Sean Williams is regarded as being one of Zimbabwe's most promising youngsters, a left-hand top-order batsman and more than useful left-arm spinner. In the Under-19 World Cup in 2004 he was the pick of Zimbabwe's batsmen with 157 runs at 31.40, as well as five wickets, and was expected to be called up at the time of the players' strike in April 2004, but his father Collin, a former first-class player and national hockey coach, refused to release him and insisted his son should concentrate more on his studies. Almost a year later, and with just one first-class match under his belt, he was drafted into the Zimbabwe squad to tour South Africa. Although he led the U-19 side in the World Cup in Sri Lanka in February 2006 - the highlight being a win over England - there were rumours both before and after the tournament that he was not happy with the board. This turned out to be true when he turned down a central contract the following month, opting to look for a more settled career overseas, although he again changed his mind, returning to play for Zimbabwe three months later. Dogged by injuries, the on-off farrago resurfaced in 2008 when he again quit for a contract in South Africa, only to return weeks later.

A left-handed top-order batsman of some class, Sean Williams is one of the more reliable members of Zimbabwe's middle order and has made runs against the likes of West Indies, Pakistan and South Africa. A former Under-19 captain, he was playing cricket for the senior national side before his 19th birthday. Williams soon showed he deserved his place, passing fifty for the first time in just his sixth game. For a time, there was uncertainty over whether his future lay in Zimbabwe but he appears to have committed himself, and as well as his batting brings handy left-arm spin and athletic fielding to the side.
Strengths
Williams has shown in the past he has the ability to pace an innings, while his proficiency against spin - he is a skilful reverse-sweeper - will be particularly helpful in the subcontinent.
Williams has reached fifty 11 times in 44 ODI innings - passing the mark five times against Bangladesh. He also has a good record against Pakistan, with 203 runs at 40.60.
All stats updated till before the start of the 2011 World Cup.
World Cup tracker
Williams' 2007 World Cup campaign was a reasonably successful one, as his unbeaten fifty against West Indies boosted his batting average to 47.50 for the tournament. He failed against both Ireland and Pakistan, however, and even his effort against the hosts was not enough to save an under-strength Zimbabwe from defeat.
Expert view
"Sean has missed out on a bit of cricket because of a few health and fitness issues, but I am confident that after his progress in his last matches he will be putting his best foot forward in the World Cup, and he will spring up a surprise moment of brilliance, as he is capable of doing that" - Alan Butcher, Zimbabwe coach
