One of a slew of allrounders in Ireland's middle order, John Mooney followed elder brother Paul into the Irish cricket team. A left-handed batsman and right-arm medium bowler, he dismissed Marcus Trescothick, Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood on debut against England in 2006, albeit for the cost of 79 runs. He also struck 30 off 26 deliveries in that game coming in at No. 9. His batting has progressed since then and he is an increasingly useful presence in the lower middle order - though his bowling remains a touch expensive.
Strengths
While he will probably be called upon in both roles, Mooney's batting appears his main strength and he has the ability to reach the boundary - and clear it on occasion.

Mooney was part of Ireland's squad for the last World Cup, but had rather a quiet time and didn't feature in the successes against Zimbabwe and Pakistan. He did play against Australia and West Indies, but didn't take a wicket against either and only scored a handful of runs.
