Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka batsman, has said his sublime century in the World Cup final was no consolation following his team's six-wicket defeat. Jayawardene's was the first instance of a batsman scoring a century in a World Cup final in a losing cause.

"I would swap that century any day for a championship medal," Jayawardene told the ICC, adding that India's batting line-up proved too strong to defend 274 against. "We fought well but it wasn't enough. We had to take wickets to control this Indian batting line-up. We got a couple of early wickets but we couldn't get anything going after that. "We didn't have the penetration that we normally do, and they batted very well."

Jayawardene's unbeaten innings of 103 was a flawless one. He struck boundaries and rotated the strike with ease, and was supported by Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera in the batting Powerplay. "When I went in it felt really good, got a couple of loose balls and I struck a few boundaries. That gave me the rhythm and momentum.

"When Kumar got out I knew I had to bat the 50 overs. With the Powerplays you know you can catch up. I'm quite happy with the effort but unfortunately we ended up on the losing side."

About his own future with Sri Lanka, Jayawardene said he was keen to continue playing. "It's important for us to mould the next generation of cricketers in Sri Lanka as well. I'll try and push myself to do that and be better than I am right now. There'll come a day when I'll feel I won't be able to contribute to this team, that's when I'll call it a day."

What a class, what a cricketer ! your Ton in the finals was one of the best I have ever seen. if you take the world cricket only few who makes a match so colourful and interesting. cricketers like Mahela, Sanga, Sachin, Malinga, Chris Gyle, Murali, Ian Morgen,Ricky Ponting to name few.

Fantastic century by Mahel Jayawardane. Making a century in a final is the way to prove "who's the best". It was more of an unlucky day for Sri Lankan team, than the ability of Indian team to chase down that score of 274. As a Lankan Lion, I'm proud of SL Team's consistency when it comes to world cups.

Solid innings from Mahela! Good stuff! You performed on the day we needed you the most but unfortunately the fielding and bowling couldn't back you up. But thats cricket. Sometimes everything goes your way and sometimes it just backfires. Sad that we lost, but immensely enjoyed Mahela's innings, specially at the end with Thisara. Some slaughter that was! Keep the good form up Mahela, we need you.

Thanks for a stylish ton Mahela and proving that artistry hasn't disappeared from batting yet. Looking forward to you and VVS batting together for Cochin..

We should have minimum 14+ or 16+ teams in World Cup not 10. We all know the main 10 teams but we should encourage other nations also. Do it like Soccer World Cup, more nations, more matches, more fun.

We have to rethink our strategies. We must play like sanath did at first 20 overs.powerplay or not it plays decisive role when playing a country like india.Less runs on the top makes it difficult to post a huge total.India has a duo for that but we don't.Dilshan was explosive earlier but he have now realized playing a bit slow is successful. We need someone like shewag, if rightly said another sanath, there was no match for him Still don't.
