'I am playing this tournament for a special person'

"For the first time in my life there have been claps in a press conference. I am sure this is a special moment for me, guys." Yuvraj Singh made a telling opening statement. The whole media room was in splits. For the next 17 minutes Yuvraj played the role of entertainer effortlessly, his answers laced with wit and charm.

It was difficult to imagine the man sitting there as the same one who had fought doubts, conditions and the formidable Australian fast bowlers and stood tall and strong for one-and-a-half hours to eventually take India into the semi-finals. Still, it was not entirely a surprise; Yuvraj has now been named man of the match in four of India's seven matches so far this World Cup, so he must be getting used to it.

"I've been batting really well since the England game," Yuvraj said. "The plans are working for me: trying to work till the end, trying to hit the ball down the ground into the gaps. I just kept telling myself to bat till the end, stay till the end."

With 12.3 overs left, 74 runs required and just one specialist batsman in Suresh Raina for support, Yuvraj was left to hold the Indian innings together and take it past the finish line. The Aussies were steadily closing in, having picked up the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni in quick succession.

Yuvraj had come up with an all-round performance in India's 80-run victory against West Indies last Sunday. His 113 in that match was his first century since June 2009. It was a knock of determination, as he fought hard to stay on his feet in the Chennai heat while suffering from dehydration; he even threw up a few times while batting. Later in the evening he returned to pick up two wickets to expedite the Indian victory.

Even in the earlier matches in the tournament, he had restrained his attacking instincts admirably to stay put, and brave India through tense moments in victories against Ireland and Netherlands after the main batsmen had lost their way easily. Coming into the quarter-finals, Yuvraj had run the whole gamut of experiences, which only helped him survive the high-pressure situation at Motera, which he said had drained the players both mentally and physically.

Yuvraj Singh lets out a victory cry, India v Australia, 2nd quarter-final, Ahmedabad, World Cup 2011, March 24, 2011
Yuvraj Singh kept his emotions in check till the final runs were scored, after which he let out a victory roar © AFP

On Thursday, he turned up match-fit and was one of India's best bowlers with two top-order wickets and followed it with an unbeaten 57, an innings he described as one he had built in his dreams exactly a year ago. "The emotions, I really can't explain them, because it was tough out there. From last year I have been dreaming of playing Australia in a crucial game. I don't know why Australia; probably because they are three times world champions. I'd been thinking about this moment for the last 365 days and it actually came true. I just believed in myself, I envisioned that moment from time to time: me staying there till the end and hitting the winning runs for India. So it is a very emotional moment for me."

There were a few jitters, especially the child-like indecisiveness between him and Gambhir while going for tight singles. Gambhir fell victim to one such moment of confusion and was run out. Yuvraj accepted his role in the mix-up. "It was a bit of a mishap with Gautam. We haven't batted too much together and the running between the wickets was just out of order. And I think it was my mistake and I apologise."

It was not an isolated incident, as there was immense pressure on both teams. Experienced hands like Brett Lee failed to come through when Yuvraj and Raina began turning the screw on the Australians, at the start of the final eleven overs of the match. Lee had taken the wicket of Dhoni in his previous over, but in the 40th, the pair took him to the cleaners, with Yuvraj hitting two scorching boundaries.

In the next over, Shaun Tait was wayward and gave away 13 runs. Those two overs proved to be one of the catalysts of India's win, but Yuvraj said it was not a planned counterattack. "It was very difficult to control the emotions because the heartbeat was racing in the pressure situation. If we made one mistake in a situation like today we would be out of the World Cup. Various thoughts run through your mind, but I decided that I would only watch the ball, keep it simple and as far as possible not hit in the air. Unless the asking rate peaked to seven-and-a-half, only then I would go for the big hits; till then I would hold back."

Yuvraj revealed that there was a driving force behind his recent success, a person he will unveil if India make the final on April 2. "I am playing this tournament for a special person. That special person always comes into my mind whenever I am in a pressure situation. Hopefully it will work out in the end."

Not only was he a bit secretive, he even turned philosophical about his good work against Australia. "You have a lot of thoughts [in the mind while batting] but whenever you want to desperately do it for your country and your team it somehow works out. It is great it is working at the right moment in the World Cup. It is a great victory for us."

Yuvraj had planned for every eventuality. On the eve of the match, he was the last batsman to face throwdowns from coach Gary Kirsten. Yuvraj knew the Australians would fire a lot of short-pitched stuff at him to unsettle him. "I just wanted to concentrate on hitting everything down the ground while leaving out the short balls."

That planning came to fruition on Thursday. He checked his shots and emotions till the victory stroke was unleashed. Once the job was done, he came crashing and sliding down on his knees, the way football players rush to the flag after scoring a goal. Then he let out a victory roar. A little later, he trotted out the jokes.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 19:34 GMT)

We can't say its Sachin. It is probably his father. Best Wishes for India's World Cup campaign.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 18:56 GMT)

Alright! Now I am really worried since Sanjay Manjrekar and Ricky Ponting have kinda jinxed that India are favorites against Pakistan. GUYS! INDIA ...please don't be complacent. Practice hard. IT IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY AGAINST PAKISTAN. India lost the semis with the same darn Sanjay Manjrekar and Co being complacent after QF in 1996. Probably it's time for Sharda Urga to write another article criticizing team India and the work that still needs to be done.

Posted by Ranjit on (March 25, 2011, 18:23 GMT)

I think that special person is Deepika Padukone...Am I right?

Posted by Govind on (March 25, 2011, 18:19 GMT)

Yuvraj should play for the country and nothing else. What if that special person dies? Does that mean he will quit playing? Country should be first and then that special person. People normally dedicate their success to someone special only after achieving that success.

Posted by d on (March 25, 2011, 17:55 GMT)

Oh thanks Yuvraj! U dont have to do win the world cup for me. Do it for the country though.

Posted by Gourishankar on (March 25, 2011, 17:50 GMT)

once Yuvi won a lot of man of the match awards, I could think of 1 guy who did a similar thing in 83 world cup when we won - mohinder amarnath. Hopefully yuvraj continues to do well, and at least 2-3 others support by good partnerships. Having Raina in the team lifts the fielding so much and, as we saw, has a positive affect on others as well. Good luck team India!!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 17:39 GMT)

That special person is dada and its my gut feeling because I remember once Yuvraj told I am ready to die for a captain like this....

Posted by Dinesh on (March 25, 2011, 14:26 GMT)

I concur with Samiuddin..my guess for that special person is Sachin Tendulkar!

How can one be so popular and yet so non-controversial? Impressive!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 14:22 GMT)

i think the special person is his mother or sachin tendulkar

Posted by Manohar on (March 25, 2011, 14:09 GMT)

My Guess is it's his Dad Yograj Singh. He was a good player and got dropped from team and went through roller coaster ride like Yuvraj.

yuvraj was instrumental in India's win against Australia in the inaugural ICC KnockOut Trophy in Kenya many years ago. He and Zaheer were making their debut in that series and it was them again who put a spanner in Australia's plans today too. The boys then have now become men and leading the way forward for India to win another major trophy... keep it up Yuvi.. and may that special person provide you with the motivation to continue doing so !

Posted by abhay on (March 25, 2011, 11:23 GMT)

India should drop Munaf and bring in Yusuf. Ashwin opens nicely anyway. Will give big boost to one final assult department. Between Yusuf, Raina, Kohli, Tendulkar team can manage 7-8 overs that Munaf otherwise bowls.

Last year a young relative of mine, while giving a TV interview, mentioned that Yuvraj was his hero. I told him that he should have someone like Tendulkar as a hero who is a true sportsman and a gentleman... Well a year later....The way Yuvraj is approaching his cricket and playing for the country, I am now taking my hat off. Well done Yuvraj. KEEP IT GOING.

Posted by Dru on (March 25, 2011, 7:48 GMT)

Yuvi was sensational and really making the WC his own. His calm under presure was sensational and yesterday the the game was there to be lost after Dhoni hit a panicky cut shot but Yuvi was just calm and steady and probably put the horrors of the batting collapses in the past few games to rest. Quality player with both bat and ball and he hasnt really been flamboyant just all class and maturity.

I am great fan of Yuvi becuase of his timing and class. He is great onside ODI player and best left handed ODI player against fast bowlers today. What a performance. Hats off.

Any guess to whom he may be referring????

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 6:18 GMT)

it indeed suggests that yuvraj is so confident about his game! the way he batted against the west indies and the kangaroos was not the old yuvraj but a new one. but the media just sideline him everytime either for his form or for his personal life. whether its his girlfriend or his weight. now that he his performing the media will clap tom. when he hits a slump the media will be waiting for reasons to blame the poor form. the media dont realize that how much ever they get paid they still know that they are representing their country. they always keep their country first in their hearts and yuvraj is no different.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 6:14 GMT)

Is that special person Tendulkar?

For the first time, i saw Yuvi batting in such a maturity !! it was really satisfying to see that. We all would like to see him doing similar things in coming matches. Less talk from mouth and let the bat talk !!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 5:59 GMT)

Yuvi was shown Aussies the door!!it was really emotional moment not only for him but entire country!so india held the nerves in pressure cooker situation and come out winners!i hope we will knock out Pakistan also in the Semis.

Posted by Vikram on (March 25, 2011, 5:51 GMT)

Awesome, Yuvi! What a transformation. Good to see him being so consistent. What is admirable is the curbing of the penchant for airy fairy strokes especially with the crowd turnout being what it is in India. And has his bowling helped! What we now look forward to is the old Yuvraj on the field at cover-point where he routinely saved 20-30 runs.

Posted by Ken on (March 25, 2011, 5:42 GMT)

I'm sure that "special person" is none other than Tendulkar. Everyone in this team will want to win this World Cup FOR him and WITH him.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 5:39 GMT)

congrats Team India...for well deserved victory. cheers to yuvi, sachin and rest of the players. im really disappointed with dhoni and munaf, after getting a series of chances to improve their game they still post themselves as if playin a domestic match. Team India should not suffer for these two, let Gary re-think whether munaf is really needed in Semis?. and as for dhoni is concerned he needs to play in this WC atleast from the semis and not wait for IPL to begin?

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 5:37 GMT)

Thanks for producing an outstanding batting display, u should be the role model for many game finishers in ODI/T20. Truly UV, though all my friends were criticizing you in your tough times, i was the only person to explain your best skills / strengths to them.

At the start of WC i thought Yuvraj will be in headlines after every match either by his bowling or batting. But YOU ARE DOING EVERYTHING WHAT U CAN DO FOR THE TEAM may be i think SACHIN is the special person behind your person.

Posted by KISH on (March 25, 2011, 5:33 GMT)

Well done Yuvi!! Great to have you back in your old form. When 2003 world cup began, Yuvi was my favorite Inidan player. Hower, I used to say you should be dropped when you weren't performing in the recent past. That is only because I always thought that you will come stronger if you were dropped. Now, Yuvi rocks again!!!

Really commendable performance today by Yuvraj! ..and what a great comeback..reminds of of Afridi in 2004/05...!! This upcoming semi-final should be a great match and I don't think the sides have been this evenly balanced since a long time [1994 Quarter final comes to mind..2003 we had a lot of old players]. Both sides beat the reigning world champions one after another: Pakistan dismayed them with bowling and India with batting [almost all players performed with it, par gambhir's foolish runout]. In short, greatest set up for the greatest match. In addition, I must add that both sides' fans will have to show maturity. Expect a cracker!

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 25, 2011, 4:27 GMT)

I was not in the favor of Keeping Yuvraj in the World Cup squad. I guess thats why I am not in the Selection Committee... and I am thankful to God for that

I am very happy that India won the game and are in the contest to win the World Cup 2011. Yuvraj and Raina did a great job in giving a great finish in a pressure situation. Good job by Sachin & Gambhir with their half centuries. Today I see this win as a team effort, our bowlers & fielders did a great job in restricting Australia to 260. I am satisfied with the Indian team fielding after a long time. Keep up the good work and showcasing the team work like this makes you World Champions.

Its dream come true for Yuvraj becomes a good allrounder anyway its Yuvi woldcup after 2003

Kudos to Yuvi and the Indian Team.....

Delighted moment after crucial victory............

Posted by rahul on (March 25, 2011, 3:51 GMT)

we should remember that raina also played a good knock and also thrashed the short balls so raina, sachin, and gambhir runs could not be understated

Posted by Goddadda on (March 25, 2011, 3:47 GMT)

Yuvi has really turned things around for India and himself. It brings back memories of the famous run of 17 consecutive victories while chasing in ODIs - even back then Yuvi was there till the end in most of the succesful run chases. I do hope this tournament enables him to turn the corner and become a permanent fixture in the Indian test side as well. Once Dravid and Lax are gone we need some experience in the middle order.

Great show by team India and Yuwi particularly!. Congrats. Hope he will bring the Cup for us. I just wonder where is the guy who argued Aus fast bowlers will restrict Indian batsmen with pace and bounce. Thanks to mr. Tait for helping us with xtras. :)

Posted by Deepak on (March 25, 2011, 3:25 GMT)

It was not a thriller until Raina came in, until then, it felt like CALM RIVER FLOWING WITH BOTH SIDES ALMOST GETTING 5 runs an over. THat 14 run over from wayward Tait changed the game. it is Yuvi turning on for India in last 7 he has 4 MOM, incredible. just 2 steps away to lift he cup India, comeon INDIA

Yuvraj dreamt of beating Australia ...........dreams comes in true.....bravoooooo

Dat special person for Yuvi is Sachin. He wants to win the cup for Sachin.

As far as India winning the cup is concerned. I think they should get rid of Munaf and Bring in Nehra or Play 8 batsmen and use Yousuf at 3 as a pinch hitter.

Job well done! Yuvi. We will have fond memories of your performances with the bat & ball in this WC. Please keep up the good work until we lift the Trophy. Spl. thanks to the "person" behind your success. ALL THE VERY BEST.

Very well said. First time india playing like a unit. First time they are handlling presure better then Aussie. Fist time they are looking confident. First time they are playing like a champions. And Second thing it was great decesion to opt for Raina insteadof yusuf. We won the match because of the last stand between Raina and Yuvi. Keep It Up India. Chack de India!

Whatever happened just before the world cup, Yuvi turned into a Man from Boy. ANd what a man he is. Add this determination to his talent, there is no stopping Yuvi.

Superb win for India. One of my favorite team in the tournament. Can't wait until the next match. I just hope one of the Asian team wins the WC.

Executing skills under pressure is what makes the players great. And Yuvraj is not far behind from some of those. Just he made me remember Viv Richards! Sanjiv Gupta, Australia

Yuvi was awesome; he stood between Australia's 4th WC and possibly India's 2nd - in the end held his nerve and came out on top

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 23:10 GMT)

well done !! pajji .. proud of your efforts ..keep it up

Posted by vivek on (March 24, 2011, 22:54 GMT)

verywell done yuvraj. i know how much you were out of form before wc and how you came in. i even thought you wont make an impact. this is totally different yuvraj.

Posted by Dummy4 on (March 24, 2011, 22:50 GMT)

i hope that special person is Sachin.. probably his last WC appearance and probably the only achievement yet eluding from his otherwise illustrious and glorious career!

i hope Yuvraj and INDia do it this time.. carry the baton all along..without hitches.. fr the millions of fans and the millions of hopes they carry in their eyes and fr that one man SAchin..

If ever the world of cricket can bestow upon Sachin what he has given to the game.. they can only come near by giving him the World Cup!!

RESPECT the legend Yuvraj...He is one of his own no comparison with anyone!!!!!!such a great player...im sachin fan but yuvraj made him look no 2!!
