blessing in disguise for India, as it'd lead to a steadier start.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 22:09 GMT)

Ashwin,Raina and Kohli should play and Gambhir needs a rest.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 22:06 GMT)

there is no one else other than Sreeshanth who can irritate Ponting and keep him under wraps...it could be a psychological move in bringing in sreesanth in place of Munaf--i do not see a loss in this swap. one does not take a wicket but leak runs...the other leak runs and take wickets..sreesanth is better than munaf in these conditions.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 21:59 GMT)

Cameron in Australia and Gambhir are lucky to hang on to their spots. Both are out of form Cameron is a brilliant field Australia could afford to have him but Gambhir is a liability in the field

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 21:52 GMT)

Hussey needs to play in place of Cameron White, because he will do do what White (a supposed all-rounder) will not do, and that is bowl some good overs, in many ways he is the best off-spinner in the squad and is certainly a better sub-continental batsman than White or Steve Smith

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 21:43 GMT)

Fight fire with fire, bring in Sreesanth Whatever situation Australia be in, rest assured they will come out hard at the Indians. And that's where the fire in the belly will count. While Australia have never been short of that, it has always been in short supply for Team India. The answer to that could be S Sreesanth. The suggestion might raise a few eyebrows but it can't be denied that if Sreesanth can get his skill and brain to sync, he can douse the Aussies with his spark

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 21:41 GMT)

Today's match is a good match. If shewag cant play my suggestion is to take Raina in the team. Last match he did take a wicket in crucial time and good run out and a tiger like fielding. What else you need If he scores runs that is bonus for India. Against Australia we need to add batting stregth so that can help to attack Australia. With sreesanth we mostly leaks runs and even zaheer does bowl one end good otherend sreesanth is giving too many runs. We have won with sreesanth I cant forget not in india in South africa that is suitable for him. Home conditions good for raina. It is my suggestion to have raina in place of sreesanth. That is wise move. Thank you

Well, Ind has got a tougher match than anybody else, not including Pak as they got the least capable team to reach in semis. If Ind win this game, Pak will be in more trouble, they haven't even managed a single game to win against Ind in WC and on the other side, Aus will be more attentive against Pak. So, last match for Pak in semis. GO India Go!

Both team have few negatives in them! whoever over comes them and wins tomorrow will go on to win the world cup definitely! last chance for india to step up their gears jus 2 things, middle order bat sensbly! bowlers stick to basics! last chance for ausies as well same wid them middle order flaws and week spin attack!

Probably the only time I will ever support India in a cricket match. Only because I want to see a Pakistan-India semi-Final. Go India!

Posted by tapooori on (March 23, 2011, 20:27 GMT)

India can beat Australia only if their middle order get out of crowd pleasing mentality and if it can bring more variety to their bowling attack. So far India was able to win the matches on a wait-and-see basis. Means there was no comprehensive win. This is also the best opportunity, provided they beat Australia, to break the Jinx of host nation not able win a world cup title. On the other hand, Australia which has at least five or six ready-to-retire players would be going all guns blazing to prove that it still can win the world cup with the current squad. One more point the whole Indian team is balanced on four pillars. Those four pilars are Sehwag, Yuvraj, Zaheer, and Harbajan. These four players must click, same time, in every match If India is serious about regaining the WC title. Sachin, no doubt is a legendary figure however his contributions towards Indian victories are very less if compared with the contributions made by those four playes, solely or collectively.

I hope Munaf Patel gets dropped tomorrow..I never thought I would ever say this, but he makes me miss even bowlers like Dodda Ganesh and Laxmi Ratan Shukla..I know there are not many other options, but I would rather have Sreesanth in the team..Atleast he can get under the skin of the Aussies even if he doesnt bowl well..

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 19:55 GMT)

As a pakistan i supporter i think aussies should include both top class batsmen david hussey and white. On the other hand they should either drop smith or krejA. Smith is an average batsmen and he hardly gets to bowl so he is not a match winner. If they wana include a specialist bowler I would say include dirk nanees who has ability to swing ball along with pace. One thign for sure dirk can trouble india batsmen but hastings can not.

Posted by TejcricloverYOYO on (March 23, 2011, 19:31 GMT)

This will be a close match unless the Indian Batsmen crumble to pace and short balls or the Australian batsmen to spin. If any side batting first can get around 270 on the board it will win for sure.

Posted by ChuckyDoll on (March 23, 2011, 19:22 GMT)

My big concern is that if India hole out for a sub-par score of about 240 or 250, India may not have enough firepower to defend the total. We have been essentially a bowler short through the entire WC2011. We cannot expect the batting lineup to score 350+ in every single game. We will have to find a way to win some games with a sub-par total. Gary..... your thoughts ? Hope we can keep Gary for a few more days. If not, Thank you Gary for your time and services. It has been a fun ride.

No Sehwag.... No Win for INDIA..!!

Posted by Nampally on (March 23, 2011, 19:10 GMT)

Can India end a run of poor records against the Aussies as well as poor record at Ahmadabad. India stands a better chance if they play at full strength with Sehwag in the team. Johnson has threatened to try "Bodyline" bowling at Sehwag. But Johnson is no Larwood and Sehwag is no duffer either. There will be consequences. Although Ponting said We let our cricket talk for us. But Johnson has opened his mouth rather wide to play upon Sehwag's mind. No doubt Sehwag will be waiting to swing the right ball over third man for a Six. Lee(bowling) & Watson(batting) are the 2 danger men India has to watch. If they are kept off the score sheet, India has a good chance of winning. Ashwin will be a surprise spinner and in absence of Ishant, Zaheer should take care of Ponting. "Real Harbhajan " badly needs to show up. Sachin get your 100th century, Sehwag keep your promise of playing full 50 overs.Avoid Run outs because the Aussies are good in direct hits. Play to your potential India. Jai Ho!.

Posted by shameerpvt on (March 23, 2011, 18:54 GMT)

Its time to end the Aussie empire. This time, they go home early. Without star players, Ponting is almost worthless.

Posted by arjjun on (March 23, 2011, 18:50 GMT)

i think that india should give sreesanth a turn. just due to the reason that he gave away a few runs in the first match it does not mean he will repeat it every time. considering dhoni only played munaf patel in the 25th over last match, it is better to play sreesanth. zaheer khan is the only good bowler so it does not matter who is the other bowler. if they do play sreesanth there is at least a chance of him getting a few wickets. BUT india will win this match for sure no matter who plays

Posted by ElevenStars on (March 23, 2011, 18:47 GMT)

Sehwag playes or not. Need not to worry. Coz to beat team like Australia ,every player of TeamIndia should push hard and give their best effort. Indian Seamers should put the balls in right areas should not give any width or fuller length to Aussie openers Watson and Haddin, put these guys at their backfoot in the intial overs and let them earn runs hard. Dhoni should not experiment too much with his part timers against Aussies, let full timers should do their job first. Team indian batting is in good nick, and Ahmedabad pitch suits for batting so need not to worry against Aussie Seamers. All the best to both teams , As every team in Worldcup playing for their Country.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 18:39 GMT)

The QF would be a test of character for both the teams and particularly India who are playing in home conditions. I think there are two main tasks ahead of India. One not to loose their way due to collapse in batting order like they did in last three matches. Play a bit slowly during Power Play but develop partnerships. Second is concerned with bowling and that would be to contain the Aussie Batting. I believe wickets would follow if you can slow down the aggressive Aussie Batsmen. Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel should rise to the occasion. Yuvraj, Zaheer need to maintain their good form. I am banking upon Sachin/Sehwag to give India a good start against AUS Pacers.

Posted by   on (March 23, 2011, 18:32 GMT)

im goin for india,i actually support australia (when south africa or zimbabwe are not involved) but i think this indian side might just prove to be a little too strong for australia unless if the middle order ties its shoe laces

A good match up. I think the key would the Indian batsmen against Aussies pacemen. I hope the Indians include the leg spinner in the side as Harbajan and Ashwin are not wicket takers. The Australian should include DHussey for Cameron White. He can be handy with some spin bowling. Ponting should monitor Tait and Johnson if they falter he should be willing to use his part time guys. I hope its a great game. My money is on India to win.

Coolheaded technique like that of VVS was always successful against Australia. Wish we had him in the India team -- mainly because any game at this level is atleast half psychological.

Posted by samvarma on (March 23, 2011, 17:26 GMT)

Title for this article cannot be more apt. Though the priority for Dhoni & Co would be 'less talk and more action', BCCI should seriously decide the path for the future (if they have not decided already) on where they plan to take Indian cricket. The game should not be considered just as a money vending machine and hope they do not destroy the game. By looking at the quality of cricket , it looks like India's graph is on the slope. Once quality cricketers like Sachin, Laxman,Zaheer retire, it looks like a barren desert for us with none of the young breed displaying the commitment/skills to perform at the highest level. The priorities seems to have changed for the younger lot which is a worrying sign for India's 'national' cricket.Being a ardent fan of the game but more than that a lover of my country , I wish we develop a trend whereby younger lot prioritize playing for the country as their ultimate aim rather than concentrating on IPL and other money making ventures.

India must play the below team for a win against australia. Gambhir,Sehwag,Kohli,Sachin,Yuvraj,Dhoni,Raina,Harbhajan,Ashwin,Zaheer,Sreesanth. Sreesanth,Raina must be in the team as australian agression can be meet only with agressive players.Lazy players like munaf and nehra cannot do the job for india. Indian bowlers must try to take wickets rather than bowling defensively.

Sachin must bat down the order at number 4 to stabilise the middle order .He is a senior player and must show the responsibility and play the role which aravinda desilva played for sri lanka in 1996 world cup. He should play that role for the country and not for his records.

both teams are weak.. non of those teams are up to their best... Ausi's have not got the batting strength and bowling strength which they had as world champs, plus India has a very weak bowling attack and their batting is dependent on the first 3.. so its basically two weak teams fighting and the best team on the day will win it, no one can make predictions because non of them can be called as favorites looking at their last few match performances...

Aussies are going to come hard after their defeat to the first Semi fianlists and would want to win this one against India and settle scores with Pakistan by knocking them out tomorrow. Its not going to be easy though. Although lots has been said about Sachin and Ponting , I think tomorrows match is going to be more about Gautam, Virat, Harbhajan, Zaheer and Aswin (if he plays) and Haddin, Hussey,Jhonson and Hasting (again if he plays). I guess Australia will somehow sneak past India, I fear for our batting more than our bowling. Everyone knows what to expect in India bowling 30 odd good overs and 20 lottery, if part-timers exceed expectations it works in our favour, else our batsmen has to score extra 120-150 runs to be on the safe side, will our batsmen score those runs above par score, thats the key Someone has to play like Ross Taylor to score 100++ in about 30 balls either in the first or the last five overs, then we will can start thinking of SF

Dear Indian team, 1. Indian team has done a good fight in all the matches in this tournament with only one defeat that too very close. No one else 2. All players know their ability and strength thats why they are in the team INDIA. 4. I hate seeing the experts commenting the Indian bowling dept is not of the kind of a world cup winner. Tell me which team has a outscoring batting dept than INDIAn team . So when Indian 11 stands together they are threatening to anyone. The batsman will take out the pressure from Bowling and fielding dept. 5. Dhoni have good sense to use right person at right time at given point of time. With the available resource he is undoubtedly a challenging captain. 6. When our bowlers spots the line and length at what they are good at (irrespective of either it is six/dot/wicket) we are certainly at our best. Doesn't really matter to choose 11 from 15 all are good. Feel confident, bowlers will smoke out Aussies. Good Luck!

Posted by gooey_kablooie on (March 23, 2011, 15:37 GMT)

History is against India. Being an Indian I cannot see India lose this time. It will be heart breaking. This article, in my opinion, has exaggerated the bad side of India's performance this world cup. The fielding, by far, has been better than past performances. Almost all the catches taken. Runs have been stopped. The fielding in the match against SA was very very good. Still its not equal to say Aussies or NZ's fielding performance. As far as the batting is concerned, many others have had collapses. India's batting hasn't been sensible mostly due to the set batsmen getting out in the end overs and others trying for a high target due to a below par bowling attack. India need to be at their best tomorrow. Every run missed, every bad ball bowled will cost them. Hope Sachin doesn't play his last World cup game tomorrow. All the best.

Carn AUSTRALIA! Time to stand and be counted boys. I expect a polished and professional performance from our boys, EVEN IF it does not result in a win, professionalism is what Australian cricket is all about. May the best team win.

India / Aus whoever win this game gonna win the W'cup for sure as always the case in any ICC tournament for almost a decade now..This might well be the last ODI appearence for master blaster sachin tendulkar gonna miss him for sure...
