Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has said that Sri Lanka need to strengthen their middle-order batting if they are to be successful in the upcoming World Cup. Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to victory in the 1996 World Cup, picked India and Sri Lanka as his favourites for the tournament but said Sri Lanka needed to re-look at their batting order.

"We have an all-round side. The bowling looks really good with [Muttiah] Muralitharan and [Lasith] Malinga," Ranatunga told Reuters. But the middle-order batting is a concern for me.

"Kumar [Sangakkara] and Mahela [Jayawardene]should not be batting at No. 3 and 4. One of them has to come down to No. 5 to bolster the middle order. Maybe they should send [Chamara] Kapugedera up the order to No. 4."

Sri Lanka usually have Thilan Samaraweera and Kapugedara at No. 5 and 6, with allrounder Angelo Mathews to follow. Samaraweera and Kapugedara have strike-rates of 68.75 and 72.86 respectively, while Mathews, who is yet to play a World Cup game, has a much healthier strike-rate of 80.92. Mathews was Sri Lanka's second-highest run-scorer in their three-match ODI series against Australia in November last year, with a strike-rate of 92.79, the best among their frontline batsmen. But Ranatunga says that Mathews alone cannot solve Sri Lanka's middle-order problems.

"Angelo is a very good player but he is still very young. It will be too much pressure on him."

Sri Lanka open their World Cup campaign on February 20 against Canada in Hambantota.

SL have the best team in the world (Slow pitches) . Best bowling attack (Malinga, Murali & Mendis), can distory any batting side on a any given day. Batting also same have the destrutive batsmen in this current team (Not like 2007). This team is better than 1996 WC team.Of course we dont have a players of calibar of Master Aravida Silva. & Arajuna (Fighter and a match winner). But have enough distructive bastmes like Dilsha, Kap, Mathiew & Thesara. Sag also can ancor or can play distructive innis if need. But its all about making the right selection and right battig order. In 1996 Jay, Kalu, Guru, Ara & Arajuna played in the top and had the players like Mahanama & Hashan bat down the order to build the innings if top order fail. Have to do the same in 2011 if we wan't to win. So much talent in the batting order so no need a conservative approch. If distructive batsments fails .Players like Mahela, Silva can build the innings and play safe.Because we have bowlers to defend any total

Thesra Perera is must player; he is like Patan in Indian team . We don't have Jay but he can do what Jay did in the past with bat or ball. We are too conservative now this approach won't win against good teams. We are wasting the talent of Kap, Thesara and Mathivews and also wasting overs. Thesara bring lot to the team and also a match winner. Drop Samarawerre we already have players to play safe if needed lilke Mahela, Sag, Tharanga . So don't need anymore. These flat wickets its ok to Open with Sag & Delshan. Sag did open in IPL and did the job. That way we can strenthen the middle order by bringing Silva. This allow Kap & Mathiew bat ahead of Mahela. After Dilshan top order bat about 40 and the most talented batmens watch how top order waste overs and when they a get a chance to bat last 10 overs just throw their wickets and get the blame and top order get all the credits for just wasiting overs. Scoring 250+ wont win agaist top teams.Agaist a weaker a team we cannot pass 300.

mr arjuna ranatunga had said, sri lanka cricket team need to be fit at middle batting. this is our week. but in the upcoming world cup to face . be fit our middle batting

I totally agree with Arajuna 1) Dilshan, 2) Sangakara,2) Kapugadara 4 ) Matheiew5) Mahela6) Silva7) NLTC Perera 8) Kulasakera 9) Malinga10) M Muralitharan 11) BAW Mendis. 12) Tharanga .This is my team. Look IND's team there is no Lasksman .But SL team ?? Samarawera? this is not 1980 We dont any problem with middled order the only problems is they are not rotaing the batting order like IND. SL top order always scores runs agaist low quality teams and when they faced agaist qualty team the middle orders is exposed and they put so much pressure on the middle order and tk about the middle order problems. If we want to win the WC, Kup & Mathiew should bat ahed of Mahela. Silva should in the team insted of Samaraweera. To me Dilshan and Sag the only top order playes who can win for us agaist any top teams.Rest are supporting players who scores heavily agaist weak teams.Middle order should be Mahela, Silva & Perera. Kup & Mathiew shuould bat after Sag.

Thilan should bat at 3 followed my Mahela and Sanga should come at 5.. out of the three Sangakarra has more grit.. if that happens we will be in good stepping

All are who won world cup they did something different experiment in the world cup match, I think we have to test that some new experiments, Why we are batting slowly and carefully in the first 15 over power play, we can promote batting order and send couple of batmen 1st down and 2nd down bat so we can take some necessary run rate that Sangakakara & Mahela can maintain it to the last over.

My Best Lineup is

01.Tharanga 02. Dilshan 03. Kapugedara 04. Tisara Perera 05. Sangakkara 06. Mahela 07. Mathwes 09. Kulasekara 10. Malinga 11. Murali. Run rate no need to reduce hence we have good batting line up, Kapugedara can play a role like Gurusingha did in 96 WC , Dilshan & Tharanaga should get a charging start like Kalu & Jaya Did

Tisara perera should come in 2nd down to Maintain run rate, Later Mahela & Sanga can stronge our middle order down, for last 5overs Mathwes is better like Michael Beven

please remove Samaraweera & Chamara Silva, Tisara perera Can bowl & bat

It seems Thilans inclusion greatly effecting to unsettle the team.. no use of him bat at 5,6,7..he wants lot of time to settle and ancour so may suits at no 3 ..but Sanga is the best at that position & doing the job..kapu is miles ahead than Thilan in talent plus his fielding ,bowling ..thilan playing 5,6,7 totally useless as he cant increase run rate wen it needs..and most importantly lot of picthes wl be batting friendly 300+ ones in this WC..so attacking players need to be selected ahead of accumulators.. 1.Tharanga 2. Dilshan 3. Sanga 4. Kapu /mahela 5 Mahela/Kapu 6 Mathews 7 Thisara 8.kula 9. Malinga 10 murali 11 Mendis/Herath

thats wat happened to day ..after mahela & sangas exit SL ns wer not controlling the game..this problem u will see clearly when early wkts has fallen for less runs think sumthing like 80/4 from 20 overs ..all top order experience batsm...an back to dressing room including both mahela & sanga wl happen agnst strong opposition ..next 30 overs who wil take entire responsibility ..Kapu,thilan ,Mathews, all are inexp in ODI cricket..thilan also new to ODI .. will they able to control the game after agnst strong oppsn?need to combine exp and inexp in batting thats y its bettr to bat sanga or mahela in betwn these three.. there will be no prob if one of opener bat atleast 15 -20 overs.prob is not happening always.then we dont need 7 batsman..actually i prefer 6-5 combn..must have to win matches..1.Tharanga 2. Dilshan 3.Sanga 4.Kapu 5.Mahela 6 Mathews 7Thisara 8. Kulas/Dilhara 9.MAlinga 10 Murali 11. Herath/Mendis

Randiv should in, instead of Mendis to strengthen SL bowling. But apart from that good selection...

@Kyle_Jones235 I agree with Ranatunga on this for some key reasons, SL can beat anyone on a good day, but when their top order collapses, samaraweera and kapu throw away their wickets and we bundle out for peanuts. If you haven't seen this time and again, you can't have watched a lot of SL games, I think including kapu and thilan was a waste of middle order space. With the usual batting order, once Sanga and MJ get out, we have a long tail, dilshan rarely seems to like to stick around and Tharanga is still iffy even with his recent form. If we don't change the setup to spread some of the batting around, we are going to be heavily exposed, and can't expect another Malinga-Mathews comeback. The reason why India and Aus are doing well is their middle order can actually stabilize a match in the event of a top order collapse (eg. 1st ODI SL vs Aus, they got to 240, SL would have been gone for half that if not for a miracle)
