Two days after India were crowned World Champions, Sachin Tendulkar has rated MS Dhoni as the best captain he has played under during his 22-year cricket career.

"He [Dhoni] is the best captain I have played under," Tendulkar said in Mumbai. "He is very sharp and always alert. He reads the situation well and is open to sharing ideas. He always has discussions with bowlers, batsmen and senior players separately."

Tendulkar, who has played under six captains, including Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, praised Dhoni's ability to maintain his composure whatever the match situation. "He is always calm and never shows his frustration. These are some of the human qualities which have made him such a good captain. He is a fantastic captain."

India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final in Mumbai after coming through the knockout stages with hard-fought wins over Australia and Pakistan and a patchy performance in the group matches. Tendulkar said that India had "peaked" when it mattered the most. "In the knockout stage we peaked at the right time; it was most important. We knew either the batting was clicking, or bowling, or fielding but everything was not clicking together, but [apart from] in the last three games. Everybody contributed, right from seniors to the juniors in the team. No one can guarantee results but efforts can be [guaranteed]."

After India's victory in the final, Dhoni had said the team had felt the pressure of expectations right through the tournament. Tendulkar said the key to handling that pressure lay in focussing on individual performances. "Pressure and expectation are always there, we were thinking that as individuals we should perform our best. We were not thinking that if a bowler fails, others will take wickets like that; we wanted to do our individual best and perform as a team.

"The responsibility is on all the team members equally. Like me, it was the dream of all the team members to get this World Cup."

Tendulkar said that while lifting the trophy was on the players' minds, the focus was on restricting Sri Lanka to a gettable target and "go through the process and finish the game". He said the pre-World Cup preparatory camp the team had in Bangalore also played a key role in the team's preparation.

Tendulkar paid tribute to the efforts of outgoing coach Gary Kirsten, saying that while he would like Kirsten to continue, he respected his decision to leave, and that the team would "miss" him.

Not just in India, he is the most successful captain in the whole world since he took charge. Be it the Indian team or the IPL team, he produced spetacular results.

i'm a bengali(first an INDIAN) , bt i believe dhoni is way ahead of ganguly, few bias dada suporters may say ganguly brought bhajji, zaheer, sewag etc etc, i cnt agree with them, its players performance in domestic which brought them in d team, selectors and and captains gave them chances, sachin, kumble, srinath, jadeja, sidhu all flourished under azhar, virat, gambhir, raina, munaf, ashwin, yusuf flourished under dhoni, so why dnt u say azhar gave us sachin??????? sehwag, zaheer, bhajji, yuvi all of them were raw talents, no point of taking their credit away frm them , also the time sourav played as captain zimbabwe was regular in test cricket, out of sourav's 21 wins as captain 9-10 of them was against zim and bangladesh, u rock DHONI , we indians proud of u.......

Posted by BABULATA on (April 7, 2011, 7:21 GMT)

Mr. Sachin, Don't forget all credit will go to Mr. Sourav ganguly. He is the 1st man to select the team through out India and destroyed your Mumbai useless domination in Cricket.

Its been a long journey. India have only 4 great captains. 1983, kapil made india to believe that india can also have fast bowlers and India can win the world cup. The journey started. In 90s under azzu India won few great tourney: hero cup (great last over bowling by sachin), twice sharjah cup, 3 times asia cup but lost in 96 semis against great lanka team. Azhar promote sachin as an opener & gave opportunity to sourav-dravid in replace of sidhu-sanjay in england. Azhar never had great team but he tried. It was sourav who changed the whole senario. India started batting very deep: yuvi at 5, kaif at 6 dravid played as kepper at 7. He made an united team and we started calling them team India. India did well at home under azhar but started winning abroad under dada. He changed the mentality of the players. Record says, dhoni is the best indian captain of all time but to me above mentioned 4 are equally important and played major part for Indian cricket development as captain.

Dhoni is the "Imran Khan of India". The way he experimented in the Final and prompted himself to bat up the order is commendable. This reminds me of Imran Khan who batted up the order in World Cup 1992. Finally it is the captain who takes the burden of the team and he did justice to that.

Happy to see Sachin being part of the winning team.

Why did Sachin waited for so long (till Dhoni won WC2011 as captain) to say "Dhoni is best captain he ever played under"? Something is cooking...

Posted by marcs on (April 6, 2011, 10:39 GMT)

My 2 cents, Dhoni is a really smart captain but to be adjudged the best Indian captain ever, is still some distance away. Not many can manage the ego of a team such as India and balance between the seniors (who are worshiped like demi-gods) and juniors and Dhoni has done that successfully so far. But the fact still remains that he took over a well oiled machinery from the likes of Saurav and Kumble and infused a sense of oneness / 'enjoy your game' to bring about this change of fortunes. But his stint has so far been short and most of the laurels (except the 2007 T20 cup) have come in sub-continent pitches (including the majority of test matches that we have played). The final evaluation should be made on a longer run to see if he can get the best out of the team when we play outside too.

i wish sensibility prevails. dada was the best captain... look at our star performers of this world cup. Yuvi, viru, zak aashish,,,,dada oly found all of them. with these guys if he could make it to the finals in south africa, then anyone can make these lads champions at our own backyard. dhoni ight be a good captain but dada is the best. if dhoni makes a team that ll win a world cup sans all the above and sachin hiself too, i accept he is the best captain. sorry sachin u are wrong.

@barani_m1975, bud you are not the only one I feel the same way. Glad to see I'm not alone who think this way. People are just brainwashed by Media. Making id like "truth_or_dare" doesn't mean that you know the truth. It takes a lot of understanding, a true heart, true passion and spirit of a sportsmanship. Rahul Dravid is not only a great player he is also a great and decent human being. This world cup means nothing to me. I am not worried about what billions people are saying… I always follow what my heart tells me not media.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 19:23 GMT)

Sachin has given Dhoni the ultimate certificate and with Saurav also endorsing similar views on Dhoni's leadership skills; this media debate is clearly settled.

Besides winning matches, winning admiration of living legends is a real jewel in Dhoni's crown

Posted by truth_or_dare on (April 5, 2011, 16:39 GMT)

@barani_m1975.. You must be kidding, right... India didnt needed a player who is in " lean Patch"... All the players in the important players were in the peak of their form at the start of the world cup... Yuvi was not at the peak, but he can bowl and field well better than Dravid..... all he needed is a single match and he got that against England.... I didnt regret to say that Dravid IS a good player in Test and WAS a solid player in ODIs... But Man of the Series in World Cup Finals is tooooo muuuuch Comedy..... lol....lol...

@India_on : What is your issue with Tendulkar carryyin it on...He is the best person to take that decision whether he should continue or not..The day he feels he is not giving his 100 % ...he himself will not play..you guys did this to Dravid too...so stop it Mr. whoever you are..

Posted by Samar_Singh on (April 5, 2011, 13:30 GMT)

i think what better time than this for Tendulkar to take retirement ... not worth just playing for more records ... 4 years from now would be a good enough time to groom another youngster ... good luck ..

Posted by WCChamp2011 on (April 5, 2011, 11:57 GMT)

@Partha Gowswami

While its true that Ganguly built the team, it was Dhoni who took it to greater heights. Plus Dada in his last years was very selfish and did not lead from front as evidenced by his decision to not play on a green Nagpur wicket against Australia. I believe that Indian team has won because of the attitude of youngsters. Fittingly, Sehwag and Tendulkar who are one generation senior were out and left the job to young guns. Unlike Dravid, Kumble, Tendulkar, Sehwag and Ganguly, the young guns do not carry the baggage of wilting under pressure.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 11:13 GMT)

sachin is best player ever still india needs his serveces..... no question of retairment he has to groom the team............still we need to develop in bowiling......

Congratulations to all reader for world cup win. Sir i fully disagree with Sachins comments about Dhoni we all know only because of his recommendations MS Dhoni was made captain as he was having differences with Dravid, Ganguly, Sehwad and Azhar too. Our greatest Captain still remains Kapil Dev only. The 1983 win was much bigger that this win as we are a mediocre taem and only because of Kapil we could win but there was equal contribution of others too. This team had good batting lineup in the form of Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvi & Gauti. We are test champion mainly because of Sehwag not because of MS Dhoni,s captainship plus there was equal contribution from South Africa & England in defeating Autralia and dethroning them. Also we have not played Australia & England on their own ground since last two and half year once we defeat them then only we can be real No.1. There is no dought that Ricky Ponting is a graet captain and his approach is to win but prepared to loose and not to draw .

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 10:14 GMT)

@barani_m1975: I think Atul Bhadade, Wasim Jaffer and Sadgoppan Ramesh should have been given a chance. One of them would have definitely got man of the series award.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 9:37 GMT)

Ganguly had build up the team in a bad situation of India. He had the pure luck and confidence of a Captain but in some point he didn't achieve the world cup...because of his performance. But Dhoni get the captaincy when India had a good team but not a 100% winner. Dhoni has also pure luck and confidence of a Captain. But he has his own ability to perform in right time. According to Sachin Tendulkar, who performed as Sri Krishna in Mahabharata with Arjun in two occasions with Ganguly and Dhoni. Sachin helped the Indian to reach the final in two occasions, where Arjun had to perform and as Arjun, Dhoni had performed well and won the battle. That's why Sri Krishna (Sachin Tendulkar) pointed this Arjun (Dhoni) as best!!

Posted by TingALing on (April 5, 2011, 9:26 GMT)

Despite the nearly 10-year age difference between the two, Sachin is a child as compared to Dhoni. He inspires by deeds, but does not command respect on the strength of his personality alone, and there is no way he can hide the emotions that he so clearly feels, be those of joy, or frustration at team mates. But then that is one of the reasons why he is so endearing.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 7:59 GMT)

he remains d best sp-eculative captain ever seen.........:)

Posted by shrony on (April 5, 2011, 7:58 GMT)

In India Sourav Ganguly is the best of all time. Coolness be a positive factor to lead a team. All you may know that Sourav has made the indian team as team India. Probably he is the third best captain in world cricket. Winning is not the thing that you can see. Dhoni has said from 1983 to Sourav & Dravid made the generation go at this stage. Plz Sachin don't say Dhoni is the best captain you played under. A captain is a guardian and he must discuss and teach the members how to achieve the goal. Sourav made the family and now you start earning. Will you forget your dad while you earning?

Posted by AdityaUpadhyay on (April 5, 2011, 7:21 GMT)

Dhoni is the best captain India ever got. His equanimity & poise brings the belief in team at tough times. Only in India they call all his victories as flukes. Otherwise he is highly respected in other cricket playing nation as an astute leader. But now after he won the WC all critics are silenced. Moreover Sachin never had really appreciated somebody so much in the past so he has to be special.

Posted by ChrisLawNZ on (April 5, 2011, 7:13 GMT)

Kapil brought self belief, Ganguly brought steel, Kumble brought determination and Dhoni brought consistancy and cool under pressure. It is only Tendulkar opinion, he is entitled to it like anyone else. We need not question it or even agree. It is perhaps how Dhoni inspires Tendulkar, he seems to be having his batting magic all over gain. As some readers pointed out we need to remember Srinath, Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble, Azar, Kapil, Mohinder, Binny, Chetan Sharma and even Kambli for their overall contibution to India's success today. And the backroom boys and some (?) selectors. To me though Gautum is the Man of the finals, he who turned the match with young Kohli.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 6:53 GMT)

for all those who think dhoni is just lucky because he has alot of matchwinners in his team. look at what he has achieved for chennai super kings. de man is a genius. chennai is not strong as mumbai indians. because of his captaincy they have won. so tendulkar knows what he is talking about, and is not like he doesnt respect the earlier captains. its just what he thinks

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 6:30 GMT)

@gullyguys: If someone says something its their opinion, or their feeling. Here its Sachin's feeling that Dhoni is best. I agree with Sachin Dhoni is the best. All Captains won WC's but lost cool but Dhoni won WC without losing his cool, that's why he's the greatest for Sachin. No way Kapil can be better than Dhoni. Sachin need not do what people ask him, no one does either. Every knows to themselves better what to do and what not to.

Posted by Squte on (April 5, 2011, 5:55 GMT)

Dear Friends, Everybody has his own perception and his own personal views...so does Sachin has. When he says that Dhoni is the best Captain...sure he does not mean that Azhar, Ganguly, Dravid or Kumble weren't good. Ofcourse there has to be ONE best. As for Little Master's retirement..." No Way". He is fit enjoying his cricket and performing...dont be surprised u see him in 2015 WC too. India is blessed to have such gifted player...as Sachin....and the team needs correct balance of youth's exuberance and Masters cricketing experience.

true Sachin Dhoni is great capitain and the best wicket keeper

Posted by Joshua_Krapp on (April 5, 2011, 5:27 GMT)

I think India has a mix of good players, so this feature highlights Dhoni as a good captain. I'm not saying that Dhoni is bad, but he still has a lot to improve on!!!! No matter what anyone says, there will be a lot of changes after this victory for us but i don't think Dhoni will handle it well AFTER the demise of Sachin bhai and Viru!!! Sorry Dhoni, but that's the truth........

Posted by Nitin_0251 on (April 5, 2011, 5:09 GMT)

Why did Tendulkar realize that "Dhoni is best ever captain he played under" after Dhoni won the World cup? Why did Tendulkar could not be match winner in 2003 and 2011 workld cup final since he is the great batsmane? Was winning world cup for nation his dream or making runs for himself?

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 5:09 GMT)

As far as the best captain is considered, that could be a discussion for another day, but Dhoni should be considered no less than a Saurav Ganguly or a Mohammad Azharuddin. People who are mentioning Kapil Dev and Sir Clive Lloyd are completely going out of the topic as here Dhoni is no where compared to these all time greats. Sachin has merely mentioned that he thinks Tendulkar is the best captain he has ever played under and he has almost 22 years of experience and judgement behind that statement. Dhoni has a long way to go but he has always silenced his critics by bringing accolades for India. India have been consistently ranked high in both one day internationals and test matches since his captaincy reign and that cannot be a mere coincidence or pure luck.

Posted by devvaki on (April 5, 2011, 5:07 GMT)

Whoever think Sachin Tendulkar should be thrown out of the ODI will be extremely sorry.

Maybe you should get your facts right. Sachin tendulkar was the highest run scorer in the world cup until the India Sri Lanka final wherein Dilshan beat him.

So unfortunately, your dreams will come crashing down.

Sachin Tendulkar is GOD and none other than the best cricketer ever. You're lucky to have seen him play in your lifetime.

And i do agree when Sachin says Dhoni is the best skipper ever as he did put up a fight in the end and came out to bat rather than hiding during the finals. If it wasn't for his wise decisions we would have had to wait another 5 years to prove a point.

Do not disrespect Sachin Tendulkar, this is something you haven't earned and never will.

Thank you

had some role to play in here. Moreover, often I find people say that Dhoni is lucky to have such a great team and it was all his predecessors that did alll the hard work and he is enjoying the fruit of their hard work. I beg to differ over here. India has never had a dearth of talent but most of these have not been able to make it on the big stage when provided an opportunity due to lack of correct temperament. Saurav may have identified the right people and groomed them but it still required a good leader to guide them and help them overcome their mental barriers. So, I think Dhoni is a greatcaptain as he has not only been calm in all the success he has been a part of (which has been more often that not) but has not shown any/very little nerves when facing defeat. He epitomizes the new India which is silently proud of its progress but does not budge despite any undue criticism.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 4:49 GMT)

Some people sitting in their homes who have never played any cricket (not atleast at the International level) are judging Tendulkar's comments. When Tendulkar said something, he would have put some thought into it. First of all when he said that Dhoni was the best captain he ever played under, there were some specific traits that he pointed out to. He said Dhoni's temperament is exceptional. This is particularly important since Dhoni is not as talented a batsman as a Yuvraj or a Sehwag or a Gambhir but has brought results for the team. It is not always easy to lead a team when you yourself are not in the best of forms. Saurav was a great captain too but he had a different set of traits. He was very passionate. That is an excellent quality. His role was very important in building the squad for the future. But there was still something lacking. This was finishing the game and that required a different kind of a temperament which came during Dhoni's tenure and Dhoni's calm temperament

Posted by   on (April 5, 2011, 3:11 GMT)

Gambhir should have got the Man of the Match...he was the one who handled the pressure well right from the start and pushed INDIA closer to the target... Sachin should continue playing ODI(unlike some people said)..he is the right person to decide when he wants to leave...If he thinks he is not playing well he ll definitely make the decision himself to retire... He deserves to play for records after serving the country for 21 years....

Posted by Milind_Jadhav on (April 5, 2011, 1:25 GMT)

All SRT said was that Dhoni was the best captain he played under...perhaps the people disagreeing and posting silly comments seem to know more about what goes on in the team than SRT. There are some misguided souls asking for SRT to retire! Do not worry, he will when he thinks its time and not when you bunch of losers "ORDER HIM TO RETIRE" The way he is batting at this stage there is no call for him to do that. So people RIP until he takes a call...

@India_On obviously you know nothing about cricket and just posting inflammatory comments about Sachin to grab attention. His 18 off 14 balls was as graceful and sublime as opposed to the ugly hoikes and swats by others who followed him. He was looking good for a century but got out to a delivery which moved off the seam. @barani_m1975 Comparing Sachin with Dravid is like comparing apples with oranges. Dravid is a spent force who has lost form, fitness and self belief to play the game at this level. I seriously think he should call it quits as it is painful to watch him labour for his runs while other batsmen score freely at other end. Dravid has served India well in the past but his time is up and he should let Kohli find his feet in the Test side.

As i said always sachin rode yuvi , dhoni coattails and occasional help from sehwag. Dhoni is lucky captain. he made many mistake. But he got the result. I rather have lucky captain than brilliant one. HAHA.

Dhoni has godly knack of timing. This guy struggling in every game to score runs. When he saw he can play murali and pitch is easy to bat , he jump infront of yuvi and stole the thunder from yuvi.

Dhoni is great for India. I am not sure he is great captain but superemely lucky.

we must not forget the contibutions of our young gum"virat kohli" in such a deep batting line up..he was the only one who had the least batting experience in such a tense situation (31-2) n that too after sachin..sehwag..."atleast i beleived then 30% battle have been lost"...gautam gambhir-fabulous..but above all TOO FAST TOO FURIOUS:MSD.........

In my opinion sreesanth should realise that showing in approapiate attitude, unwanted agressiveness is not the solution of deviating the batsmen of quality like dilshan,...sangakara..ponting.. watson... jayawardene...

at last..from the bottom of my heart:JIYO KHILADI WAHE WAHE.................

In all these comments, only 2 comments so far have praised Gautam Gambhir for his crucial innings. This is what these idol worshippers in India do to deserving cricketers efforts.

There's a lot of emotion involved in everything our players say now. So cut Tendulkar some slack. Dhoni helped him get the one thing didn't have - and despite all those great stats, no player feels complete without winning the cup. Which means, just because Sachin says Dhoni is the best skipper he's had doesn't mean that he's saying the other he's played with didn't contribute to his success. He's been a gentleman through and through, and reserves the right to pick his favorite. Kohli said it best - Tendulkar has carried the burden of nation for 21 years; It was time we carried him.

I am the only Indian is not Happy about Winning the world cup. Because, one of the greatest cricketter Rahul Dravid should have been there in the world cup team. Dravid and Sachin are being in the same generation, without Dravid's presents team member were celebrated the historic win. This is absolutly unfair. The selectors would have given a chance to Dravid to play in world cup. Don't understand why they left Dravid. Dravid contributed a lot to Indian Test cricket than Sachin. I just wanted to ask one question to Selectors...Does all the player has striket rate more than 100% or are they scoring in all the matches? You can't see a player like Dravid in terms of consistency. Every player has a lean patch. If a chance would have given to Dravid, definetly he would have got Man of the series in world cup.

Sourav of all is the best still. Sachin need not kiss up to Dhoni. Dhoni is a great captain but how come loosing cool on the ground is not being the best. Clive Llyod won 3 WC he lost cool. Steve Waugh won WCs he lost cool.Ricky ponting won WCs he lost cool...and mind you they are definitely greta and consistent as palyers than Dhoni and greater captains than Dhoni...

Sachin like Afridi after the world cup is going out of his domain to say stuff as no he probably is feeling he has nothing else to achieve. Mind you even Kapil Dev is better than Dhoni still. That man sailed the Indian team against Zim by scoring that 175 and again defending just 183 in the final against the mighty WI...

Let GOD just not speak anything or else people will start asking about his retirement plans soon and that would not sound nice.....

Posted by East_West on (April 4, 2011, 20:22 GMT)

in Sachin's opinion - MS DHONI is the best! I think it is 100% true whereas someone who is saying Sourav!! well, Sourav might have took the team from bottom BUT dada also started enjyoing his capatincy and misused that position MANY TIMES than any other captain in the world--well, exception is Azhar! who really ruined the reputation of INDIA with his greed! the reality of NO TAKERS in IPL for Sourav is the CLEAR EXAMPLE of what Sourav was/is known for!! MSD got us here - with a team of individuals - united them and brought us the glory! ONLY misake he has done is that he criticized Sreesanth infront of the media rather than giving his 2 cents to Sreesanth...having said that..MSD might have realized that Sree can change his immature behavior only when he is criticized infront of the world!! anyways, for Sachin MSD is the best! no arguments there! Bharat Maata ki Jai!

ganguly was good..dhoni is GREAT!! asian teams never lacked talent..its the leadership that turns around things..look@pakistan in 1992 w/o saeed anwar/waqar younis still managed2win coz of IMRAN KHAN..same thing here under DHONI..never panics and brain works non-stop in the right direction..india beat pakistan coz of dhoni's perfect rotation of bowlers while afridi, though a decent captain, lacked strategy in the chase...thumps up2dhoni in the final also, where he came@no.4 and played a captains knock..love u DHONI..peace from Pakistan!!

Posted by venkat0224 on (April 4, 2011, 20:00 GMT)

sachin always respect the best knock by any one but dhoni doesn't praise even when sachin plays a crucial role and when we lost dhoni always say only one thing "it would be better if we score 20 to 30 more runs" i heard these words lot of times nice escapist dhoni as a captain perfect but as a batsmen he is no where and worst way of playing i mean he have no style and nothing very irritating to watch his batting. dhoni should change this attitude other wise he will face lot of problems

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:49 GMT)

@Mani Subramanian: as if Tendulkar needs to suck up any one to stay in Indian team. He is man one can build a team around. Why are you so sad and angry with your life that you cant stand a man who is doing good in his life and doing a job as a batsman better than any one else in the world? he has not taken anything away from you, so why are you so frustrated?? He is doing his own work. it would be better if you could take some inspiration from him and concentrate on your own life and excel in that. Tired of seeing people like you around.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:48 GMT)

sachin shd tell this words before the world cup...or he accessed his (MS) by grabbing the cup.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:41 GMT)

Fantastic efforts displayed by each individual. The Capt. M.S.Dhoni kept real COOL till he blasted the SIX the winning stroke.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:38 GMT)

This is absolutely right that MS Dhoni is the best captain that the world cricket has ever seen. The god o cricket realize that truth on the world cup 2011 win eve. His(Dhoni) calmness and focusing quality can be very clearly observed through all format of games. Whenever you say its T20 i, ODI, Test or IPL, its fantastic to see MSD in action.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:29 GMT)

Ganguly is still a better captain than MSD....I dont agree with sachin

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:22 GMT)

The very first time I hear the GOD speaking his favorites.... Congratulations Dhoni... this is a better and exclusive reward to you than the cup itself!!! Congrats team India once again!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 19:18 GMT)

Exactly, I am agree with master blaster statement.MS DHONI have all qualities whatever a captain needlike cool, calm, sharing views with members and most important that some crucial decesion taken by him always got in favour of team

Awesome! As a side note, Afridi has let us Indian fans down hugely by making very irresponsible statements in Pakistan press. Thanks to him, sincere compliments made by any cricket fans from Pakistan congratulating Indians would always be taken with a handful of salt. Shame on you Afridi for unnecessarily bringing religion into cricket.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 18:01 GMT)

The Best thing liked by Sachin in Dhoni is probably the way he approachs the seniors for help and treat juniors with ease and respect. Thats most essential for the unity of team as we all know its being human to have a little bit of "ego" if not high just to given importance at one time or the other. Although Sachin have already earned so mych respect, he must have watched Dhoni for his tratment towards the team. Earlier captians like Kapil, Azhar, Saurav, Khumble, Dravid were all great players and leaders and among them Dhoni have unique place because of the rare mixture of Calmness and Agression both equally important to win matches and also he is the only caption to lift two world cup trophies.

no 1 captain in world.. very well played, without his effort winning cup was im possible

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 17:48 GMT)

that's the biggest compliment MSD will ever get

Posted by AMLL on (April 4, 2011, 17:40 GMT)

As well said by Tendulkar, Dhoni is the best of all better captains he played with. Dhone is best not only because of this world cup win but from the time he took over the captaincy (after unfortunate 2007 world cup exit although Dravid deserved more success in that tournament),winning Twenty20 woldcup, IPL 2010, Twenty20 champions league, led test team to attain ranking # 1 status and all were different team composition but one man called Dhoni made the difference.

His dynamics (attacking attitude with cool temperament coupled with timely defensiveness) of captaincy is simply fantastic & remarkable.

Like his childhood idols (Sachin & Gilchrist), he is very instrumental & effective and outside field so far, he can be considered as "Well spoken gentleman" and one who recollected the efforts and role of quartet.

All the best MS and team India. We would like to see you lifting many more trophies and worldcups !!!!

I wonder where all the guys knocking Dhoni have gone. Coming from Tendulkar this is high praise considering the calibre of the other individuals he has played under. It took a special captain and a special team to bring the world cup home

Posted by dreamvins on (April 4, 2011, 17:31 GMT)

MS has the qualities of a world class leader. His cool temperament has brought out the best of each player. And Sachin recognizes it. Proud to have a captain like him.

Posted by bigwonder on (April 4, 2011, 16:43 GMT)

Congratulations India!!!!! This was a terrific and famous win. Both teams had one loss and one tie/NR before final. Both have wicketkeeper/batsman as their captain. Both teams were #2 at the end of their group stage. The only difference, India beat previous World cup champions to reach final and Srilanka beat teams who have never won the world-cup. Despite of this win, Team India will be (as always) humble and polite unlike other team that we know of. Chak de India.

I like Tendulkar, no doubt he is an excellent player and batsman. I however don't appreciate the statement that Dhoni is the "best captain he's played under." That to me seem unappreciative of Ganguly and Dravid who were to me also good captains who did their best on the field for India.

Posted by vinjoy on (April 4, 2011, 15:14 GMT)

I do not generallly agree when players/experts rate another player/captain as the best. No doubt Dhoni is an excelelnt captain and has won India World Cup, Sachin should not forget the great moments that other captains have given Indian cricket. Ganguly (test wins in Aus, Win, Eng), Dravid (Test series wins in Eng, WI), kumble (Perth win) and and even Azhar (Hero Cup, Asia cup). If SRT calls Dhoni as best captain because he has won India WC, does it mean that Fleming (NZ) or Taylor (Aus) were not very god captains. All captains try their best with whatever resources they have. SRT should be thankful to all his captains he played under including himself (when he won Titan Cup in 1996 agianst SA, test at Aus in Delhi).

That's the spirit we were missing in the team a few years ago or previous world cup. Greg Chappell's policies of divide-and-rule had created so much difference in team that each player was going in different direction with his own agenda. With the help of calm MSD at the helm supported by Gary Kirstein, along with rest of the team and staff, we have been able to achieve the right outcome.

MS Dhoni is a really good and thinking captain. If a player of the stature of Sachin Tendulkar endorses the quality of Dhoni's captaincy then it means that he has been very successful in getting the best out of all the players during crucial pressure situations.I hope team India and MS dhoni all the very best for the future series as well.

Posted by abiindia on (April 4, 2011, 14:39 GMT)

After winning a T20 world cup 4 years before, Rameez raja disrespected Dhoni after losing the asia cup, he has added that this dhoni is running a bunch luck winning T20, but for another 6 month or so or one year his fame will come down , everybody will started to read him and give him a failure face, that would be a ndian downside of cricket. now it is almost 4 years since we have achived another feat for this captaincy, and cup of dream, which has come true, and his skills grown up inspite of all loaded work he is driving for the cricket..its absolutely fantastic. But i still felt very upset to Rameez Raja's announcement in front of TV media commandary box.... let him think of his team. its dirty mouth should clean up by acid now.

Sreesanth did not bowl the 10 overs and preferring him to Aswin was ridiculous however India won and all credit to the Captain but every member did his part.Well done!

Posted by arun_cheers on (April 4, 2011, 13:39 GMT)

In 2003 WC, it was more of a one man show or mostly the team depended on huge performance from one or two members in the team for every match. And there were lot of week links in the batting line up then and also the bowling. India's batting that time just depended on the trio of Sehwag, Sachin and Saurav to win tough matches. And it finally showed up in the finals. But this time, it was a team effort that ensured that we did not lose the crucial and crunch games. The would-have-been week links like Ravindra Jadeja were dropped from the squad. And the performances from Sehwag, Gautam, Kohli, Raina with the bat, Zak, Ashwin and Bajji with the ball and the all-round performance from Yuvraj and Dhoni's WKeeping and captaincy sealed the deal in India's favour !!! So it was a total team effort and team spirit without even a pinch of selfishness that helped the cause.

Posted by addiemanav on (April 4, 2011, 13:36 GMT)

i totally agree with sachin!!dhoni has shown the calmness and intelligence that is needed by a captain!!he has proved that u can win a tnmnt with 3-4 bowlers and smart decisions!!the indian batting was the best and the results were a proof of that!!dhoni wasnt so concerned about the batting coz it clicked every time, but dhoni had to make sure that the bowlers wer able to restrict oppositions to scores that batters cud chase!!ind gave 300+ totals twice, against sa & eng..eng game was a tie,but in sa game, had ind used last 10 overs better they cud hav been 340+ and won easily!!but after that, from wi game to sl game, the lowest total was 180,highest was 275!!these totals wer managed quite well by indian batting!!the only total that cud hav pressurised ind was 325+,but ind didnt let any team go past that!!dhoni knew the resources wer limited, but made sure he used them efficiently!ind wer definitely not as gud as wi,or aus..but they had the capt who was smart enough to understand that!!

Posted by cricmatters on (April 4, 2011, 13:24 GMT)

Kapil Dev and Kumble alnog with Dhoni were excellent leaders of men who thrived under pressure and never gave in. As the old saying goes, When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Dhoni was partly blessed to have so many potential match winners in his side but having talent is one thing and turning it into match winning performances is another. I think Yuvi played a very responsible and important role especially with the bowl in the middle overs. Ground fielding improved as the tournament progressed and catching was good overall. Hopefully India would soon find another wicket taking seamer to complement Zaheer Khan and a good leg spinner to pair with Bhajji so they can become a complete team.

Yes Dhoni is best,No doubt. I request Dhoni to strart thinking to retain the trophi in 2015. Because the services of Sehwag, yuvraj, Jaheer, Nehra,Harbhjan may not be available due to Fitness problems mostly. I prey for Sachin to continue up to 2015 WC. BCCI should start talent hunt seriouly to find good fast bowlers and Fast bowling all rounders. BCCI should send junior teams to Australia and NZ to gain good experiance . The next WC is in Australia and NZ.

Dhony is cool under pressure and he never shows his frustration when things go wrong. Sangakkara could learn from Dhony how stay cool under pressure. He shouts at playes in Sinhalese language when the players don't do well. That's why Mahela is better captain than Sanga at the moment. I hope Sanga will improve with the experience and win the world cup in 2015. I am a strong Sri Lankan supporter but was dissapointed when the panel ignored Dhony from the worldcup 11.

All news headings say India's BCCI team won the World Cup Cricket. But Bupati and Paes won the Ericsson trophy and are the World Number ONE in Tennis doubles. No news headlines. So much hype for Cricket. Why? Viswanth Anand was called a foreigner after owning all his contribution. Very sad! Only Cricket like the Congress and Ghandi family for India!

I dont Agree with Sachin this time around...Sourav Ganguly was way better than Dhoni as far as captaincy is concerned..Dhoni has never faced 2003's strong Australian side in the final...

INDIA has always been blessed with world class players. But it always failed to deliver because of lack of belief and mutual trust among the players. Kudos to Dhoni who changed the whole system.

Whoa this is huge! Dhoni was a man, a mere mortal. Now he's become a saint. Only a saint can nominate a saint. And the scary thing is I do not disagree! Except I believe Dhoni needed Dada to do his thing. Dhoni has great qualities but let's not forget the contribution of Dada in terms of changing the attitude of the Indian cricket team. Dada inherited a team lacking self esteem, not able to win test matches away from home, and being bounced out on hard pitches. Under Dada, they slowly but surely lost all those inhibitions and started to become a world force. And luckily for India, Gangs was let go at just about the perfect time, when Dhoni was mature enough to take over, and the team was mature enough to do well consistently. Thanks to Dada and Dhoni, the 2Ds, India has become the force they are today. Let's also not forget Azharuddin also, whose clever scheme at home tests ensured India became an unbeatable force at home. Cover your base before launching your attack outside. Go India!

I think the comments he received on his captaincy from the little master is the biggest accolade for him!!!

Posted by LaxisGreat on (April 4, 2011, 12:35 GMT)

Ah, this may break the heart of a million dada fans ... but when you talk of on field captaincy and tactics, and finally keeping himself aloof from the criticism of the fans, he is definitely the very best.

come on sachin, dont be carried away by this win...calling him as the Best Captain You have played under.. is perhaps bit emotional statement from you...Like many people, it seems u also go by the result. Great captains should not be judged only by the result, there is much more beyond the result; often we saw Sachin plays underhand or downplays (trying to bury??) the contributions of his counterparts like Ganguly, Dravid and Kumble; he is comfortable in praising lavishly the juniors like yuvi, bajji, dhoni; it is evident when he uses limited words to praise/tribute Ganguly and Kumble when they hav retired; it seems he does it deliberatly....ur tributes to the fellow players are not consistent, its biased; sorry GOD...its tough to acknowledge this.

Sachin's quote proves that leadership is bigger, essential and possibly, rarer than world class talent.

Posted by faisalmdvm on (April 4, 2011, 12:25 GMT)

Its been a long journey.I would like to believe that it all started with Yuvi and Kaif in that famous Natwest victory against ENG, where they proved that we have in us to take the team home from any situation despite losing Sachin early. People ceased to leave the ground or switch off the TV even after Sachin departed. We were no longer depended on him. And there he was a new Tendulkar releived off all pressures under a new leader, playing like a seveteen year old, the man is enjoying it better than he ever had. This is new India. We may lack express bowlers but we are behind none.

22 years of international cricket, 14000 test runs (including 51 tons), 18000 ODI runs (including 48 tons) and now a World Cup triumph in front of home crowd!!!. What else would you need to achieve? Sachin has done all these and it is right time for him to hang up his boots. He has achieved things which is unlikely to be bettered in the near future. And now if he continues to play, he may achieve many many glories, but he is occupying a stage which some promising youngsters can utilise to deliver. This World Cup saw two Sachin hundreds but India was not able to win both these matches. The Indian victory was a collective team effort and the lion's share was given by Yuvraj. Kohli, Raina, Gambhir all did their job well. Dhoni clicked at the right time. The bowlers, though were lacking confidence but for Zaheer Khan. Fielding superb. Overall collective team effort. Let the youngsters blossom.

Hi guys read this...... How the master blaster tells abt the dhoni as a captain.....

Posted by cse_sahil on (April 4, 2011, 12:08 GMT)

i am no one to contradict sachin's statement but as a cricket fan i feel dada was better captain than dhoni.......dhoni is fantastic but dada was league apart....

Posted by abhi_cricinfo on (April 4, 2011, 12:06 GMT)

Dhoni is lucky to have Sachin in his team. Under captaincy of Dhoni , Sachin has scored 4986 international runs at an awesome average of 59.35 (93 innings). It includes 18 centuries and 19 half centuries.Sachin don't give comments on his team mates every now and then. If Sachin say Dhoni the best captain India have got then I would agree with that as well.

hi guys.... Read this then u know...... Master blaster tell abt the dhoni as a captain........

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 12:00 GMT)

oh probably I read it too fast...my bad..he has said it indeed.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:57 GMT)

And who would doubt it !!! Handed the captaincy for the inaugural T20 WC in 2007...WON it. Then made captain of ODI's and won the ODI series down under is AUS in 2008 (one of the greatest achievements as it's very difficult to beat Aus in Aus) and Now this Biggest one of all ... World Champions 2011. And another greatest thing, reigning number 1 TEST TEAM starting DEC 2009 .... is there anything left ????? MSD, you are simply Superb !!!! Whhhooooo....

Again Tendulkar giving the credit where it's due. Haven't heard anything like this from Dhoni for Tendulkar.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:55 GMT)

After reading the piece..I didn't notice anywhere Sachin saying that Dhoni was the best captain he played under.....

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:51 GMT)

LONG LIVES THE LEGEND OF THE MODERN ERA CRICKET ....... CONGRATULATIONS TO CAPTAIN COOL MS DHONI AND HIS TEAM OF CHAMPIONS .......WE WILL CHERISH THESE MOMENT FOR EVER IN OUR LIVES...THANK YOU TEAM INDIA..(:

Posted by indianzen on (April 4, 2011, 11:47 GMT)

Vasisht saying brahmarishi? applauds to Dhoni...

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:47 GMT)

Wish sachin plays for another 4-5 years and be a part of 2015 as well. By the time players like Raina, virat, ashwin and few young blood from IPL can also join the team and strengthen the line up. Creating HISTORY is all what we need. never allow the aussies to come closer to this trophy anymore. JAI HO.........

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:46 GMT)

Sachin is a "Thaali ka baigan" , he said similarly of Mohd Azharuddin many years back. He is politically correct , changes with situation !

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:44 GMT)

When India won the t-20 world cup, it was said a fluke for Dhoni. When India became No.1 Test side, it was said Dhoni was lucky and now when India won World Cup, still people are saying that Dhoni is just lucky. However, Sachin, the Master himself drew curtains to all the speculations and admitted that Dhoni was the best captain. Well done Dhoni!! Bravo Sachin!! It is going to be a much debated statement for sure.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:43 GMT)

I am so glad, like millions of other Indians, that Sachin got to lift this world cup. All his records, averages, awards would have meant little to the Little Master, if it wasnt for this trophy. Well done India.

MAD respect for Gary Kirsten. A South African who I'm sure by us Indian is considered one of our own. Excellent win on Saturday. The joy on the faces of Indians (the team and the fans) is amazing to see.

Posted by akhilhp on (April 4, 2011, 11:42 GMT)

I think 2011 and 2003 teams had best combination too...

Posted by   on (April 4, 2011, 11:40 GMT)

SACHIN-DHONI combo.............the best thing happened to Indian TEam!!!!

Posted by JosephRoshanthaKingstonFernando on (April 4, 2011, 11:36 GMT)

Yes, he is a very good captain!

Cool man - well-done Dhoni!

After Mohomad Azharudin, he is the one I like as Indian captains!

If Sachin is GOD and GOD says SOMETHING then it is UNDISPUTABLE......
