Sri Lanka provisional squad

  • Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Tharanga Paranavitana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal, Thilan Samaraweera, Prasanna Jayawardene, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Farveez Maharoof, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chanaka Welegedera, Suranga Lakmal, Dhammika Prasad, Shaminda Eranga, Dilhara Fernando, Nuwan Pradeep, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Sachitra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Dilruwan Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Kaushal Lokuarachchi

Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis and fast bowler Dilhara Fernando have been named in the 30-man provisional squad for the upcoming tours by Pakistan and India. The squad has no new faces.

Mendis and Fernando last played for Sri Lanka during the tour of South Africa last year. Mendis, who suffered a back injury, hasn't played a competitive match since January. Nuwan Pradeep, the fast bowler, is also returning from injury. Pradeep suffered a hamstring tear in the tour match against the South African Invitation XI in Benoni and had to return home. He has since played just one first-class match for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, picking up four wickets.

Another notable inclusion is the legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi, who last played for Sri Lanka in 2007.

Pakistan arrive at the end of this month for a series of two T20Is, five ODIs and three Tests in June-July. India are expected to play a shorter series, comprising five ODIs and one T20, starting July 22.

I do not understand logic behind including Mendis in the squad. This is well known fact that Pakistani batsmen play Mendis very well. Pakistan was the first team that had unlocked Mendis's mystery. Even when Mendis had mesmarized Indian batsmen, Pakistanis played him comfortably. Mendis does not turn the bowl and bowls flat. This is a bread and butter stuff for Pakistanis. This is not a well informed decision by SL selectors...SL should save Mendis to play against India as they are still hopeless against him..especially likes of YouvRaj Singh and Suresh Raina..

youngsters can't perform well in International level.so pls consider experienced players.all youngsters failed to perform in practice matches.but our pace bowling attack is not match with International level.only malinga is up to the standerd.selectors pls search from villages.you cant find only from colombo.

Why CU Jayasinghe who hit 40 sixes with strike rate 115 and batting avarege 57,, scored 740 runs not in the squad and nobody from best five bowlers in Premier League Tournament Tier A too. its a shame, selection committee favour dilhara, kapu selecting for ??????. they must think Bhanuka, Kusal janith, Anjelo perera like young talents too.

Angelow Perera is good option. good all round young cricketer & useful hitter down the order. Its good to give him a experience before the t20 wc. may be he is giving a opportunity to act a senior role in SL A which is touring to SA. But im hardly believing he should be in t20 wc Squad!

@am5786...V know how chinthaka played in inter provintiol tounemnets and ODI tounement.plz check status of domestic league stats...he is far better player than C.Kapugedara...A.Perera is the highest scorer in this season..Sri Lanka gna do same mistake if they think 2 play t-20 with Silva,Tharanga n kapudedara n ODI too

The problem as I see it (being not from SL), is that SLs pace options (without Malinga), are threadbare at best. I really like Eranga, but other than him, there are no other Test quality PACE bowlers atm. SLs domestic comp is dominated by spinners, there is only one PACE bowler in the top 10 wicket takers in either division! IMO, pace is essential to success outside SL, (shame about Malinga), but given there is a young 23yo in Premaratne (a leftie) who has a career S/R in the low 40s, I think he is a must to get in the squad. Until SL get some decent frontline seamers, they will struggle away from home. SL only need to find TWO pacers, with Matthews being a solid 3rd pace option, with two spinners, SL would have a well balanced attack, the spinners are okay. I think SL need to beef up their pitches!

Ajantha Mendis has barely played since last year's World Cup. He injured his back in the first game after it (probably from over-worked preparation) and it hadn't recovered. Hopefully he has recovered - if he has watch out!

Sri Lanka playing India and Pakistan again? Same repeated series keeps getting boring because not even 1 year the last time Sri Lanka toured UAE to face Pakistan in a full scheduled series, a series which they lost miserably and at the beginning of 2012, Sri Lanka played India in the CB Series. I'd rather see an Ireland v Sri Lanka/Pakistan series than that. No wonder Cricket is not liked and played by most countries.
