Sri Lanka have sprung a couple of surprises by including Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas in their 30-member preliminary squad for the 2011 World Cup. Seamer Nuwan Pradeep is the only uncapped player in the list, which will be pruned to 15 ahead of the tournament to be hosted in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Jayasuriya has rarely featured in Sri Lanka's plans in recent times, and managed just 15 runs in six outings during the 2010 World Twenty20 in West Indies. The two-match T20 series against New Zealand that followed was his last international assignment; he has since been ignored for all formats of the game. Vaas, who, like Jayasuriya, was a part of Sri Lanka's successful 1996 World Cup side, has been out of the national team since July 2009, and last played an ODI in August 2008.

All 14 teams participating in the tournament have to announce their preliminary line-ups by December 19, and zero in on the final fifteen before January 19 next year.

Preliminary squad: Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal, Tharanga Paranavitana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Thilina Kandamby, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Farveez Maharoof, Jeevan Mendis, Muttiah Muralitharan, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Malinga Bandara, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilhara Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Dammika Prasad, Chaminda Vaas, Chanaka Welegedara, Nuwan Pradeep, Thilan Thushara

@ Gulshan_Grover: okay we beat Australia in Australia and you think we'll be beaten by them. As for SL lacking firepower, we saw the firepower Indian team has in South Africa that caused them to lose by an inning (Mind you Indian test side is better than ODI side) Dhoni himself has said that India is weak in the bowling department. Just think - Murali, Malinga, Kula (former number 1 ODI bowler), Perera, Mendis, Randhiv and now Vaas vs. Harabajan (now a batsman), Sharma, Kahn, Nehra etc. See the difference in class and talent? Zaheer is the only real threat in Indian line up. So my friend, it would be better to worry about your own national team selection by BCCI (which is being criticized by a lot of Indian cricinfo readers right now) instead of peeping and worrying about a team which is much better than your overrated side. Another funny thing is Indians laugh at us for picking Vaas and Sanath but in their articles criticize BCCI for not picking Dravid. Such hypocrisy...

Selection Committee of Sri Lanka should not waste a position in the 15 men squad by choosing Jayasuriya. Jayasuriya has done a great job for the country and now he must understand that when the time comes everyone has to retire. According to his records in last few years it proves that he is no more capable of playing cricket to the International standards. I strongly believe that Chaminda Vass should be in the 15 squad. He is still capable of doing it. Specially we need a specialist fast bowler who restrict runs 30 to 35 in 10 overs spell. Vass is a kind of player who can do that part for the team. So my final 15 is, Specialist Batsmen (5) - Sanga, Mahela, Upul, Samaraweera, Chamara; Batting all rounders (3) - Dilshan, Anjelo, Thisara; Specialist fast Bowlers (3) - Vass, Lasith, Kulasekara; Specialts Spinners (4) - Murali, Herath, Ajantha, Randiv

I think SL will lose in the semifinals: My XV- Dilshan, Tharanga, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Samaraweera, Mathews, T Perera, Kulasekara, Malinga, A Mendis, Murali. Extras- Kapugedera, Kandamby, Maharoof, Randiv. Dilshan can be the back-up wk if needed.

Looks like SL has lost its nerve and its confidence in its young players thats why this SOS for help to has beens such as Jaysuriya and the likes.

Does not matter what fantasy eleven fans come up with, SL does not have batting and bowling firepower to win in the subcontinent. They will be pulverized by Australia, England, SA, India and Pakistan. They may have outsized chance against WI and Zimbabwe and should do wel against Bangladesh.

I personally believe Sri Lanka should consider the next generation. So plz inject young blood to the WC squad, 1 Dilshan 2 Upul, 3 Mahela, 4 Sanga 5 Chandimal 6 Mathews 7 Thisara, 8 Vass 9 Malinga, 10 Kulasekara, 11 Murali, 12 Randiv, 13 Mendis 14, Kapugedara, 15 Chamara. I hope there will be no political fingers when selecting the final 15. Go Lions go......Cheers..!!!!
