Two days before their crucial game against Ireland, Bangladesh had injury scares to two key players while training. Shafiul Islam fell badly on his shoulder when going for a catch, and Imrul Kayes was hit on his right forearm when batting. They both looked bad blows when they happened - any fast bowler taking a bad fall is dangerous, and Imrul came out with a swollen arm - but the team is confident both of them will recover in time to play on Friday.

For a while, it seemed Bangladesh might even take the drastic step of bringing back Mashrafe Mortaza, who was not picked for the World Cup but who has been training with the side just in case. The injuries would also have brightened Mohammad Ashraful's comeback chances, although he is still a contender even if Kayes makes it back in time.

All those contingencies were all but laid to rest by the team physiotherapist, Mike Henry. "Shafiul is all right," Henry said. "He had an awkward fall on his right shoulder. We have given him the ice treatment, and we are not really concerned. We ran a few tests on him too. It was as we suspected, a fall. He is not ruled out for the Friday game."

Henry was hopeful about Kayes too. "He didn't wear his armguard, which he should have," Henry said. "It was a bruise, and of course it is not going to stop him from playing. It is a bit sore, and he had anyway finished his batting session."

It is just as well that the injury scares were not serious, because Bangladesh are up against an inspired Ireland side who have beaten them in both their clashes in world events. Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh's wicketkeeper-batsman, even called this a bid for revenge. "It is like the match against India when we looked back to take inspiration," Mushfiqur said. "It is the same thing in our mind about the Ireland game. We drew 1-1 in Ireland last year, and we lost to them in the 2007 and 2009 World Cups. So yes, we want to beat them and take revenge."

That doesn't mean that there was any disrespect for the opposition. "Ireland will be geared up to perform here because they have crossed a lot of hurdles to play the World Cup," Mushfiqur said. "But no matter how much they practise here, they will find it hard to cope with our spinners."

@ BohemianBlues get ready to eat your shoes. Ireland gonna swamp you remember ......

If Kayes is nt fit thn i will suggest Shahriar Nafees more than Ash...as his [ Nafees] recent performance graph is much better thn ash....and mashrafee is fit bt he is nt at his best as he used to be...bringing him back would b a good idea or nt the officials can say thyt... as it is a key game fr BANGLADESH TO reach to quarters, and our spinners are the ke bowlers so if shafiul is nt fit thn first they should think abt nazmul... ash can b a gamble in the place of mahmudllah/naeem...bt nt a replacement of kayes & @BudhaWillSmile bro... its nt a equal team match...bangladesh is nw ranked 8 team...tameem is wisden cricketer of the year and sakib is no. 1 odi all rounder who can take 5 wicket as a regular bowler and knock a centu in the same game...we r evn one step ahead in rakings frm WI.... So ireland's win will have to b call a upset,....nt a natural win....remembr...its in bangladesh, and bowling lineup consists of 4 spinners.bd will open with a spinner...

@BudhaWillSmile...nope. not equals at all. even if budha thinks so :) @ravishankar..Rahim meant 2009 T20 WC.

Finaly a match of equals...

It really doesnt matter who comes back in the team or who goes out. One player do not decide the fate. No 12, 13s are same as number 1 to 11. It is unrealistic to expect a benched guy to come back and win the game for you. Whether Mash or Ash, other 9 players need to do their parts as well. Ire/Netherlands should be normal win games. Think about beating WI. Not impossible. BD batting also needs to be a multi-tasker. Not just saving butts (not getting out) .... at the same time they also need to have a heart to chase a target like 370. ... :( ... can we play India again? lol

Nazmul & Ashraful will be more effective........& hope Imrul will be okay.....

Mr. Rahim.. When did WC happen in 2009? I guess the last world cup was played in Windies in the year 2007 and about the comment - "But no matter how much they practise here, they will find it hard to cope with our spinners." - I agree because it is your homeground and you have the biggest advantage to skittle through the Ireland side with such an ordinary spin attack. I beleive Razzaq and Shakib can do a better job with the ball this time atleast.

shafiul has been bowling consistently well since his debut. one bad match doesnt make anyone a bad bowler. big occasion (1st WC match) and a rampaging sehwag got the better of him. he will definitely come back.

if ireland beat BD in their home condition, i will eat my shoe!! irish are a bit overrated, they can win odd matches in swinging pitches. but not here. and Rahim shouldnt have said something like 'revenge'? as if they are arch rival of BD!!

Posted by MD GOLAM on (February 24, 2011, 3:20 GMT)

I have heard Ashraful gonna play the next match against Ireland. If it is the case then don't worry guys Bangladesh will loose the match anyway.

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 24, 2011, 2:48 GMT)

Bangladesh should bring Masrafe or Nazmul.......Bangladesh should also bring Ashraful instead of Naeem Islam..cause Ashraful is the most experienced batsman in our team....though i did not like him..

Posted by Farhan on (February 23, 2011, 22:46 GMT)

I hope Shafiul does not get well and Bangladesh replace him with somebody else who knows how to bowl.

Ireland should be crushed, otherwise no point winning just for the sake of winning. Run rate matters in this world cup as always.

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 20:32 GMT)

plz safiul vai give achance to mashrafee:' (

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 20:09 GMT)

The main surprising question is why Raqibul is at no 6 .....what the game plan have team management with him...if he don't get chance in no. 4 then how he play in no. 6 where we need a real stroke player for power play .....or Ash should be there......request to team management don't do any wrong things which will affect on winning.....

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 20:07 GMT)

Please please take Mashrafee bin Mortuza, in stead of Shafiul...he is our best first bowler

Please don't take Mr. Ashraful. He should be out in the next match. Why the selectors and coach and as well as Captain are thinking about Asraful???? Through him immediately.............

Posted by Sahil on (February 23, 2011, 19:45 GMT)

Chance for Mash to make a comeback in to the side, Shafiul was awful v India. And Rahim talking about a revenge match- rofl...they ain't that important a side that can make statements about 'revenge' matches. BD ought to win a few matches before actually trying to show off. This may only pull them further down as the pressure of expectations increases while they are playing at home.

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 19:44 GMT)

If BD looses to Ireland its gonna be a big shame on them in their home conditions and the world cup will be over for BD

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 19:09 GMT)

yes we hope mashrafe come back

Posted by Muthuvel on (February 23, 2011, 19:08 GMT)

irish would beat bd.

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 19:03 GMT)

Though we have a lot match winning spinners, our pacers should bowl in line and length to avoid any upset cause by other minnows

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 18:14 GMT)

Bangladesh has got all the advantages they can ask for. They have the home crowd back up and I hope the Tigers will beat the Irish quite comfortably.

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 18:09 GMT)

Good luck Tigers. Please keep our hopes alive!

Posted by w on (February 23, 2011, 18:00 GMT)

Yes, bring back Mashrafe, but not Shahriar Nafees or Ashraful. Both are only good when playing against countries like Zimbabwe. They will hit a four, then waste too many balls by blocking...and then they will get caught behind...routine stuff.

In Friday's match Tamim Iqbal have to play the knock like Virender shewag played against Bangladesh. One more thing team should play ash in place of naim islam. I saw naim is not in from . Another key point is they should play raqibul in the possion 4. I think he is a very good solid bats man. If Jemmy Siddon / anyone from the Bangladesh team management is reading this please don't worry about the bowling . Try to improve more on batting . I think we have made 283 against India . Which is a good score but still india's bowling is one of the weakest attack in this world cup. Even i think their attack is poor than Bangladesh . But their batting is strong. but our batting is good enough , so we should bat depth like England . Our bowlers are are good enough to bowl 50 overs.

We need a good batting combination + good hitters at the depth.

I wish all the best to Shakib & Tamim . I wish good luck to Junaed , Kayes , Shafiul & Rubel . I know all of them believes in their ability .

why BD need to think of ashrafull ? BD team is better without him. nafis could be the right replacement if kayes cant make it.

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 17:04 GMT)

praying for Kayes hope he will get well before Ireland match ,also the same for Shafiul BEST OF LUCK BANGLADESH

Posted by Dummy4 on (February 23, 2011, 16:40 GMT)

Can this be the moment where Mashrafe and Shahriyar Nafees get the chance to show their ever dependable performance? Wish all the best to TIGERS, but would really love to see these changes
