Collins Obuya hit the headlines as a legspinning allrounder in the 2003 World Cup during Kenya's astonishing march to the semi-finals, where he picked up 13 wickets at 28.76, including 5 for 24 in the victory over Sri Lanka at Nairobi. That won him a one-year contract with Warwickshire, but he failed to make any impression. He missed his next chance on the big stage when appendicitis ruled him out of the 2004 Champions Trophy, and he then joined the players' strike which followed before heading to South Africa to play club cricket. His continued to struggle with his bowling, and in November 2005 he went to Australia for five weeks to spend time with Terry Jenner in a bid to recapture it. That failed, and Obuya had to develop his batting and he now plays as a specialist batsman and a very good fielder.

As a legspinning allrounder, Collins Obuya was one of the stars of Kenya's 2003 World Cup - he gained a contract with Warwickshire on the back of it - but soon after his game fell apart when he developed the yips. But he worked hard on his batting and fielding, and is now a mainstay of the middle order although an ODI hundred still eludes him. If it proves this is a World Cup too far for Steve Tikolo, Obuya will be the key batsman.
Strengths
Solid and capable of counter-attacking or rebuilding when his team is on the rack, both attributes which are likely to be in demand.
Till the end of 2006, Obuya's batting average in 31 ODI innings was 15.10, with no half-centuries. Since the beginning of 2007, in 40 ODI innings he averages 31.25, with seven half-centuries.
In his first 28 ODIs, Obuya bowled 222 overs - an average of almost eight overs per match. In his last 58 matches he has bowled 51.2 overs, an average of less than one over per match.
World Cup Tracker
Bowled Kenya to a vital win with 5 for 24 against Sri Lanka in 2003, but those days are long gone and his form as a specialist batsman is not nearly as impressive.
Expert view
"He has been a very solid No. 3 for us, and most probably is the best batsman in the side at present. It will be great if he can carry on his form from the previous season" - Eldine Baptiste, Kenya coach
