Twenty-eight years on from the match that transformed the history of world cricket, India recaptured the crown that Kapil Dev and his men first lifted at Lord's in 1983, and this time they did so in their very own back yard. An iron-willed 97 from Gautam Gambhir was matched for intensity by the finest captain's innings since Ricky Ponting in Johannesburg eight years ago, as MS Dhoni trumped a poetic century from Mahela Jayawardene to pull off the highest run-chase ever achieved in a World Cup final.

Against a triumphant backdrop at the Wankhede Stadium, victory was sealed by six wickets with 10 balls to spare, as Dhoni - who had promoted himself to No. 5 to heap extra lashings of responsibility onto his own shoulders - rushed through the gears as the victory target drew nearer. With 15 required from 17 balls, he flicked Sri Lanka's only true threat, Lasith Malinga, through midwicket for consecutive boundaries, before smoking Nuwan Kulasekara over long-on to finish on 91 not out from 79 balls, and spark the most delirious scenes of celebration ever seen on the subcontinent.

However, the final margin did little justice to the tussle that had preceded it. Even the toss ended up being disputed, as Kumar Sangakkara's initial call was drowned out by the crowd, but it was the ebb and flow of Zaheer Khan's day that epitomised the fluctuations of a compelling contest. Zaheer opened his account with three consecutive maidens and the scalp of Upul Tharanga in a peerless spell of 5-3-6-1, only to be clobbered for 17 and 18 runs in his ninth and tenth overs, as Sri Lanka monstered 63 runs in the batting Powerplay to post an imposing 274 for 6.

And India's day got much worse before the team's fortunes began to inch upwards. Virender Sehwag had hit a boundary from the first ball of six of India's previous eight innings in the tournament, but this time Malinga's slingers dealt him a second-ball duck, as he skidded a full delivery into his back pad. And then Sachin Tendulkar, for whom the script had seemingly been written, was drawn into a loose drive by a fast Malinga outswinger, having set the stadium on standby for instant history with 18 sumptuously accumulated runs from his first 12 deliveries.

At 31 for 2 in the seventh over, India were struggling to keep their toehold in the contest, and it was all too much for a faithless few in the crowd who turned their backs and set off for home. But Gambhir and Virat Kohli epitomise a generation that does not easily accept defeat, and their third-wicket stand of 83 laid the foundations for an epic turnaround. The prospect of a seam-friendly surface, allied to the grievous loss of Angelo Mathews to a thigh strain, had tempted Sri Lanka into four key changes to the team that had triumphed over New Zealand in Colombo, and with Muttiah Muralitharan lacking bite in the final wicketless appearance of his 19-year career, Malinga alone could not carry the day.

The hard-hitting of Kulasekara and Thisara Perera had been instrumental in hoisting Sri Lanka's total to such heights, but in their primary role as front-line seamers they lacked menace and were all too easy to squeeze as 119 runs came from their combined allocation of 17.2 overs. The newcomer to the squad, Suraj Randiv, caused a moment of alarm with his high-kicking offspin when Gambhir, on 30, was dropped by a diving Kulasekara at long-off, but as the innings progressed, his lack of guile proved costly. The decision to omit both Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath, whose combined efforts had been so effective against England and New Zealand, is one that will haunt Sri Lanka for years to come.

But this was a victory that still had to be grasped, and India found the men who were willing to do so. The 22-year-old Kohli, who was greeted with a stern word of encouragement as he replaced the outgoing Tendulkar, showed all the mettle for the big occasion as he eased along to 35 from 49 balls before falling to an outstanding return catch by Tillakaratne Dilshan, who dived full-length across the crease to intercept a leading edge. But it was Gambhir and Dhoni to whom the ultimate duty fell. Their 109-run stand was the highest by an Indian pairing in three World Cup final appearances, and even when Gambhir gave away the chance for an unforgettable century with a tired charge and slash at Perera, the result was no longer in doubt.

Gambhir struck nine fours in a 122-ball statement of indomitability, and both he and Dhoni required treatment for stiff backs as the sapping Mumbai heat took its toll. Dhoni at one stage looked so immobile that a precautionary retirement seemed the only logical response, but after some harsh work from the physio he resumed his stance and responded with another trademark filleting of the extra cover boundary, an area in which he scored six of his eight fours - three of which helped to blunt Murali's attacking instincts.

Both teams contained numerous veterans of World Cup final defeat, with no fewer than five Indians still remaining from the team that lost to Australia back in 2003, and as a consequence this was a match thick with performances that spoke of the wisdom of experience. Though each of the previous five centurions in finals had gone on to lift the trophy, as well as seven of the nine teams that had had the chance to bat first, Jayawardene had the misfortune to become an exception to both rules. His stunning 103 not out from 88 balls was proof that finesse has as much of a place at this level as brutality, but ultimately it was not enough to deny India their destiny.

Four years ago at Sabina Park, Jayawardene produced a supreme century against New Zealand to carry his side to their second World Cup final, but this was an innings of even more exquisite application. He came to the crease with his side under the cosh at 60 for 2 in the 17th over, having been throttled by Zaheer's supreme new-ball spell. But he responded with a tempo that scarcely wavered from a run a ball, until with Kulasekara for company, he opened his shoulders to power through to his hundred from 84 balls.

For an occasion of this magnitude, cool heads were the order of the day, and though his final figures did not show it, no-one was cooler in the opening exchanges than Zaheer. On his watch, Sri Lanka were limited to 31 for 1 in their mandatory Powerplay, their lowest ten-over score of the tournament, and the hapless Tharanga was restricted to two runs from 20 balls before snicking to Sehwag at slip, whose sharp low take epitomised a fielding effort that was rarely less than totally committed. Then, when he returned in the 37th over, Zaheer deceived Chamara Kapugedera with a beautiful slower ball that was driven to short cover, on route to equalling Shahid Afridi as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, with 21.

And yet, the speed with which his figures were vandalised was astounding. Though each of Jayawardene's 13 fours was a classy stroke in its own right, none was better than the last of them, an inside-out cover-drive to one of Zaheer's trademark outswinging yorkers, as he premeditated the late movement and filleted the ring of fielders on the off-side. The outright acceleration came from the other end, however, where Kulasekara made 32 from 30 balls before his sacrificial run-out led to a pat of gratitude from Jayawardene as they parted. And then, by the time Perera, who made 22 from nine balls, had sealed his onslaught with a dismissive thump for six over midwicket, the decibel levels in the Wankhede had plummeted.

But run by run, over by over, minute by minute, India picked themselves up, dusted themselves down, and turned the screw on Sri Lanka with a determination that a lesser group of men could not have begun to muster, amid the sure knowledge that several billion countrymen were investing all their hopes in their actions. And though he himself played just a walk-on part in the wider drama, it was Tendulkar who was chaired from the field as the celebrations began in earnest. "He's carried the burden of our nation for 21 years," said the youngster Kohli. "It was time to carry him on our shoulders today."

As a Pakistani fan I want to CONGRATULATE the Indian cricket team and your nation on your victory - You were deserved winners. In winning the World Cup you achieved greatness but with it you won the hearts of many Pakistanis across the border and that truly is a great victory. I used to see negative/nasty comments from both Indians and Pakistanis but now that has changed. Let us with good hearts outnumber the haters.... Once again WELL DONE TEAM INDIA!!!

An Amazing coincidence, In the process of regaining the world champion's title, India in their last 4 games defeated all former World Champions in the same order in which they become World Champions!!!!!!!!!

Gautam is one of my favourite player. What a fantastic inning from him at under pressure. And also Dhoni, young kholi ,Yuvi all were very impressive.Sachin is a god of cricket. All bowlers, fielders did a good job in the final.India was the most successful team in past 4 years.Their success began from T20 world cup and CB series in australia.Dhoni is a real cool caption.Good luck to dhoni and India team. And srilanka don't worry about defeat.you have magnificent players wish you also a good cricket future!

@jameswayne Indian flat pitches are the most difficult pitches in the world to bowl on. Any half decent bowler can get movement on english pitches. Just wait and watch we r going to destroy u the way did to u in 2007 series in Eng. SA (chokers) and perennial ashes buffs (england) cannot even dare dream a WC win....

Posted by Manesh on (April 4, 2011, 5:05 GMT)

Srilnaka were lucky enough to be in the finals. They got the chance only because NZ beat SA. And they never defeated any big threats like Aus or Pak. And when it comes to face a good team, their weakness exposed. thats all.

I somehow get a feeling this will be Yuvi's WC, and this will be the best tournament for him and India. I wish all the best to him leaving the past behind. He has not fired well and time he will do it in WC. All the best Yuvi n India

Total team effort and excellent. Gauti / Dhoni / Kohli what an innings under pressure

This is the turnaround may be for Indian domination in ODIs.

Posted by Harry on (April 3, 2011, 20:25 GMT)

This turned out to be the best tournament for India and Yuvi. Having said that, Team India has made every Indian proud!!! At 31/2 I felt India can win only through some miracle but what an unbelievable performance from the deserving Champions!!! No words can express their achievement. India truly deserve this!!! Those 97s, 91s, 33s by Raina, 35s by Kohli, and those wickets by Zaks, Bhajji and the bowling unit all equate to centuries looking back at it.

Congrats Cheeka for being an instrumental part of both of India's world cup triumphs. As a born Lankan, it was sad to see SL losing a cup final for the 2nd time. However, the reality is that the Lankan team has provided it's fans much more than what they've come to expect over the years. If you consider the available talent pool and resources & funds available, what SL has achieved in Cricket tournaments is nothing short of amazing. Well done boys!

As a man of Pak.origin, I congratulate India for thier world cup win. Even though there were many equals, they deserve this cup . Simply bashing India as a fluke or match fixing, every times it does well is highly unsporting and a bit too low. Cricket still is a Gentlemans game thanks to people like Sachin. Let them enjoy this moment.

A very good observation indeed!!! Yes, the Vice Captain kick starts the tournament with a first ball (of the tournament) FOUR against a co-host and the Captain goes a step further finishing off the tournament, as worthy victors, with a six, against another co-host. What a co-incident!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being a Pakistani Cricket fan, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Indian nation on becoming the World Champions. Yes, I was amongst the billions of people who watched the whole match and enjoyed it immensely. It was a great team effort and India's fielding was outstanding to say the least. It was a great team effort and MS Dhoni was brilliant with the bat and as a leader. Well done and enjoy your success.

Can we have a look at Dhoni's stats in finals. Must be better than Sachin's

Posted by Dru on (April 3, 2011, 12:05 GMT)

India came in as favorites and showed why on the day of the final. They played what was a near perfect game in all 3 facets. The chase was clinical and risk free and in the end well under control. The target was challenging as was the circumstances and the chase but India were simply too good and all credit to them. For SL they played well to set a good target and Mahela was all class but just didint have the answers on the bolwing front to squeeze the powerful Indian batters. There just wasnt any real threat to the Indian batsman and even a target around 300 wouldnt have been safe. Suffice to say if India play at that level not many teams will even get close to them.

( First delivery of of the tournament went for four, hit by Sehwag "vice captain" and the final delivery went as well to the boundary even better this time for a six offcourse hit by Dhoni "Captain of the Indian cricket team" isn't it a coincidence?) :)

@Ali_Clark, there is so sentimentality at play here. It's just a statement of fact and Virat Kohli summed it up the best. And, yes, even though he was below his best towards the end of the tournament, don't forget that he played two crucial knocks of 53 and 85 in the quarter final and semi final. Le't not forget too that he ended up the second highest run scorer of the tournament at 482, just 18 runs behind Dishan at 500. And, his runs were made against tougher opponents than Dilshan had to face. So, he played a very big part in getting India into the final in the first place.

My heartiest congrats to India for winning the World Cup.India superbly executed a run chase of a formidable target. The team had peaked at the right time and inspite of the loss of Sehwag and Tendulkar early fought with the spirit of lions.Gambhir batted in amost disciplined manner and Dhoni simply rose to the hour with barrage of stroke-making.The fiery spirit they have displayed in the last 3 wins show the capabilities of this team and hpw pressure brings out the best in them.It was heartening to see the midle -order risining to the hour and the metamporphosis in the bowling atack which seemed impotent in the early stages of the cup.Above all India showed how much the game is in the mind.

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 3, 2011, 9:09 GMT)

Well done India. Well done Dhoni,Gambhir and Kholi and in bowling Zaheer. Fielding was very good. Despite a shocking start, India deserved the victory and the Cup.For Sri Lanka, Jayawerdene stood tall and played a classic knock and was a treat to watch. Dhoni proved himself to be a worthy leader and came good at the right moment and occasion.Sri Lankans should blame themselves for their poor team selection. Sentiments apart they should have retained Mendis and Rangana Herath against Rendiv and an injured Murali .Sreeshanth was a bad selection but Dhoni managed to get away with it !!

The news papers earlier in the day y'day had some startling predictions by the Astrologers of an Indian win in the WC 2011, but one prediction went one step further. This Astrologer had predicted correctly that a minor incident would occur which would be resolved quickly and that India would win the WC. Now can anyone doubt predictions of Indian Astrologers?

Truly classic contest in the WC 2011 final between two equally balanced teams. Everything went right for Sangakkara from winning the toss, batting first, posting 274/6 and then capturing two important Indian wickets for just 31 runs. A captain couldn't have asked for more. But Dhoni, in previous press briefing had stated India had not peaked to their potential. If he pulled a rabbit from under the carpet in the form of Nehra in SF against Pakistan, the surprise this time was promoting himself up the order. What a correct decision it turned out to be and what a way to finish the final by clobbing the seamer, who had done all the damage to Zaheer's bowling analysis earlier, over the ropes for a six!!!!!!!. It was ironical that in this world cup winning team, there were two members from the two junior world cup winning teams. Yuvraj from the Mohd.Kaif led team & Virat Kohli the captain himself of the second team. Hearty congratulations to Dhoni & Co. for this win. They will miss Gary.

When SL sit and do a postmortem of what went wrong for them to lose, it is all with them even before the match started. If you want to contain a strong Indian batting line-up you need a minimum of 300+ on the board and you need at least 3 good bowlers. Knowing that they had only Malinga and Murali who can be a real threat, they should have bowled first. Second is the wrong selection of team. Nuwan, Thisara are not great pacers and never had they been a threat in the past to India. They should have played Herath or Mendis and also shouldn't have played Randiv. So psychologically they lost the battle even before the toss, on seeing the SL team names Dhoni would have felt so happy that SL didn't have a incisive attack. And third thing where they exactly lost the match was when they allowed Gambir and Kohli to settle. And once India recovered from 31/2 to 90/2, India had already and SL had lost. Sangakara should have allowed Malinga to bowl 2 more overs. Congrats my Country !! Superb !!

Cricket God who wait for this moment more than 20 years...... I proud to be Indian and Proud to hv player like Sachin....specially for his humble attitute with common man.

In all world cups and championship games of all games and sports (soccer, cricket, NBA, MLB, NFL, tennis, golf, Olympics) including today's 2011 World Cup, there may be few shocks during the tournaments, but ultimately only the BEST and the most deserving team/player lifts the cup. There is no exception to this rule, and this was no different in Cricket World Cup when WI won in 1975 and 1979, India in 1983, AUS in 1987, PAK in 1992, SL in 1996, AUS in 1999, 2003, 2007 or IND in 2011.

CHAK DE INDIA. We deserve it. No doubt India is the best in the world. Proud of you boys!!!!!!!

Posted by Sr on (April 3, 2011, 6:13 GMT)

I felt a bit guilty after winning against AUS (who were a weaker team than in past) and PAK (who gave us lots of chances with their poor fielding). But after today's India performance, I am sure the best team won the Cup. We proved that we have the best batting, and a vastly improved fielding and bowling side (based on the the QF, SF and final games) and that makes me feel that we deserved to be the winner ahead of Sri Lanka and the other favorite South Africa. South Africa comes very close (may be even ahead of Ind) but it is not just about ability to win, but also the determination and desperation to win, and winning when it really matters and ultimately the who deserves to be the winner.

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 3, 2011, 6:03 GMT)

I am a Pakistani and I love Pakistan Cricket team but I have no regrets or shame in saying that India played very well throughout the tournament and they truly deserved it :)

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 3, 2011, 5:56 GMT)

While it is indeed a great performance by Team India, they badly need lessons in public relations. Both Afridi and Sangakarra complimented Team India and our nation for the hospitality but on the contrary,Dhoni never said a word about the spirit and the excellent contest given by both teams. He did not even acknowledge their existence in both matches - it was just a prattle about his misreading of the pitch and about probable questions being asked on Ashwin's non inclusion and his being promoted above Yuvraj. Shame on our captain for not proving to be a good ambassador of our nation. There was no mention of the leaders from Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and as well of our own PM and President's visit. It is highly imperative that Dhoni and all get a training on Public relations and being gracious in victory as well as in defeat. BCCI's treatment of Srikkanth and co in Mohali and as well,in Mumbai also leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 3, 2011, 5:54 GMT)

Look at the Indian team performance: 1.Only team to reach in semi Final from Group B is India. 2.India beat all the top 3 teams in Group A Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Quarter,Semi and Grand Final. 3.India record in ICC WC 2011. (P:9 W:7 L:1 T:1) The loss and tie were the close ones rather India gifts the win to opponents.

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 3, 2011, 5:51 GMT)

MS Dhoni is only captain who read the Indian cricket team very well. That is why he always do experiment in every match and the same will become turning point of the game. Well done dhoni & co, you put Indian in the Himalayas so that entire world can see you for next four years. The only successfull captain in the current cricket season is MSD. Starts from Twenty20, DLF IPL, Champions Trophy, Test No. 1 and now the biggest occasion ICC One day Interanational championship 2011. It is time to celebrate for the entire nation. "Proud to be an Indian"

After listening to the humble and very sportive comments from the losing captains against India - Ponting, Afridi and Sangakkarra, I feel it is not just India won today but World Cricket has won. I never felt so proud of this game. And of course with India's win today, crickets spread in more than 100 countries, T20 format and other changes happening, cricket WILL dominate the world sport (both financially and in its appeal) within a decade. Its appeal and acceptance in USA is probably the critical mass it needs to take this game to a whole new level in terms of perfecting this game in every aspect - perfecting the technque from a scientific approach, producing players with muscle, fitness and technique, finance, worldwide broadcast of highest standards etc., which I am sure will happen with India and US now doing business together on many fronts including sports business, and after which it will surpass FIFA, NBA, MLB, NFL, Olympics and anything else out there.

Well Done Team India, Played like true Champions against a very worthy & professional Team Srilanka. Dhoni has shut up a lot of his critics like only he can, in actions and words, a very inspirational leader, if at all Sachin decides to retire, India will have another "Cricket GOD" to emulate in MS Dhoni. Team India has also shut up all the Australian commentators and ex players who claimed that somehow Sachin was a lesser legend because he has no "World Cup" trophy. Looks like Team India has, in stroke cleared the picture about who is the best Test and ODI Team in the world too. Congrats to the Entire Indian National Team, the support staffand all its true Fans

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 3, 2011, 5:39 GMT)

Congratulations to Team India & all Indians. The wait was fruitful & the victory was SWEET...!!!!!

But one question is eating my brains.. Where was the so called Champion bowler Muralitharan when his team needed him the most.

Why he did not bowl along with Malinga in the last five overs instead of Kulasekara????

Just think then; Is this man a real Champion???

Posted by Puneet on (April 3, 2011, 5:38 GMT)

Congrats to the Indian team for winning the WC.

@Vishnurao - Well, undisputed test No.1 --obviously not, Undisputed ODI champions - yes...And teams that wielded more power were Australia of mid-nineties to late noughties - 12 years and 34 match unbeaten streak in WCs, and 2 16 consecutive match winning streak in Tests..As for being 60 overs/50 overs champions, well the format remains ODI, so fail to understand the logic of differentiating between 2 very good One day WC wins.

Posted by Shehan on (April 3, 2011, 5:36 GMT)

Poor selection of the team for the finals cost SL the World Cup. It is a big question mark why they played three off spinners in the same team (Murali, Randiv & Dilshan). Dropping Mendis from the final was big mistake as he brings more variety to the bowling attack. Sangakkara's head drop even before the game finished, which is a very bad thing to do as a captain. Although Thisara and Malinga brought SL back in to the game by some good bowling in the latter overs, Sangakkara wasted it by choosing Kulasekera to bowl 47th over, which practically ended the contest. Congratulations to Indian cricket team, well played.!

Posted by chaminda on (April 3, 2011, 5:35 GMT)

well done India. you did very well in the crunch moment. Sri lanka didn't have the will or fire power when India batted, specially when ghambir and dhoni were doing very well. as a sri lankan feel sorry being runners up on two consecutive world cups. but we were beaten by best teams on both occasions. Indians planned the chase well. have to admit indian batting was world class as they didn't stumble after 2 big guns fell cheaply. new lads showed how to do it on the big occasion. this time Young lads from India did all the work. Indian future is very bright. But sri lankans will find it difficult to fill the gap when 4 top order batsmen who are more than 30years old retire one day. only tharanga from the young generation fared well in the world cup. anyway congratulations INDIA!

Posted by Vineet on (April 3, 2011, 5:28 GMT)

Finally, we win it! Was afraid we'd repeat 2003, but we didn't, not with the bat at least. Gambhir deserves as much praise as Dhoni for seeing India through tonight. They should've both received the man of the match award, but that hardly matters now. We won! We're the champions! And spare a thought for Sril Lanka. This is the second final they've lost in consecutive world cups. Well played, Sri Lanka! Given the unreasonable Indian fan I am, I probably say that only because India won :-P

It was a tremendous victory not just for India but for the Trinity of India Pakistan and Sri Lanka. If India's batting was wonderful, Pakistan's bowling as always was brilliant. Sri Lanka remained the crafty allround side. I really wish that the ebullient Pakistanis are back in the IPL soon even if they cannot make it for the tournament that is due to start in just under a week. Now that the two governments have actually broken bread over a World Cup semi final the IPL should cash in by inviting some of the Pakistani stars as well. I wish them the very best in their endeavour.

A great victory by the Indian team. I remember how disappointed I was when we lost in 2003, and I was only 8years old then. The best thing about this victory is that we didn't go about the tournament thrashing everyone. We stumbled and struggled in places, but came out on the top in the end to win the Cup, which makes it all the more special. But on the other hand, a great knock from Jayawardene, who came to the party when it mattered the most, and a disappointing farewell for Murali, but he has been a true champion, and will remain one of my most favourite cricketers.

India shows its TRUE colours..finally!! The men of steel, grit, determination and character won it for India, most of all by the man who lead the team from the front, M.S. Dhoni. It was a great game of cricket, India picked themselves up from down and out to the Glory by showing mental toughness, cool charecter and true application to achieve a successful outcome. Dhoni's innings was a gem for all its glory, it was a classic that will be remembered for a long time to come, because it is filled with such varied hues of discipline, responsibility, toughness, cool temperament, skill in the job one is perfoming and adapt to the siutation's demands and stepping up and see to its successful objective. I haven't seen such a glorious innings or play from a cricketer for a long time. Hats off to you Dhoni...

I tip my hat to Gautam Ghambir whose fabulous play, after the early demise of our top 2 batsmen propelled India onto it's ultimate destiny. Also, no finer a captain then Mr. M.S. Dhoni nor will we have the likes of a Sachin Tendulkar for a long long time.

The best team has to win! The best team has won! Congrats, Team India and well done MS Dhoni, the coolest captain since Arjuna Ranatunga. What went wrong for Sri Lanka? Sri Lanka Cricket, Aravinda De Silva and Kumar Sangakkara owes an explanation to SL fans and cricket fans all over the world. Kumar should know that in Sri Lanka, when cricketers go begging for catches, we call them catching frogs. What a woeful display of fielding and catching. On that account alone, India should win and rightfully, India won. Who made team selections for the WC final in the SL team? Who decided to bring in Kapugedera, Kulasekera and Perera? Who thought of bring in Vaas and put him on the bench? God only knows, amen!

I was equally impressed to hear Sangakkara praising the Indian team and he was absolutely gracious on the defeat and let down by our Indian team failed to mention one word about the Srilankan team, no courtesy, no sportsmanship, really bad media skills.

Can't help praising Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli for their sensible innings and very important partenrship. 31/2 with Sehwag and Sachin gone, It was high pressure nut the two young guns carried India firmly on their shoulders. Feeling proud as an India. Thanks Team India. You rock.

Congratulations to Indian team . Dhoni played a captain's innings to compensate for a few things he could have done differently to restrict SL to a total of < 250. Number of similarities between both captains - picked players brought in as replacements instead of bowlers who possessed variations and operated with a defensive mindset. With SL's top 3 scorers dismissed, Zaheer was not brought back to try and reverse swing with the old ball, instead Sreesanth and part time bowlers were in action which allowed lower middle order to get set and launch big hits. SL did not attack with Murali after the fall of Indian openers and there was no attacking field set to stop the flow of ones and twos.Result - superb knocks from Mahela and Dhoni. It was more like SL middle order vs. Indian middle order batsmen and India ofcourse won that contest in the end.

well played india . I dont agree with many indian fans here insinuating that the most deserving best/strongest team in the world won the cup. I am convinced the best team is South Africa. india pretty much lucky SouthAfrica had a sudden unexpected bad day in the knock out stage.

Finally the drought is over...Thanks TEAM INDIA....you make us proud and its really honour for an Indian.. You proved and showed the whole world why and how we deserved it... I'm speachless what a moment....thanks MS and whole team. This is really for you Sachin...the GOD of Cricket..

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 2, 2011, 23:23 GMT)

I started cricket because of Sachin. It was something that the GOD of cricket has always wanted. I am sure with a much better team he could have won us the 1996 WC. Today is his day, for carrying the hopes of a billion people on his shoulders who want him to hit a century in every match and win every match for them. Dhoni and his men have done every Indian in the world proud. I study in the US and the euphoria was nothing different from India. That's the beauty cricket has done to every one born in India. Thanks a lot guys. You truly deserve it. Yessss....We are the champions...signing off, A Proud Indian

I am a Pakistani, but i am really happy for India, they deserved this WC, Sachin deserved it. All the greats in the game had one.

This WC isn't simple WC, it'll determine future of the cricket and believe me in India there is a lot of passion and love for cricket. So bad tho, that we Pakistanis can't play in India.

Nice Job India, Nice Job Sachin and Zaheer (*Zaheer is fabulous and greatest bowler of all times from India*)

Enjoy this victory India,

Peace to everyone.

Pakistan will win next world cup InshaAllah (If we drop Kamran Akmal !!)

Posted by William on (April 2, 2011, 22:59 GMT)

I mean no disrespect, but why is everyone concentrating on Sachin? He didn't carry the team on his own throughout the competition, and in the last 2 games, has been well below his best. I understand the sentimentality, but is it not a bit of a one-eyed view....?

Well done Indian team and the support staff. You guys deserved it from word go. the passion and desire was there to see. I am more happy for Tendulkar who finally gets what he deserves the world cup. Man with his class , records and passion without a world cup would of been sad for cricket had he retired without one. So well done from neighbour here :)

Congrats team India from Seattle, USA!!! A theatre full of people here were cheering every stroke on the big screen! I was 13 when Kapil's devils hoisted the trophy -- this win was more emphatic and more enjoyable. Fantastic performance by Dhoni, Gambhir, and co. Excellent performance by the Sri Lankans too -- thanks for an enjoyable game! Great game and sportsmanship the other day by the Pakistani side and the fans here on cricinfo. Looks like the era of South Asian dominance in cricket has begun!

Laugh, scream, cry, laugh, cry, jump, sing, laugh.... OMG! sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy!!!! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!... Yuvraj and Kohli's comments sum it up so well... KOHLI- "Tendulkar has carried the burden of nation for 21 years; It was time we carried him. Chak de India!"... YUVRAJ in an earlier match had mentioned that he ...wanted to win the World Cup for a "special someone." On Saturday Yuvraj revealed that the person was Sachin Tendulkar... Thank you TEAM INDIA. Thank you SACHIN!!!!

I feel sorry for Sri Lanka as I've wanted them to win since England got knocked out. However, Kulasekara and Perera weren't good enough and leaked runs. When India needed 27 from 24, and Kulasekara came on, I thought that was a mistake from Sangakkara. I would've much rather seen Murali bowl, as 27 off 4 overs from Murali and Malinga would have put more pressure on the batsman than Malinga and a bowler who's been hit around the park for most of the match.

At the end of the day though, I think the best team won, although I think the result could've been different had Mendis played instead of one of the medium pace bowlers, or if Kulasekara hadn't bowled at the end.

And Dhoni is undisputed best captain of this era and i surely thought that he could do this for india inspite of many criticizes him for his gambling experiments but now all those wud realy have to shut as ravi shasthri said in the post match presentation. His experiements did pay off, although it was not a good idea to draft Sreeshanth in to the side whch was done against the will of dhoni and garry, dhoni wasnt wrong to get him to the final ahead of Ashwin becoz SL will play spin well just like the way Indians did today but sree couldnt capitalize on the opportunity. 274 is definitely a winning score had Sanga didnt go thru with major smart idea of playing 4 changes. He tried a dhoni but it wasnt dhoni. Dhoni used Ashwin when it mattered & won two important knock out, read the pitch well and did his homework. It is something we shud really appreciate him for. Folkz, he has done it ofcoz it wont b possible without this wonderful team work but dhoni made them blv. Contratz

A wonderful finale to an unforgettable world cup. And who in world cricket is more deserving of a world cup than Sachin Tendulkar, without doubt one of the greatest batsmen of all time? But what should be most encouraging for Indian cricket is that this game was not won by Sachin or Sehwag, it was won by their young guns such as Gambhir. Sri Lanka were the form team of the cup, they played well against all opponents, while India were at times a little shaky. But India fought through, and were deserving winners. And one thing I have noticed through this world cup is that all those who questioned the brilliance and relevance of ODIs seem to be strangely silent.

Indian Team Has really played really well during the tournament... Heartly Congratulations to all Indians and all people who has favoured inida during the WC 2011. MSD used his team in a perfect manner... We should be thankful to allIndian players and specially Sachin, Sehvag, Yuvraj, & Zaheer who brought Iindia in the Final and at last Dhonin & Gauti performed their best of the tounament in WC Final..and we won the WC 2011. But we ahould also thankful to DADA (Saurav Gangully) who has given his best to make a confident Indian Team and also given confidence to team players and indian people as well that India can also win the world cup as Gangully's Team has reached in WC Final in 2003. Gangully gave us right to see a dream to win a WC and Dhoni did it and he makes that dream come true and India Won the WC 2011.

Thrilled for our legend Sachin......he may have missed out today but his performances in the earlier matches led us to the final. Maybe he ought to retire from ODI's now to prolong his remaining Test career.Wot a wise tribute to our little master from Virat! Congrats Sangakkara & the SL team for their wonderful performances on the field & their grace/sportsmanship today in having to swallow the bitter pill of defeat. Thx u too to our Pakistani brothers for their congrats...let us hope we again soon resume playing each other regularly.

Posted by Azaam on (April 2, 2011, 21:26 GMT)

I was askd by two of my IND colleagues as whats the difference i wud make of the both team? I replied its "Dhoni". Sachin for Ind/Murali for SL/Zaheer's death bowling/Malinga Yorkers etc. But the difference is that Dhoni blvd in the team, blvd on the fact & fought hard on implementing it but although i blv sanga's will make of good test batsmen captain, he is will not make a worldcup winning ODI or T20 captain, hve u heard of anyone going with a 4 changes in to a final & 1 of them is not part of the squad initially. 1 is enforced change due to injury & i cud agree the replacement of Chamara but hw in the world u'll keep both Mendis/Hearth out of the attack whn they had done reasonably well. This is unforgivable Sanga, u missed the stump of Symond on 03 who went on to make the winning total & nw brought 2 chamara silva's whose average is at 20's & u persisted with Dilhara. So u paid it on big time bcoz it wud b bad for cricket had u win wit this weak links, this is a WC friend.

As an Indian fan this was my sixth world cup,I remember how we lost to Saffas in 92, Srilanka in 96 , by almost everyone in 1999 including Zimbabwe, by mighty Aussies in 2003 and then by SL in 2007.But finally Indian team has achieved this big victory, thanks to Gary he taught out team that having talent is not enough ,strategy fitness intent and attitude is also important.Ganguly must be a very happy man today , he started this and Dhoni finished in great style.Tough matches against Aussies and Pakistan were a great help for India before this big final .Chasing 275 against a very good bowling and fielding unit was very tough but Dhoni and his men came out as true champions.Congrats to Indian team and my fellow Indian fans.

This is the answer to everyone, to Sanga who doubted how we are Test No1, to Aussies who always used to belittle to us, to Bangladesh who over rated themselves against us...... But its a tribute to the gr8 champion side who have in its rank the finest expertise in Sachin, Sehwag, Dhoni, Harbhajan, Yuvraj, Raina and Zaheer.....

It was a WCUP to remember for a long time after the 1999 WC. WCups 2983,87,92,99 were all supreme and this one adds to the list...

congratulations, my dear team india! i waited 28 years - and you had bitterly disappointed me in 2007 [in barbados when i had made plane reservations and bought tickets for the super-six stage, all of which went unused... while i remained broken-hearted] - but you played like true champions and showed your hunger to win today!!! :) what a way to lead by shouldering the responsibility and doing a masterful job under pressure, captain cool! you won over my skepticism about your leadership skills and captaincy today! what poetic irony that when tendulkar - despite playing with his huge hungry heart, focused like a laser beam, not unlike one in a [metaphorical] dream! - failed a team he had singlehandedly and routinely carried for lo-o-ong years, the next generation of talented indian cricketers decided to present him - as a token of all of our appreciation for his peerless national service- the one prize he has badly coveted [and perhaps secretly had believed he had to win for himself]!

Posted by Scott on (April 2, 2011, 20:23 GMT)

Speaking as an Australian, I would like to congratulate the Indians on creating history, in becoming the first host (or co-host) nation, to win the ICC World Cup. A well deserved win, and for SRT, MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and the mainstays of India who have played through thick and thin for India, it is a moment they will cherish for a long time. For the youngsters like Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina (who had little to do), this may well spur him on for the next 8 to 12 years, and Yuvraj Singh really matured during the tournament.

Being World Champions though, now means you have the target on your back, every team you play is going to want to beat you, but the spirit you've shown over the past 6 weeks suggests to me, that if you manage your players right, and find a replacement for SRT, India are capable of replicating Australia's World Cup dominance of 99, 2003 and 2007. Well done India.

1983-the year that went down in history as the year India won their first world cup. Kapil Dev and his team made the nation proud and India revelled in the team's success. 2007-India won the first ever twenty 20 tournament after beating neighbors Pakistan in a very exciting final. Dhoni led his team to a new record. 2009-India reached the top of the test rankings. Dhoni and his team could do no wrong. 2011-History repeats itself as India lifts the coveted trophy yet again. Dhoni and his team do it again. Sachin has a World Cup win among the myriad other accomplishments under his belt. Gary Kirsten has proven to be true inspiration. Yuvraj has silenced his critics and responded to his demotion to class B by winning the Man of the Tournament! Gambhir is a rising star who bailed his team out of certain death. And Dhoni.....perhaps India's most successful captain. Congratulations India! You made us proud.....yet again!

I am happy to see so many appreciating for winning, Indian, team. Thanks for support from Pak, Eng and all other teams. Dhoni is the man after Sachin main reason for this WC. Also Don't forget first SA person, Gary Kristen, being part of the WC. He was terrific and dedicated despite being very very silent. Thanks to SA for producing such a dedicated person.

But anyway Lions were able to save 11 Hoses of Indian players. Great job. Lions are Lions forever.....!!!

I feel so bad for Jayawardene. That has to have been one of his greatest hundreds he has ever scored, it really was a thing of beauty. But to lose a final, and to feel one of your best batting performances didn't mean anything must be awful. Sri Lanka, you fought hard and showed some brilliance, and I give you my condolences.

But Dhoni, even though he didn't score a hundred, showed the most fantastic leadership I have seen in years, and Gambhir rose to the occasion when Tendulkar was unable. Congratulations to the Inidan team; I actually did not believe you would win the World Cup, but you have proved me wrong and you played some outstanding cricket, congratulations once again and enjoy the moment!

Congratulations to India.Im a die hard Sri Lankan fan and not a big fan of the Indian cricket team, but i hv to say that India deserved to win this match as they had v v tough quarters and semi finals matches in the tournament and for that reason they did deserve to win the final. In the end the fielding was the main difference between the 2 sides today.I have never seeing India field the way they did today and although the lankan fielding was good it couldnt match up to the Indians, that is what i see as the main reason. But im also very very proud of our boys as they have performed v v well right throughout the tournament. So well done Sanga and the boys. But as a final request to the Indian people and media. Please be humble in your victory.cheers. Congrat again.

Well done Team India. You have done us proud. To young Indian team members - keep your head firmly on your shoulders. Remember Australia has won three in a row. Can you do it for India ? Dhoni's move to promote him knowing well that Yuvraj has struggled against Murli was a masterstroke. Why doesnt ICC have a fair play award , if it is there why wasnt it announced at presentation. Indian team could have won that as well. Three incidents - in non pressure situation Tendulkar walked against WI, Ashish Nehra wasnt sure if he had taken the catch in a pressure situation against Pakistan and In today match if in pressure situation Gautam Gambhir hasnt moved away from ball it would have been very difficult for Dilshan to catch Kohli. Nice guys also win. Ponting should learn something from this.

Congrats India.Well done.Dhoni palyed a SUPERB innings when it mattered most! Zaheer was unbelievable towards the end of SL innings! It showed what pressure can do even to the best.Similarly Malinga also showed what pressure did to him towards the end.His yorkers went wrong which even allowed Dhoni to sweep one. Not to forget Gambhirs innings.Very valuable when India needed someone to anchgor ably supported by kohli who is a very good prospect for a future captaincy. The words he chose to describe when Sachin was being carried by players said it all.The whole team played well and SL were just out done by a better team today.India didnt repeat what they did against South Africa in the league match. All went well for them today.Yuvi as expected got the player of series for an allround show and Dhoni the MOM.But the point to be noted is that three players from SL were in the top five rungetters but only 1 from India- supposedly having the best batting line upWorth a thought.Zak top amg wkts

It is a fitting reply to all our critics and detractors. It was completly a team game especially since sachin and Sehwag made only 18 runs between them.

Salute to Dhoni; who played a captain's knock at the most difficult situation. Zaheer who never allowed the srilankan openers to settle. Otherwise who knows whether India had to chase the same target as in 2003 finals.

Since the day I started watching cricket I was looking forward to the day when Sachin will bring the World Cup back home to India..But after 21 years of carrying the hopes of a nation it only seems befitting that the World Cup came home to Sachin

A special knock from MSD. I think he reserved it for final match.

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 2, 2011, 18:20 GMT)

congratulations india- a well deserved win best of luck to Pakistan for the next worldcup :)

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 2, 2011, 18:20 GMT)

MSD said some important words like selection of the best 11 or choose an option between two or three .. its only unity of the team, which actually worked and they deserved the moment .. I personally thank MSD to make us feel that we can do it apart from any controversies around ..

Congratulations India! But I'm very proud of Sri Lankan team. Played great cricket today and consequent runners up at WORLD CUP! This indicates consistency if any nothing else.

We salute you TEAM INDIA!

Congrats to Team India...Hatsoff to Indian Coach Gary Kristen and legends Sachin, Murali. Good game by both teams. Dhan dhana dhan Dhoni has answered all the questions. SL was very stubborn and very well played. First time I appreciated Sanga for his humble comments.

Congrats fellow Indians on this sensational Win. Team you deserved it.

Posted by Dummy4 on (April 2, 2011, 18:17 GMT)

Both teams chose the wrong players Sri Lanka had four changes. Mendis and Herath should have played. Ashwin should have played for India. However the better team on that day won. It was an enjoyable match.

Well done India and well done Sri Lanka. Both buyer and seller did well and made good money for the bookies. So did ICC whose name should be changed to Indian Cricket Council.

Congratulations Team India on winning the world cup. They proved that they were better team than the other favourites. To win the cup they had to beat Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and they did just that :)

Congratulations India and Team India from Pakistan.
