Probably the most improved Pakistan fast bowler over the last year, Wahab Riaz will be a crucial back-up to Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul. Though he always had a certain bounding hustle, he has allied to it more recently intelligence and know-how. He is still prone to bowling a stray wide or three but he has added tools now to his natural pace and bounce: a couple of good slower balls, an excellent in-ducking yorker and occasionally one that comes back in to the right-hander. He has potential as a seriously pesky lower-order bat too, who, if he sticks around long enough, can aspire to a Harbhajan Singh-like lower-order status.
Strengths
Variety is the key. He can bowl good, pacey length stuff to very tight lines during the middle overs. He can throw in slower balls, bouncers and at the death, or in Powerplays, a prolonged spell of yorkers.
