Shakib savours 'huge victory'

Shakib Al Hasan couldn't keep his emotion in check after it was all over. He and his side have been through a lot over the last week, and they desperately needed a win. The fashion that desperately needed win came in, following twists and turns every step of the way, would have left the toughest of men exhausted, and Shakib is not one of the best at hiding his feelings, be it about his critics or underperforming or unfit players. Or be it after a special win.

"It's not a normal win," Shakib said. "Obviously if you look at the situation, and the whole scenario of Bangladesh, it is a huge victory for us. And for the whole nation I think. Not really [an emotional win], although I became a little bit emotional at one stage. Some of the boys showed their character, how tough they are, how hard they can work. So that paid off."

It started with all their bowlers coming together and putting on a special show to restrict England to 225. Then the batsmen cut out the mistakes of the past, put their heads down, and didn't go for the easy option of playing flashy shots camouflaged as an attempt to counterattack. Shakib said they have been trying to bring that element into their game without really losing out on the intent. "We knew that if we have to win games, we have to score runs, so we are always score runs. Yes, you can say that we are a bit more careful in our shot selection."

Yet England came back superbly with some excellent bowling in the middle overs to leave Bangladesh 169 for 8. Some poor running from Bangladesh didn't help, either, and Shakib sees room for improvement. "At one stage, when me and Imrul [Kayes, Man of the Match for his 60] were batting, I thought we were going really well," he said. "There were some silly mistakes, like the two run-outs that could have cost us the game. My wicket was crucial too. It wasn't the time to play that shot. Hopefully we will learn from those mistakes. One thing we can learn is, whoever gets in should score big runs. Not 30s and 40s."

That said, Shakib admitted to having given up hope even though Mahmudullah and Shafiul Islam hadn't. "I thought we had lost the game," Shakib said. "When Riyad hit the winning shot, I still couldn't believe we had won the game. It took me some time to realise that, yes, we had won. I was lying down on the physio bed and watching the game. I Was having a chat with Tamim [Iqbal] and [Abdur] Razzak how badly we all played. We were just discussing our game, and having a chat."

Shakib added the win reiterated his belief in the team, and that the positive noises before the game came out of genuine confidence in the side's ability of coming back. "Yes, I always have the belief in my team," he said. "We have really good guys who are honest about their work, they can work really hard, day in, day out. If you have a bunch of guys like we have, we will always have the belief we can come back from any situation."

congrates BANGLADESH. QF hope is still alive. anything can happen in group B. pls BD try to do some good in batting. as many of BD supporters I also like to see Shahriar Nafees in the team. no raqibul, no ashraful. wishing u all d best in the remaining two matches.

Posted by   on (March 13, 2011, 4:15 GMT)

Tamim most of the time miss a good length ball for being in attacking mode and get bowled for in swinger. Nafees has similar tendency like Tamim. Tamim-Nafees pair could become a better opening pair than Tamim-Imrul for 10 over PP if they can correct the flaw. Imrul is better in 1 down since he is technically more solid in keeping wicket for longer period to avoid panic in the middle order. This order could be tried 1) Tamim 2) Nafees 3) Imrul 4) Junaid 5) Raquibul 6) Shakib 7) Mushfique 8) Mahmudullah 9) Razzque 10) Shafiul 11) Rubel. Naeem is good with hard heating but a choice with weaker sides at the moment. Raquibul places the bat in a crossed fashion other than swinging the bat on the line of the ball on off-stamp . Mahmudullah had a flaw with his gripping to defend the off-stamp and he corrected it with a tips from Sachin.

ONLY WAY TO IMPROVE BATTING OF THE BD TEAM IS TO BRING IN SHAHRIAR NAFEES!! Cmon captain u should have realised this by now............other than that brilliance all around the field that shattered the half filled glasses of englishmen was just miraculous and TIGERZ BELIEVE IN URSELVES AND U CAN DO WONDERS!!!!

Posted by Meety on (March 12, 2011, 20:01 GMT)

@scorpshadow - the big conspiracy of the tournament is why Mahmudullah AND Nafees were overloked for Ashraful !!!! This was the best Banga side so far. I would probably replace Raqibal with Nafees.

Well done Tigers. As I said in my previous post that I believe Tigers are much " better chasing than being chased". I would say again that Tigers should not lose Wickets by getting silly or unnecessary run-outs. I hope the team can play much improved cricket in the next two games to give us any hope of being in the Quarter Final. SA can be beaten, an example been set by England already, to keep them at a low score and bat cautiously. Please Jamie and Shakib, give Nafees a chance, he's much better a player than Rakib. Rakib have not shown any good cricket in the last 3 games. Give Nafees a chance against Neds, and you'll see he'll do good against SA. I have seen him doing well against big teams and play good cricket. Majority of fans want to see Nafees, not for anything else, but believe he'll be able to deliver.

really very happy and today arranging a party for bangladesh victory!!! Jai bangladesh!!!

Posted by scorpshadow on (March 12, 2011, 7:36 GMT)

I am really impressed by the cool temperament and consistency in batting of Mehmoodullah and Shafi Ul Islam and at the same time remembering how our Pakistani team tail enders loose and throw their wickets away at such junctures. I think not only Pakistan team but all other cricket teams also need to take a leaf out of this book and believe that by faith and hard work, nothing is impossible. Well done Bangladesh

well Done Bangladesh but still needs lots of improvement specially in batting in middle overs

Posted by virtualshah on (March 12, 2011, 5:43 GMT)

Some people simply doesn't know the pipeline of players in BD. They cannot even think of the qty & qlty. BD players will be certainly there. This/ These are the building blocks of the Cricket Traditions that will lead BD to the future glories.

Posted by CricEshwar on (March 12, 2011, 5:18 GMT)

Though it was a wonderful win, I guess Bangladesh needs a lot of improvement if they have to put a good show in the coming matches. They almost lost the game at one stage, England's poor bowling and defensive field released the pressure at the end. Bangladesh is still a huge work in progress in the batting department though they are on par in terms of bowling and fielding.

it was wondeful match. Love the way IMRUL played

Posted by   on (March 12, 2011, 3:04 GMT)

Congrats Bangladesh for snatching a difficult win out of an easy one. With the kind of start your openers gave, you should have won it by 6 wickets with about 5 overs to spare. Never mind, it is the win that matters.

Posted by   on (March 12, 2011, 2:59 GMT)

Congrats Bangladesh Team.We just want a good cricket from your team and never and ever give up this spirit. Good Luck!

Shakib you did a great job as a captain, faced the criticism in a positive way and reacted accordingly.Bravoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on those fans who criticized the team when they lost just a single match and made a mess out of it.They don't deserve to be praising the team now when it wins.I like Shakib's attitude when he said that they are NOT PLAYING FOR THE FANS but THEY PLAY FOR THE COUNTRY.Well said Bravooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! Shakib always believed that he can beat Eng and they did it in style. GL in quarters, hope you reach Semis and show how good a team Bangla is Go Bangla Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was great to see them come back like this after last week. Not too many people could have done it, all I wanted to see was a Fight. And I saw that all throughout the 1st innings and at the end of the 2nd Innings. I asked for one Fight and got two when England started to fight back which was good, otherwise it would have been just another game. AM VERY HAPPY, make sure you play with this fight all your next games. Win or Loose is a part of the game, just Play Well and as a Team!
