India captain MS Dhoni has said that a decision on Virender Sehwag's participation in Thursday's quarter-final game against Australia will be taken later this evening or on Thursday morning. Sehwag had missed India's final league game against West Indies because of a knee problem but batted in the nets on Tuesday.

"We are taking a call [on Sehwag] in the evening or maybe tomorrow morning before the start of the game," Dhoni said in Ahmedabad today. "Apart from that, all the others are fit."

Sehwag participated in the warm-up round of football during Wednesday's practice session, though he did not move much. Obviously he did not want to take chances with the knee. Later, he batted in the nets, albeit only against spinners for about 15 minutes. Once again he did not exert himself, refraining from bending his knee too much or stepping out as much as he would have liked. On Tuesday too he had batted for a regulated time in the nets, and if that is to be taken as an indicator, Sehwag is likely to return for the quarter-final.

Sehwag's knee has been bothering him since the start of the World Cup, but his current worry is the result of swelling caused by an allergic reaction to a pain-killing injection he took after the league game against South Africa in Nagpur. Gautam Gambhir opened the innings with Sachin Tendulkar against West Indies.

Sehwag's one-day average against Australia is 22.65 and it has been ten innings since he has made a limited-overs fifty against them. Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, who has dismissed Sehwag the most number of times across all format, said on Tuesday that he would look to bowl at Sehwag's rib-cage. However, Dhoni did not seem too concerned with the strategy.

"It's really good to have Sehwag opening the innings for you, because deliveries will be short and to the body. He's the kind of batsmen, if you go slightly wrong, he can make the most of that kind of a bowling.

"He can play an aggressive game, change the course of a game in the first five overs and give your team the kind of momentum that is needed."

Come on India you can do it! Pakistan has done it so can you!!

Posted by Ashok on (March 24, 2011, 8:04 GMT)

viru bai should play today...& it's a must win condition for india to enter into the semiz

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 7:44 GMT)

india will not manage the win if S.R.Tendlkr play. if he will not play they win.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 7:44 GMT)

Sachin we need 100th TON....

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 7:23 GMT)

I dont know what Johnson was thinking when he ran his mouth before the game and revealing his ideas/plans against opposing players. He would have used this as a strategy to surprise him rather than letting him know so he can wait on the back foot. And more or less sehvag knows what he is going to get with Johnson. Or Johnson might be using a double-whammy here !!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 7:19 GMT)

Nope! batsman like sehwag shud open in qf vs AUS otherwise it will b a big problem for india in today's match...hope for the best guys !!

Posted by Dru on (March 24, 2011, 7:10 GMT)

Do you play an unfit Sewag? With so many quality batters in the wings one would say no but this is not just anyone - its Sewag and needs a closer look. I guess it all depends on the extent of the injury and of course he wont be allowed a runner or leave the field (I think) if he comes in wtih an injury so this is a hard one. I reckon India will play him as not having him up the order is simply too much of a blow in such a important game.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 6:49 GMT)

sachin will be face more pressure, if sehwag not playing today. I trust on only First 3 wkts.

Posted by mohammed on (March 24, 2011, 6:42 GMT)

Any update on this situation?

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 6:01 GMT)

Whatever the sort of bowling, these are Indian pitches and some of the best batsmen to play in these conditions. Indias best (and perhaps only) chance is to simply bat australia out of the game to where thier relatively poor bowling lineup is hidden. That being said, australia are POOR at playing good spin, something demonstrated time and time again, and lack a quality spinner since the time of warne. This game is evenly balanced - atleast until the toss.

Posted by Srinath on (March 24, 2011, 5:36 GMT)

though sewag has a poor avg against aussies, he will hold the key in this match(if he plays). get well soon viru. hopes of a billion indians rest on your shoulders.chak de india!!!!!!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 5:07 GMT)

Crucial for India to get off to a good start... And what better than Sehwag getting a good score..

Posted by Ethirraj on (March 24, 2011, 5:06 GMT)

If Shewag doesn't play today, Raina should be promoted ahead of Dhoni. Raina is a good hitter and if he plays for 20 overs India can win this match.

Posted by ghazanfar on (March 24, 2011, 4:55 GMT)

can india win like pakistan

Posted by Rohan on (March 24, 2011, 4:50 GMT)

i wonder how indian players keep all their injuries away in ipl and pull them out during world cups and chamiopns trophy.....

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 4:25 GMT)

Sehwag is the key.... Without him the batting line up becomes vulnerable.... He has to play

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 4:15 GMT)

Lets hope for the best. I know India has good batting side & better if bowlers also give their contribution. ALL THE BEST. Whoever we chose no doubt luck favours. Dont consider opposition are strong, they too will be nervous how we r? We have best batsman but diff is they have best bowlers too.........

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 2:11 GMT)

india should win this game easily, should not loose any wicket atleast for 10 overs make a total 300 easy. TRIO PATHAN<RAINA AND YUVI WILL MAKE ENOugh runs and they r winners.

Posted by Manzur on (March 24, 2011, 1:39 GMT)

Banking more on Viru may not be a good idea.If the pitch is slow and low,you can only rely on him then. But in those condition any Indian top order batsman can go for runs. With a new ball no matter what the condition is the ball will do a bit.Probably that is the aussie bowlers main focal point.Team batting first will certainly have the edge in todays match.

Posted by Bimal on (March 24, 2011, 1:21 GMT)

If Sehwag will Play... India will Win..!!

Posted by venkat on (March 24, 2011, 0:59 GMT)

Sehwag will not play in Q/F against Australia

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 23:28 GMT)

Posted by PADDY on (March 23, 2011, 22:33 GMT)

Sehwag is scared to face Lee and Tait and he is coming up with excuses. Go Aussie go!

Posted by Gaurav on (March 23, 2011, 20:02 GMT)

If he's injured, maybe he should just sit out and let 11 fully fit play. Gambhir opens with sachin, in comes Raina

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 19:48 GMT)

if india chase, sehwag is anyway going to get out in first 5 overs...

Posted by shakir on (March 23, 2011, 19:01 GMT)

get gambhir or kohli out of the team and play an extra bowler. i say this because even if we score 300 batting first , the problem we would face is that we have only 4 bowlers if we play 7 batsmen. so if one of the 4 bowlers has a bad day then we are left only with 3 bowlers and against a team like australia that can be the reason for defeat. so play 6 batsmen and 5 bowlers. when i say 6 batsmen that includes mahendra dhoni in it.. so my tam fro tomorrow would be sehwag(if fit), sachin, kohli, yuvraj, dhoni, pathan, harbhajan, ashwin, zaheer, munaf, ishant sharma

Posted by kannan on (March 23, 2011, 18:55 GMT)

The guy has some other serious problem. There is a good chance that he wont play even in finals if India manages to reach it.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 18:47 GMT)

If Sehwag is gonna play then he is going to clobber mitchel johnson along with all brett lee and shaun tait.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 17:44 GMT)

sehwag in or out it doesnot matter for AUS......

Posted by Prem on (March 23, 2011, 17:02 GMT)

No loss if he doesn't play. Who gets injured this often, in a tournament this big? I hate to be that guy, but we all know he's gonna be fit throughout the IPL. He's been this way for the last two years, circa the World Cup T20. India doesn't need an unfit or semi fit hitter. He barely makes many when he's fully fit.

Posted by Prasanth on (March 23, 2011, 16:57 GMT)

India must play the below team for a win against australia. Gambhir,Sehwag,Kohli,Sachin,Yuvraj,Dhoni,Raina,Harbhajan,Ashwin,Zaheer,Sreesanth. Sreesanth,Raina must be in the team as australian agression can be meet only with agressive players.Lazy players like munaf and nehra cannot do the job for india. Indian bowlers must try to take wickets rather than bowling defensively.

Sachin must bat down the order at number 4 to stabilise the middle order .He is a senior player and must show the responsibility and play the role which aravinda desilva played for sri lanka in 1996 world cup. He should play that role for the country and not for his records.

Posted by Rakesh on (March 23, 2011, 16:22 GMT)

India is the fittest team in the tournament. Players are not injured as much as other teams despite being one of the best fielding side. England,Australia,Nz etc had to replace so many players. Indians are the fittest athleths in the history of sports. Players play upwards of 10 years at a stretch very often in India due to their athletic ability and fitness.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 16:02 GMT)

go and give your best guys.... bowlers give 400% plzzz

Posted by Raghavendiran on (March 23, 2011, 15:34 GMT)

Dear Indian team, 1. Indian team has done a good fight in all the matches in this tournament with only one defeat that too very close. No one else 2. All players know their ability and strength thats why they are in the team INDIA. 4. I hate seeing the experts commenting the Indian bowling dept is not of the kind of a world cup winner. Tell me which team has a outscoring batting dept than INDIAn team . So when Indian 11 stands together they are threatening to anyone. The batsman will take out the pressure from Bowling and fielding dept. 5. Dhoni have good sense to use right person at right time at given point of time. With the available resource he is undoubtedly a challenging captain. 6. When our bowlers spots the line and length at what they are good at (irrespective of either it is six/dot/wicket) we are certainly at our best. Doesn't really matter to choose 11 from 15 all are good. Feel confident, bowlers will smoke out Aussies. Good Luck!

Posted by Edgar on (March 23, 2011, 15:06 GMT)

Hope Ashwin retains his place and both Raina and Kohli play if Sehwag is not fit; would like to see Sreesanth play although this is doubtful for him to come in at this stage and this important game. I do not know how the Mohali track plays but Aus really should not be playing three seamers, sad to see Nannes warming the bench, he is the best they have.

Supporting India, good luck!

Posted by amit on (March 23, 2011, 14:47 GMT)

Dhoni and co had their best moments when they played fearless cricket and enjoyed the game. Both teams will be nervous , no doubt about it and hence its crucial to take early initiative. Sehwag or Ashwin will be game changer.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 14:43 GMT)

i dont think sehwag will be missed this time around. every game could be your last one!! come what may sehwag will be in 11

Posted by masood on (March 23, 2011, 14:39 GMT)

PAKISTAN vs INDIA semi please...................

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 14:39 GMT)

Bowlers will do the Job for India, there won't be much impact even if Shewag does not play tomorrow. Shewag should be rested for tomorrow's match and ready for match against pakistan..

Posted by Venkat on (March 23, 2011, 14:32 GMT)

if viru doesnt play its a major drawback for india.. coz he takes the attack to the opposition .. even d little cameos by him can leave a big impact on Oz... so its important tat he plays tomo..

Posted by IQBAL on (March 23, 2011, 14:17 GMT)

It's better for India to lose to Austrailia to avoid shameless defeat in Semi in their home town

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 14:02 GMT)

rest shewag go in with the same team against WI hard but the team can offer

Posted by A on (March 23, 2011, 14:01 GMT)

It is better to have a settled line up with virat at 3, yuvraj at 4. If sehwag is fit, gambhir or raina should play at no. 5 instead of gambhir at 3.

Posted by Lakpriya on (March 23, 2011, 14:01 GMT)

No Viru no India, coz if Sachin scores a century India will loose..

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 13:59 GMT)

If Sehwag is not available then its huge set back for india.. already missing Praveen kumar in bowling department.. if india misses Sehwag too then they have to struggle hard to beat australians..

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 13:58 GMT)

Play Sehwag to mentally disturb kangaru.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 13:43 GMT)

Both Kohli and Raina should play along with Ashwin if India has a chance to win. Ganbhir may be a good bat but his fielding and running between the wickets are questionable.

Tendulkar Kohli yuviraj, Raina Dhoni Pathan Ashwin Harbhajan Zaheer Chawala Patel

If Schewaq is 100 percent fit you may drop Chawla.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 13:42 GMT)

With India just three games away from the ultimate glory, I sense Dhoni and Gambhir are due big time against Aussies.

Posted by Mohan on (March 23, 2011, 13:39 GMT)

If Sehwag is not fit don't play him.Don't change the team combination. If Ashwin can bowl in powerplay overs continuously drop Munaf Patel and pick-up Piyush Chawla.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 13:32 GMT)

no neeed to worry sehwag wil be back and india will win INDIA CWC CHAMPIONS 2011

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 13:28 GMT)

I hate to say this, but, how much or whatever hype is around this game, India gonna lose this match and go home. Period.

Posted by Lalith on (March 23, 2011, 12:52 GMT)

Do not worry Sehwag. Other 10 players are also not fit at all when it comes to fielding, middle and lower order batting, & bowling (Ex Zaheer).

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:46 GMT)

Ooops.... Hope he plays, Fingers crossed.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:44 GMT)

why no play sehwag in thrusday

Posted by Lahiru on (March 23, 2011, 12:31 GMT)

india have no chance coming into semis without shewag playing..

Posted by Bang on (March 23, 2011, 12:31 GMT)

Poor Shewag! Every time he is about to face fast bowlers, he gets sick or is attacked with pain. How sad. Wishing him to get well early after the world cup is over and he can play against with not-so-fast bowlers soon. :)

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:27 GMT)

Sehwag should play the match against Aus, India needs Sehwag...

Posted by RAHUL on (March 23, 2011, 12:25 GMT)

Sehwag must play!!!! His presence in the team only gives the confidence and if he bats even for 10 overs it decides the who innings.. god please give him strength to fight with his injuries and be present for the show tomorrow.. All the best SEHWAG..

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:22 GMT)

i think sehwag should be retained in this side even though he is half fit....

Posted by Sayed on (March 23, 2011, 12:21 GMT)

If sehwag will not play then it will effect our batting....

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:17 GMT)

we hope sehwag will bat on thursday against aussies. without sehwag india should be in trouble to start a healthy run rate. because he is the only player to cracking the delivery in all format. once again we pray for sehwag bat against aussies.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:15 GMT)

It will be the best thing going forward into the knock-outs to have Viru fit and raring to go at the Ozzies. He has the ability to completely demoralize a band of 11 players in the opposition with some clean and clear hitting and when He gets going there is nothing else that counts, no fast or slow bowlers, no pitch conditions, no on-field dramatics and no clever captaincy. Its just Bang Bang Viru. Lokking forward to a India vs Pak semi-final.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:14 GMT)

i hope he doesnot play.....

Posted by technobeester on (March 23, 2011, 12:13 GMT)

Hai everyone good evening... World war fire starts Now every team under do or die situtation... from india team point of view without sehwag its difficulty to beat team like australia... Winning Australia needs a good start from two openers Sachin and sehwag...

Lets see master can" make his century in centuries"...

Dhoni decision wil make a change the game plans.. past game he was collapsed the batting order... in this stage he must careful with this thing...

Zaheer and Bhaji must be a part of bowling stream to make pressure against australians...

Three fast bowler option can make a plus in pitch like ahmedabad nehra can be used in beggining overs... Gambhir can be rested and raina can be given a opportunity... lets support our team india to enter semi's "JAI HO"...

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 12:13 GMT)

hopefully he shud be playing else they wont get a good start.

Posted by Atom on (March 23, 2011, 12:13 GMT)

just stay with the team that beat the Windies

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 11:57 GMT)

This does not sound good especially when he has been threatened he will peppered with the bouncers by Mitch Johnson!! I think he might play India needs him in their finest hour tommorrow COMMON INDIA CHAK DE !!!!

Posted by SHYAM on (March 23, 2011, 11:55 GMT)

fortunately for him, johnson has not faced real sehwag in form, as he is now. hope to see sehwag blasting johnson's bowling all over on thursday

Posted by Nikunj on (March 23, 2011, 11:53 GMT)

sehwag is fit for tomos game u can tell by the second paragraph from bottom his playin with aussis mind.......sehwag will score 100 tomoro

Posted by venkata suresh on (March 23, 2011, 11:50 GMT)

Hope Sehway plays in tomorrow's QF against Aus. He is the kind of batsmen who can give a blast to the score card and if he clicks then India can make or chase a target of 300+ .. Also It is good to have Sehwag opens with Sachin... Hope India will come up as a team tomorrow to win the QF...

Posted by Nikunj on (March 23, 2011, 11:50 GMT)

sehwag is fit but dhoni just playin with the aussis mind ..............come on sehwag

Posted by Alok on (March 23, 2011, 11:46 GMT)

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 11:28 GMT)

Even an half fit sehwag is better than raina, becoz of his shear presence in the middle

Posted by Shikhar on (March 23, 2011, 11:26 GMT)

This will be terrible if he can't play. India has to play their best 11. Please Viru, get well soon.

Posted by sohaib on (March 23, 2011, 11:25 GMT)

whatever the australian are saying just trying to overcome the shortcomings they have in these days, cant do any thing, india is a far better team than india and when they are batting , no one can stop them from runs and i think if india manged to score only 250 runs its enough for australia.

Posted by vijay on (March 23, 2011, 11:21 GMT)

Dhoni keeps talking about momentum but every time the Indian openers have got the team off to a start the middle order has flopped

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 11:20 GMT)

Sehwag need to play yaar...

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 11:19 GMT)

This is bad news ! Hope he is fit for tomo. !!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 11:18 GMT)

I think this is just a mind game from Dhoni to keep the Aussies guessing. Only yesterday it was announced that Sehwag is fully fit to play and he even practised in the nets.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 23, 2011, 11:17 GMT)

C"mon Shevag ........ India needs you in this match. India cannot win without a 100% effort from batsmen & Bowlers. I hope missing shevag they wont be all out for a small run. At least let India put a competition. I believe 3 teams who will take the cup could be "Australia, Pakistan & Srilanka.
