Mashonaland Eagles v Mountaineers at Harare, Feb 10, 2013 scorecard |
An allrounder who bowls offspin and bats in the middle order, Greg Lamb joined Hampshire's second XI in the summer of 2001 after being groomed by spells at the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy and with Mashonaland A in his youth. In 2005 he played in the winning Hampshire side in the C&G Trophy final against Warwickshire at Lord's, and was also a valuable member of the squad that finished runners up in the County Championship that season. In 2006 he struggled to get a regular place in the Championship side but topped the team's averages in the Twenty20 Cup with 183 runs at a strike rate of 115.82. But his opportunities in Hampshire's first XI dwindled along with falling returns with both bat and ball. After a forgettable 2007 season, he had more opportunities in 2008 but only had an impact in limited-overs games. He was released by Hampshire at the end of the 2009 season without having made a single appearance in their first XI in any format, and decided to take his chances with a return to Zimbabwe. The move paid immediate dividends for him, and before the season was over he had been called up to the national side for the tour to West Indies. Signed by the Mashonaland Eagles franchise, Lamb averaged 55.68 in the Logan Cup with two hundreds and 64.00 in the one-day competition - to go with a handy bowling average of 32.85 - before his call-up.

Greg Lamb was a batsman who bowled a bit before his Zimbabwe debut, but has since become a valued member of their set-up as an offspinning allrounder. Lamb had been part of Zimbabwe's age-group structures from Under-15 level, but left for England in 2001 and after a couple of seasons in Hampshire's second XI cemented a place for himself in the county's limited-overs side. He was released by Hampshire at the end of the 2009 season and decided to take his chances with a return to Zimbabwe, and though his selection for the West Indies tour in early 2010 surprised some he soon showed his value - particularly with the ball.
Strengths
As a bowler, Lamb's uncomplicated approach to offspin allows him to tie up an end and build pressure. A similarly straightforward batting technique helps him to occupy the crease - a precious skill in Zimbabwe's collapse - and stave off the collapse.
Lamb's batting certainly won't set the world alight: he has scored his runs at a strike-rate of just 45.57 in eight one-day innings. But he is equally frugal with the ball in his hands, conceding just 3.98 runs to the over.
All stats updated till before the start of the 2011 World Cup.
World Cup tracker
Lamb hasn't been involved in a senior World Cup but has taken part in two Under-19 events. In 1997-98, he was part of the Zimbabwe outfit that defeated a West Indies side containing Chris Gayle, Daren Ganga, Marlon Samuels and Ramnaresh Sarwan by five wickets, and in 1999-00 he was a member of the team that beat Americas, Namibia and Kenya and lost narrowly to England.
Expert view
"For somebody who in his English county career was regarded as a part-time off-spinner, he has done remarkably well in one-day cricket. This season [in the Zimbabwe domestic season] he has shown some improvement in his batting despite the shoulder injury, which he has recovered from after his period of rehab" - Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe coach
